My sister works as a bus driver and a janitor . Supposedly at one of the schools on FRiday that she works for there was a big Mercury spill. They sent 50 kids to the hospital and all the kids had to throw out their clothes they had on and their book bags.
anyway, i still do not have all the story, but they sent two janitors into the room where the spill was to wipe things up. ( why they did not call hazzard control or the fire department i do not know ) . Anyway one of the janitors was my sister.
She told my parents about it over the weekend and said the fumes and vapors were so strong in the room she could bearly breathe. My dad did not think my sister looked good when he saw her on saturday and wanted her to go to the ER but she did not.
To make a long story short, cause details are still coming in... my sister was standing talking to someone at work today when the person told her ( my sister ) that my sister's eyes were turning yellow. and then my sister passed out cold.
instead of calling for an ambulance, they drove my sister home to her house, where someone called her fiance, and he called my parents.
My sister's fiance was going to take her to her family doctor. My parents were trying to tell her to go right to the hospital.
So please keep her in your prayers. My sister has been thru enough these last few years. she went thru a nasty divorce. had her house burn down, she was in a nasty bus accident, went thru a fight with breast cancer, and now this .
Please keep her in your prayers. she is the sweetest , kindest person who would ever meet, she does not deserve any of this.
I will keep her in my prayers. I hope everything turns out alright for her.
WOW I am so sorry to hear about your sister, my prayers are being said for her and your family. I sending you strength and hugs, when someone cares as much as you do, it can take a lot out of you. My thoughts are with you.
Thanks for the prayers. Yes, i was very upset earlier tonight and angry too at the people at her work who ordered her to go into the room that was contaminated. My sister said she would have never gone in their if she had known it was the room that the Mercury spill had been in.
My sister is now in the hospital. The doctors were running tests on her, but they think her heart and lungs have been affected. She is a bad state right now. she is having a hard time breathing and they have her hooked up to heart monitors.
The other big concern is she has no feeling in either of her legs.
My parents are beside themselves with worry.
I worry about them. they are both in their 80's .
Please keep them and my sister in your prayers.
I'm so sorry to hear this! My thoughts are with your sister, you, and your family. I sincerely hope she is able to recover. Please keep us updated on how she is doing.
What kind of school would be storing mercury?!? My hopes for a full recovery are with your sister...

Latest update: Thursday afternoon
The doctors are trying to figure out how to treat my sister. They know she has deffinitely had chemical exposure but how much has yet to be determined. according to another family member who has been at the hospital this morning they have been drawing blood like crazy from my sister.
She still can not feel her legs and the doctors are planning to do a spinal tap on her.
that is what has me scared the most, is the fact she can not feel her legs.
my parents were going up to the hospital, so hopefully i will have more info later.
right now i am ready to strangle the boss that my sister works for who let my sister go into that room. my sister was not aware, or informed of the mercury spill until after she had went into the room, otherwise she would have never had even entered the building. Personaly i think she needs to hire a good lawyer, but first we nedd to pray that she pulls thur and that she gets use of her legs back.

IRISH, It was in Pleasant Valley/ poughkeepsie area of New york. I'm not sure which school it was, but it was the Arlington school district.
Amy, I'm so sorry to hear about this. Your sister and her/your family will definitely be in my thoughts.
I just spoke with Amy and she asked me to post this because she is just too upset right now.
Not much good has changed for Amy's sister. Right now the doctors can't agree on what is going on. They won't even admit that its mercury that is causing the problems. The family doctor is saying it could be a toxic buildup of meds that she has been on but the neurologist says it IS the mercury. Biggest problem is the meds they can give her could make it worse if they are not right about what it is and they still don't know. As of now she has not feeling in her feet or right leg and her togue is totally numb. The neurologist is concerned about the paralysis spreading so is trying to do something about it but can't get a clear path as to the issue. Right now Amy is beside herself and they are very concerned for her sister. That is about all I have right now. If I get more I'll post it but please keep up the prayers. She'll need them.
Amy you, your sister and the rest of your family are in my prayers!
Praying now...
Hope all goes well, Amy.
I did find the story online.
Our prayers go with you and your family. Please keep us updated on your sister.
Amy, we're keeping your family in our prayers.
prayers on the way for your sister and you and your family.
Thankyou everyone so much. This is so difficult for all of my family to swallow right now. my sister has been thru enough these past few years. Bitter divorce, her house burning to the ground, a brush with breast cancer, and now this. she does not derve this. Sue is the type of person who would do anything for anyone, even a complete stranger.
I think i could accept the fact if she was in the hospital with some illnessd or something, but to know she is in the hospital and she may not make it because of some damn ( excuse my language ) weed kicker's complete negligence is just not acceptable.
some one asked on here what the scholl was doing with mercury in the first place. Ends iup the incident was at the middle school. One of the students brought the mercury into school in a container to show off to her friends..Her father had given it to her. What parent in their right mind gives a kid Mercury to take to school ?
and then the jerk of a superintendent, 2 hours after the spill goes and says we cleaned the spill up, evrything is safe. Bull------ !! tell that to my sister who was hit by the vapors still there.
and then the next day the same superintendent goes and says that they found out the spill was more widspread then they were originally informed.
