Title: Who's Goin' When' in 2011
Post by: Ryk Rakham on March 01, 2011, 02:37:51 PM
We are planning our return to OKRF after a 4 year hiatus. Hoping to make some new Okie Ren Friends. We'll be driving over from Ardmore and spending at least one weekend, not sure which one yet.

We're considering making the trip up. It's actually the closest "hard" faire to our castle, even though we consider Scarby home. I'll need to check to see when I can get away from work...

Merlin, if you and Lady Nimue will be there, then Scally and I will most definitely figure out a way to be there, as well!  Let me know when, and we'll make it happen!

And, if you guys all go, please let us know...we'd love to meet you guys. Hopefully we will get a chance to meet at Scarby.

If you're coming to either preview or opening weekend, my bride and I will be in attendance. We are also booked for RenDezvous...actually booked, at least in Castle Rock. Trying to decide which stopping spots to use on the way up/back.

Season pass is a good thing when OKRF Castleton is just down the road a few miles.

Sherry and I will be there for sure opening weekend. We are going to Norman M/F on the Saturday the day before the preview and we have RSVP to be there Sunday for preview. We are going to try and make at least 6 weekends to Scarby this year, perhaps 7.

Oh, that will be the weekend we're at Spirit of Magic... darn!  I think there might be a few R/Fer's there that weekend, though, so maybe you'll get to visit with some of them!

I was considering that weekend myself, but maybe hitting both faires. That's still iffy. You're working SoM, aren't you, Rani?

Okay now ... rooms at the local inn—CHECK! ... tickets to faire purchased (to be printed at work tomorrow)—CHECK! ... dogs have their reservation confirmed at the dog spa—CHECK ...Homer, the Odyssey cleaned—CHECK! ... spending money—NO CHECK! CASH!

Merlin the Elder, Nimue, and a faire virgin (not a fair virgin, so back off. He may not be your type!) will be at the Castle for opening cannon this weekend.  Looking forward to our first visit to your faire!

Hey!  He might be just MY type!!!  :P  :D  Well, provided he's been whelped, anyway!  ;)

Ok, I'm... pretty sure... we'll be able to head that way this weekend (Gods willin' an' th' creek don't rise), after looking at finances.  Particularly since I'll have a bit extra coming in within a week or two...  We'll have to sleep in the van, but that's been done before, so no major hassle there.  The budget will be tight, but we've gone to Faire with less, so I know we'll have fun... especially since we'll have friends there with whom to explore a new realm!!!

If you get there about 10:00 they've been doing alot of preview of what is going on.  King Henry has been ordering the gates to open timely, in person.

If you want water, visit the Thorn and Thistle (north end of the compound near the human chessboard) where it is available in many pitchers and they've not been charging for water at that location but it is the only one with free cold ice water located so far.   Water, good and cold,  costs two bucks if you go to any other locations/pubs.

Mead and wine tasting at the clock tower,  where you can see the Birds of Prey in action.

Enjoy.

Angus, we're at the Hampton, but I think it's right next to the HI Express.  We may be late getting into town Friday night (I say late because we're used to an early bedtime!)  I'll be looking for you at cannon Saturday morning, tho'. Rani, I hope the planets line up for you. They actually are supposed to, you know!

We'll likely shoot for a Saturday morning arrival, so we'll only have one night in the van... but Merlin, you and Angus both have my number, so I can be reached.  I can't remember if you told me that Lady Nimue carries a magic box with her, or not, but if so, then she is certainly most welcome to use it to ascertain the whereabouts of Scally and myself!

Oh, and at least one of us will be piratin', come the weekend!!!  ;)  :D

Well, I'm all excited about our trip to Castleton! We'll be meeting some friends in person for the first time. Weather looks better every time I check. It's supposed to be cool, making it my first cool faire of the year, despite the fact that the first one was mid-February.

A notice to all who may hail us as we walk the faire: Nim and I both have some hearing deficiencies, so if we don't actually see you, we may not be hearing you. Sometimes we ignore, but it's not on purpose!

