Title: Sherwood Forest Faire
Post by: rengypsy on May 13, 2008, 08:47:13 AM
Remember Sherwood Forest Faire...coming soon. Should have a website within the next month.  Opening in 2010...35 miles east of Austin on U.S. Highway 290.  87 acres, wooded--Beautiful Oaks and Pines.  25 Acre faire grounds, Camping.  Theme: King Richard the Lion Hearted is off fighting Saladin in the Holy Lands.  Robin Hood and his Merry Band of scoundrals rule Sherwood Forest...and the Sheriff of Nottingham is always two steps behind.  Occasional appearances of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine.  There will be a pub, famous to this day for the meeting place in England where folk met to head to fight the Crusades named "Ye Ol' Trip to Jerusalem".  There will be an enchanted area from whence creatures of fantasy shall flow.  And, to peer into the future a bit...Shakespeare and Marlow will fill a stage with their works of wit and sorrow.  Pirates, Gypsies, Ogres and Fairies, Troubadors and Fortune Tellers, Jugglers, and raving lunatics will fill the streets.

Looking for ideas, questions, thoughts and dreams...

Please feel free to add your bit a vision to the creation of this fantasy come true.

Woo Hoo!
You're back.
Anything besides the pub going to be named after a famous location?
Maybe like Santiago de Compostella on the Pilgrim's Path in Spain?

would love to have that post with the hobbit pics back up

also would like ideas and drawings for the BEST renaissance grounds layout.

i am thinking there will be a town square within the grounds.  any thoughts?

I think someone proposed 3 rings once upon a time, with all the food and pubs concentrated around the spot where the rings intersected. The stages would anchor the center and far ends.
I thought that was a pretty good idea.

Don't forget the adults-only area. That will need a way to verify age before entering. Probably off to the side a bit.

will plan an outting soon after the closing to dialogue, drum and burn a bit of sage to bless the grounds in a good ol renaissance way.

since i have lost emails and contacts from the previous forum, i will need to hear from you if you'd like an invite.  this will not a working weekend, but rather a fun time to eat, drink and be merry as we vision the grounds layout.

no running water, tho there is an outhouse at the place.  so, it will be a bit rugged for our campout.

yall will fall in love with the beauty of the property.

sherwood forest faire is seeking art/graphic design work.

here is the essence of the faire theme:

sherwood forest faire

setting is about 1200 ad, nottinghamshire
richard the lionhearted is king.  he is off fighting in the holylands (the crusades).  robin hood and his merry men are trapsing about sherwood forest.  the sheriff is fairly inept at catching him.
its a faire happening.
there are some transcendant links between reality and fantasy.  fairies and trolls, dragons and hobbits enhabit certain parts of the woods.
its a family occasion w/games and gallentry--jousts and men at arms.
gypsies tell fortunes and sell trinkets on the outskirts of the woods.
artisans have erected their tents and are selling their wares.
actors, musicians and troubadors have come from the four corners to entertain on make shift stages and wooden crates.
drummers mezmerize bystanders as they play the most ancient of rhythms around a fire circle.

country and city folk alike have come from miles around...some for the day, some camping for the entirety of the festival.

anachronistic appearances by shakespeare and his troupe also shall have their moment on stage.

plenty of food and drink.

a pirate's ship has found its way upstream...and a band of them are causing havoc about their vessel.

i need freelance graphic design/art work for the following:

1) logo
2) putting my grounds into graphic layout for presentation, promotions, and conceptual construction plans
3) posters, t-shirt, souvenir artistry that fits the above mentioned themes

if interested, email me links to your portfolio, your pricing/fees, etc.  i would expect to purchase the work free of copywrite so the faire can own the work and reproduce it.

cheers,

Marco Polo is generally credited with having brought gunpowder back to Europe from China in the 13th century. The period for this faire is a bit early for what we might commonly term fireworks, but I bet we can put something together for Sherwood that doesn't break the clock too badly.   :D

went by the land today on the way to austin.  i promise you all that you will fall in love with the grounds, even in its raw form.  once the clearing begins, fences, etc start going up, you will feel the magic that i sense in the place.

i have contracted with an austin graphic designer to come up with the logo for sherwood forest faire.

am talking to several others who may work with me on the grounds mapping to take my initial concepts and put them into form.

likewise, i am seeking a web designer for the preliminary website.  pretty much one just to wet folks appetite for what's coming, allowing folk to sign up for email updates, post pictures as land develop gets underway, etc.

i have found two astounding artists who i will commission for the first year's art work--posters, bulletins, billboards, flyers, etc.

all suggestions still sought on all aspects of faire development.

still am seeking the pics of the hobbit habitats a guy posted on the old website.

a bit more of thoughts...some old, some new...

