I think I've only had one beer on that list: Negra Modelo. I didn't try it a second time!

I love the review for #1-"Bad aftertaste, rancid mouth. Not fit for students, bums or the desperate for a drink. Nothing but horrible taste and booze. I am less of a person for having consumed this."
On the Best Beers list-I dont' even like beer, but I'm intrigued by something calls "Surly Darkness"

In a book I received years ago as I recovered from surgery, the beer that they listed as the worst was one that I had tasted before. It was called Texas Pride. I hope Texas has more pride these days.

I read the list to Theater freinds of mine.  In the top 10  even THEY wouldn't touch them.  If they were in the 10-20 range they said they might touch them if they were free.  But that does say something when even broke collage age theater students won't even touch the beer.

My dear Dad, may he rest in peace, was not particular what kind of beer he drank (my father-in-law [who fed me the Texas Pride] was the same way). Whatever was on sale was what ended up in the fridge. He had a source for damaged-can Old Milwaukee, so that was a regular thing. If I was going to drink beer at his house, I would bring my own. I have a palate attuned to quality beers. I cannot, and will not, drink swill, free or not.

If it says "light" on the label, it does not find its way into this ever-growing stomach of mine. I know Miller Lite is a favourite for many, but it actually makes me sick—one drink and I have a killer headache—so I have to stay away from it regardless.

The worst beers I have tasted tend to be regional and craft beers, but by the same token, some of the best U.S. beers I've had have been regional and craft beers. There is one local restaurant that has its own brewery—I think it was the first to do so—and for years its beers have tasted soapy to me, an indication of an infection in the beer. Nobody else seems to notice or care, but I home-brewed for a number of years and made some quality brews.

No offence to Texans, but the worst beers I've had (so far) were Texas beers.

That's probably because most of the family breweries were bought out in the 50's and 60's by mega-breweries who dumbed down the original German dark and semi-dark beers to carbonated beverages like Miller Lite. You probably would have liked Grand Prize beer.

Are there any of those left in Texas? I'd love to try one next visit! Being German, I do like my beer! Also, are there any good German restaurants anywhere near Scarby?

Absolutely outstanding.  Surly is a local brewery here, and this is a VERY limited edition run.  A few people may get one or two bottles, that's the limit.  Most places sell out within a few minutes after offering if for sale.

For the longest time I didn't think I liked beer because all I had tried were things like Lone Star, Bud light and such. Then I discovered Shiner. A Texas beer for sure and one with a great taste.
Next thing I discovered was my Lovely Lady (who is a complete beer snob) who introduced me to the many many wonderful craft brews our state has to offer.
Don't judge us by the corporate owned swill  just by the true Texas brews and you will find a wonderful array of flavors that will surprise you I am sure. I am willing to bet Wisconson isn't exactly proud of some of their national selling beers either (Milwaukee's Best? Milller anything? gag)
I will be at the Austin Beerfest, i challenge anyone to come there and try some truly amazing beers.

*Of course all that being said... I would still rather have rum given the choice lol*

And a lot of it is culture.  One time at a rugby tourny, I was drinking beer with a guy from Austrialia.  I told him how I liked Leopard (a New Zealand beer) and he likened it to horse pi**.  But he loved Bud.  Very strange....
Now I like Saint Arnold Lawnmower if I can't get Bass or Guiness.  My personal worst - Kirin.

All of the mass produced beers taste awful to me.
I hate beer, and as a general rule I drink wine, but I allowed myself to sample a dark ale in Inverness, Scotland called '80 schilling' (I think)  in the interest of drinking 'Scottish' things while in Scotland.   It had a rich and smoky (like a burnt barrel)  taste,  no carbonation, a nice coffee color and was served ice cold.  It was not the crap sold here in the US under the '80 schilling'  name.
In Germany (where I lived for 3 years in the service)  There is a special dark beer sold during the Christmas season that has a sweetish caramel flavor with a smoky aftertaste that reminds me of burning leaves in the fall.
Other than these two kinds, I will not touch beer.

I liked the comment.."Given the choice between Miller Lite and soda... I would choose soda... and I don't like soda"

My top 5 are Guiness stout, Ugly Pug, Shiner Black, Shiner Bock and Fat Tire.

Stoney is pretty bad, Duquesne beer I think has to be the worst I ever drink Rolling Rocks is a close second.

One of the best was Esquire beer a local Western PA beer.

Donna...it's a local brew out of Ft. Worth....Albertsons and most all liquor stores in the DFW area carry it.

On Saturdays...they due brewery tours for (I think) $10...includes a pint glass that you get to keep.... and they fill it up with 3 of their brews for tasting.

When we did it...they had a band and BBQ sandwiches....really a fun Saturday.
It's in the hospital district in Ft. Worth

I found the address for Rahr's brewery. The tour is from 1-3 on Saturdays. $7 for the tour and tastings. We're planning on going September 24 and sample me some Ugly Pug!
They say its $2.50 off the tour price if you bring back the glass.  ;)

From what I heard many years ago, that is what the "bock" beers are...that at the end of the year, they go through a process of cleaning the brew vessels and that the sediment left from the previous year's brewing somehow is used to make the final batch. I've seen some foreign labels bottle a bock for sale in this country, and they usually show up at the end of the year. Whether what I heard is actually true, I don't know...never bothered to research it.

