Title: What's the most you've ever spent on a meal?
Post by: Valiss on August 23, 2010, 06:05:41 PM

As in a meal for two, not a group bill.  I'm talking about a meal and maybe some drinks, but NOT a bill jacked up in price simply by ordering some exotic wine.

What did you order? Where was it, and was it worth it?

Probably about a little over $100 each with drinks, I don't remember a specific one, but never been disappointed when we have spent high bucks. -Maybe an appetizer or something was not quite what we hoped, so we would try something else the next time if we came back to the same place, but overall the meal was always good.

It's probably a good thing the wife has had a gastric bypass, otherwise our occasional sushi night would be much more expensive.

$100.03  (or just $0.03, depending on how you look at it- the husband and I had a $100 gift certificate...)

We went out to supper for our wedding with another couple. I believe it was $92 per person not including drinks, which was wine. This was a restuarante at the MGM Grand hotel in Los Vegas were we got Married (no we did not get married by Elvis or Alien :)). It was an (expensive) sampler of steaks, sides, and deserts, wine w/ ever course of the meal... LOL, the most fanciest dinner I've had and will probably ever have.

On our first anniversary in 1973, we went to a nice little restaurant and I think we spent about $70. In 2010 dollars, that's over $350. That's probably the most I've ever spent.

Disneyland - 2006.  Lee and I were celebrating our 6th wedding anniversary at the Napa Rose - we ordered the chef's special 5 course meal and added the wine package on.  I think it was around $300 to $350 for both us.  But it was the best meal!  One of the wines we liked so much we joined the vineyards wine club!   ;D

Most would be the 7 course tasting menu ($175, pp without wine) at a local "gastropub".   The food was incredible, however the behavior of every single person, including the chef/owner was so atrocious I won't give it airspace....

however, to put a different spin on the question and turn it into a game I have played for umpteen years.... the most incredible meal "who cared about the cost" I ever had? Adele's, Carson City Nv, september 1984   Cajun softshell appetizer followed veal and lobster in a late harvest reisling sauce.  26 years later, I can still taste that meal....

Where did you go? Was it worth it?

For my honeymoon in San Francisco, we went to dinner at a place called supperclub. It was dinner with a "show". You paid for the experience, not the food. (It was okay, but nothing to write home about.) Total after tip, I think we spent about $300.

Well I've yet to have much experience in this realm but for my 17th birthday my dad and I went to Medieval times and got the full package, with reserved front row seating and all the special promo type stuff. It was like $200 I believe. Totally worth it, since our knight (red and yellow) won the first contest and I got the first rose :) I'm pretty sure it was planned, since we got the extra special birthday package or whatever, but who cares!

As for Mehan's "most incredible meal regardless of cost" thing...stuffed pizza from Giordano's in Chicago...I would pay to go back to chicago just for that pizza...(btw we drove straight to chicago from Stephenville, TX...about an hour southwest of ft. worth...it was a 20 hour drive, and we're planning to do it again)

"Most expensive meal," and "best meal, who cares about the cost" are the same for me.

In Hawaii, on Kuai for my honeymoon.  We ate at a restaurant that I am now blanking on the name of (will come back and edit when I remember).  It ended up being around $90 a person, I think.  It was the best fish I have ever had, and when we eventually go back, we WILL be eating there again. :)

Medieval Times is also awesome.  I went to one once on a class trip, and have been wanting to go back ever since (hasn't happened yet, because I don't live very close to one :()

For that kind of money, perhaps you went to Roys?

Ruth's Chris Steakhouse had a $100 gift card from work so thought the meal would be free still ended up spending $100 out of pocket.  And didn't get that $80 a shot 100 year old scotch.    It was a good meal but worth $200?  Not really I good steaks that good on my own grill.

There is a restaurant in Burlingame, CA that is a reservations only establishment.

Thanksgiving 2002, while assigned to the Bay Area with DHS, I took the gf at the time out to eat.  Not knowing it required reservations, we walked in and asked for a seat.  They declined at first.  Once they found out I was DHS, we had our drinks comp'ed, a table for two in a private section, a personal waitress, and a few other ammenities.  The ticket was for over $800, but they only charged me $150.  Still the highest 2-person meal ever.

I recently took the fiance, her daughter, her parents, her brother and his boyfriend, her sister and her boyfriend, my brother and his girlfriend, and my parents to an Irish Pub for Mothers' Day.  Cost $130.  Worth every penny!

My most expensive would have to be at Primavista. My now husband took me there to propose to me. Ended up at about $150 for the two of us.

This place wouldn't be by any chance called the "British Bankers Club" would it?

No.  It was Gulliver's or similar.  Just up the street from some elephant bar.