--sylvan woods where the fantasy creatures abide
--pirate's cove (PG-13 and R)
--kinda want some tree-houses, though it may not come the first year
--gypsy camp
--kids' area
--pub and stage in camping area
--celtic/druidic/pagan circle
--church
--merchant tent area

Sorry it took so long to repost this Rengypsy,

The building material used in the pictures is Cob, which consists of dirt, clay, sand and straw. Very cheap to build but but very labor intensive. I know of Cob websites who will donate labor for a chance to hold cob building camps.

Also my mother got into this fairy house building kick for my niece She just became a grandmother and this kid is getting spoiled. She was going to use concrete. But for mother's day I tried using cob to build one.
This was my first attempt to try this building technique. It's still standing through all the storms. But it has cracked because I didn't have much natural clay available and also didn't white wash the exterior walls with a lime/water mixture.

Also learned of a new building method of using reformed hay bales as the main wall structure for houses. and using a lime base stucco to cover the outside walls.
Also Rammed earth is a new technique for building structures. Its a mixture of 10% concrete and earth thats compressed using a pneumatically powered backfill tamper to compress into walls.

Also craigslist is a great place to get free building materials from finished homes. I see adds for free brick and limestone for free if you haul it off.

A quick google search will bring up results.

Also really excited that there will be a faire close to home. My Satyr persona will now have a home.
And just think you might be able to have the first "Green faire" in the United States.
But I don't know much about public use of these methods other than rammed earth being used for commercial buildings and churches.

A couple of questions about the Tree-Houses --- 1) Do you intend to own and carry the liability insurance on them yourself, or do you want vendors to do so?  2) How handicap accessible is the faire going to be (i.e.- will they need to be built with ramps)?

One thing that comes to mind about having multi-story structures that faire patrons can go up into is that they'll need to be carefully placed so that service areas aren't visible from the upper stories, to preserve the illusion of faire.

You'll want to consider sheltered seating for the parents - maybe a pavilion adjacent to a food service area.

i actually was thinking about treehouse idea for acting company activities.  ie. fairies, robin hood, etc.  not for patrons...

the faire will be faire-ly handicapped accessible...as expected by law.  as much as colorado renaissance festival--hahaha--have any of you been there?  steep inclines on a mountain side.

no, no...more so.

i expect to maintain a lot of natural shade.  when clearing, the number one rule will be to painfully attempt to keep all trees feasible.  there will still be suffient open areas.  but it will be a wooded faire grounds.

I will be willing to do whatever you need for free, or a season pass for the first year. Why? Because I feel like you've got something good here and that you have a well thought out plan. While money may be no object, I enjoy this kind of work and do not see it as something to get paid for.

As for myself, I am an engineering designer for a petrochemical company based out of Kansas City, and am currently located in a branch office in Houston. I am fully experienced with AutoCAD 2000 and up and can generate drawings as you need, be it conceptual, architectural, or electrical. I also dabble in my spare time with Graphic Arts and can come up with some logo designs, should you desire.

Unfortunately, my design capabilities fall short when it comes to souvenir designs.

Hey Folks----

Looks like the Sherwood Forest Faire is truly eminent. As Rengypsy avows, the grounds are an amzing place, with plenty trees to block out the illusion of the 21st century.  I'm looking forward to meeting you who have shown such interest in this project. I think fireworks and shakespeare and most any anachronism that shuts out "modern technology" is proper and workable. If you are going to build a time machine, why not cruise around a little.  Maybe we won't invite Napoleon and his conteporaries, but i think Mideval through the Renaissance is Faire-Game.

in later phases, we will call on tanyor to advise us on construction of hobbit village in the woods set aside for camping.

please note, this is much more than a financial venture for me.  it is about sustainable community, as well.

after we close on the land in late july and have our webpage and billboard up on highway 290, we will be talking to several of you.

