Title: Reenactment photo gallery
Post by: groomporter on October 26, 2008, 09:10:27 AM
It's not Renfaire, but I thought it might be fun to share a link to a gallery of photos from reenactors from various eras. There's everything from Ancient Rome to WWII

Cool site! As chance would have it, one of my students is really into the civil war reenactment stuff. I shot the skirmish they had last Sunday. It was actually pretty cool too. I only have one picture posted so far but hope to get more online later tonight...

Thanks for this thread. I'd love to become involved in other areas of reenactment.  I had no idea how many areas of interest there were!

Any idea where the Convention will be this year.

Groomporter, about a year ago I was part of a re-enactment. On the 'battlefield' a Confederate soldier fell. It was hot and I watched as he crawled over to a tree where there was shade.
When the battle was over, all the soldiers lined up for photos.
Except one.
Someone was sent out to the battlefield to wake him up!

Too bad I didn't have a camera for that!

Re-enactments are fun but the Civil War ones are grueling to work.
Faire is so much easier.

See, I'd love to attend a Civil War renenactment. Okay, have to admit I love the clothes...but I like the era and I love to dance I love the chivalry of southern men. Thing is, if it's a war renenactment, I'm not sure where I'd fit in. Like Scarlette O'Hara, I'm not cut out to be nursing sick men. Surely there's more fun to be had than that?

Love the fourties. How fun would that be to be a singer ...*humming "Don't sit under the apple tree".*

I confess to being a clothes horse. The real problem is that the Nazis had so many really snazzy looking uniforms. Like the black panzer unit ones

OHH!! Maybe I could be a spy for the French underground!

Yeah the German WWII reenactors have problem, they can't just go to a bar or restaurant after an event without either changing clothes, or making special arrangements, whereas the Yanks and the Brits can show up in uniform with no problem. The running joke our first time at Reenactor Fest was "ya know , those Nazi's are pretty nice guys..."

Interesting site, especially the Civil War photos. I'd love to see the annual reenactment at Gettysburg in July. Went for the first time last year in the fall, and there were small pockets of reenactors scattered about. The town itself is a bit touristy, but being on the battlefield was pretty intense. You can really feel the history there, and I totally understand why it has a reputation for being haunted.

I'm an organizer for a "Victorian" (actually anywhere from 1830's to 1920's) living history event in a local cemetery (http://www.geocities.com/oakdalevictorianday) every other year. And by organizer, I mean I'm half of the planning committee, as well as the writer for the actor's monologues, and the director for the actors.
Here's some pics of 2007's event:

Dustin, I love the pictures and it proves that the women were not just hoop-wearing, fan-fluttering ladies,

Not exactly a 're-enactment' but my instructor was telling us she went to the Titanic exhibit.
Upon entrance, each received a replica boarding pass of an actual passenger.
They would see the various aspects of the Titanic and at the very end, you found out whether you survived or died.
That has to be an unsettling feeling, to hold a boarding pass of someone who actually was there.

As far as Gettysburg, this article says that the entire town became the battlefield. Bodies were left awaiting burial on the streets of the town and the women would saturate handkerchiefs with peppermint and vanilla to cover the stench of death.
To this day, they said you can smell the peppermint-vanilla in the air.

Regardless, the site here makes for good campfire stories late at night.

http://www.prairieghosts.com/gettysburg.html

Now back to the subject at hand....Does anyone know if during the re-enactments if you become or take the name of an actual soldier that fought the battle?

Dustin, I'm not sure if I'm way off base, but your pics make me think of Spoon River Anthology. Is that what your group does? Write monologues for those in the graves they stand by?

I worked with a theatrical writers group some years back in NYC anbd we wrote and produced something similar. it was a haunting experience.

Yep, that sounds about right. We have tours through the cemetery, and actors talk about their characters' lives. See my post in the Midwest section (http://www.renaissancefestival.com/forums/index.php?topic=4301.0) for more details.

In my part of Minnesota here in the Southeast corner is very big into the Civil War period. Another period I love doing garb for.

Those who are havily involved in Reenactments are passionate about their clothing looking so precise, even down to the handstitching, cooking utensils, tenting, etc. This is another version of the SCA, but bigger!!! For many, it's a lifestyle!!!

This past summer, I attended two small town festivals wearing my 1860's Day dress I made from a lovely Calico. The bodice top had the Pagoda sleeves with the false sleeves underneath. Even the Civil War reenactors asked me where did I get my dress. Elizabeth was dressed in the period as well.

Thanks for this link. I'm a HUGE fan of this style pf clothing and the "Goth" scene. It's now in my favorites to visit often to admire. I wish Americans did this as it looks like this is in Europe.

Yeah I remember when the Goth scene started with some of the Edwardian and Victorian influences it had but with tattered and torn shirts and hose and I thought "I know how do this -right-" -and go for the elegant look like in these pics. Always been a bit of a Victorian wannabe.

Very cool link, Groomporter!!

Next year's theme for Costume Con 27 in Baltimore is Villians, Vixens, adn Vampires. Ricky and Karen Dick are the Con hosts. Thye're very big into the Goth look and originators of the Costume Con convention..

I will be making an 18th Century ensemble. I will be a Vampire attending the Venice Carnivale in what I am going to make for the Social Night. Completeed with 18th Century stays, hip hoops, etc. A decorated/plimed tricorn atop my white wig with my makeup done very similar in the photos. Should be a fright!!!

Some friends of mine who live in Chicago are part of the Chicago Costumer's Guild went this year for the Saturday and Sunday panels at Re Enactor fest,  as well as to check out the Dealer's Room.  Several of their fiends were giving pabnel discussions.

It has been recommended to me that I should attend next year. Taking the train from Winona to Chicago may not be a bad idea. I like  recreating the 18th Century for Clothing after the Elizabethan/Tudor periods. I have several 18th Century ensemles in the works.

Galena, IL is the home of Ulysses S. Grant and also the home of 9 Civil War generals, so there are always at least 2 or 3 weekends in the summer where there is a reenactment taking place.  For a while, our younger son was a member of the 39 Leadmine Regiment.  I used to go out to visit his camp.  With the 100+ degree weather and all of them wearing wool, it was stifling for them.  They always made sure to drink plenty of water, but there were always some unexpected "deaths" during a battle, which really was some people passing out due to the heat.

My ex-husband (a.ka. the @#$% dirtbag) used to portray Nathan Bedford Forrest at the Battle of Sacramento!!!....(Un)fortunately, his luck has changed, and he no longer has a truck, trailer OR horse...too bad!    We were married in a Civil War ceremony at an event in Southern Illinois, too....  I have many friends who renew their vows in such ceremonies... I still sew many Civil War clothes for people in our unit, but really really love sewing English and Italian 16th century clothing instead.

Your dress in beautiful in your picture..  :)

We entered a float in the local St. Patrick's Day parade this weekend to promote "Victorian Day", a living history event at a local Victorian garden cemetery. I walked in Victorian-ish garb, and had three reenactor-types riding the float - 2 Civil War, and 1 pre-Civil War.

The tombstones on the float have last names of Irish families that are buried at Oakdale, plus some Irish names from the float crew's families.
