Title: Steampunk Invasion of Scarby?
Post by: cowgrrl on April 02, 2010, 06:02:44 PM
Anybody looking at having a Steampunk Invasion of Scarby one weekend?  I need to finalize my Steamy stuff & if I know there's going to be a weekend at Scarby I can plan my purchases.  Thanks!

I must be way behind the times, but what the heck is a ""steampunk""? A Renaissance era hot food item??

Victorian age if technology was powered by steam and not electricity.
Think league of extraordinary gentlemen, Back to the future 3, or warehouse 13 cell phones and guns.

There is a thread in the backstage forum.

edited cause spell check can't fix bad grammar.

Or a real simple  definition "Those people with goggles and top hats."

I am confused.  Why would people wear Victorian costumes to a Renaissance Faire?  Are there not Steampunk conventions or such?

It seems like wearing goggles and top hats and similar clothing kind of defeats the purpose of a Renaissance faire.

Please enlighten.

Thanks!

I suppose it could be because faire is a venue for playing dress up.  Here at TRF we have 'themed weekends'  which include wearing togas, barbarian stuff, etc., which aren't really HA themes.  We also have people show up at faire in Star Wars, LOTR outfits and such.

I look at it this way.... even though faire is set in a certain period... I enjoy seeing the creativity that people express in their costuming.

Plus, it could be a matter of cost.  I personally would have to skip a faire to go to a con.  Faire wins hands down  ;D and if I feel like doing something different, so be it.

That makes sense, thank you.  I guess it also may depend on what part of the country you are from.  With the exception of the Bristol Costume Contest last year, most people do dress in Ren wear, though most, mine included, are not H/A.  There are some Vikings, and of course, I'm still trying to figure out Robin Hood & the Sheriff battling it out in Queen Elizabeth's time, but our theme weekends are more like pirates, Italian Renaissance, etc.

While I agree that people can and should wear what they want at any faire they attend, and I'd never say a word, I guess I am more of a traditionalist.  When I go to a faire, I like to see Ren garb, it makes it more realistic and fun to me.  But that is just my personal preference, and not a reflection on what anyone chooses to wear.

You're most welcome.  :)  Glad my thoughts helped.

I think faires are kinda open in comparison to a SCA event as well.  I couldn't see myself going to a SCA event in something out of the period(s) the event calls for....  While I have not been to a SCA event, it seems more HA driven.  Ya know what I mean?

I don't think I will have my outfit together in time for a SP event at Scarby.  I will have to save it for TRF.

H.G. Wells' Time Machine was set in the Victorian era, so if one were to have said time machine and travel back to the 16th century, it would be HA  ;D
(Although I would prefer a TARDIS, myself ;) )

i have also found that different faires are also tollerent of diffrent things.   When we went to So Cal pleasure faire they didn't know what to make of my husbands pirate garb. To be honest I didn't see half the fantacy, barbarian, or even pirates I normally would expect at say scarby.  All the garbed people seemed to be either cast or performers.

The way I see it if we can have a day of wrong why can't we have a steampunk invasion where they are "time travelers" back to the time.  I prefer the philosphy "Are you doing anything to kill my fun? Am I doing anything to kill your fun? No? Then by all means have fun."

Don't have any steampunk stuff but, maybe next year.   ;D

Like you I am not going to knock what anyone wears, I would prefer to see Ren garb at a Ren faire.

We had two ladies come to BARF in Steam Punk this year. They looked very good, I will post a pic If I have one. They did a very nice job with it and were not that out of place. actually had a bit of a pirate look to them as well. But then again I will also mention that BARF is one that will have men dress up in a full out fuzzy chicken suit and wizard hat and we still accept him! We just say a spell went awry  ;)