Autouloucous will be heading up talent search for the faire.  he is a great soul and a dear brother to me.  i know of no one who does not love him.  hopefully, amy of you will feel the same as you become part of his troupe at sherwood forest faire.

at this time, we plan to have one stage actually in the trees for robin hood and his band of outlaws.

ye olde trip to jerusalem pub will be similar to the rustic style in lord of the rings.

prepare for something i think will be quite unique and thoroughly enjoyable

promise it will not be a start up like excalibur or several of those faire who have come and gone.

sound business plan intertwined with a lifetime of being a businessman, a rennie, a ad&d nut from olde, a reader of tolkien, hobbe, feist, stephen donaldson, and the like.

my favorite period movies, beside lord of the rings, are excalibur, the lion in winter, and ladyhawk...to mention a few off the top of my head.

i think life and work and pleasure and community and passion for fantasy and just the spirituality of nature/drumming/ale and great friends can and should coincide.

we are passing thru this world of consciousness in a flash.  it should, as best we can direct it, be a flash of our creation and design.

help make this faire one of the best...for each of you, i hope, will take your own "brush" and paint your strokes of what it can and should be.

blessings to you all.

Your talking about "THE PRANCING PONY"  types for the Inn/slash pub?

I was wondering how your tackling general construction of the faire as in hiring general contractors and such.
Because I might be changing company's and I will have 2 weeks off at a time.

If you can rent a front end loader tractor we can make that hobbit village with natural materials at almost quarter the cost.
Are you planning on making the hobbit village for camping?

ok, most of you on here have heard what i am planning for swff.  it will develop in phases over the years...but i wanna run the basics of the first year by yall and get your take on it.  it's gotta be great for a first year faire.  its gotta be something everyone who comes says, "wow. worth trying to make it back before the last weekend.  and, i wonder what next year will bring?"

but, it will still be a first year faire.  no illusions.

some of the basics:

no chain link fences or plastic on the faire grounds
flush privies
one pub--accessible during the faire, as well as at nite
four stages + 6-8 platforms--stages for acting and platforms for music or one man/woman shows
joust area (hold your breath for what i have planned for joust)
fairie / fantasy woods
kids area
games
vendors
--jewelry
--clothing
--leather
--swords
--pottery
--glass
--a few demonstrations
--wooden mugs
--nenna
--hand in wax
--fortune telling
--walking sticks/staves
--pewter
--art
--heraldry
--sca possibly
--music instruments
--swords/shields for kids
--garlands
--fairie wings and horns
--souveniers
--juggling sticks and crystal balls
(others???)

a druidic stone circle w/drumming
chapel
food and drink booths
wishing well
camping privy w/showers

in the future:
more stages
town square
a statue garden
hobbit village in camp grounds (cabins to rent)
pirates cove w/ship-stage and separate pub
more privies

rengypsy,

Sounds like you foresee having four main areas in Sherwood Forrest Faire ---

1) Nottingham Castle and Town (probably near the parking and main entrance if that's where the Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem Pub will be, with access from inside and outside of the Faire)

Had another thought about this: I bet the "Castle" could be built to have the Main Entrance Gate in the middle - with the Pub on one end and an Inn at the other end (if you don't mind getting the permits to run a small Inn/Motel).  The Faire Offices could also be incorporated into one end or the other of the "Castle" building.

2) Robin Hood's Sherwood Forrest Hideout & Stage (a place for the multi-story Tree House you mentioned before)

3) Hobbit and Fae Village & Community (this may also need to be near the parking areas if you're planning to have rental cabins there)

Another thought about having rental cabins - If they're on-site (inside the fence), would there be problems with insurance and having patrons there at night without also having Security on-site all night as well?

4) Pirate Cove Lake & Ship Stage (would you have a late-night Pub here, or would the Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem Pub be the late night one?)

Wish I lived closer, so I could be more involved with helping to design & build the faire.

Take Care,
David Baldock

EDIT: Updated my thoughts about various things.
EDIT #2: Added question about insurance and having rental cabins on-site.

Oh this is so exciting.

I live in Austin and this is making me so happy to hear about. I am actually going to school as an interior designer and I have been helping my mom and dad with carpentry and all those fun Fix It type things. If you need an extra set of hands that is not scared to get down and dirty as well as knowing how to use a power tool and has a good eye for design, let me know.

I would love to get more involved and donate my time.

