Title: What do you drink from?
Post by: 609wood on September 20, 2013, 11:20:35 PM
Tankard, stein, horn or glass?  What do you drink from and why?  Does your local renfest pour into your cup without using a disposable plastic cup or do they "count cups"?
I picked up a nice williamsburg kirk stieff pewter tankard on Ebay which seems suitable for pirate as well as renasance wear. It was somewhat gray with oxidation and had several scratches but it buffed out beautifully with a little Flits metal polish and a few paper towels.  Here is a picture. It was very reasonable and much nicer than what I was finding tin the local antique stores.

I would like to see what you have and hear how you came by it. Thanks.

Most of the time, I use a wooden mug purchased at Wondrous Works in Wood.  Great size, and beautiful.  The patterns are unique to each mug, so I picked out the one I liked best, and enjoy looking at it every time I use it.

In a tiny faire that's no longer in existence in Iowa, a merchant was selling wooden goblets for $4.  Lathe-turned and very beautiful.  I bought one, and on the way out of the faire, I found another one just like it, a bit smaller, in the parking lot.  I gave that one to a friend.

For noble garb, Steve found some beautiful silver goblets on Ebay.  They have a gold stripe around the top where you drink from.  They don't hold as much as a mug, so we only use them for noble garb, when we want to sip.

At Bristol, when I get soda, they usually take my mug and fill it directly.  I don't drink beer or wine, so I'm not 100% sure, because whenever Steve comes back from the pub with a beer, he already has it in his mug.

I  generally  use  my pewtinium  tankard  from ballena bay.

I  love how cool it keeps things,  And I also love that I can put hot drinks in it.  I'm a big fan of hot cider.
The faire I go to won't fill the mug  up.  I just pour  the plastic cup  in.

I have a Goblet I purchased last year from a vendor at the Janesville Renaissance festival. A small festival dubbed "Bristol lite" .

i have a leather mug from ulfric leather (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ulfric-Leather/49982849373) that's really well made. it's lined with beeswax inside, but that doesn't affect the flavor. his facebook page has been updated, but ulfric's site is down, it seems...

When you have a Grichel, you don't need a mug!

I've almost got that sorted. You can barely taste the chlorine anymore.  ;)

I keep my eyes out for pottery mugs at the thrift stores. So far I have three that I like, two with handles and one without.

When I'm getting my morning coffee drink at Sherwood, the Paleo Puffin just put the coffee drink in my Wondrous Works of Wood mug. I haven't tried it at TRF yet, but that will change in a few weeks!

When the husband and I want to bring water inside with us, we have a few ways. We will either just bring in about half a days worth of bottled water with us in our bags ( he will go through two bottles just eating a meal), or use our drinking gourds. He has a plain one that clips onto his belt, and I have a decorated one that goes with my haik. I don't have a gourd/bota bag to go with my Templar outfit yet but I'm looking.

Milord and I both use tall pewter goblets that we purchased many years ago at an antique mall, along with some Wilton Pewter plates.
We like them for hot weather because the thick metal stays COLD.

Both TRF and Scarborough 'count cups' so they pour the plastic cup into our goblets. But most of the bartenders will give the goblets a shake with ice first to chill them down.

Don't worry about the cat in the background.   ;)

I sometimes have a silver goblet, a red glass goblet, or this.  I normally carry this around because my Dad got it for me just for my "Renaissance stuff".  In the SCA, the seahorse (the handle of the mug) is the symbol of Atlantia (MD, VA, NC, SC, and a tiny sliver of GA).  Although it should have a unicornate (a horn), most people don't bother and just carry stuff around with seahorses on it.  This was my Dad's contribution to my obsession.  ;-)

I also purchased my soon his first mug. (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/09/24/5anu6a5a.jpg)

My daughter and I each have a tin lined copper mug that we wear on our belts.  Like the pewter, they stay nice and COLD!  We also have a couple of pewter goblets we carried before we found the mugs, but they are heavier, and less easily carried, so they tend to stay home now.