and then i did some reseraching on my own on the internet and found the haz mat report and haz mat had not even tested the air quality of the building yet, and they had declared it unsafe to enter the building. So why in the hell, did they send my sister into that building.she was not told that the building and room that she enterd was the site of the spill . she did not know about the spill, until after she had entered the room, and was overcome by the vapors. Can you say cover up. or can you smell something fishy here.
as of last night my sister had no feeling in either of her feet, her right leg, and she could barely talk. the neurologist said the paralysis could spread.
my parents were headed to the hospital again this afternoon. they were going to try to get ameeting with the neurologist and find out what can be done to keep the pralysis some spreading and killing my sister. Cause unfortunately it only takes a small amount of mercury in vapor form to be inhaled and be lethal. mercury hits and attacks the central nervous system and your kidneys big time.
so please, please pray. if anything happen to my sister, i am afraid my mom would not make it. we would end up losing my mom too, cause she she is very close to her daughters. as it is my parenst are both in their 80's, my mom has health problems of her own and she does not nedd this right now.
PLEASE CONTINUE TO PRAY. tHANKYOU !
Amy, your language needs no excusing. It seems rather tame under the circumstances.
I've only been a member of this cyber-community for a short time, but in that time I've noticed an amazing bond among the membership. We all offer our support and best hopes for you and your family, and some so inclined, their prayers. Prior to your first post on this incident, you did not exist in my world. Now I check this thread several times a day, hoping for some good news.
Our prayers are with you.
sue is still in the hospital , still running tests trying to find main cause of symptoms. Mom was with her all day today. she said sue had a good cry. Sue is scared right now. she still has no feeling in her feet and can not move her right leg at all. If there is anything positive here it is that Thank the Lord, the paralysis has not spread . Please keep her in your prayers and both of my parents especially my mom. it is hard on everyone right involved right now. thanks !
Tuesday afternoon update :
Tests results back. Doctors said Sue was deffinitely exposed to high levels of toxins from the Mercury spill.
Her heart rhythm and blood pressure are erratic, so they are ordering a scan of her heart to make sure the toxins have not affected her heart.
Still no use of right leg.
My parents are very upset. My dad is angry. this is deffinitely criminal negligence on the part of the school district that she worked for.
My husband was going to call my parents to night and and give them phone numbers, etc to contact OSHA and launch an investigation.
Please keep her in your prayers. Pray her heart is not affected.
It's seems like a nightmare unfolding right before your eyes. I'm still praying and I am so sorry about the whole situation.
Ask no more Amy as prayers and good thoughts continue to come your way during this very difficult time for you all right now. Please continue to keep me updated on this situation my dear.
my sister sue is no longer in the hospital. It a long story, but my parents were not happy with the doctors she had in the hospital. after 10 days they still were not 100 percent positive it was the mercury she was exposed for, they were not giving her any treatments at all, they would run tests but not say for what for, etc, so my parents decided to call in a new neurologist.
this new doctor seems to have more on the ball. he told sue that hospitals do not do much over the weekend, especially a holiday weekend. he could tell sue had not slept much and that she was emotionally worn out too, so he said after checking her vitals first , that he felt the best thing for her was to go home and rest, get some sleep, and be with family. With the condition that she see him first thing on Tuesday
so she went home, and my mom said Sue slept for hours, and that she sounded in better spirits today, and sue claims she actually had abit of tingling in her right leg.
as for the school district, belive me they will not get off scott free. my sister mary told my mom that if sue or my dad do not contact OSHA, that she will.
thanks for continuous prayers. its not over yet, but at least there is some glimmer of hope, that sue will walk again.
We continue to pray for your sister, you, and your family! Going home and having her spirits lifted will hopefully do wonders for the healing process.
A good sign today ! My sister Sue said she felt some pain in her right leg, that she has been unable to use. So that may mean that she is getting feeling and sensation back in that leg !
Pain is good! ...at least in these circumstances... We're all here in your corner....
Amy that is such wonderful news. Please know that you, Sue, and your entire family remain in my thoughts and prayers at this time. Please continue to keep us updated Sue's progress.
Hugs and love to you as always lass.
Continuing to send hugs and prayers to you, your sister, and your family. Please keep us up to date on her progress.
Thankyou everyone. Hopefully when she sees the doctor on Tuesday we shall have more info on her prognosis. But like i said, hopefully this is a sign that she will be able to walk again.
I continue to keep you and your family in my thoughts, and will definitely be keeping your sister in my thoughts tomorrow ~ hopefully this doctor will be more on top of things & she will continue to improve :)
Sue saw her family doctor on Friday. Long story short : Her symptoms were definitely caused by chemical exposure.
He says he has seen this before, and that the paralysis is the majority of the time temporary and that the symptoms are reversible. It just takes along time for them to go away. So time will tell. That is about all the info i have for now. Thanks for the prayers everyone.
Lady Amy,
I had not seen this post before but I am so glad that your sister is doing better.
I am also glad your parents had the presence of mind to pull her from that hospital- sounds like they were in kahoots with the school district.
I am sending constant good energy towards your sister and your whole family.
Good to hear, Lady Amy... Positive energy is still being transmitted...
I'm so glad to hear that the paralysis is temporary, and that her symptoms will eventually go away! More positive thoughts are being sent your way!
Amy you don't even need to ask how I feel cause you know how I feel already. I am so very glad that we have finally gotten some answers as to what caused Sue's symptoms and all. Please know that you, Sue, and your entire famly continue to remain in my thoughts and prayers at this time.
