Are there any of those left in Texas? I'd love to try one next visit! Being German, I do like my beer! Also, are there any good German restaurants anywhere near Scarby?
Well, not really. The closest one is
Greenwood's German European - www.greenwoodsgerman.com
3522 Blue Bonnet Circle, Fort Worth - (817) 921-6777
Trumer Brauerei, owned by San Antonio-based Gambrinus and brewed in Berkeley, Calif., won gold in the German-style Pilsener category for its Trumer Pils. But its a long way from Scarby and no longer family owned.
Since the Spoetzel family is back at the Spoetzel brewery in Shiner, its products have begun improving in taste and character.

Food! A favourite subject!

When in Waxahachie, we do like to make at least one breakfast at the Chisholm Grill down on the square. Seems like it changes hands with about the frequency of our trips to Texas, but we always enjoy. SOP is to eat there on the way to opening canon...

We've had good meals at both Campuzanos and Don Jose's, both on US 77 north of US 287, and both within a few minutes of Scarborough. What else is really good down there?

I strongly recommend a side trip to Catfish Plantation.  It is located in Waxahachie, not on the Mile o' Food outside of Waxahachie.  Even if you don't like catfish, they have the BEST fried chicken you'll ever eat. :)

And it is haunted.

That could be fun...I've never run into a haunted chicken before...  ;)  I looked it up right after Lys1022 posted... looks like it could be a blast! ...and good fried chicken is—well, let's just say it makes my tummy very happy!

I'm drawing a blank on the name, but there's an English style pub in downtown Waxahachie that has a pretty good menu and, by milord's reckoning, a most respectable beer list too.

College Street Pub (http://collegestreetpub.com/) is 2 or 3 blocks from the downtown square - I think it opened sometime around 8-10 years ago.  EDIT: Just noticed the Flag/Banner on their web site says they opened in 2003. /EDIT:  Visited it when I drove up to Scarby from Houston in 2004, and had a good meal.

Take Care,
David Baldock

The College Street Pub is VERY Festival friendly, have a great selection of thirst quenchers, and good food to boot!

I also agree with the College Street Pub suggestion, in addition to my Catfish Plantation suggestion.  I know that we all went to College Street a few times after we'd finished auditioning new SAPA members and after various staff meetings.  Good food, decent prices, wide selection of liquid refreshment. :)
