I`am doing a aduition this weekend for an all womens pirate comedy team the aduitions consists of not a script but being able to do improv. so if you can shoot me some things so i can pratice improving them. I was talking to cat and beeboy last night in the chat room, they sugessted this might help so let the improve begin. If you can help please do. and give me your comments of what you think on how I did. ;D :o
There are quite a number of drills you can use to learn improv such as "Yes and", "I heard it said", and the list goes on. All these are designed to teach you to build your improv skills. Problem is you need a bunch of people to do these with. The Virginia Renaissance Faire that I am on cast at is a mostly improv show with very few scripted lines so we have to learn how to be very improv oriented. I would also strongly recommend you get the book by Gary Izzo entitled: The Art of Play: The New Genre of Interactive Theatre as that is the definitive work on the subject from what I have been told. Good luck to you.
Thank you Master James for all your help . I will look for the book and been bugging everyone to improv with me. ;D
My biggest problem with impru aroving was that I was too stiff...it took me alot of time lossen up...so I guess just saying...make sure you are comfy in your own skin!
Greetings Darcconia yes that is a very good idea, geeting comfy in my own skin. How did you loosen up I`am just a little ok a lot nervous about the adution on this sat June the 7th. I`am trying to let go of me and get comfy. I`am very comfy as me in my own skin I just don`t know if I have what it takes to to improv. I have done alot of scripts and I can fellow the lines well but improv is a new deal. For my aduition is going to be all improv. and no scripts. they are just going to shoot me things and see how much witt and improv I can do. but any way thanks for help and the time you took to read this have a great day ;D
Be a child, albeit with a Piratical outlook, I suppose.
A child can pick up a stick and it becomes:
... a cane, they're wounded/elderly
... a gun, they're a Soldier/SWAT/Cowboy
... a sword, they're a Musketeer/Pirate
... an oar, they're a Sailor
Then there's the 'out-there' answers:
... a giant needle, they're Cobbler's elves/Miniaturised
... a propeller, they're on/are a plane/helicopter
... a periscope, they're on/are a submarine
... a bone, they're a Paleontologist/Cannibal/Zombie
Don't forget the Absurd:
... a snake, they're Steve Irwin/Cleopatra
... a cross, they're crucified
... a dimentional doorway, they're Rod Serling
... a friend, they're crazy
There are many categories of Improvisation, but they can usually be categorised as follows:
Logical/Linear
Logical/Non-linear
Illogical/Linear
Illogical/Non-linear
Pick a focus and try to work with it. Then pick another focus and work with that one. Try them all until you find the one that suits your character. Yes, you can change your focus depending on the situation.
VIII, thank you so much for your help. I think I caught what you are trying to say. If I see it and I pick it up it can be anything I see in mind. I will be aduitioning for the part of a pirate, a pirate on a all womens comedy pirateteer team., so I need to think like a pirate, and then act like one, anwser like one. I need to really see this charcter in my mind the for who she is. She is a pirate who is funny and full of witt. Thanks for all your help once again. ;D