Hey all---

I want you who are interested in entertainment to know that we want our stage acts to make up the bulk of the running-around-the-faire actors as well. For new talent-- which we want to see a lot of--- we envision a system of apprenticeship, followed by guildsmanship, followed by mastership as one gains seniority, tenyor.  The doulble roll of stage-acting plus street-guerilla-improv will make for a long day at the faire, but it will encourage a good pace, and will be a great way to plug one's particular act while they are galavanting around.  To get this project off the ground we must all be putting in 200% of our effort, because we must build not only structures and signs and artwork, but reputation and memories for our patrons.  As the Faire develops i will be working with the entertainers, so i want to say now that it will be those who are most willing to be on thier feet, in costume, in character ALL DAY who will have the best opportunity with us.  This is how I have approached my character at the Faires i have worked, and i won't ask more than i would be willing to do my self---- Help us make this a mad-cap, energetic, unforgetalbe fest, and we will all reward each other. Hip HIP HUZZAH

we put another 18 acres adjacent to the 87 under contract--to close the same day as the rest of the land--july 31st.  this is a cleared tract which we will use as parking.  this also allows us to send patrons down old potato road off 290 or down old highway 20 off highway 21.  good traffic flow.

the billboard should be up in mid august.  you will love the design work (done by a wonderful artist living in austin).

start getting excited.  i am.

Might I suggest...

If you plan to do season passes eventually, then perhaps instead of a piece of paper that can get lost, perhaps a medallion worn around the person's neck would suffice. Plus, it serves dual purpose as a memento of that year's faire experience...

If you plan to do season passes eventually, then perhaps instead of a piece of paper that can get lost, perhaps a medallion worn around the person's neck would suffice. Plus, it serves dual purpose as a memento of that year's faire experience...

Scarborough's season passes seem to work ok. We laminate ours and they stay in our pouches. Printing a paper ticket has got to be more cost effective than getting a medallion made up.

Initially, yes, but in the long run it can work out, especially if you utilize PMC for the material or even have plastic ones made up.

In any case, this is all speculation.

Okay folks, as you may or may not know, I have been working with rengypsy recently to produce a basic layout of the fairegrounds and surrounding areas. So far, this is what we've come up with.

we put another 18 acres adjacent to the 87 under contract--to close the same day as the rest of the land--july 31st.  this is a cleared tract which we will use as parking.  this also allows us to send patrons down old potato road off 290 or down old highway 20 off highway 21.  good traffic flow.

the billboard should be up in mid august.  you will love the design work (done by a wonderful artist living in austin).

start getting excited.  i am.

Holy Guacamole!!! Ya'll are rockin' along!

Are you still planning a gathering out there after you close on the land?

How funny - Old Potato Road is one of mine & Queen Shauna's favorite "comment signs" on the journey to and fro TRF!!

Continued Blessings and Positive Vibes on your venture!!!

absolutely on the gatherings.  as soon as we close on july 31st, i will have the place mowed and half way presentable--though still primitive--for a gathering before trf cannon blasts in early october.

We close in two weeks.  Exciting.  Lord Dragonspyre has been so gracious to assist me with some design work.  Web page, though under construction and definitely a project in development, will be up in the next couple of weeks.

Have started to receive interest from a handful in participating either as entertainers or artisans.  Keep the emails coming.

Here is where I am at:
1) close on the three tracts of land (total of 105 acres)
2) erect the billboard on u.s. highway 290
3) clear the underbrush and enlarge the lake
4) set up the camphouse as an office
5) develop the basic grounds layout
6) start laying out lines for electrical, water and telephone
7) construction of basic initial structures
    a) front gate
    b) restrooms
    c) stages and music platforms
    d) faire booths
8) fencing
9) parking lot
10) camping areas
11) collapse

looks like the grounds will be laid out as follows:
three large circles w/merchants/artisans/demonstrations/food and drink booths
games
church
fantasy forest w/druid stone circle
children's area
sherwood forest stage area
about a 1/2 acre pond to be drained and turned into a amphetheatre
joust
four -eight stages
one pub w/another to be added w/adult section in phase two
nottingham town square will be phase two

hope many of you will get involved and become part of what i hope to be a fascinating and wonderful experience of faire experience at its best, of community, of an expression from the heart and imagination.

more later.

RenGypsy, I like how your are approaching this endeavor and I would like to be a part of this if I may.  I was on cast at the old Excal for 6 years playing a major role and would love to help this faire grow as I helped Excal grow.  Please let me know how I may be of assistance.

