Hello everyone, I have been lurking for a while and decided to introduce myself since opening day is so close.
My name is Skip, I am a photographer and I love going to and taking pics at faire. I have upgraded my
equipment since last year and am looking to take lots and lots of images of all you wonderful people. I
am planning on going on both opening and closing days so if you see me (see avitar - tall and slightly bald! :o)
please stop me and let me take your picture which I will be posting on my pbase site pbase.com/reknox (http://pbase.com/reknox).
Sorry I won't be dressed up but I did notice a shop in Loveland where I live so by next year I hope to fit in
a little better.
After spending a little time on this site I must say that all of you seem to be really nice and friendly. I have been a
little reluctant to approach strangers in public to ask to photograph them but after reading the posts here I will feel
much more comfortable - at least at CoRF!
Very glad I found this site and look forward to meeting all of you in person.
BTW where and when will you be gathering for a group pic - would love to get a shot of that.
Skip
Welcome! :) Hope you enjoy the faire, feel free to come and say hi any time!
And I'm not sure that we decided on the group pic...last year we did it on closing weekend, but the year before that was on opening weekend....thoughts, anyone? Was there a decision made?
Welcome Skip!
As for feeling shy about taking pictures... there is a photo contest every year, so people here are very used to strangers taking their pictures. Don't worry, most of us don't bite. You may want to watch out for Cap'n Spleen though. Actually I think the majority of us are hams.
I think we decided to take the group picture on the final weekend on both Saturday and Sunday due to so many people not being able to make one of the two days. The time and location I think was the stickler. It is usually by front gate before closing.
Welcome, Skip!
Please allow me to give you two small pieces of advise:
1. Don't feel at all shy about taking photos of anyone in garb. Not only are we used to it, most of us actually enjoy having photos taken as it gives us an opportunity to meet the photographer(s). (Chime in, please, fellow rennies!)
2. Be careful about coming to the Faire in garb. Once you do, you'll have so much fun you won't want to attend in street clothes (mundanes) ever again!
So come, have a great time, and take photos until your fairy box starts to smoke if you like.
Well met!
I will agree with previous postings, just about all of us love being photographed!
And no apology is needed for not dressing up ... but I agree that wearing the proper garb will completely change the experience, for the better.
And your question might very well spur us to making a plan for the group photo ...
Come by my booth, photographers love to stop by and take photos of the children being facepainted. They are so adorable... Just make sure you ask the parents for permission.. as I'm really protective of the kids in my booth and I have been known to stick my hand over the face of the child and ruin your shot, if I feel the photographer is doesn't have permission to do so. I'm located inside the gate and just to the left in front of the Queens fancy.
Thank you all for the warm welcome. Again I really feel that this is an exceptional group of great people that I hope to become a part of.
I will definitely be asking many more people to photograph them and not feel like I am being too intrusive.
I will try to find all of you to meet you in person and Mistress Charlotte I will most definitely stop by and get some shots of the face painting.
I am very impressed that you look after the kids at your booth even though you don't even know them - again great people here.
I will be keeping an eye out for the group shot time and place. Just can't wait to take some awesome shots this year.
Skip
I know that my crew and myself are a bunch of photo hams lol.
Well Heidi-ho neighbor. Toki and I are also in Loveland and I know the shop you refer to. She does OUTSTANDING work. But I will advise oreder something you want made now as she is so busy it will take her 6 to 12 months to get it done.
Like you I am a photographer (on the side) You can find me at either http://www.delaneyalysa.com or http://www.pbase.com/delaneyalysa
You will find Toki and I there opening day outside the gates as well as Baron and Baroness. And yes we all do love seeing our images captured.
if you look for me... I will be most likely in a greed and gold noble dress with a black and gold gabled hood on. Thats the Renaissance hat the looks like a house sitting on the head. Toki hopefully will be in a royal blue and red doublet with panned slops (pumpkin pants) and knee high black boots. he has a full beard.
Hope to see you and stop us and say hi,
OH best advise, go left out of the gate instead of right. Charlettes booth is there and many of us stop there first.
I am so looking forward to June 12th!!! I will have no problem asking those in garb to take pictures this year. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible in person.
Other than some pictures on this site I won't know who too many of you are so please stop me if you see me and say hi. You all should be able to recognize me. I am tall enough to have outgrown my hair, will either look very professional or like a very big dork with two cameras (14 gigs of cards that I hope make it through the day) and since I tore several ligaments in my left ankle a short while ago I will also walk with a limp. Come to think of it I probably could have pulled off the whole pirate thing pretty good, just need to make that sore ankle look like a peg leg is all!!!
Hey Lady de Laney I have seen your web site and like your images very much, look forward to meeting you and getting to talk to another photog and one from Loveland to boot. Maybe you can introduce me to some of the others from here and help me get off to a running start.
See you in a couple of weeks!!!
Skip
Only 14GB of memory? LOL. I can usually make it with 4 but have 7. But then again I don't shoot in RAW which takes a Huge amount. Nelson Chen however does plus to boot he uses 2 cameras that shoot at 21 Mega Pixies each.
I'll be more than happy to intoduce you to others and to sit and chat.
See you in less than 2 weeks.
Laney

