... to see at Scarborough?
We are beginning our rehearsals this weekend, so I thought I would ask.
If you have any ideas, let me know and I'll suggest it to the right people.
No promises, but it gives you all an 'In' at the Faire.
Thanks, your majesty!
History, Manners and Customs lecture, Liam Hunter Memerial Archery Tournament, Sunday church services in the Rose Garden, Scottish Court at the maypole, pretty much does it. Well marching in the parade and royal guard duty are givens.
The cast always does great lane play, Chess match is always good I really enjoy the fact that so many different weapons are used in the chess match. The Wresting was fun last year wouldn't mind see that return.
The return of the occupied Scots cottage? Haggis Hunting? ;D
The truth is that cast has never failed to deliver and I'm sure we are in for many pleasent hours of interaction and more an a few surprises.
In KC last year they had a history tour which was quite good. It introduced one to the period and some of the talent.
-I really enjoyed the 'peek behind the scenes' at the Memorial Day weekend Chess Match last year. A repeat of that would be great.
-A continuation of the History lectures. I tell everyone I know who might visit Scarby about them. They really help to bring the period alive.
-I realize that the 500th anniversary of the coronation was a one-time thing. However, some sort of big Kings party once a season would be lots of fun. (BTW, is a video of that ceremony going to be made available to purchase? I'd love to have a copy)
I really don't have much to offer I'm afraid as I feel you all already do a grand job. There's no better faire I've attended IMO for cast interaction. I have so many little treasured moments (especially involving my kids) that make me smile on a regular basis.
I would really like for the Death March Grande Parade to go back the way it went 2 years ago. Marching up the "hill" while playing a drum was not fun last year. Also, the mud pit staging area for parade was not much fun last year either with all the rain...hopefully the powers-that-be will work their weather spells a little better this year ;)
Other than that, I wouldn't change a thing, except maybe more cast/patron interaction ;D
Actually, I totally agree with what Cowgrrl just posted :)
I liked the old parade route too.
I would like to see the "No Smoking" signs back at the shows please.
I'm gonna second (third/fourth) the old parade route and Queen B's suggestion that non-smoking be enforced at the shows. I would second everything that SirRichardBear mentioned.
But, to answer your question Majesty, Scarby is such a great, wonderful and magical escape. It's hard to suggest changes. Interaction with cast and crew are the highlights for myself and folks that I bring to the Faire. The more interaction, the better.
I worry a bit, from year to year about some of our favorite acts. Hey Nunnie Nunnie being gone part of last year, the Rogues gone this year...will the mud show ever return. But, each year is full of wonderful new surprises (Wine and Alchemy were great last year).
I've been to many, many faires and Scarby is by far the best, friendliest and most magical of them all. I look forward to see you once again, Majesty, as do my grandkids and their moms and dads, my friends and relatives. And to see all of the characters (cast, crew, playtrons, faire friends and show folke) that make up this grand event, what a colorful show.
Break a leg sir, and thanks for asking....see you in a few weeks.
These are not really cast related but I have to agree that the parade route was a lot better before. Not just as a death-marcher either. The parade ending by the chess board worked a lot better than trying to dump a parade full of people at FoF booth. The parade had a nice ending point, now it just kinds falls apart at the coin smasher.
The no smoking signs back at the shows would be a welcome sight (I still see one or two).
I too would love to see the Scots cottage back (again it may not be in your jurisdiction - even as king)
For the cast? You have such a great group I don't really know what else you could do. That's not much though is it? :P
Scarby is almost perfect for me. The only thing that I would love to see is the parking lot problem to be addressed. Rain days are horrible. The dreaded Scarby mud that seems to grow and expand on your boots and cars. Then adding wood shavings really doesn't work. I've seen alot of vehicles stuck and people trying to in vain to find a semi-solid path from the parking rows to the entrance.
The cast and the shows are great. I do aggree Hey Nunnie Nunnie needs to be there for the duration.
That's my 2 shillings.
One of my "large mammal" friends wanted me to say koodos to having more benches and such around. There are times when his back is ready to give out and he just wants a place to sit for a momment that is NOT at a stage. He wants more seating especially near the food areas. During lunch rush you never can find a good place to sit.

