Hey- Arent You?

#120
on the subject of editing.......

IMHO, Edit software is useful & valuable for a number of reasons.   first and foremost is to add your copyright mark.  secondly, I really like the effect of blurring the backround, it makes your subject pop, draws attention to it, etc.  additionally because sometimes your background is owned by someone else, like the faire, who would be within their legal rights to deny rights to a photographer to publish photos of something that they have copyright over.  I have actually heard of that happening at other faires. and thirdly, I have seen many photos where I thought, "man, that would be a perfect shot, if not for that trashcan in the background, or that bag of nuts in that guys hand, or the stupid mundane with a pepsi cup walking through."  I think that it requires alot of timing and patience to get a shot with not only the subject, but the background and foreground right, and I'm sure many shots have been missed by a photog waiting for some dumbarse to get out of the background... and the subject moved.

Yes i agree for some photos editing can do wonders when you are taking pics at a renfest and try and get the pepsi cup or stuff out of the pic. Or maybe where the reflextion of the person taking the photo needs to be removed. I do need to chat with delany and Radu about putting a copyright in my photos cause right now my only option is to go to my designer friends have a overlay made where i have to take each pic into photoshop to do it, plus i need to get photoshop on my main desktop computer right now.

Sigh so much to do and so lazy i am.

The tool I use many times is called uMark lite http://www.uconomix.com/Products/uMark/Default.aspx. It's a free software and you can put a text or graphic watermark on photos. It's very easy to use but you can only do 25 photos or so at a time. I will admit I don't do it all the time, but i will if I know someone is looking to use specific photos for there money venturing sites i.e noble Cause productions.

I usually tell people that they can use my photos on facebook or myspace but only so long as they ask me first and it's a photo of them and not of their buddy. this is being abused so I will start watermarking everyting and it won't be at the edge anymore.

One reason I haven't been watermarking is most of my photos on the net have been shrunk WAY done. To make a photo print out of them your going to lose all of the quality for a good 8X10 or greater photo. I shoot at 8.1 mega pixies which will produce a photo of around 3000X2000 (there abouts) I do keep originals so if I were to sell them or someone needs use of them for print such as in add's, magazines or posters, they can be used at the higher quality for that.

Lastly I will add sometimes bluring the background can make a good photo but from feedback I have gotten from people is many people hate those photos over what is left in the background (not everyone but the people I have heard from). It gives them a since of environment of the subject. If need be I'll crop around a trash can, and always try to avoid someone holding their pepsi cup. Patients is what it takes and if I miss a shot because of it, Well it wasn't meant to be. I do have Photoshop and a few other editing softwares, but I'm no pro at their use. I'd more likely to take all month to edit one photo to my liking if I were a pro at their use. I wouldn't be happy with it 5 minutes after I thought it was perfect. And while I said before photo editing is an artform in it's own, I'm old school.

I can't be sure, Delaney, if you're upset with you for using your pictures, I've taken a few that aren't of me and are of Rachel because she doesn't get on here anymore, but I always say "Photo taken by Delaney Wade".

Don't buy disposable cameras- I bought one the first weekend, took lots of pictures, threw the camera away and haven't received a single picture yet.

Demetrius, your to funny.

No not upset.  All I am saying is ask, email is an option since it is on my business card and on my web site. It's common curtsy to ask. I'm more than happy to have people use them as long as it's on Myspace, or face book, and they ask and give credit were do, 99% of the time I will say OK to it's use as long as it's not self promotion for money. Once again Noble Cause Productions. If someone wants to use them for that reason then spread the wealth you make from your job to mine.

I'd NEVER post a Nelsen Chen photo of myself on any website and especially do it with out asking his permission first and it's not because I don't like his work, I do, i love it and respect his art. I think I could say the same for Pirate Zoe's writing. I'd never post even 1 little line from it without her knowledge and permission first

You'd be the first to ever ask, but I do thank you kindly.  :)

I guess that's the musician in me, give credit were credit is due and ask first.

You must understand that how the copy write laws are that any picuter you take even if its you on vacation is copy writen to you and any use of it that is not granted is breaking the law. This also goes to the wonderful work Zoe writes. In the digital age of sharing stuff this is easy to forget but even if you go and scan in or copy a school picture you are breaking copy write laws. Also i know someone that had given a friend a picture she took so the friend can put it on myspace well the friend went and put it in a photo contest and it won but the person that took it wasn't given credit. Once again this is a big no no and some people don't understand this.

Hey- Arent You?

it should also be remembered..... that the subjects of the photos have legal rights too, especially if they are professional performers and engaged in performance.  For example, JUST an example, if Delaney were to use photos of nobel cause to promote her photography services, NC would be within their rights to stop her, because they had not granted her rights to use their image and likeness for profit.

most photogs just want credit, and putting your copyright mark on the edge accomplishes that.  I have tons of Nelsons photos on our site, and he was happy to let me take them, as long as I wasn't going to sell the photos themselves.

if someone took photos of my performance, and then wanted me to pay for them, i would likely say "no. and please don't take any more photos of me performing, and I'm going to need you to destroy the ones you already took."

once you have granted rights, you have no recourse.  ask Marquish.  he was RPFN's poster boy for years after he quit the faire.

most people just figure even is even and fair is fair.

The photos from week 6 are up and viewable. I didn't take as many as normal and I didn't do MUCH editing on them including some that seem to lean one way or the other.

I did however Photoshop 1 photo. I needed to try it as something was there I didn;t want. I'm not expert at Photoshop and in relaity I'd consider myself a total Newbie at it's use... well almost newbie as I have done very little with the software before except minor things.

Find the photo and tell me what you think of the edit compared to the none edit.

The photos are in the normal spot at www.pbase.com/delaneyalysa

There is a HUGE section of RenaissanceBarbie and gang. I hope you girls enjoy them., Granted there no Nelson Chen but some are pretty good (not my oppinon... others telling me that)

It seems this gallery is a busy place as I seem to get upwards to 1700 hits a day. Not sure how this reflects on visitors but it sure is fun seeing that high of hits and what photos seem to have the most hits.

Depends entirely on the definition ... I've been taking photos for the newspaper for a long while now ... at least the photos on the new site still belong entirely to me.  =)
