We went to Hever Castle about 27 years ago, when our oldest son was 6 months old.  At the time, you could take an inside tour.  You actually got to walk through the bedrooms that the family who lived there still used.  There were pictures of the kids on the walls and letters and personal correspondence on the dressers, right next to a 400 year old canopied bed!

The private church was very beautiful, with medieval brasses on the floor, and stained glass windows.  It is a very tiny castle though. Some of the homes being built today are probably just as large or larger than Hever.

So, which of us prefer which type?  The fortresses, the keeps, the donjons (French, ie dungeon), the chateaux, the huge sprawling types, or the ruins?

Chambord is huge and sprawling, while I find it fascinating, I prefer Chenonceaux.   The ruins break my heart...(such as Amboise)

Wiston
Wiston must rank as one of the best-preserved motte and bailey castles in Wales.

I wish all the castles had been preserved, but there is something intriguing about an ancient ruin.
