I hope this isn't too off-topic to upset people.  I wanted to pass this invitation on to the rennie community here in the Scarborough area.  If you enjoy the music of our time period (e.g. Cantiga, Istanpitta, etc.) then this might interest you.

Starting Thursday, September 24, 2009, Patricia and I will be hosting a weekly instrumental early music gathering.  The aim is to recreate the casual, light-hearted atmosphere of regular gatherings of family and friends who enjoy playing music; a tradition lost in the last couple of centuries.  Here are the details:

Starts 7:00 PM (sharp) and runs until whenever.

Instrumentalists of all skill levels (including "never touched this instrument before") are invited.

The first hour will be devoted teaching basic music theory, reading music, and instrumental technique to those who are just starting.  People interested in learning to play are encouraged to come and learn.  Experienced musicians are asked to come and share their knowledge.  We will also have resources available to newer musicians to help them practice in between sessions.

The remainder of the time will be spent "jamming".  Experienced musicians should have fun and expand their knowledge of early music.  Newer musicians are strongly encouraged to keep up the best they can, and not to worry about screwing up.

This is low-key, casual, and,  we hope, unintimidating (think: a bunch of friends, family, and neighbors who just got done with a long hard day in the fields).

Sorry, no audience.  All attendees are expected to participate and play.  This is a very important part of keeping this unintimidating to newer players.

At this time, we are only instrumental.  We are interested, though, in exploring how we might also work with choirs.

We will focus on medieval, gypsy, Renaissance, Celtic, baroque, and possible some early classical music.

We will have snacks and a small selection of beers available.

You are welcome to bring snacks to share, and any alcohol /non-alcohol drinks you wish (remember, this is casual).

Please bring your instrument.  If you have any music stands, please bring them too.  We will have loaner music and stands on hand.

Dress code is mundane.

Location: 713 Winifred Dr., Garland, TX 75041
Contact: Will Meriic (wmeriic@tx.rr.com)
Warnings: The house is not kid-safe.  The house contains allergens such as cats, felines, and pussies so come prepared (e.g. wear bug spray).

Please pass this on to anyone you think might be interested (rennie or not).

Sincerely,

Will Meriic and Patricia Healy

If you ever reach a point for an impromptu recital, I'd love to be an encouraging audience!

Best of luck. Sounds fun!

Sounds like fun. Let me ask my son if he would like to go and I'll let you know.

Is this to be a weekly thing on every Thursday? I ask because I'd love to participate, but as I'm in Denton at UNT, the drive isn't quite Thursday-friendly.

Yes, we are holding this weekly.  So, you shouldn't feel obligated to come every week.  You could come a couple times a month, or when ever you have the evening free.