I handed my sister her camera and told her that I had gotten lots of mega pixies. She looked at me like I was nuts lol

I have no idea if I started that or not... probably not. But it was something I just pulled off the top of my head one day a few years ago at faire.
I had a dane come up to me and start ribbing me about having a camera while I was in renaissance garb and how UN-Renaissance and out of place it was. I said "Sir, this is not a camera, this is a Da Vinci Fairy Box. It has 8.1 Mega Pixies in it and when I open their window to the outside, they instantly paint an exact image of what they see!" He gave me a funny look like "OH" and walked off. So since that day I have always refered to my camera as a Da Vinci Fairy Box with 8.1 mega pixies inside of it.
I do know others have always refered to their cameras as Da Vinci Boxes and I did not start that.
I saw someone at the Arizona faire this year who was dressed as a barbarian and had a custom case for his camera that involved a lot of fur and leather, it's really awesome how creative people get with "hiding" their cameras--er, Da Vinci Fairy Boxes--in garb.
I will be with the very large group "Fleet" of Pirates, you won't be able to miss us, marching up to the pub after opening cannon.
I am known as Madam Devyne, please ask and I will try to get some of our beauties to pose for you!
BTW - the only suggestion I would have for posting photos is this; some wenches, even though they are wearing corsets and such, can be uncomfortable with photos of them being posted if they don't know what the photo is (muddled enough?) What I am saying is, if you get a photo that looks to be a bit heavy on the cleavage, make sure you confirm it will be ok to post in a public forum. There was a time in the not too distant past that some photogs were taking questionable pics and posting them - ladies were finding themselves posted up and they had no idea that the photos were being taken.
Please don't take this as me suggesting you are a shady character nor a warning against taking pics, most of us are ok and love to ham it up a bit, but please be sure to introduce yourself and hand out cards with your name and website, this makes some people less weary.
I look forward to meeting you this Saturday!
I agree with Jess - I'm always willing to let a professional photog capture me, provided he/she asks first, mostly because I want to know where the photo is ending up and if it's being used for profit. (Amateur photogs and the random mundane who wants a memory of the day doesn't bother me really.) The only time I've ever had to ask someone to stop was with a guy who was taking pictures from a distance, and then would come and creep creepily around my booth. It never hurts to ask, and in most cases, it's worth saving you a lot of trouble lately.
I know of that incedient and it was a Professional Photographer that did it. Sadly Many male photographers (Not all) like to focus in on that region of territory. Sometimes you cannot avoid it though, but that area SHOULD NOT be the focus. it should be the face, eye's, garb.
I have asked and funny Many of the faire Photographers do not have cards. I did last year, but will not this year as I cannot afford to make them this year. The sad part of NOT making money.
Thank you Madam Devyne for bringing that up. If you look at my Pbase page I think you will see that I try to not lower myself to the "sex sells" mentality. I have noticed that most of the people that have very high page visits use this as a way to get attention. And while I won't lie to any of you and say that I don't appreciate the look of a corseted outfit I don't think that makes the image. I really don't have a particular look I like over another I just really love the period dress of both the men and women. I know it must be hot as all get out but I love the long layered dresses that literally cover everything as much as anything else.
There is also one guy that is in black leather studded with metal spikes pretty muscular and tough looking that I look for every time I have gone cause he makes a great image. So while I have noticed that a lot of men mostly take pictures of women I just want to get the best shots I can of all the very interesting people who attend.
I again want to thank those of you who have assured me that approaching those in garb is perfectly acceptable. I will not only do this but I will have cards to give out so those I have taken pictures of have the chance to let me know if they don't want it out there for everybody to see. I don't want anybody saying something I have done is either in bad taste or inappropriate in any way.
Thanks for the input and help and I too look forward to meeting as many of you as I can in less than a week!!!

