It's been a while since I was excited about a new movie. This one looks to have promise.
Indeed. ;D
We've been anticipating this release for some time. Until then enjoy another trailer - Robin Hood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMcDeNo6KUs)
OK Looks good except a few things
Landing Barges? This isn't D-Day in reverse
Merrian riding into battle as if she were Joan of Arc didn't happen
Merrian pulling back a longbow? It takes a trained archery to do that with a long bow. Modern men like most all of us who even shoot bows cannot shoot a real long bow as it takes years of training, very broad shoulders and lots of strength.
Ridley Scott may be a good movie maker but his attention to Historical Detail and Facts sometimes take away the believablidy in a historical story. He did it in Kingdom of Heaven and in Gladiator as well, but these three things? Com'on Ridley.
I will enjoy the entertainment aspect of this movie, but I am going to be grumbling hard about details.
I agree and don't expect historical accuracies, only good entertainment value as Ridley can provide.
Its going to be good!

OK, I saw the bit with the "Landing Craft" and I had to LOL! :o ::)
If they had only just used "Long Boats" it would have been all good... ;)
But no, they had to go and use something that looks just like the actual landing craft that they used on D-Day but power by oars...::)
But it still looks like it's going to be a great movie for all it's faults! ;D
This Robin should go over well with fans, says John Paul Davis of Birmingham, England, who argues in a new book, Robin Hood: The Unknown Templar, that Robin Hood may have been a former member of the Knights Templar (which among other things operated as the earliest bankers of Christian Europe). One of the earliest stories about him is that he robbed a corrupt abbot to lend the money to a needy knight.
Any film with Russell Crowe has promise!!!
A dear friend of mine who knows Russell and sent me photos of him with her taken at the Walk of Fame ceremony when ERussell's Star ws unvieled, went to a Special Invitation only screening in LA with a Q&A afterwards with Ridley Scott last week. She says 'Robin Hood' is FANTASTIC !! I spoke with her on Saturday to thank her for the pictures of Russell she had sent me and she told me about the Special Screening of the film.
My friend thought of me when she saw the costumes because she had encouraged me to try to get on that film as a sewer, but I was rejected despite the kind words from Oscar winner, Janty Yates.

This is exactly why I don't want to see the movie. I know my husband is going to drag me kicking and screaming, though. At least the visuals look nice.
This is one of the reasons I try to pay as little attention as possible to the public/private lives of actors, just so I don't develop a "picture" of them that I can't let go of when I see them as a character in a movie. If I am going to attain that "willing suspension of disbelief" that a truly entertaining movie requires, then I have to believe the character, and not the actor as the character.
It does look to be quite entertaining... :D I've been thinking it might be time to introduce my daughter to the tales of Robin Hood, Ivanhoe and King Arthur, and this might just pique her curiosity enough to start on the books.
Mark Addy as Friar Tuck ;D Goin to see it tonight.
The Earl and I went to a Saturday evening showing to a packed house! LOVED IT!!!
This film does not disappoint! Entertaining all the way!!!
I will be seeing this film numerous times before it ends its run!!!
I finally saw "Robin Hood" last weekend. I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The castle sieges were amazing, as were the flights of arrows going into the surf of the English Channel. AWESOME! Russell Crowe did a lot better job than I expected. I'll be getting this on dvd. I'll try to ignore the Higgins landing craft the next time I see it. Didn't the orcs in "The 2 Towers" have similar landing craft to invade Osgiliath though?
I too was surprised, by the landing craft, now I just may do some research, and I don't think it would've been all that impossible or impracticle to have those ships even before using them for war, I mean if you need to move carts and horses across water, this would've been the way, and it was near the end of the Middle Ages, almost beginning of the Renaissance when all this supposedly happened. So I think there were some pretty smart people back then designing these ships. And the reason we don't see examples of them as wreckage, is they were probably burnt up, or the wood scrapped to be used to build something else. I got so wrapped up in the film, I lost track of the time. And I was waiting for all the parts where they start the court intrigue and ambushes in the forest on the King's men, just like all the other films and the books, and T.V. shows, but I just hope they make several sequels based on the Robin Hood legends all the way to his death. And we'll have to deal with a little suspension of disbelief. Though not historically correct, this movie was extremely entertaining.
This is definitely on my "need to see it!" list.
Any word as to when it comes out in DVD??? That one as well as 'ECLIPSE'.
I have quite the Russell Crowe library.
September 23
Can't wait!!!