Well this wont' fix the parking lot issue but word on the street is that the grounds now have brick gutters to help channel the water off of the faire grounds... so hopefully no more big lakes and such.
More places to sit would be helpful. Even more helpful if they were in shade.
The Hightower stage needs more seating. More of the cement benches up on the rise would be good. I find myself standing more that sitting there.
Over near the Pasta Palace/German food could use a few benches. We end up seated on the planters quite often after parade. We could go around to the nearby pub, but that has a show on going that I am not watching. I am eating and talking with friends.
Seating near the court dances/kid whacking. Some benches or more picnic tables around the edge would be nice. There are a couple of tables usually on the north side road. A couple more would be good. Some benches on the south side and behind the gazebo would be great.
I would like to see the parade route go back to what it was a couple of years ago. Dumping the entire parade at the coin smasher didn't work well at all. Even ending the parade at the Cat-N-Fiddle would have been better than that.
As for Preview weekend, I would like to see the cast tell the audience a little about their characters, beyond Hello I'm so&so, Lord Something or other. I think it would make the court and its hangers on less bewildering to people who don't know much about 1535 beyond Henry and Anne Boleyn. A little in the same way that the History & Manners lectures makes the era come alive.
Dona has an excellent suggestion! I even have a friend on cast and continually have to ask him, "You're WHO? And you do WHAT?"
That could even be taken a wee bit further into the pre-cannon opening - when asking one of the cast members something, elaborate a bit on who they are, such as "Soandso, the whoseywhatsit of wherever, brother/nephew/wife/daughter etc, of someone else...tell us yadda-yadda-yadda". I think you do some of that already, so just expanding it a wee bit to add depth would be outstanding.

Scarby has a history and manners lecture? Can you tell me more?
Yes been doing them for a couple of season. Last year the lectures were at 11:30 at the Hightower Square they were even listed on the program which was a great help. Here is a copy of the schedule from last season.

I can't say enough good things about the lectures or the lecturers each one is very knowledgeable (and as one would expect from SAPA members) very entertaining.
Think it is time to open up a topic and start taking suggestions for this season?

Umm, that's what THIS topic is meant to do! :D
I was think a bit more specific just for topics for the History, Customs, and Manners. Your Majesty must look to the big picture a per-knight needs to look at the small picture.
Richardbear
You are welcome to start a topic on HCM (History, Customs and Manners) lectures; however since we are still in the middle of workshops no decisions about the 1130 show at Hightower Stage will be made for a few more weeks. As we did last year we will take requests and announce the topics each week to the board here. Thank you so much for your continued support and interest in this show. Scarborough takes pride in our ability to educate a willing and interested audience about our period.
What else, beyond HCM, would you like to see at the festival?
Thanks

... or you could start another thread ::)
They had one last year, they'll probably start one up soon for 2010.
That was the idea was just wondering if it was too early to start that topic or not.

I also wouldn't mind seeing more shade awnings at the rebuilt Dirty Duck Tavern....pie in the sky wish.... ;)
The whole Shade issue is better than it was 10 years ago, but there never seems to be enough. I have friends that refused to go back to scarby because 1) no place to sit 2) No place to get any shade on our texas heat days. They called the large meadow ( can't remember the name) where Don Juan and migel are 'radiation field' because they nearly passed out walking from one end to the other due to the heat.

The Crown Meadow is also jokingly referred to as "The Crown Grill." :P
Here's another vote for more seating. I attend with someone who is physically challenged and I'm sure there are others who need to rest during a long day at faire. Scarby is a magical place and we are really looking forward to visiting again this seaon.
More in the nature of a personal request. If the King as a minute or two in his busy schedule one sunday afternoon to swing by the archery tournament and wish all our shooters the best.

It is always my intention to stop by, but that pesky schedule always gets in my way >:(
I may have to play hookey from one of my assigned duties to get by this year!
I think the King with all his riches should buy everyone a mead on opening day!!!! ;D

well.. the preview event IS on Easter Sunday so there's a good chance the Easter Bunny will be in attendance. does this mean he'll have free mead for all us FoFs? ;)

And if we have another freak snow storm - Santa might be there too!
What I'd like to see is the Pirate Weekend earlier in the season. Those wool coats are not fun when it's 95 degrees out, and I personally don't do heat well anymore. (The evil twin got new garb since last year and is lurking about looking to "borrow" my FoF pass. M'Lord has also decided that pirate is going to be his usual persona this year.)
Oh, bring on the snow! That was one of the most fun weekends I've had at Scarby!

Judging by the directions of the arrows on the new map on the new website:

Looks like they reversed the direction of the parade back to the way it used to be, starting by the elephants, and ending by the now-mudless-mudpit... WoOHoO!

Huzzah! That's 2 confirmations, the first being the schedule showing "Post-parade Proclamation" at the Chess Field/Carillon @1:20.

Amen, and why not make it opening weekend. Since kids get in free, it'd be great. My grandkids love pirate weekend so they would get to see lots of pirates! And, the weather is always cooler and more appropriate for those wool coats, etc. Wonder what pirates wore back in the day when it got hot in the Caribbean? Pirate speedo!??

I've seen Santa Claus at the faire!!!
I have also seen Santa at Scarby. I asked him again for my Christmas peasant! LOL!

Yes, the Parade will be going back to the start at FoF near the Elephants and finish at the Chess Board. Line the watchers up correctly!!!