I will agree and atest to Skips work as I think he would mine.
While I do not have my normal business cards this year, I am printing out info on card stock. I remembered I had some of that and while not even close to being my normal business cards I carry, it will have my name, my websites and my email address.
Oh and thanks Skip, I agree I LOVE seeing the courtly dressed people. But what ever makes the best image is what I strive for. To be honest showing ones breast was considered BAD and the church could and WOULD try you for herasy and withcraft for showing off ones breasts as this was a sign of a loose woman amd imorality during the renaissance. Corsets of the time actually flatten you out and may you cylindrical in shape. It was during the 17th centry that corset started to really push the breasts up and out and enhance them.
Have you looked at Vistaprint, Delaney? I got my business cards through them, they're excellent quality and I got 500 of them for $10. If you poke around on there regularly you can find really amazing deals for your cards; easy to get some nice ones and not break the bank.
May i suggest www,gotprint.com you can get 1000 business cards you upload your design for $17.80 plus shipping this is a 4/0 card with uv coating.

I will most certainly attest to the quality and tasteful nature of your work Lady de Laney.
While I always have regular business cards with me, and since I do not intend selling anything I shoot at the faire, the cards I will be printing up for handing out will be very simple with just my Pbase site info.
Well as I previously admitted about the corsets ::), I will also admit that personally I am not offended by those in garb who choose not to adhere strictly to the period dress ;).
I don't know about you Lady de Laney but I would just love to shoot a wedding based on a renaissance theme. Man would that not only be a fun wedding but what beautiful images to be captured.
I am writing this while the news is on in the morning and it looks like the weather should be just fantastic this weekend, cooler than it has been so my wife will be much happier (she just hates the heat).

It appears as though this weekend will be absolutely fabulous!
*Weather report last night was 65/67 with rain in Denver - should be nice and cool (as Skip stated ;) )
*Everyone is getting super excited about opening day!
*Our group will be in the Pirates Pub throughout most of the weekend, it's our gathering/meeting up place. I will make every attempt to visit the boothies this weekend, too!

I've caught a few at faire myself. I always feel out of place though as they always have a photographer there so i stand in the back and shoot. Can't get the best images that way. Oh and yes i would love to shoot a Renaissance Wedding... actually ANY wedding preferably themed. To bad you were not around 16 years ago when I got married the 1st time. We had a Renaissance Wedding with pig roast in our overgrown forested back yard. Now if I can just Toki to marry me... someone needs to REALLY Nudge him to ask me.

The weddings are usually conducted at the chapel. If your start up the high road from the joust field and walk about 100 yards, it will be on your right. The wedding schedule will be posted right outside the chapel fence. This year, there will be at least one and sometimes two weddings each festival day.

I know exactly what you mean, the very first day I got my very first dslr I went to my nieces wedding and it was no problem telling that I was not the photographer that day. Everything was shot from the side or not everybody was looking at me or whatever it was it was easy to tell I was not the photog.
Now as my wife broke our time machine I can't go back and shoot your first wedding but if a second one rolls around just like Zoe it would be a great honor and I only hope that after meeting me and my being around for awhile you still feel the same way and would let me :-[.
If he needs a nudge tell him you found a very reasonably priced photographer (that only applies here ;)) to shoot the nuptials. Hey it couldn't hurt!!

