Title: Ankle boots, wider calves?
Post by: Mairte on July 09, 2010, 11:36:03 AM
I am trying to find a good style of ankle boots with wider calves, reasonably priced. I am not sure on style and after that, where would I even FIND them. Of course they dont have to be ankle boots, even something comfortable I can wear with an irish dress.(if shoes, flat heel in wide?)
I have heard moccasins are the way to go as far as comfort.

Oops. Ack. Reading back over that, it didnt sound right! :-[
I meant I am preferably looking for ankle boots (wide). If they are knee boots or something such, a wider calf is needed. BUT I am willing to take advance on the comfort of any kind of footwear for renn fest. Whew. :D

You might want to look into a ghillie (sp?) type shoe, such as the ones sold here www.medievalmoccasins.com/

The width of the leg is totally adjustable, they work for any social class if you decide you want to move up or down in station, and they're soooooooooooooo comfy.

Checking the link out right now.:) I appreciate it. I dont want something that looks totally "off" with my outfit but I also dont want anything that will be killing my feet a couple hours in!
Which ones are the ghillies? There are low top and high top moccasins, open toe sandals etc. The prices arent bad! :)

Willin Soles makes the most comfortable ghillies in the world!  I love mine.  They are so soft and squishy, and priced great.   The extremely soft and comfortable inner lining is in the original price, whereas I have seen other companies that charge extra for it.

Lady Nicolette is a forum member, so you can renmail her.  I know on Facebook she put up some photos of the different styles of shoes in their shop, and one is more beautiful than another.  Several forum members have their shoes and can attest to the excellent quality.

Have you considered just typical Mary Janes?  Believe it or not, that is what was worn during the Renaissance.   If you are looking at something because of mud issues, what is your spending budget?  There are a lot of awesome custom boot makers.  I got mine almsot ten years ago now and still love 'em.

The style of all of those shoes is based on Scottish ghillies. Shoes without a tongue that tie above the ankle are ghillies. I have the "low top moccasins" from Medieval Moccasins, and I love them to bits.

I was going to suggest Maryjanes, too! I have a pair that looks just like the ones in this painting:

Click here (http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL417/1033223/17480040/315892061.jpg) for the whole picture.

Mine are from Travelsmith, but it looks like they don't carry that exact style anymore. I've also had a black pair from Dexter. They've been in style (again) for a number of years now, so they're easy to find. They work really well for anything that looks historical, or for middle/noble class.

I will probably get a pair of mary janes (I have seen similiar to them on a couple of ren sites I was looking at) that arent at all pricy.
I DO still want a pair of boots though. Budget is probably up to $100. If I could spend more I would! I just have to be practical.Sigh. :-\

You may want to try  these mules then (http://www.amazon.com/Bass-Womens-Helena-Mule-Denim/dp/B000FZYUHO/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=shoes&qid=1278985709&sr=1-5).   I have a pair and they are comfy.  Ugly, but great at faire.  If you look at this painting (http://www.festiveattyre.com/research/florentine/flor6.html) you can see a very similar pair in between all the ladies around the bed.

Try the thrift store!  Very hit or miss, but when you find something, the price can't be beat. :)

Good ideas, all of them!
Elennare, I will probably give the thrift store a try too next time I am up by my parents. There is a place called Anna D's in RedWing. Like you say, its hit or miss but when its hit, oh what treasures you can find!! :)
