Well not sewing exactly.
I bought a Knifty Knitter at Wally World yesterday and it is so cool. I made a hair scarf (1hr), a hat (2hrs), and am now working on a full scarf. I've always wanted to learn to knit and this is a really easy way to do it. The website has all kinds of projects on it and I look forward to trying them! ;D
Anyone else have one of these things?
Oh, I have that set, also! Two, actually, since I found one set at a yard sale for $5. My daughter and I both love it, and we use it all fall and winter long! I even have the long straight one that will make flat scarves/panels, and have been thinking about making a patchwork afgan this year. I have the yarn for it, and now all I'm waiting for is cooler weather. They're fun and easy to use, and I still enjoy mine after having it for over 5 years! I should check out their website so I can learn how to make different things, though, because everyone in my family has matching hat and scarf sets already... LOL
Oh I have been wanting to buy one. But didnt want to be the first one to try it out. Thank you for sharing. I think I might have to buy it now.
It is super easy!
The website has instructions for hats, scarves, shawls, blankets, stuffed animals, booties (not just for babies!), pillows, mittens, sweaters, bags, and even cell phone totes! But the patterns are posted by users, not the company, so some of the instructions are poorly written.
I did 15" of my scarf throughout the day today and it took a total of 2.5 hrs. Makes you appreciate the scarf that costs $20 at the store! But it will make for great gifts.
Rani- do you have the round or long loom set or both?
I have two sets of the round, with all four sizes, and I also have one of the long ones, which makes scarves that are double the thickness of the tube shaped ones. The long one is only a single loom that I bought separately, though, instead of a set, although I've seen the set. I enjoy all of them, and I'm going to check out the patterns for other things!
I love my Knifty Knitter! I've made quite a few hats and scarves so far. I haven't yet tried making anything more advanced, but I have bought a few pattern books so I can try when I have time.
i used mine to make pants ;D yep fuzzy pants (makes great pants liners in the winter)used lions brand yarn and the medium sized hoop and made pants legs then took the larger one and didn't close the circle did it twice and stiched them together added the legs stitched them together and added yarn draw string to keep em up
also created a friend of mine a matching hat and scarf set for her birthday one year
also created a hat and matching warmer i usually wear the hat and then the warmer over it becaus it fits over the back of the hat and covers my nose and i don't have to worry about rewrapping
i have one also simular that is a serenity loom but i'm run into a snag on the poncho i'm creating since i'm not sure about how to replace the broken pegs and i'm afraid to break anymore.
I have one of the long straight ones. LOVE IT... I've had it for...oh....4 years now. I have a scarf in any color you could possibly want or imagine... along with my sisters and mother. LOL. My MIL hasn't been kind enough to receive one yet! :P
Lady C, those pants sound pretty genius! I'd love to see a picture of them!!!
FortuneRose, here's hoping that your MIL sweetens up soon and inspires you to create a bit more... or, if not, I at least hope that you get the urge to make something fun again soon!
I've got all sorts of yarn that I keep finding on sale for $1-2 per skein, and I need to start using some of it soon before I'm burried in it, but I have so many projects on hold right now that I feel like I'm not finishing anything lately, so I'd better not start anything else for a while... ::) I will try and get a few pics up of some of the things I've done once I get them all unpacked, though. (I've been using that excuse since we moved... :-\ )