Hi, Skip! My condolences on your ankle. I'm just getting over a sprain myself and it's been so - so very so - deeply annoying. On the up-side, I'll know how to spot you . . .
I'm new to this faire but you're welcome to hook up with my ladyfriend and me for an initial walk-around. I'll be wearing black and green garb and a straw hat. My friend will almost certainly be wearing something off-shoulder with a black corset.
I plan to take the good advice to turn left out of the gate at opening time and stop first at Mistress Charlotte's booth to pay respects. You probably can catch us there if you wish.
Tell ya what - first-timer to first-timer, I'll toss my husband's surcoat into the car. It's a "free size." If you get inside the gate and discover you really want some garb, you can toss it on over your street clothes for the day.

Thanks for the info, I did see this on the main site but unfortunately I think I am only going to be able to make it to opening and closing days this year (hey twice as many as years past ;)). Plus just showing up at someone's wedding and taking pictures would not seem quite right and like Lady de Laney mentioned earlier shooting from the side just isn't the same thing. I am way too much of a control freak (at least when it comes to pictures) to be satisfied with shooting from the side.

I will most definitely look for you but if you see me first (see avatar and various descriptions - slight loss of hair etc...) make sure to stop me and introduce yourself. Oh and get your pic taken of course.
I am not sure why but my wife and I always head left out of the gate - just naturally tend to break out of the pack I guess ;D.
I really appreciate the offer of the coat - not sure how it would look with shorts but hey I'm game. I am more of a cooler/cold weather person so some of the outfits I see at faire would never work for me. No I am definitely going to get me a kilt when I garb up 8).

Ok so I was trying to figure out a name for my ren-alter-ego-self and asked Lady de Laney for help and wanted to know what the rest of you thought of a suggestion she had which is Master Da Vinci? I was trying to go off the Da Vinci fairy box and the mega pixies I saw her post about in another thread. She mentioned the artist side and what she didn't even know is that I am also a pencil artist (depends on who you talk to about whether or not that's worth mentioning) so I like the Da Vinci reference but am willing to open it up to everybody to help me with a new name.
Luckily Lady de Laney corrected me on my first attempt before I threw it out here for everybody to see ;). If the majority likes Master Da Vinci then I am more than happy with that but am open to any names you all might come up with.
Thanks for the input

Master DaVinci would fit you well, Skip. Now you need to go into overdrive on a garb ensemble to match!
A suggestion: If you wish to be approximately period correct, an artisan of your stature would wear something similar to what Professor Loquacious wears.

You may want to think of a first name that isn't Leonardo so you aren't trapped into answering questions about his inventions. Like....maybe Thomas, or Bernard. And be Leo's little brother, the lesser known, but equally talented, DaVinci. Could be a lot of fun...

Master DaVinci would fit you well, Skip. Now you need to go into overdrive on a garb ensemble to match!
A suggestion: If you wish to be approximately period correct, an artisan of your stature would wear something similar to what Professor Loquacious wears.
So no bermuda shorts and Hawaiian shirt?
Well unfortunately this will be the closest description to what I will be wearing on opening day 8).
Personally....I liked Bernard! :D there's a Dimitrius on this site...so that might get confusing.
Not to discourage you in any way because that is very clever! I like it. I just think Bernard is silly and would make people go ??? "who the heck was Bernard DaVinci?" lol.
Im Tonnya, on here Lady Remi (was my old character name and I have yet to care enough to try and change it here) but I am currently known as Mischief the Fairy. I will be out opening day as well, as a matter of fact we are at T minus about 12 hours as we speak to opening canon ::happy dance::
Anyway I will be out there with my little fairy-let and my Elfling (5 y.o. son and 4 y.o. daughter) and would LOVE LOVE LOVE to have some photos of the three of us together. So I will most certainly be looking for you!
Well met and Huzzah!!! Seeeeee you tomorrow!!!!!! :::Skips away:::