Wild Bill's Soda stainless steel mug. Yep. It even has a bucking bronco on the side. It's huge, light and makes an awesome drum.

I used to drink from a tin cup I covered in knotwork (square knotwork, if you know what that it).  But I got tired of the steel taste.  So, I switched to a pewter mug that I again covered in knotwork.  The mug used to have a crest on it from some intermural hockey club somewhere in New England; I filed and sanded that off so it is now a blank crest under the knotwork.  It is a bit heavier than the tin cup, yes.  The handle gets MUCH hotter from coffee!  I hold it by the knotwork in those cases.  I also have a cord tied to the handle, that I also tie to the wrist of my drinking hand, so I don't leave my cup anywhere!

Leather mug. Beeswax outside, brewer's pitch inside.
Bob, my son made a jack for himself.  The inside is coated with a mix of brewers pitch and beeswax.  He learned of this combo from some of his leatherworking community.  He melted them both together and applied them while still liquid.  The coating isn't nearly as brittle as beeswax alone, and doesn't smell nearly as fragrant as brewer's pitch alone.

I have a mug and straw from Wondrous Works in Wood. It's some sort of dark wood with an almost purplish tone. I cracked it (fell backwards into a tree, long story) and they fixed it good as new in five days. Love them, love it.

These!

The tankard is a hand made copy of a 16th C one, and holds an imperial half pint (10fl oz).  I've had it for many years, and it has occasionally been dropped, so is a might bent in places!  Mind you, it's so solid it chipped a paving block and suffered no damage on one occasion!  It's my Go To beer and cider mug for things like the Rochester Sweeps festival and my LARP events.

The goblet holds about 5fl oz and is perfect for things like mead.

The tankard often gets attached to my belt if i'm out and about, with a lovely leather buckled strap made for me by a LARP leaher worker, but the goblet stays put in camp!  I also have a nice fine lipped pair of stoneware goblets that we use as wine cups.  They too stay in camp.  And we have the 1pint stoneware mugs that are used for tea, coffee, and water.  They are made by a potter specializing in hand thrown repro medieval pottery.  I don't as yet have pictures of them.  The joyful thing about being attached to a group that runs an in character pub is that we get to use these lovely things all the time in camp!

I had one of the ubiquitous wood mugs for a while, but after I broke the handle off several years ago I replaced it with this stainless unit; it's tough, insulated, and shiny!

you can't see it so well, but it has Merlin's 'charm of making' engraved on it.

David and I have plain brass goblets we purchased at faire from an enterprising vendor who specializes id scavenging thrift stores.  We paid $7.00 each-they hold about 8oz.
I would like to have a larger one, but I'm too cheap to spend $30-$40 for one. Still keeping my eye out.
One of my favorite mugs is a nice, heavy, shiny stainless steel one that I picked up ia few years ago in Des Moines at a clearance table outside of an awards shop.  It looks nearly identical to Zardoz's tankard and the heavy metal keeps the beverages cool. It holds about  12-16oz.
   I paid $6.00 for it.
I still need to find a pretty mug lid for this.
I have used over sized corks and sometimes, a square of fabric that is weighted on the corners that I can use for my goblet too.

I have gone through several mugs in the years that I have attended faire. I like the leather ones with the wax seal but you can't drink hot beverages from them. I love the one mug that I bought online many years ago that has the Rogues Guild emblem on one side and my guild name on the other. I can't remember how much I paid for it, but it was a considerable sum ($80+), but I retired it a long time ago as I think it has a crack in it near the lip. The mug I use now is pewter-like (don't remember the name of the material) that I bought at TnRF 10 years ago that holds a pint or so. It isn't fancy, but I like the look of it and it is solid.

I purchased this goblet on ebay a few years ago for $10.  I believe it's pewter, but not quite sure.  Large enough to hold 24oz of beer, huzzah!  My local festival won't pour into your own goblet, but will let you purchase two beers at the same time so I can pour them myself.
