So, my son has reached an age that we would like to buy him a mug of his own to add to his garb (plus it reduces the things I have to carry ::)).  I have a leather mug with plastic insert that I love& have owned for many years, and is used year round at home, that he steals on a regular basis.  I would love to buy him one of his own this year, but last year when we looked around, couldn't find them anywhere!  We found one place that had leather mugs with wax seals inside but I would really prefer a plastic insert.  Does anyone know where I can find them??

I found this:

Most of the other sites I found didn't want you to put the liner in as they said that it wasn't good for the leather.

I myself, have had a wooden mug for the last mumblemumble years and haven't gone in search of anything else in a LONG while.

Thank you Lady J!  I will look into those.  With him being 13, I can see wood mugs being dropped and broken.  I don't want to spend that much money for that to happen!! The only leather mugs we found at faire were wax lined and well over $100, more than I want to spend! :o

the other thing you could do is buy him a mug out at faire but buy the liner that's in the first link.

The WW mugs are certainly candidates for cracks when dropped, however, the Knarly Knot mugs are near indestructible. Ours have been dropped, kicked, flung, smashed, and still in one piece.

Another alternative are the bored out tree branch mugs sold by the blacksmith.

KP, I'm sure you can understand the need for something to withstand the damage!  I don't think your little one in too far behind behind mine.   :o
We will have to check out Knarly Knot this year, haven't stopped by there in a while.  I did not know the blacksmith had mugs....interesting!!

Trill, not sure if you've made it out to Sherwood or not, but Ravensmith, the blacksmith down by the arena sells the mugs which are bored out of different types of trees. I have one and I love it. They are resellers for the mugs, however they make the handles, so once you pick your mug you can then pick out a handle, or ask them to custom make a handle for you. Each mug is numbered and comes with a certificate if I remember correctly.

Ravensmith is now the official blacksmith at TRF.

From what I remember seeing on FB the original owners of Knarly sold the business so I don't know if they'll be there this year.  Last year there was a vendor that I've seen out at the highland games in Houston that is comparable to Knarly but a bit cheaper than them...and I like their mugs a bit more.  http://www.castlescooper.com/  Don't know if they'll be back this year but they are up near Dallas.

Edit: Found their Etsy site: https://www.etsy.com/shop/castlescooper

No more Knarly? That's sad.
BUT - That means our mugs are collectors items now

Those look exactly like the mugs being sold by Ravensmith. However, I had not seen the mugs with the art carved into them. So, not sure if it is the same company or someone doing something similar.

I remember that guy, Jess!  Nice man that did FANTASTIC work...especially with some of the rarer woods.