i will get a picture of those pants soon for you rani i got the idea from a scarf of mine it's a blue fuzzy thing and much like the ones you make with these looms but i was looking at it one day and decided to put it on my leg and see how it felt i thought hmmm you know it might be nice to have a pair of fuzzy pants for when it's cold so i created me a pair.
i have tons of yarn i keep saying i'm going to cut myself off and not let myself purchase anymore until i use it all but i know when i get to Peru I'll bring home a few bags ;D
The local craft section of Walmart was cleaning out very old stock. My mother walked out of walmart with a shopping cart full. $40 worth of yarn at 10cents a piece! EVERYONE got afgans that year.
The Pink pirate told me I can't start any more projects until I finish 2 UFO's (UnFinished Objects). It's worked...somewhat. ;D
mmmm no new projects until i fininsh some ufo's sound like and idea just which project to start with ;D ;D
That sounds cool!
I crochet! This winter, I will be working on Baby stuff for a new grandchild of mine coming the end of March to early April 2011.
JoAnn has the Nifty Knitter and accessories on sale (25% off) through August 14. :D
Just finished my first scarf/hat! Scarf took 6hrs, hat took 2hrs. I got faster as I went, though, so the next set shouldn't take as long.
Congratulations!!! You'll be amazed at how quick you get with it, and you might try a couple of different ways of holding the loom and hook, just to see if there is a more efficient method for you. I had the set for over a year before it occurred to me to try it a different way, and now I can finish things in about 2/3 the time I did before. I know people who hold them all sorts of ways, so what seems like the most obvious may not necessarily be the most efficient...
Love to see some pics, btw... ;)
OH, tell me how you hold it!
Hehehhe, I bought a set yesterday! Plus the small round loom, and happily made flowers last night, and started on a scarf!

I'll join your picket line if you dont mind ;D
Ok, I'll see if I can explain it...
At first, I held the loom vertically, with the pegs facing away from me, after I had cast on two (or more) rows of stitches, and hooked the lower row of stitches (closest to the base of the pegs) by placing the point of the hook between the stitches and twisting my wrist toward the outside to carry the loop over the upper stitch. This caused my wrist to get sore after only a short while, but it didn't occur to me to try a different method until much later...
Now, I hold the loom vertically with the pegs facing me, and hook the first row of stitches from the side closest to the base of the peg, lifting it over the top row and toward me, with far less wrist-twisting motion, making it possible for me to knit for much longer periods before my wrist tires. (Since I have some joint problems and Fibromyalgia, this leaves me in less pain later, as well).
Hope some of that made at least a little sense. I'll try to remember to take a couple of pictures to demonstrate, later when I manage to dig them out of the unpacking chaos.
I also want pictures of these flowers, Lady R!!! They sound lovely, and what I'm picturing are the type of yarn flowers that my grandmother made afgans out of in the 70's...
I'll stand in the pictures line. :)
This knitting loom sounds interesting. What's the price on one?
i think i'm gonna have to try this doodad :)
Anna, I've seen the set of 4 round looms sold at Hobby Lobby for $14.99, although I haven't priced them in a couple of years. With the 40% off coupon (http://www.hobbylobby.com/weekly/weekly.cfm) that's in most Sunday papers they can be very reasonable, and sometimes they go on sale for half off, though not often.
I got one of these for christmas and succeeded in making many different sized tubes. I just kept saying they were sleeves. Joann's ha them there and if get on their mailing list you can get a 40% off coupon
Here are the two flowers that I made the other night. I added a border around the middle part of the flower, because I liked the way it looked. ;D
(http://lh6.ggpht.com/_z9cN4ycfueI/TFgngm5H9gI/AAAAAAAAAPY/eV3y2U-RUW4/s720/knitflowers.jpg)
I finished a scarf last night, too, and will be adding fringe and the flowers to it later.
Oh so lovely. I really need to go get me one of those knitting things now. Cant wait to see the finished scarf.
That's gonna be so cute. :)
i don't hold mine still i move mine constantly
when i'm putting thread on it i hold it on the side and turn it as i go around
then i turn it around as i pull the yarn over and then pressing the yarn down i turn it as well i'm pretty effiencent at it.
I made a back pack out of my large round loom. Found the pattern on-line as a free loom pattern, I use it a faire to carry my crap in.
Lady R, would love the pattern to the flowers if you will share.
So I just went out and bought the long loom kit and more yarn! $15 at JoAnns.
I hope you had a coupon for it! ;)
Robin, I made a bag also, and lined it with a terrycloth hand towel. I just sewed the towel into a tube, stitched across one end, then sewed the bottom corners together instead of gathering it, so that it would have a flat bottom, attached both pieces with matching yarn, made a long strap that I threaded through grommets in the top of the towel and attached both ends to the bottom of the bag so it can be worn as a backpack or carried as a sling bag. Wish I could find it to take pics... ::)
It was 25% off, regular $20. It has four pieces. I looked at the single pieces and some were almost the same price, each!
So I am now in love with the long loom! I started a scarf last night and it took me half the time to get half way through the length I want. Because of the style of weave it is also a lot thicker with a single strand.
The results from that double sided method is pretty lush, isn't it?!? You can also make baby blankets and such by using the single sided method on first one side and then the other, and not closing it off on one end to make the tube, but reversing direction when you get to the end, instead.
I've made scarves with that one using eyelash yarn, and they're gorgeous, but that stuff sheds worse than a long haired cat!!! I have a bunch of suede yarn I got from Hobby Lobby for $1 per skein on clearance that are going to become hats and scarves this year, and now I'm really looking forward to when I'll have some free time for knitting! LOL
Here is the link to the backpack.