Thanks for your efforts in undertaking such a monumental endeavor.

a thousand thanks.  am truly enjoying the assistance i am receiving.  while i had hoped to gather shortly after we close on the land next week, i think, reasonably, since it is so damn hot and there is a burn ban in effect, i will postpone our gathering of common souls around a campfire until after trf.  we participate in two faires currently as merchants--trf and king richard's faire in mass.  therefore we are busy preparing to ship off to carver mass in a month.  when trf is over, we will send out notice to all inviting you to a weekend to walk the grounds, drink some great belgian ale (maredsous), drum around a campfire, and dialogue about how best to proceed.  by that time, i will have had the underbrush cleared and we can all get a better view of the grounds.

the website is coming along.  the artwork for the billboard will be ready in two weeks.  you will all love the artist's rendition of my vision of the faire.

we will need all of your thoughts, energies, and commitments to making this a fascinating and wonderful experience.

i am not--not--just a dreamer.  i am a businessman.  i do what i say.  i follow through with my ideas.  i run several businesses...and am investing a heck of a lot of financial resources of my own money into this and have every expectation that it will succeed.

i am a rennie at heart.  i have travelled the world.  i have been at trf since i was an adolescent.  i believe so much in what the rennie community offers--from a psycho-social perspective, from a spiritual/emotional perspective, and from a purely business perspective.

i think when we can all have a hand in creating, the collective, gestalt of what is created will be wonderful...and from the collage, there will sprout the beginnings of a very powerful sense of community.

stay tuned.

lord dragonspyre has been of enormous assistance in getting the grounds laid out in a graphic fashion.  i appreciate each and everyone one of you for being part of the renaissance experience.

cheers,
rengypsy

Remember to save a space for "Blackbead's Treasure Chest"!  For this faire, I can see me doing an impression of a down-on-his-luck crusader who is having to sell off the plunder he got in the last crusade.  Or maybe go for a "traveler from the East" look and try not to have the Christians throw rotting vegetables at me.  Or just do a "Thieves Market" and be selling off the goods I've acquired from the nobles as they wander through the "Green Wood"!

unbelievable discovery

this weekend, we walked more of the land than ever before.  the lake is fed by an artesian spring.  we thought it started on the neighbor's property, but it seems to bubble out of the ground on our property.  ok, so that was great news...but an even more surprising discovery was about midway through the back of the property...on the other side of the lake, there is another seasonal (now dry) creek bed...but, we walked along the creek bed, we found an amazing site: a circular pool (maybe 12-20' across) surrounded by a very cool sandstone formation...the pool filled with water and pouring into a creek that leads off the property--obviously fed by its own artesian spring--all of this hidden away in the middle of the woods.  another secret unveiled about this very magical place.

blessings to you all.

Me too ;D! I am so happy that it is even more magical than you believed. It is going to be wonderful! Mom and I are so very excited and want you to mark Chameleon Dreams down as a vendor. We sell ladies raiment's and accessories. Bring pictures with you on Saturday if you get a chance, I am working on a few new Fae costumes for some friends and I bet that lime stone pond would be of great inspiration, you just don't see as much beauty in nature when all you get are some trees choked by concrete.... I hope you can still make it out! We will be setting up around 4-5 but feel free to come whenever you want. The days have been high nineties to low hundreds but the evenings have been downright chilly so be prepared for anything... it is Texas after all ;)

See you on the inside...

alyria, apologies. had every intention to make it last weekend, but my 8-5 job caused me to have to attend an all-day and nite fundraiser for a not for profit in town.  would love to hook up in september if in the state, or at least at TRF where i will be every weekend.

i am promised (keep your fingers crossed) that the website will be up no later than sept. 1st (yes, this year).

www.swf-faire.com
www.sherwoodforestfaire.com

apps will be in pdf form.

would love folk to begin getting excited about the prospects of being a part of the faire during the first year.

bulldozer work begins this weekend, at the earliest, or on sept 2nd at the latest.  should have most of the clearing done before TRF starts...and construction to begin on some of the structures shortly after that.

i believe with all my heart and soul that you will think it a quite magical place and will want to be a part of the experience.

blessings,

more ideas???

i am interested in a kids section.  dreamt about it most of the nite.  thinking of sandcastle area, toesack races...need other art ideas for kids outside.

I will be starting on detailed plans for pre-built shops soon, along with designs for pubs, stages, and the like.

met with the county development services today.  site plan is next needed to submit.  the clearing of land is going great.

we need vendors to start getting excited...and submitting apps.  have two food vendors, a games vendor, and three new artisan vendors.

in december, if we can get the site plan completed and permits obtained, we will start construction on the following:

front gate
ye olde trip to jerusalem pub
restrooms/showers
and one of the stage areas