I'm surprised didn't think many would remember Duquesne Beer or know of Esquire.  My dad drink Esquire and I always tried to have one in his memory when I visited PA.  Haven't found it the last few times I've been up have guest that it has been discontinued.

SirRichardBear, my dad drank Stoney's, my grandfather drank Esquire and I don't know anyone who drank Duquesnse.  Jones Brewery no longer makes Esquire.  But you can get a can here:

http://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.blackmarketantiques.com/esquire-premium-beer-jones-brewing-smithton-p-6774.html&sa=U&ei=9698TsD0DsG5tgeomsFb&ved=0CBwQFjAE&usg=AFQjCNFaz-euv7pEkhfKri94aRJ61BHrNw

I don't remember the last time Esquire was sold, all I remember were the 7 oz pony bottles in Grandpap's fridge.

Normally this isn't a thread I would jump into as I am not a beer drinker, I find the stuff in general to be revolting.
That is until my boyfriend introduced me to the Heffeweisen he fell in love with when he was stationed in Germany.
Great stuff.

Then the other day we watched a whole "Modern Marvels" episode on the history channel about beer
and I learned that back in the day all Ales used to be made without hops
and I learned that hops is what makes beer bitter.

So we spent 30 minutes in the beer isle of the wine and spirits store this afternoon and they don't carry any gruit ale (thats the ale without the hops).
Can anyone reccommend anything that is very very low on the hops content??

I figure stores don't carry gruit ale as the hops is what gives beer its shelf life and without them its probably hard to keep stocked without it going bad.

The two worst beers I remember ever drinking was during my college days while living in a frat house, it was called Crazy Horse and it's evil twin Jim Bowie.  They came in 40 oz. bottles only, and you could get them about a buck twenty-five a bottle.  Some others that also come to mind is Colt 45, Old English, and Magnum.

Oh and after reading some of the previous post regarding Texas Beer, the only one I remember ever having during my brief stay there was called Lonestar Beer.  I use to get them at huge red barn nearby where you just simply drove your truck through and the people who worked there just loaded the back of your vehicle up with your order.

Tastes do definitely differ...what Auryn doesn't care for in a beer is something I quite enjoy. Several of us got a sampler at Rockhouse Brewpub in Castle Rock at the RenDezvous MnG. They had one really hoppy beer that I totally liked, and everyone else turned their nose up at it.  I like a bold taste in beers.

Chainshot, Lone Star is nasty. That what was served at the Astrodome when I went there many years ago. I thought it was going to kill me...

Yeah it was pretty nasty Merlin LOL!  And that was also the day I learned from my Texan friends a new word, "picnic" .  It's where you and your buddies after getting the beer, to just simply pull over at the side of the some lonely road somewhere, and simply get hammered.

I'm not a beer drinker, but I loved the Nelson's Blood porter brewed in shop at the Lord Nelson in Sydney.  No television,  band, or people gabbing on their cell phones.  Just excellent dark, chocolate-y, coffee tasting porter.  With pie & mash?  Couldn't be better.

Your darker beers, porters, stouts, black lagers, will generally be less hoppy. Stay away from ales as they tend to have the most.

I am no fan of heffeweizens, especially with the sediment. They generally taste very yeasty to me, and just do not suit my palette.

I think Bud Lite is probably one of the nastiest swills I have ever tasted. Honestly, aside from Yuengling, if it is sold in a can it is the foulest of foul.

According to a survey of people in over 80 countries, America is #1 is producing swill beer. (http://www.titanicawards.com/2009/06/16/which-country-makes-the-worlds-worst-beer/)
With China coming in a distant second.
I haven't seen any Natural Ice in a long time, but it was so bad that I'm not surprised. It had an slightly mineral oil taste that stayed with you. I thinks that's what the beer experts might call over-hoppy.

I tried a really dark beer- I think dogfish head something or other- eewww so nasty.
we tried something called Midas Touch, it was actually pretty good.

Does anyone have any recipes  for some gruit ale??
We are moving into a house with a large garage in a month or so
So I will be able to make my first batches of mead to take advantage of the winter cold, might as well try to make some gruit.

Auryn, Dogfish Head is highly touted as one of the best brewers in America! But all of their brews would not suit everyone's taste. My Girlfriend does not like hoppy beers, but does enjoy the chocolate and cream stouts, and most of the pumpkin beers that come out in the fall.

I did try the Ugly Pug. It was pretty good. It's not a stout, but a black lager so its toasty without being chewy. Also good was the Oktoberfest and the Texas Red.
I was not so emamoured of the Stormcloud pale ale. It was very tart and hoppy. I don't think it qualified for worst beer, but DH took it from me and finished it before I went to dump it.