Oh... WOW!!! That.. is.. AWESOME, Robin!!! I never even thought of anything like that, but now I'm suddenly overflowing with ideas for using that bottom weave pattern for all sorts of things! ;D I'm going to use it tonight, in fact, and I already have a different sort of project in mind! I'll post pics if it turns out like I'm imagining... Thanks soooo much for that link!!!
Ok, so all you Nifty Knitters *talk* a big game, but where are the PHOTOS of your projects, hmmmmm? ;)
I left my camera at work last night, which is why I have no pics, yet, of my scarf that I finished last night!
All knitting is on hold while I work on my latest rush project (red carpet gown, squeeeee!!!!!!)...
But I will post scarf pics tonight. I am also planning on fingerless mitts to match, and possibly even a hat!
Found these instructions for the flowers ladies. I know what I am going to be making. I will try to snap a picture of my pack and a smaller version I use to keep my favors in at faire.

Ok, just a couple of shots, because I'm still unpacking (never-ending story, I know, but you should
see all the stuff I'm having to find places for, and it's ALL stuff I use, so I can't even store most of it!!!), and I couldn't find the scarves. They're in whatever bag I stuffed all the winter things in while I was packing, and that's under a mountain in the laundry room... :-\
My version of Jayne's hat (from Firefly) minus the flaps (still haven't decided if I'm gonna add them or not):
Both sets of looms plus the long loom, the few hats I could find, and samples of the Lion Suede yarn I'll be using next, in Olive and Spice colors (I have 4 skeins of each), and also some of the Sage Green Sugar'n Cream all cotton yarn (also 4 skeins) that I'm planning to use next: (edit: Oh, and the small blue loom has an experimental project on it for the fingerless wrist warmers/long gloves using crochet thread.
Jayne's hat on the hat form. Please excuse the purple strands from the eyelash yarn... it sheds (and I've got lots and lots of it still to be used...) :-\ :

I've also got two plastic storage bins (48 qt size) full of various shades, weights and types of yarn to use this winter, and a couple of paper grocery sacks, as well, and my daughter has asked if she can use the long loom to make herself a patchwork afgan... I think I'll show her how to make the flowers, also, and she can add them to her blanket!
Here's a video of the flower loom in action:

Thanks!
Wow... there is an endless stream of flower loom videos after that one! I even watched one that made flowers out of plastic grocery bags!!! :o How amazing...
I have found a much more efficient and FASTER way to use the round loom! It starts by using the hook that comes with the long loom (more L shaped).
Tie the starting tail off tight. Hold the round loom perpendicular to your body with the pegs facing right (left for left handers). All in one motion; rotate the loom away from you with your left (right) hand while wrapping with the right (left), push the first loops down and continue for the second row of loops. Now, rotate the loom towards you with your left (right) hand while pulling the bottom loop away to the right (left) with your right (left) hand. I hold the feed tail for 2-3 loops before letting go and rotating. The feed tail will stay in place once you have pulled 2-3 loops. You aren't exactly pulling the loop over the peg as much as you are pulling it away from the loom and releasing. The loop will automatically fall to the correct side of the peg. When you finish a row place the loom on a flat surface and use both hands to push the top loops down. Repeat. Once you have 2-3 rows you can untie the starter tail.
You can also try wrapping towards and knitting away if that is easier.
I can make a large, green loom (7"-8") hat in 45 minutes.
pics coming soon
Ok, latest project is sort of the backpack pattern, although I doubt I'm following it precisely, since I only glanced at it... and I'm doing it in a pouch size.
Beginning...
Further along...
Almost to the outer edge, and about 5 hours put into the weaving...
Done weaving the bottom, and it has bowed more than I expected, but I think it's because I made the weave so tight it stretched the warp cords. Nothing will get through the bottom, though...
View of the inside, with about 5 rows of the side knitting done...

I'm using a "triple stitch", where I load three layers of stitches on each peg before I pull the bottom stitch over the top two, so the knit will be tighter...
I'll post the finished product later, but I just wanted to share so there is proof that we're actually using our toys, and not just talking about them! J/K I just saw that backpack link and couldn't wait to try it out!!! I also really want one of the flower looms, since the smallest blue loom seems a little big for them. Sorry for the big pics...
Here are scarf photos, finally!

All knitting is on hold right now, although my flower loom is being put to work on the red-carpet dress I am making for this Thursday's event (I am making a black silk flower, using 1" wide bais cut silk, and will pin a brooch in the center of the flower for extra-special fanciness!) Remember folks, the looms aren't just for yarn! ;D
Lovely scarf. I WANT ONE NOW!!! ;D Please show pics of this finished dress and new flower.
Gorgeous scarf, Lady R, and I love the flowers on there, also! I really want the flower loom now!
I finished the body of the pouch, and now I need to put drawstrings in. I'll get a pic of it up here soon. The knit is tighter than I thought it would be, so I might not have to line it after all.
I bought a rectangle loom. The store I went to was out of the Knifty Knitter kits. I made a scarf for my son! Love it and wow was it easy peasy!
Aaaaand now you're hooked! (pun totally intended...) :P heheh
I admit to being intrigued... There might be a way for me to knit without tying my thumbs together with this thing!
And the idea of making the flowers out of ribbon, strips of cloth, and even strips cut from plastic bags is fun.
How do you cast on and cast off? I'd hate for all the work to come undone.
Jo Anns has a sale on the knitters right now. Although I think it is only online.

Kate, the instructions that come with the kit show how to cast on and off, and there are tons of instructional videos on youtube for doing things the makers never even dreamed of! It's fun to experiment with, also, and I even watched a video that shows how to make flat square panels on the round looms, so really, there is soooo much that can be done with this little tool that makes it well worth the fairly small investment. Finding yarn on sale isn't too difficult, either!
Ok, I've got some errands to run, then I'll take a couple of pics of the pouch. Still have to put drawstrings in it, but that will be easy. I'm just going to finger crochet two single strands of the same yarn (since it's the only yarn I can get to at the moment...) then run them through the knit from opposite sides.
Can't wait to see the bag you made, D!!! :)
Here is my bag. I used the small blue loom.

Lovely colours!
Thanks for posting pictures. I see better now how it works. :)
Ok, I'm done, finally. Funny how little things keep getting in the way when we're trying to frinish the things we enjoy, eh?
Finished pouch, with braided double drawstring for hanging off a belt, and Griffin decoration. Sorry for the glare...

Both are very well done!!!! If I can find my camera :(, I will post mine.
I used the Yellow loom. It's fairly large.
I also used the blue loom for the one to hang from my belt.
Here's a peek at my ribbon flower I made for my red carpet dress. I ran out of the black silk, and right now, with the flooding in Ames, there is no way to get more, so I used some black grosgrain ribbon I had in my stash. I pinned a pretty brooch to the center of the flower, and will be sewing the flower to the dress and sash.

