Baroness Doune - is this your own list of personal favorites?  A list of recommendations?  Or are you compiling an all inclusive list?  If this is an all inclusive list which you plan to maintain,  you might want to include the date of the movie as there are often more than one releases with the same name.  For instance, there are many Ivanhoe movies.  I have one on DVD that is from 1997 that was originally a tv mini series and came in an A&E collection.

If you're putting together an all inclusive list, I have some titles I could add.  If it's just recommendations, the release date will help people who might want to rent the movie know which one you are referring to.  Either way, it's a great idea! Thanks for putting it together.

This is just a listing of the movies related to this time period that I have in my personal collection and that I could find lying around.

I do own several versions of some movies, for example Lion in Winter and MacBeth.  But you are right, Scarlett, the dates would be helpful.  I will be adding the dates.

Please feel free to add others to the list.

The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey is a movie about the Black Death. This came out in 1988 and is in Black and white and Color. The story is about a young boys dream of the future as they seek a cure for the Black Death. The Color is modern times, but the Black and WHite are during the time of the Black Death.

It is an interestng movie and quite good. It is also near to impossible to find on DVD for America

Technically, pirates movies would take place after the Renaissance as stated by the Baroness (circa 1450-1600). I'll go look but I thought there was a separate thread for pirate movies (maybe I'm thinking of the old board)

I think the old posts should stay.  I rather like the longer descriptions (I promptly ordered The Navigator:  A Time Travel Adventure) and additional suggestions, even though they are OOP.
There were topics on the old board that ran into many, many pages.

But maybe a sticky might be in order.  Amras?

Wow - I haven't been on this thread since my original post.  How the list has grown!  Brava Baroness for taking the initiative!

Anyway, after investigating the actual time periods, I have only two more to add:

Ren - Lorna Doone (2000)
Dark Ages - Tristan & Isolde (2006)

It seems the rest of the films I had in mind are set in the early to mid 1700s, and it appears the 1600s is the cut off here.

Lorne Doone is set in the time period of Monmouth's Rebellion (1685) in Exmoor, Devonshire.  But it looks like an interesting movie that I will need to add to my Blockbuster list.  The IMBD mentions a 1951 version.

I'm not sure what years but they are The Three Musketeers movies from the 70's starring Michael York.

I noticed The Three Musketeers wasn't listed at all in the first post or did I just not read it. At any rate this is one that should be added. It's much more say artistic than the 90's Disney version, but both are good watches either way. Also, The Musketeer is good action packed very good stunts.

Some other titles:

Fantasy/Fiction: Ever After (w/Drew Barrymoreand Dougray Scott movie based on Cinderella story)

Brotherhood of The Wolf (1700's circa based in France and about a Lord engineering a
                                                          beast that terrorizes the countryside)

The Count of Monte Cristo(Revenge flick set in the time of Napoleon)

Cutthroat Island(pirate movie with Matthew Modine and Geena Davis)

Shadow of The Sword(one boy raised in the church, one as a mercenary childhood
friends, but religion and duty coem between them.)

Dracula The Dark Prince( Filmed based and scenes are taking from the life of Vlad
                                                         Tepes, not a vampire flick.)
These are some of the titles in my collection. You already listed the others I have so it'd be redundant to list them here. The first list though is very good, it should get anyone whom is looking to start a medieval age/renaissance movie collection off on the right track.

Baroness:

Not being critical, as the list is a marvelous effort on your part and I applaud it, but there is one small change that needs to be made.  Adventures of Don Juan needs to be removed from the middle ages list which ends at about mid 15th century to the renaissance period.  The movie was set in mid to later 16th century having made mention/reference in it of Phillip II and Q.E. I and Sir Francis Drake.

Found at the dollar store during their 1/2 price sale-

The Pied Piper of Hamelin

Couldn't find a date on it. Its a cheezy costume semi musical farce with Van Johnson, Claude Rains and Jim Backus. Its an ok flick if you're under 10 or enjoy seeing distinguished actors in roles that MUST have involved blackmail.

The Disney version of Hunchback, my brother was mentioning it the other day, and the scenes are quite historically accurate for a cartoon. One, cartoon I love for being medieval/very early renaissance is the Disney version of Sleeping Beauty the live action one with Raquel Welch's daughter isn't bad either. Also, the Disney Robin Hood and Sword in the Stone. I'll make a list one of these days and post it if I haven't already, there are just too many to list.

Blakduke you are quite right in your observations of time periods. It is quite hard to make these fine distinctions to the general viewing public, because when most people see sword fighting and costumes they think renaissance or medieval. I'm with you on this, I listed Count of Monte Cristo as such a film, but upon further review it takes place a little time after the Napoleonic Wars, so way ahead in time of the middle ages and renaissance, but again costumes and sword fighting. That's why I listed it as such. I didn't know that sword fighting was still done in that time. I thought dueling pistols were all the rage, but I guess in Europe the honor of fighting with a sword was still highly regarded.

I have got a few more to add.  I hope I have not duplicated someone else, but I do recall seeing these and one of them,  had it appeared would have absolutely floored me.

1951  The Magic Carpet - This movie starred Lucille Ball.  Someone in an earlier post mentioned films involving blackmail,
well, that is what this one was.  L.Ball was under contract for one more film to Columbia, and the studio offered this
thinking that she would not take it.  She fooled them, did the picture and exited Columbia immediatly after.  Also she
        was pregnant at the time.

1953  Master of Ballantrae --- Errol Flynn

1963  Swordsman of Sienna  -----  Stewart Granger

1952  Scaramouche  ----   Stewart Granger

1952  Prisoner of Zenda  ----  Stewart Granger

1953  Knights of the Round Table --- Robert Taylor

1952  Quo Vadis  --- Robert Taylor

1960  Solomon and Sheba --  Yul Brenner / Gina Lollabrigeda(sp)  This contains one of the most risque harem dances for the
period.  I am surprised it made it past the censors.  If they made today she would have been naked.

Maybe I can think of some more later on.

PS:  I went back and looked at the thread title and those last 2 should not be listed since they are prior to the Dark Ages--- sorry 'bout that

PPS:  OMG  how could I forget

1950  Cyrano DeBergerac --- Jose Ferrer

and this next one has not seen the light of day for years, I am not sure a copy even exists any more

195?  Lady in the Iron Mask

I sort of class the age just before the fall of the Roman Empire, like the dark ages, an age of sword fighting and no real high-technology, so Blakduke, don't be too hard on yourself., those last two Quo Vadis and Solomon and Sheba, are no wlisted and thanks for sharing because now I'll hunt them down to see them. I like the real old stuff as well. In fact this thread should've been entitled any movie that dealt with history before the age of Napoleon.

Just finished "Ironclad". A little short on plot, WAAAY high on the gruesome scale. 1215 AD setting. Choppy jerky fight scenes make it hard to tell who's winning. Like the recent Robin Hood movie there's lots of familiar faces in the cast. Excellent props.

Another year brings some new titles-

Season of the Witch. Nick Cage, Ron Perlman, the black plague and witchs.
Kingdom of Heaven.  Will Turner vs Islam during the crusades.
Pillars of the Earth. Miniseries about corruption while building a cathedral.  Too much T & A and cgi blood splatter.  Good plot.
In the Name of the King 2.  Dolph Lundgren, time travel, Hokey but fun.
