Title: Photo shoot!!!!!
Post by: Skip on July 26, 2010, 10:27:33 PM
Would like to know if any of you all are interested in doing a photo shoot after the faire is over?  I live in Loveland and have talked to Laney about doing one in Fort Collins.  Would love to have anybody else who lives up this way join in the public spectacle!!!  Would probably look to do this sometime in September when it has cooled off a little bit.

For those of you, and I am sure this is a majority of the Rennie's out there, from the Denver area I would also really like to shoot around the capitol building area.

If anybody is interested please let me know so we can plan this out to make some professional portraits with you in your garb.  Also if you have any ideas feel free to share them and we can all hash out what will work the best.

I really think this would be a fun time!!!

I'm down!!  I live in Greeley so Loveland/Ft Collins is not too far of a drive for me.  Sounds like fun!

Wouldn"t this just be the bomb... I would paint for an opportunity to work with a professional photographer.  I will be in Pittsburgh for the faire there.  I'm so dissappointed that I will miss it.  Maybe a winter project???     :D

Zoe is a great subject to photo!  I get great photos from her all the time.  She rocks the camera!

Last year's 'Big Shot' was taken after cannon on the last day.  Those of you who'd like to do this year's shot, just make sure we all know you want to take THE BIG PICTURE, and have the equipment ready to go for the shot.  I very much liked last year's shot, and hope that this year's will be at least as good.

I do so love you all--

I will be down there on Saturday (this was changed) and would love to advertise your painting skills on my round billboard.

I don't know when you are here but the September thing is just an idea and not set in stone so please make suggestions that hopefully will work for as many people as possible.

Also if one shoot doesn't work for everybody then we can always do a second one and I like the idea of a winter snow shoot.

Well you know Toki and I are up for it as we talked of it. I am trying hard to get Lady Francesca involved as well and her family.

We will miss you on Sunday as Toki and I decided Sunday is a NO for us.

Talk soon.

I would love to do this. Not only as my pirate self but as the photographer in me. I could even talk to ill repute and see if we can get a few of them.

On a side note i am trying to get a photo shoot with the fairies at the botanic garden in august but haven't heard back yet from the one i have a connection with. If it dosn't pan out with the fairies i still would love to do this if people are interested.

a few things to think about in september is the Highland festival in estes park one weekend then another is the faire in sante fe and the buccaneer bash. Not sure how many are doing any of these activities but then again also some good opportunities for some photo shooting.

Zoe is a great subject to photo!  I get great photos from her all the time.  She rocks the camera!

Done on the first part (that is assuming you think my work is up to par) and so true on the second part - gotta love her new avatar!!!

Looks like I lied again about which day I would be at faire to take pics.  Since my wife is coming with me she wants to go on Saturday so we have a day to recuperate.  Of course being the man of the house I put down my foot and am doing exactly what I was told  ;).

A little more on the photo shoot - If enough people get involved in this we will set aside a whole day (probably a Saturday) so we have plenty of time.  I know many of you have more than one outfit so hopefully we can find someplace where you can change and we can get pictures of you in each one.

I would love to have (at least for the Denver shoot) plenty of people so that we could have garbed "extra's" in the background for a possibly more authentic look.

I was just down there the other day and the area between the capital building and the city and county building looks to be good spot for a shoot.  There is an area that has two curved columned areas with an arch in the middle of each.  If your going down colfax it curves around this spot.

The difficult part here is that there is really nothing in our area that "fits" the period.  We can work around this and I think still take some amazing shots and have a blast doing it but this will need to be taken into consideration.  I will check if it would be possible to do this inside of someplace like the capital building or the city and county but I wouldn't think so.  Plus we will need enough room to set-up lights and everything else.  I don't mind blocking an area off for a while we just need to be prepared to have to move if someone complains.

There are some very ornate old churches that may work also so again anybody from down that way that knows the area better please chime in and let me know if anything will work better.