Saw it on the rack at Mall Wart. Just under $20. Blu ray about $10 higher.
Well folks I rented this the other night and I have to admit I was a bit underwhelmed. O.K. I admit that the H.C. aspect was something that I did not look for and never do, but Robin Longstride, give me a break, at least if your not going to be H.A. at least stick to the legend. I think Ridley took a little to much poetic licsence in this one. I've seen it and doubt I would add it to my collection.
If I can get it cheap, liek $5 and Wal-Mart does sell them that cheap after a couple years then I'll buy it. But, all in all a good film to watch once or twice, but not over and over.
I will watch this one over and over, like I do 'KING ARTHUR' with Clive Owen.
The "story behind the legend" angle always has fascinated me.
So what if Ridley Scott took a little license with this film. It added to the backdrop, which made the film work. This was the film I tried to get on as a sewer of some of the costumes, but was rejected. That in part because I did not do enough Theater or small film work.
I really enjoyed it and could watch it again.
Personally I was skeptical at first, but after watching it and how it came about I loved it. It is also the first time I believe the Magna Carta was even referenced in. I liked the origins of the characters from that perspective. That's what is different from all the other ones ever made. Ridley Scott is great at what he does and of couse some hollywood needs to be introduced. This is just like the Roman King Arthur movie which came out some years back. It puts some different perspective on things which may or may not be true. Also, if people liked Kingdom of Heaven, which I did, that also had many things which were not accurate as well, but still gave a feel in different directions. many remakes have to "shake things up" as it were. All in all, I have it in my collection and have watched it twice so far. Very good movie in way of presentation.
Lord Clisto, Duke of York
Knight of the Holy Blade of York
I agree with all the non-historical features, and Robin Hood was a good film. But, it ended too abruptly, I was looking for the legends of old when they would ambush people in the woods, and that wasn't found in this film. I'm waiting on a sequel. Kingdom of Heaven and King Arthur with Clive Owen, I will have to say are better films than Robin Hood.
There is talk of a sequel where this all will go into that. This was just suppose to be the building block for what we all know of Robinhood, which makes a lot of sense. i just hope it happens, which one never knows with hollywood. But I do agree that KOH and the New Arthur are better. Even the foreign film "Arn the knight Templar" which was out 3 years ago was as good as KOH.
There was a Robin Hood made with Uma Thurman as maid marian and the leading man I couldn't remember because he wasnt' a big name, and I don't think made any more movies, but that film was quite true to the old legend and referenced alot of the laws going on at that time and who and what was conquering the English. So in all evry Robin Hood film brings some more excitement albeit may not by historically accurate at times, it's still pretty cool.
The name of the leading man was Patrick Bergen. It was a made for TV movie and was passable.
Thank you, Now I'll know when I go to purchase a copy. I found it very passable. One of my favorite scenes was Friar Tuck trying to pass off chicken bones as saint's bones, which was quite common then.
Ok. I finally watched it, the director's cut. I was expecting it to be painfully bad. But other than 3 uh-oh moments, it was actually pretty good. I liked the ship with sweeps going up to the palace docks in London.
I too bought the Director's cut of 'Robin Hood'. It's a much better film with scenes that were cut from the Theatrical version. There's more "meat" to the story.
I may be getting a little off track but it is nearly winter now & the boards are not quite as active.
Morgan Dreadlocke mentioned Robin Hood's price on blue ray. Is anyone buying blue ray movies? They are not selling very well in Oklahoma. Their sections at stores & rental places are really small. I figure that people have large collections of regular dvd's & don't want to spend scads more money replacing what they have & buying expensive machines. I don't know of any friends or relatives who have blue ray players. I wonder if it will go the way of the beta max tapes from the early 80's.
Were I a betting man I would say yeah they are probably doomed. DVD is cheaper and the clarity I dont believe is that much better. IMHO.
I think its a toss up. My tech loving husband and brother in law both bought blue-rays when the version came out with bugs fixed. So all our newest movies are in blue ray. And I notice a lot more detail.
I don't have an HDTV so blue ray would be wasted on me. When my current TV dies, I will probably upgrade but in the mean time, I'm doing just fine with DVDs.
I just watched it this weekend. I thought it was a great movie, granted they took some licence with some stuff but it was still a good take on the legend.
And I thought I heard one of the vocalists from Great Big Sea in it. Did I hear right?
We finally got a chance to watch this last week. Rather surprised at the variations on the legends that we were used to, but thought it was a pretty good film.
