Savannah and the thousands out there like her...

On our recent trip through the south, on our final night in Savannah, GA, we had the experience of meeting a street person and a dog that he was caring for, that I've named "Savannah," in my mind.

We were walking through one of the squares in the downtown area and spent a moment or two talking with a young traveler and this dog.  He let us know that he would be happy to let us take her, but I deftly turned aside his oblique request to take her off of his hands.  We were traveling, too, and I don't know if my idiosyncratic dog, Beau, would accept her or not, were I to bring her home.  Better to bring a new one in with an out available if he doesn't accept a new pack mate.

She was nondescript, but the look in her eyes haunts me still.  I've named her "Savannah" in my mind and know that there are many out there in exactly her situation.  I know that homeless people take good care of their pets, they are a potential source of income and solace to many of them, but I can't help but see her in my mind's eye whenever a storm rolls through here, or there.

So send a good wish for all of the Savannah's out there that they may be safe and well cared for.  I wish I could be there for all of them, but perhaps this request for prayers can help the ones that I can't at this point in time.

Mi Lady Nicolette,  you have a soft soul like myself.  We've taken in 2 stray cats within the last 6 months, even though we couldn't afford it.  They seem to know which house to come to for food, medical attention, or just a good nights sleep.  I'd love to take all of them in, but it's just not possible.  In today's economy were seeing more and more strays in our area, and it's so sad, cause most of them once had a family and a home.  I'll light several candles for Savannah, and others like her, we pray that they all find homes.
Peace and blessings

I'm the  same  way.  Both of  my horses  were rescued  from horse  auctions  and  they have made  wonderful horses.  I have  3  cats  that were  adopted  from animal shelters.  My two older dogs  I adopted  from animal rescue groups, and  if i did not have  enough pets I  went and  adopted a puppy last year  from  the  shelter.
If i ever win the  lottery I  would buy lots of propery and  adopt a  whole  bunch of  dogs  and horses  and have  staff to take  care of  them.

My best dog, Rex, was found on the street by my kids.
I miss him terribly.

I am glad that the young man had Savannah with him. How easy it would have been to dump her off at a shelter.
I give him credit for that.

And while we are at it...damn economy.
It has wrecked so many lives lately. >:(

All of our pets have been rescued or strays.  Our hearts break for them, but it's not possible to take them all in.  I will be in charge of a Cursillo weekend (church) and it is typical for the team to give the leader a gift.  I made it known that  if there is a gift for me, I'd like a donation to the rescue society where we get most of our dogs from.

That is one way to help all animals.  If anyone has a lot of "stuff," maybe the next occasion for gift giving, a donation in your name can be made to a society that helps animals.

Many thanks to one and all here for responding, I'm sure that your wishes are doing some good out there in the big, wide world.