Must have taken a while to write this since two more comments came through!

come along and enjoy, see if the fairies can join us.  That Botanic Garden idea is fantastic for them, what a great idea.

Duly noted, again the time and place are up in the air right now so the more input we get the better.

I don't know what area you are in but I am trying to get shoots set-up in both Fort Collins and Denver so please try to make it.  Also I looked for you the last time I was at faire but missed you, can you remind me where you are cause I would really like to get some pics this Saturday?

I have a wedding to shoot right at the same time frame as the scottish festival so I am not sure which day I can make it.  Will look into that and let you know.

Agreed and anyone and everyone is welcome to bring their own camera's.  Since we will have lights and possibly some other things as needed set up I will have to limit access to those things.  We have tried to shoot sharing lights (these are studio lights) and it always leads to things getting messed up and shots missed.  However, I will willingly share the digital files with whoever wants them.  If anyone wants professional prints I will have to charge for those as it costs me to have them printed ( sorry don't mean to be a downer on that note ).

If you haven't done any studio work or worked with lights before then I will be more than happy to teach you what I know.  This shoot does have it's problems to overcome but those are mostly dealing with keeping with the period in a modern setting and possibly (hopefully) lots of people showing up for this and us getting in trouble for being a public nuisance (would so make my day  ;D ;D).

Keep 'em coming and we'll have to pull a permit to make this happen  :o :o :o  ;D ;D ;D.

First off can anybody tell that I'm stuck in the office all day and bored to death!!!!

As for your pictures you've done some nice work.  Now as for how your doing that really depends on your style or what you want out of your pictures.  I tend to lean in a more artistic direction so the blurred backgrounds, colors and composition are very important to me.  This leads to lots of other issues like shallow depth of field so very hard to nail the focus.  This is made even worse when your trying to take the shot on the fly, on a hill with a bad ankle (could I get some cheese with that whine?  ;D).  There are about a thousand other things to consider of course but I am always up for photog shop talk with anyone and am always glad to help in any way I can.

If I could only give you one piece of advice though I would say the three most important parts of subject photography is background, background and of course background.  Trying to isolate the subject and make it/them stand out is really the key.  Distracting bg's are just that distracting and something to be avoided if at all possible.  This makes spontaneous photography pretty difficult and really changes the way you look at things.

Now when it comes to lights (off camera lighting), be prepared for your whole outlook to change and your photography to never be the same!  It makes a huge difference - like nothing else you can do - but it comes with a big price.  I have a very hard time shooting without lights anymore because of how much better I know the shot can be.  It really boils down to controlling the light in a photograph and after all that's all a photo really is - captured light.

Again bored to death and way off topic but hey, I got the time.  Luckily my work day is almost over.

If you are there on Saturday walk with me for a while and we can talk.  I don't know how much you know about the mechanics of photography either and it will be easier and quicker to do this face to face.

Really have to stop, I just erased as much as I had already written above.  Should have pm'd this anyway - sorry for the distraction folks now lets get back to the subject of a photo shoot.

WHO'S UP FOR ONE OF THOSE?

We're behind original schedule by about a week, partially due to the fact that the original Realtor just *poof* went out of business. So, yes, I'll be at CoRF this weekend, but probably only Sunday.

I will find you, even if I have to enlist the help of the the gracious Blushing, so I can meet you and get some pics.

I propose that we schedule the North (Fort Collins) shoot for sometime during the Scottish Festival run.  I found out today that we have two weddings, one on the 3rd and one on the 11th.  Anything other than those two days will work for me and it would sure be great if you could join us for the fun.  I think this group will be small enough that we could pull it off during the evening hours so we could even do it during the week if that works.

Everyone from up here please let me know if this will or won't work as I really want to have as many as possible show up.

Yea it looks like that won't be a good time as I also wanted to attend and I have a wedding to shoot on the 11th.  If anybody has a preference please post your ideas for a date and also a location.  Thought about downtown but Laney mentioned an old church nearby that would also work.

