The trailer gave me some chills seeing it in the theater.
My brother-in-law told me the other day that "The Hobbit" will be told in 3 movies now instead of 2. That should be better for generating interest in Renfaires through 2015. Huzzah!
I've been further told (by the Mrs.) that the Hobbit movies are going to include more background stories that tie into the Lord of the Rings. Making prequels is all the rage now.
I wonder if its background from the LOTR or background from the Silmarillion.
I will admit I will go and see it, all three parts, in the theatre. But I wonder why they go through the work of adding to a single book to the point where it takes 3 films, after taking so much out of the LotR books to do those movies. I'm reading The Hobbit to the kids right now, and it is such a complete, yet simple story.
The Don's thoughts were maybe they will get the complete book in this time. But who knows?
It is odd to drag 1 book out into 3 movies. I guess that's the rage now. I believe that the background will all be about LoTR.
I think you may be right, Craigmeister. I've read that they are bringing popular characters such as Legolas, who was not in The Hobbit, back for these films.
I've heard they might be adding in Tom Bombadil, and Goldberry, and a bunch of other characters that had parts in LotR, and in other stories.
I remember hearing the news about The Hobbit being split into three movies. Most likely, I will go to see all three parts of The Hobbit. I wonder how they will manager to put enough material into number three though. I am guessing they will use material in the appendices of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Legolas inspired me to buy my first bow. It was a piece of junk compound bow though. A few years ago I was blessed to find a very nice longbow from Stickbow Archery at the 4 Winds Faire in Texas.
The seventh doctor (Sylvestor McCoy) will be in it. He will play the part of Radagast the Brown. Ninth doctor will be the bad guy in the next Thor movie
I started re-reading "The Hobbit" today. I'm getting excited about the movie!
Yes! I want to re-read it too but my son has my copy and he lives in another state. :( Guess it's roadtrip time!
I just finished reading the Hobbit to the kiddos. Trying LotR now, but it doesn't hold their attention as well.

I think I'm on my third copy. The original was read so much that it started to look ragged.
Have this one and the second after this one on old VHS the original cartoon versions of this story, ought to be good in real-life.
I used to listen to the band "The Police" a lot in the 80's. I've never officially heard but have wondered if Gordon Sumner took the name "Sting" from Bilbo's sword in The Hobbit. Does anyone have any insight on this?
Craigmeister
he got the name cause he used to wear a yellow and black striped sweater all the time that made him look like a bumblebee
I need to call our local theatre to see if they will allow costumes for the premier showing.
most definitely planning on buying tickets tomorrow when they go on sale
That's funny.
Call me a buzzkill but I'm going to wait a few days after the movie comes out & see a matinee. I'd not thought of dressing up in my Robin Hood garb to see the show. It doesn't really fit in w/ the theme anyway.
I have a first edition, hard back, Hobbit... as well as first ed. LOTR... the ones with the colored gold leaf on the covers. 8) These are a worth a good bit to me and i would run back into a burning building to save them. I keep them in a shadow box, under lock & key, and only remove them for personal reading... about once every other year.

Just get a group to go barefoot, in the hobbit manner.

I don't do opening days for kid/family movies,
especially those based on a popular book series. Ever.
Too crowded, too many young kids, and too many 'talkers' in the audience doing scene-by-scene critiques. There are also teens invariably texting away about the movie, even though phones are supposed to be turned off.
A couple times a month I split the last day of the work week between Friday and Saturday. The first matinee on a Friday afternoon before the kids are out of school is the best time to go. The theater is about 2/3 full, and no lines to wait in. By the time we leave, we are usually walking past a large queue for the next showing.
we are going to see the 11:00am showing at the Venitian Theater. (http://venetiantheaters.com/)

Enjoy! We want to see this, but we still have some work to do on the house before Christmas. We haven't even put up a tree yet.
I'm looking at a matinee on Monday for my viewing...
Saw it yesterday evening. My take...........
Visually stunning. Lots of excellent animation which doesn't look like animation at all. I understand it was filmed in New Zealand, the scenery at times was WOW.
Cast - Excellent. The group of dwarfs are interesting, and at times very funny. Actor that played a young Bilbo totally pulled it off.
Story moves along pretty good for a movie that's 170 minutes long. A few spots that were alittle slow, but for the most part....things flowed real well.
Several "items" and several characters that were in the LOTR were back.
Enjoyed it allot!!
I would give it 4 1/2 stars out of 5
The scenery and cinematography were great! I'm thinking a lot of that was due to the angles used for the 3-D version of the movie. Hobbiton is so peaceful looking (until the Sackville Baggins come nosing around).
I'm glad to see that Gandalf got to use some of his wizardry. There was a lot more of Radagast than I expected as well. Can't wait to see the wizards battle Necromancer in one of the next few movies. I don't know the last movie I saw three wizards in. I've seen one pitted against another in more than a few.
Four and a half stars sounds about right.
I really enjoyed it. I've noticed a few snippets in some of the trailers that weren't in the movie we saw on Dec. 15. I suspect (as usual) that there is a director's cut in the future.
I saw this movie with my husband back on Dec. 14th, and I loved it. I thought that the scenery was great, and I like the bits and pieces they added from the books (and the LOTR appendices). Martin Freeman fits the role as Bilbo, and Sir Ian McKellen, as always, fits Gandalf's role again wonderfully. I thought the pacing worked well with the movie.
I started watching BBC's "Robin Hood" on Net Flix a couple of months ago. Then I ran across a picture of Thorin Oakenshield. I recognized him as Guy of Gisborne. That was a shocker b/c Guy is quite the jerk on "Robin Hood". Richard Armitage can play a guy with a chip on his shoulder quite well. He doesn't like to take any guff from dragons, orcs or Merry Men.
I watched The Hobbit: Unexpected Journey and I like this move.
I finally saw "Battle Of The Five Armies" today. I enjoyed all of the action. The 2 1/2 hours seemed to go by rather quickly. I really enjoyed the way that Galadriel, Mithrandir, Sauroman and Elrond battled Sauron. That was surprising.
I watched "The Desolation Of Smaug" with my wife, niece and nephew in January. When it ended with Smaug flying towards Lake Town, both my wife and niece said "THAT'S IT?!?" I started laughing. I let my niece know that when the first Star Wars movies ended, we had to wait 3 years for the next one to come out. She was shocked. We're really spoiled these days with sequels.