(I still need the 3/4-sleeves, hem and zipper.)
NICE!!!
Oh, how lovely! Very Audrey Hepburn meets Jackie Kennedy!!! I would love a close-up of the ribbon flower, if you have one...
Now I really, really want the flower loom!!! :D
Robin, can't wait to see the bag you made... I'm thinking I might make one with the blue loom, and just not pull the bottom quite so tight. I have lots of other projects I'm supposed to be working on right now, though... :-\ ::)
That looks wonderful. I really need to go buy me one now.
Finally have a close-up pic uploaded. Please forgive the competing shades of black. I was in a hurry to finish the dress, and didn't have time to be choosy. Plus, it was only going to be seen in dim lighting anyway, LOL!

Oh, I love it! I think the tone-on-tone gives it more depth, anyway... Now I definitely have to get the flower loom! I can see using it to make custom bows for gift packages, as well...
Very lovely work, Lady R!
I just finished a hat yesterday that is closer to a snood, actually. I used the largest round loom because I don't like hats that smash my hair, with the sueded yarn I mentioned previously, and it came out very much like a snood! I used the Spice color, and now I'm working on a flat scarf in the complimentary Jade Green color. I'm not big on matching sets... :D
I bought the assorted set today at Joanns with my 50% off coupon for $10. I have already started the first 5 rows on the totebag it shows on the package, and I finished a ribbon flower. I'm excited to try new things!
Huzzah!!! Another convert! You'll be "hooked", just like the rest of us... ;)
I'm just about to finish the scarf I started night before last, using 3 skeins of 3oz bulky Lion Suede yarn, 122 yds per skein. It's really long, but I used the 32 peg long loom, using all pegs, double thickness, and I'm making it long enough to wear as a wrap if I want. It's so thick I could fold it up and use it as a pillow if I needed to... and so soft I just might! ;) My daughter asked me today if I would make her one of the snoods, and when I asked her if she wanted it to wear to Faire, she said sure, but she also wanted to wear it to school!
I have a question... I've never used the round loom, but I am going to go pick one up today...well, the kit that has the 4 (I believe) different sizes. For a mans head, which loom do you use to make a hat and also about how many balls of yarn do you use?
I've already got it down when I want to make a scarf, I use two of the softer decorative yarns and then get one of the big bundles of the basic yarn...but now that I want to do hats, I have no idea how many things of yarn to expect (though I would assume after one or two times of making one, I'll know)
It depends on the hat you want to make, and the yarn you use. I like to use one of the much thicker yarns, such as a boucle, for my hats, just because it's warmer in the end, and I can usually get a couple of hats from a skein. I use the green, or the second largest loom, for a regular hat, since the red is the size for a smallish child.
I typically use 55 yrds for a hat. That is ~7". I do not put a band on, I like the curled look. It fits me with room to spare. I would make one for yourself and then use that to see if it will fit your man. I would make one slightly longer for my guy. Also I have come to prefer the double thickness, so that would be 110 yrds!
Thank you, ladies, for your help. I picked up the pack of 4 round looms last week and have been hat crazy since! I have made 2 adorable little hats (one with brim, one with the curl on the bottom and a pompom on top ;D) for my nephew's first birthday coming up, plus a little matching scarf, 2 hats for myself (again, one curled, one brimmed), a matching scarf and hat set for my son (hat brimmed...I bought...what I suspect to be a knifty knitter...hat last year at the festival for my son that is curled, so I decided to make him one that has the brim) and now I'm working on another one for myself! I will be making one for my husband once he picks out a black/grey combo he likes...he is very particular on the color... I actually like the ones I have made more than the one I bought my son last year. I have been doubling my rounds on the loom so the knit is tighter and thicker, and just all around looks nicer, I think. The purchased hat was just done with single loops, and I can see how much looser it is. Besides, now I can really get creative with the colors I want. I've put a couple little knitted flowers onto the first hat I made for myself. I'm addicted to doing the hats.
They're lots of fun, aren't they, and they go quite fast when you get the rhythm going! Can't wait to see some pics of your work!