Couple of old churches. the one on Remington and I think Magnolia and then the other is the Catholic church with arches. Any other's you know of that look Medieval/Renaissance or places that work? Might I suggest we also make a stop IN garb at Coppersmiths or better yet New Belgium. new belgium has free samples and their beer is the best.

Sounds picture worthy  8)!!!

As for our photo shoot (s) I think there are three possibilities.

1.  We try to stay within the Renaissance theme (period looking surroundings).  This is obviously going to be difficult as to the best of my knowledge Colorado's contribution to that was teepee's and buffalo  ::)!  We can try to shoot at old, preferable stone buildings, and blur out the background as much as possible to take out the modern influence.  I think the more people we have at the shoot as "extra's" in the bg will also help with this.

2.  We head right into the middle of old town (or downtown Denver for the south shoot) and don't even hide the fact that all of you stand out like a sore thumb.

3.  A nature setting (mountain park or something like that) where we can completely remove anything modern from the scene.

Personally, I like all three and I think we could do both 1 and 2 pretty easily in a single shoot.  That would be the way I would like to go with this - I really like the idea of showing off all of you in front of the masses in your great garb.  Shooting this in a crowded place would also make for some pretty good advertising for the faire me thinks.

I am looking at my schedule to see what works best for me.  I will be very flexible on this as I do want to try to include as many as we possibly can!!!

As of right now the only thing for certain is the Fort Collins shoot will be on a weekend evening (the pictures will look best if we do this after six).  It will have to be after the weekend of the 11th.  I would like to do the Fort Collins shoot first so we can work things out with a smaller group before tackling what I hope is a very large group in Denver.

Please add to this and let me know how you all feel about the details for the shoot.  I will want to have this as planned out as possible before we take our first shot.

Thanks for all the response and support for this idea, we can really do something cool here!!!!

Oh wanted to make sure all the photogs remember that mikes camera is having a photo contest for faire. You have to be on facebook and upload it there. Me i am more interested in second and third place since first is a camera i more then likely won't use but second and third is money for there shop.

Also they are going to do there fall colors contest once again.

Hmm if i go to the highland festival i may take a drive through the national park at sometime to try and get some pics if others might be interested.

Great to hear, haven't set a date yet - am hoping to talk to some of you this Saturday to discuss this in person.  I am also waiting to hear about one more wedding we are supposed to be shooting in September.  I don't want to get this set up and find out that is when they are going to need us to shoot that.

Would love to have you show up to both - heck anybody is more than welcome at either or both!!!!

Sir Garath, I don't have a Facebook account and after Laney said that about the copyright stuff I haven't even considered opening one.  I need to check that out and see what the details are but for now I am staying away.  I am not sure that my style of photography would do very good in a contest like that anyway.  Thanks for the heads up though, appreciate the info.

i don't worry about it since i'm not a professional photog. I do this cause its fun and relaxes me. If i did it for profit you wouldn't see my pics unless you was on certain sites for stock photography that you have to pay per pic to download.

got to remember any pic sent in for contests like these you are giving them rights to use them in any way they see fit.

Cool, I will get with you on Saturday to go over a couple of things with ya.

In the interest of finding dates that work/don't work, the weekend of September 18-19 is the Santa Fe Faire (which you should all come to, btw) so quite a few of us, myself included, will be out of town.

I'd be in for this! I just finished making a baldric for my basket hilt claymore that I'd like to get  nice picture of. I'm in the Edgewater Celtic Harvest Festival the weekend of the 18th and 19th with the Renaissance Scots. Not wasting my time with Estes... Most other weekends are good for me, though. This sounds like something that would be fun to be involved in!

Denver shoot

Ok I still can't set date's for sure (still waiting on that last wedding) but after talking to some at the faire last weekend I have decided to push this out to the first two weeks of October.  I went down earlier this week and walked around the Civic Center Park in downtown Denver and that is a perfect spot for this.  Also if anybody is up for a few shots on the 16th street mall then it is close enough to that that we could walk over and do that too!!