See everyone Saturday! HUZZAH!

Oh, sometimes I just don't even think!!!  ::)  I took cash off my prepaid debit card for the trip, and basically emptied it filling up the tank, and then realized I hadn't bought my tickets yet.  It's going to cost us an extra $8 to buy them at the gate, all because I wasn't thinking...  (sigh)

Does anyone have extras that they'd be willing to sell us at the online price?  We'll need two adult and two child tickets...

Rani, the gypsy/belly dancer group that we hung out with at the King's Champion have made a big splash/hit with their show this year.  If you can reach them by text or email, they may be able to leave you a pass or other insider assistance at the gate.   Just an onlooker's observations but they seem to have gained some measure of prestige with their showsthis season in the castle and at the human chessboard.  Just a possible insider contact thought . . . if you don't have it worked out by Saturday.

Same here Merlin.  I have a Killian's Red promise to fulfill with your attendance and have not forgotten.  I anticipate being there at gate opening and would be pleased to show you around and hope to say hello to our friend Angus as well.  With the expected cooler weather we should see some of the best garb out and about.  Last weekend was great but a bit warm in chainmail.   The king's yeomen were a bit warm also but this weekend may be perfect weather.

I haven't thought to ask—or if I did, I've forgotten—what's a good time to arrive? Are there any pre-cannon festivities (a major item at my home faire)?

If you arrive about 10:00 you'll get some closer free parking.  I park in the VIP area.  It costs five bucks but worth it with a large Hummer II.  The pre-gate/cannon activites are there outside the gate but just inside the entry courtyard.  There is a stage and the gathering grows quickly after 10:00 with some back and forth action about the events of the day.  I think this weekend is the KING'S FEAST if you decide to get tickets.   If you're going to the King's Smoker, get those early because they sell out quickly.  The main players get the dane's quite pumped before the cannon so its a mini show in itself.   Music and musicians are everywhere so bring your hearing aides as you will not want to miss out on the period music.   I also play several instruments but will not be bringing any Saturday.  I may do that on Sunday. You'll hear the live bagpipes in the parking area as you arrive.

I had thought of that, but since it's so last minute I decided not to try and bother them about it this time.  I'm so glad they are becoming popular out there!  I've been invited to spend some time with them in camp whenever I can make it out there, and I'm looking forward to introducing Merlin and his Nimue to them, and Angus, as well, if he decides to wander with us at any point this weekend!  I hope several of us can meet up and form a group, for at least a while each day!  I plan to tag along/drag along with Merlin and Nim as much as they will have us, and I think it would be fun to swell our ranks with as many R/Fer's as we can gather!

We're going to try and set off from Edmond around 6am on Sat., giving us time to arrive and finish dressing in leisure... but I still haven't decided the most expedient route to travel, as of yet.  Should I take the norther route, and cut across hwy 16 after leaving the turnpike, or drop down to I-40 and then cut up? I'm wanting a quick trip, and would rather have as straight a shot as possible, so most likely the latter...

You'll like that.  Their gypsy encampment area seems a tad cramped on space but they are near enough to get to hear the music of the Jolly Rogers in the Pirate area all day and they are quite entertaining.   Last weekend the belly dancers were doing their thing in the front entry area and did a great job with their show at the masked ball.  They've added some to their drummers and that pumps a crowd.   They are a friendly group.

I'm glad I checked, or I would have arrived at gate way too early. It's a later start and earlier close than Scarby. Should be able to handle a full day Saturday, but will need to leave before closing cannon on Sunday...our workday Monday begins at 5:00 am.

