The Château de Suscinio or de Susinio was built to be the residence of the Dukes of Brittany.map coordinates 47.512778, -2.729444Designed to be a place of leisure, between the seaside and a forest full of game for hunting, the castle's first logis seigneurial (seigniorial house) dates from the beginning of the 13th century. The castle was enlarged and more heavily fortified in the 14th century.

In satellite photos you can see how the river was re-routed to make 18th and 19th century fortifications around the inner city.

On 11 November 1050 is Henry IV was born in the Palatinate district in the castle. Goslar is one of the castles also known as Konigspfalz or Kaiserpfalz because they were secondary seats of the Holy Roman Emperor.The current complex consists of several buildings.

The erstwhile owners in 1322- presumably also the builders - were the Counts of Werdenberg-Sargans. Parts of the castle have been dated to about 1280 by investigations of the buildings.

It is believed that one Castrum of Lusitanos Celts that was here was later Romanized . With the Muslim invasion of the Iberian Peninsula, these conquerors also erected a fort on parts of the site.

Much rebuilding has left very little of the early construction, including most of the moats.

What appears to be a castle tower is actually a water tank made from the castle ruins in the Twentieth Century. A few bits and pieces of the original castle still exist around that.

In the eighteenth century, the Butler family incorporated it into a large mansion. Its somehow poetic that the only portion still standing is a part of the round tower. The property is privately owned and the restored gate lodge is the only portion accesible to the public.

01/06/2014 at 11:17 AM #12719Helfstyn is a castle 15 km east of P?erov, in Central Moravia, Czech Republic.map coordinates 49.518611, 17.628889The castle was probably established at the end of the 13th century by the marauding knight Fridus (or Helfrid) of Linava who used the castle as a base for robbing merchants during the unsettled times that followed the murder of Wenceslas III in 1306. (You know considering his name is in a Christmas Carol, I can't believe that word doesn't recognize it)

What you see today is mostly an 18th century building on the 14th century foundations.

The earliest mention of the fortress from the year 1429, when the architect - master Niklos presented to Prince Janusz the construction accounts for the work on the construction of the fortress.
