Title: Potions 101
Post by: Queen Bonnie on May 15, 2008, 02:35:51 PM
Here is a place to post your special potions!

Here is one Lord A and I whipped up a few years ago.

Mead Evil Kilt Tilter
Mix
1 part Mead
1 part Scocth
Serve over crushed ice!
Garnish with a blue ribbon.
Enjoy!

I revived this thread early this AM- but it disappeared. Nargles again?
Post your potions and I hope they stay for all to enjoy!

This is my favorite potion, an old recipe which I learned from a St. Augustine bartender.
I shared this recipe with my old potion master, Lord A.
It has marvelous restorative qualities!

Dirty Bird Martini

3 parts Grey Goose Vodka
1 part very dry vermouth
Dash of olive brine
3 olives (small, so as to not take up too much room in the glass)
ice

Mix first three ingrediants and stir over ice. (contrary to popular belief and James Bond movies, you can't bruise vodka).
Poor straight up into cocktail glass.
Garnish with olives.

Good for what ails you!

That sounds wonderous indeed, Amras! You must make one for me some day!
I need restoration!

Lord A's Manhattan-
2 parts Makers Mark Bourbon
1 part  Martini and Rossi sweet vermouth.
Shake in a cocktail shaker with ice.
Serve in chilled martini glasses.
Garnish with a small cherry- or a twist of lemon peel.
Beware they are addictive and strong. All booze!

Wizards Delight:
Marinate fresh sliced strawberries in a generous amount of sweet Sherry and  triple sec! Serve over angel food cake- or alone in a bowl.  Over ice cream is good too.

Summer Bourbon Punch
Shaking up the drink in jars makes it frothy, but you can also mix all the ingredients together in a large pitcher and add ice.
INGREDIENTS
   1 cup sugar
   1 1/2 cups water
2 1/2 cups fresh lemon juice
2 cups Bourbon Whiskey (16 ounces)
   1 cup fresh orange juice
   Ice
2 lemons, cut into thick slices for garnish
DIRECTIONS
1.   In a medium saucepan, mix the sugar and water and boil over moderately high heat until the sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes. Let the syrup cool completely.
2.   In a very large jar with a tight-fitting lid, combine the syrup with the lemon juice, Bourbon and orange juice. Shake vigorously. Add ice and shake again.
3.   Fill tall glasses with ice. Strain the lemonade into the glasses, garnish with the lemon slices and serve.
MAKE AHEAD Except for the Bourbon, the ingredients can be mixed together and refrigerated overnight.

The Canadian Car Bomb

1 pint glass
1 shot glass
1 bottle/can Molson Canadian
Canadian Club Rye Whiskey
Real Maple Syrup

Take a tall pint glass and pour in the bottle (or can) Molson Canadian.  Fill the shot glass 3/4 with Canadian Club Rye Whiskey, fill the rest of the way with real maple syrup.

Prepare thyself.  Take two or three deep breaths.  Drop the full shot glass into the beer and chug.

Oh, so yummy.

An Irish Car Bomb can be had similarly, except you use Guiness, Irish whiskey and Bailey's Irish Cream

This pirate has improved a Cuban classic, now fit for taking along coastal raids and village plundering..

Mix your favorite mojito (Always use fresh mint!) skip the lime, and for the rum choose Pyrate Pistol. I also used sugar in the raw for the sugar, likely attributing to the sweetness. But my oh my, i only thought i liked mojito's before!

Nay I will not allow this noble thread to pass quietly into the night!
My most favorite potion will surly resurrect thee...or act as an effective embalmment!  ;)

This is a concoction developed over 25 years ago at a U.S. Army top secret laboratory located
somewhere in what was then West Germany... 8)

Ok me and a couple of my army buddies combined whatever we happened to have on hand one
boring Saturday while stationed in Germany.  :D

In a cocktail shaker mix:

1 shot Bacardi 151
1 shot Vodka
1 shot Gin
½  quart of Orange juice
Pour into a 16 oz glass with ice
Dribble in a liberal dash of grenadine (DO NOT STIR! THIS IS FOR EFFECT!)
One cherry.

Then you will have a VICIOUS VIRGIN!

Another fine potion from the ancient archives!

Typical Ryan's Rush in a shot glass:
Layer in the following pouring slowly in the sequence listed over the backside of a spoon to get a nice layered effect.
   FIRST:    1/3 oz. Kahlua
   SECOND: 1/3 oz. Bailey's cream
   THIRD:    1/3 oz. white rum

Now here is the manly version of Ryan's Rush. Depending on how you drink this manly version tells everyone what kind of man you really are! ~ i.e. the size of your gonads are inversely proportional to the size of your brains. Women can drink this version as well but usually don't as they have better sense!  ;)

Same ingredients as above poured in the same way but substitute the white rum with Bacardi 151 and light it and stand ready to suck it up with a straw.

