I once met Douglas Adams... at a reading/signing of So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish in Boulder CO (at the Boulder Book Store, in fact).  I couldn't affird the book at the time, but I did want to meet him, so I stood in the very long line, waited patiently, and when it was my turn I smiled, told him how much I had always enjoyed his work, apologized for not buying his book and presented him with my most treasured lapel pin, which said "I'm sure you're considered very good looking on your home planet"...

He didn't seem very amused...  In fact, he didn't even smile, just sort of looked past me to the next person in line.  I was rather crushed... and I still haven't read that book.
