I have yards of a shot gold/ coppery and purple silk that has been rolling around my house and traveling places. Mostly because I have not found the trim of other complimentary fabrics to complete the ahhhhhaa, it must be a.... moment. The link / picture is as close as I can find on the net to the color.
Other than purple, what would you suggest? This will hopefully be a Royal gown. I would really like a complimentary second color.
http://www.bangkokthaisilk.com/servlet/the-399/Gold-Shot-Violet-100-pct-/Detail It is more copper in life ....
I know it sounds odd, but try sage green. It usually goes well with coppery colors. You can get a small sample and look at it in outdoor lighting.
Why not actually combine it with purple? I think it would give a wonderful shine to the copper tone. Eva Andersson did that combination for a Swedish/German noble dress she recently did, and I loved it:

I'd also start by finding something in the same purple. My first thought is a solid (like velvet), but I think even a brocade/damask would work, since the shot silk is a solid.
Secondary to that, what about black? You could then overlay almost any trim (I'm thinking something jeweled) with it.
Do you know what you want to do with it yet? You might start by picking the SORT of gown/garb it wants to be, and decide from there. If you wanted to make royal robes of some sort, for instance, they'd look absolutely smashing with white fur. But a doublet or doublet bodice would look great with chevron trim in deep green.
Yesterday I heard the designer from HGTV's "Color Confidential" give this brilliant advice: "Any two colors go together if you put them together." The trick is adding the layers that make it all come together.
A sage green or a bronzeish gold. Either way the gown is gonna be fab!
Awww Shucks Girl... You can just give it to me and problem solved! It is amazing... how bout a pumpkin orange? I love purple and orange and that might pick up the copper.
Thank you ladies. The reasoning behind not the purple, is that I have seen it used a few times (like in the beautiful picture), and wanted to do something different. I will still need to go with some purple, but didn't want to do an over all piece. And the black I was thinking for an accent on the coppery.
I didn't think of the green... hum I already have some cut out... let me look
Amy... uhm... no sorry... you will be better dressed already!
I love it when you guys all start thinking!
I'm picturing a rich brown velvet, maybe a rich caramel or a warm chocolate, and pearls.
oooh that looks great in my head!
A rich chocolate color, with the carmel would be fab with some gold tone freshwater pearls!
As soon as I move and un-unpack all the fabric I will take pictures of all the combination I will. Thank you
I always believe in 3 colors. since you have purple and gold why not black? Accenting the whole? That purple/gold I have as sleeves for one of my tourney gowns. And it looks awesome with the gold, if you did gold damask or a green/gold mixture like this one!

I think white or ivory or Black as the trim would be smashing for any of these!
Cilean
Cilean, that link to the purple & gold damask (http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-67726670039122_2116_103320742) goes to the image only. Do you have the correct site?

I used a similar fabric for lining a few years ago....
Thank you for the links, Cilean.
This is the most difficult color combination to find.... I can not even find a purple to match, if I went that way.
The sage fabric that I have, made the coppery/purple look doudy. So, I may need to find a differnt tone of green. A dark blue looked okay with it, and a marroon-ish (more towards the purple) did eh. Out of all the boxes of fabric that I own, nothing is making it pop or stand up. Any light creams make the fabric look washed out.
I was going to use black as an accent, but not as a color, but I have have to.
Pinks, and oranges are out... I'm running out of colors
OK, what about.... blood red?
Grey? Peacock blue? Chocolate brown? Light brown--caramel or tan?
That is sooo pretty.
When we did Caroline's dress (it was a goldish/pomegrant silk) we had to take it to the fabric store and hold it up to everything.
I have a similar fabric in a sort of parrot blue and gold. I did the same. I've found just the slightest change of tone makes a difference with this kind of "changeable" fabric.
I thought I found the perfect fabric online...... It's only $230 a yard. I think it has real gold in it. ;)