I would like to get some feedback on whether you all would rather shoot this on a Saturday or Sunday.  One of the main problems I see (other than that many people gathering at the park at once - I am going to check and make sure that is not going to be a problem) is parking for this many people.  On Saturday it costs $1 an hour for the meters but there are several parking lots that charge $5 a day.   If we shoot on Sunday then parking is free but depends if everybody is up for shooting on the last day of their weekend.

I would like this to run into the evening possibly so we might be able to get some shots with the lights in the park on.

I also thought that people might want to get shots in more than one outfit but I didn't see any good spots to change so that probably won't be feasible.

As for the Fort Collins shoot I would actually like to get that done by the end of August if possible (again depends on wedding).

For those of you going to show up for that one please let me know if that will work or if putting it off till the last two weeks of September is better.

Denver shoot...

Either day is OK; but, prefer Sunday given the choice.

For Fort Collins, can make any Saturday work.

Last two weekends of September are bad for me; one I'll be in Santa Fe and the other I'll be working.  Earlier is better I guess.

When in doubt my opinion is ALWAYS a Sunday. Saturdays find me stuck at school until 5. (And I bet you can imagine how happy they were at two months of Saturday absences....)

I honestly don't know how many people are still checking in here but hopefully most of you are.  I have been wrestling with my schedule and have finally ready to call  the dates for the photo shoots.

It really came down to when I had available to do the shoot.  I was going to shoot the first two weekends of October but then the 9th and 10th filled up.

So before anything else comes along to mess things up I am going to set the dates.

First Saturday in October (the 2nd) we will do the Fort Collins shoot.  I am figuring on everybody showing up around 5:30 to 6:00 p.m.  I want to shoot at the church first and then if everybody is up for it we can move to Old Town and finish up there.
If those of you who are planning on coming will please post so here so I can get an idea of what to expect.  I am really hoping for at least 10 people showing up for this one.

As for the Denver shoot I am going to call that one for the 3rd Sunday (the 17th) in October.  The same thing here, if anybody planning on coming to this can post so here then we will know how to plan the day.

The 16th street mall is only two blocks or so away from Civic Center Park and I would love to start shooting there.  I don't know how many people to expect so not sure when to start shooting, will leave that up in the air for now.

We went down and scouted out both areas and think they both will give us great images.

I am sorry to those of you who won't be able to make it on these dates.  I really struggled trying to accommodate everybody and finally realized it would never happen.  Also as I said to start these are now the only two dates I have open.  I don't think anything big enough to change this will come up since it's only a month away.

So I am comfortable with setting these dates and sticking to them.

I really hope there will be more of you show up then I know what to do with (don't worry we'll make it happen no matter what).  On that note let's get together, make this thing happen and have a blast doing it!!!

On a side note not sure if anyone has ever done the photo tour at the zoo but i loved it and try to do it atleast once a year.

You can either go around by yourself or with the class that has the photographer for the zoo with you.

Well it has become apparent that there aren't very many people checking in here and while I hate to, because of having paid shoots that I can schedule and only a couple of people saying they will show up for either shoot, I am going to have to cancel both.  I think that now is the worst time to try this as the excitement of Faire has worn off and everybody is back to their everyday lives.

Maybe we can try this in the spring or next summer before next season begins.

Sorry to those who said they would show up but really needed a much larger response to justify canceling or pushing off paid shoots when there are a lot of senior's still needing there pic's taken.

Have a great Winter everybody

I would not say Lack of interest, just bad days.l As I stated I will be working both that Saturday and Sunday. On top of that we have plans for when I do get off on Saturday. Tom and I have compnay every other Saturday that has been scheduled for over 2 years now with only a break during faire, it's our only social time with friends. We would love to do it, it just needs to mesh with our free time as well as yours.