~ Large brains and small gonads will wait for the flames to burn out before sucking down the hot mixture.

~ Large gonads and small brains will attempt to suck the drink down while it is still flaming.

BE WARNED! DRINK AT YOUR OWN RISK!
The second method of drinking this version if not done quickly and correctly has the potential to singe your eyebrows, hair, nasal cavity, etc.  :o

Title: Re: Potions 101

Here is one, but be advised, few give up loki recipes willingly.

Actually, this isn't true loki, but a bastardized version:

Orange Creamsicle Loki

2 pounds honey (hard, not liquid)
1 26 oz bottle Absolut vanilla
1 26 oz bottle Absolut mandarin

Gently heat the honey until it melts.  Gently, DO NOT BURN.
As you are heating the honey, combine the two bottles of vodka in a large container.
Add the liquified honey, stir.
Seal container, put away for minimum 3-4 weeks to allow to "mellow".
Enjoy at room temp, or over ice if the edge is still too much.

I have experienced that.  I just don't understand why not?  I could see if most Loki was for sale, but my experience is that it is mostly shared with friends.  I'd even be willing to sign a non-compete clause that I would not sell Loki, nor even come into their fair with their recipe.  Seems so out of character for Ren Folk.
? Am I wrong about that?

What is hard honey?
Title: Re: Potions 101
Post by: robert of armstrong on January 20, 2010, 04:40:37 AM
Loki is considered quite a treat;  it is kind of rare to come across nowadays and a person who has a nice tasting loki gets bragging rights when everyone at the tailgate enjoys it.  Usually, that loki took quite a bit of experimenting and some work and time (not really the case with the above recipe), and the person who put in that time doesn't want someone else taking the credit.  As a result, many guard their recipes.

Hard honey refers to honey that is harder in consistancy, usually sold in a tub or as a brick rather than the pourable kind or that sold in a squeezable container.  Those will work, but the loki doesn't come out quite the same for some reason.

I can't remember who told me about this recipe during RenDevous but they called it a
Southern Belle. It sounds a lot like the old Scarlet O'Hara.

1/2 oz. Schnapps, peach
1/2 oz. Southern Comfort
1/2 oz. Gold Rum
1 splash Cranberry Juice
Mixing Instructions
Shake ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into glass.

I am planning a batch of KILLER Melomel as soon as the fruit is ripe. I am hoping to have strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, peaches and plums to add to the Mix.. We have the honey! If all goes well TRF will be flavorful!

As for Loki...toooooo sweet,YUCK! I have several old recipes for different cordials.... all could become Loki or Revenge! May have to make Revenge this year... if I can remember the favoured one... Any old SCA(Society for Creative Alcoholism) people from TRF will remember that stuff! Cinnamon Apple was one!

May make the Melomel with half a batch sparkling!

Chocolate Cake

1/2 shot of Vodka
1/2 shot of frangelico
slice of lemon
sugar

coat the slice of lemon in sugar, and pour the liquor in the shot glass. Lick the sugar off the lemon, but don't swallow yet. Take the shot, swallow, and then bite the lemon. It's supposed to taste like chocolate cake.

I myself haven't gotten it quite right just yet, but I'm willing to do the work necessary   ;D however, I have heard of this from several friends, and they say it's the most bizarre thing in the world.

I came across a new one that sounded really interesting.

I was watching a rerun of Anthony Bourdain today, and he was in Uruguay. A local was making a drink called Siete y Tres (Seven and Three). It's seven parts red wine and three parts coca cola. I'm drinking it now and it's....interesting. I can't quite decide if I like it or not. Sometimes it tastes like red wine, and sometimes like coca cola. I used a cabernet sauvignon, but it would be interesting to find out what different reds do to the flavor

I have not had a chance to make my melomel this year...things have been too hecktic... seems the standard.
I love blended potions... one I redid to suite  was the Grasshopper

I use

Mint Choc ice cream(in place of the cream)2-2 1/2 scoops
1 oz cream de menthe
1 oz cream de cacoa
1/2 oz good vodka
handful of ice

blend well this serves 2 easily!  I call it a spotted Grasshopper

Another is Berry ice

4oz vodka
bag of froz berry mix(good sized bag)
ice
ginger ale

blend ice, vodka and berrys add ginger ale until it is a nice mushy slushy! serves 3-4

I decided we will have dark rum and Jamaican ginger beer cocktails. The ginger beer is infused with orange nectar.