Oh, they're wonderful, and I enjoyed spending time with them in Norman this year, when they were playing pirate with the crew of the SeaWolf (another wonderful group of Rennies that I wold love to be involved with, if only they were closer!)!  I can't wait to see them all again!  I'm excited to get to do some character work with them this year... and who knows, maybe Scally and I will even be invited to stay in the participants camping with them this weekend!  That would definitely be more comfy than sleeping in the van!  :D

@Merlin: There are some that arrive earlier than 10:00, no doubt.  It is a full day because almost each Saturday of faire,  there is an evening event available.   I checked the schedule and the King's Feaste is after closing,  beginning at 7:00 p.m and ending at 9:00 p.m. and there is most usually a really large fireworks show after the evening event.

I would like to publicly thank Archer for being such a splendid host to my Lady Nimue, myself, and our formerly Ren virgin traveling companion who, by the way, has been bitten and thoroughly infected with the Ren Bug. Archer gets extra points for being patient with the slow-walking old folks... Thank you, my friend. We'll see you again soon.

In addition to meeting Archer and his lovely bride on this first trip to Castleton, we also met the lovely Rani and her wonderful daughter, Scally (an absolute charmer, that one!) from the OKC area, Rapier Half-Wit and his entourage from the Houston area, and Capt Spleen from Colorado. We also bumped into Angus MacInnes a number of times...not saying it was because of my drinking or his... and Aniroaldawen and Jack Sparrow, who I believe are Scarbites as well.

All-in-all a marvelous and pleasurable experience.

Edit: I knew that there was someone else... I also visited with Replicant from Scarby.  I guess this was a minor Scarby Invasion...

Scall Wag and I had a wonderful time this weekend, and managed to spend time with most everyone who visited!  Spent part of Saturday with Merlin, Lady Nimue and Archer, while bumping into Angus and his lovely companion several times, and then had to run off and have lunch with Rapier Half Wit (from TRF) and two fo his amazing kids!  We had a great time wandering around with them all day, watched a couple of shows, had the youngest members Knighted, then attended a rousing pubsing with the Bedlam Bards, amongst many others!  It was a grand day, indeed!!!

(partial cross-posting from another thread)

Another amazing day, today, this time with Merlin, Nim and their friend, and Scally and I had a wonderful time with there, and were terribly sad to see them go... More awesome hugs, though, and they were so sweet... they insisted on buying us lunch!  Watched a few shows with them, and wandered a bit, but they had to leave early, although we managed to extract promises of a return engagement at another Faire, another time.  After that we wandered around trying to see everything, and played with as many cast members and entertainers as we could... then finally ran across Romanceteer Sean Daniels from CoRF, who presented us with his last roses, which he had saved and carried around all day just waiting for me and Scally.   At the end we spent some time drumming for our gypsy belly dancers during the closing show, then finally wandered out to the van, sad to be leaving, sore and exhausted... but glowing from two days of fun, Fairemily and FAIRE!!!

It was a wonderful weekend!  :D  Thank you all, to everyone who shared so many smiles, hugs and great times!  Can't wait to see you all again!

Oh!  Merlin, I meant to call you and make sure you made it home safely, but my phone finally gave up it's valiant effort to hold onto the last of it's charge, after not being plugged in since early Sat. morning... glad to see that you did, though!!!

Unfortunately,  I didn't get any pics this year due to unexpected magic box trauma.  The blame goes to gravity alone.

Spouse got some video she is editing as a hobby project but, I suspect that may take awhile at the current pace.  It will be her first effort with splice and editing to make a good one, worthy of posting.  Here is to hoping that some of you may be willing to share some of your favorite pics . . .

I don't know how one gets behind in their work on their days off, but somehow that seemed to happen this past weekend. As soon as I have enough time to resize and upload somewhere, I'll show the few shots we got over the weekend.  I had a fair amount of Killian's on Saturday... I had to be more cautious on Sunday since I had to drive that afternoon!

The RenDezvous is an annual gathering of many of the members of this board, and is held at a different festival each year. Last year, three weeks before I found this website, it was held at my home faire, Scarborough.  This year, it is being held at the Colorado Renaissance Festival near Larkspur on July 2nd & 3rd. There are a few threads on the topic floating about. You should think about going!
