Opening Day
137 --- dang! am I the only one that's excited?
Nope, the pirate already has given me the "due by TRF opening day" to do list. ;D

...but...but...THIS IS SCARBY! :D
I'm excited! But we have to get through TRF closing, year end busy busy work stuff (which rolls into January and Sidekick and I are in the same line of business so share the same busy season) and then Sherwood in February!
Yeah...all you rotten Texans ::) with all your rottenly wonderful faires.... Some of us are too far to have so much fun! But we love you anyway... :-*
Ahem....136!
<sneaks out before Merlin notices>
I noticed...too gentlemanly to make a scene ;D
Spoken like a true wizard.
We're busy counting down here...135...while everyone else has gone to TRF-bound...
...fell asleep at the switch.... 130 !!
It is 129 days, 23 hours, 2 minutes and 5 seconds until Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 10:00:00 AM (Dallas time)
I thought the countdown wouldn't really start until after Sherwood.
Until I have absolute, positive, fer sure, proof that we're going to be able to attend Sherwood, I feel compelled to maintain a formal countdown to the opening of the faire that I cannot, will not, shall not miss unless I get run over by a herd of angry Scotsmen.
Counting down from Sherwood to Scarby would be the shortest countdown on the forums lol
*Barely enough time between those two faire to restock my rum*
If I didn't have a conference that week, I could go to closing Saturday at Sherwood, and preview Sunday at Scarby... yeah, REAL short countdown!
Ok---- ;D
It is 126 days, 21 hours, 21 minutes and 35 seconds until Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 10:00:00 AM (Dallas time)
Passes purchased...Is it time yet?.... is it time yet?.... is it time yet?.... ::)
125 Days to go!
I'm beginning to like the way that sounds! ;D
123! It's getting better each day Merlin? <snicker> :D
You got that right, Lady Kett! I was overly excited last year by December with much less to look forward to than this year. Still waiting to find out if Nim got the requisite time off for faires this Spring—Sherwood and Scarby. My time off is generally no problem since it's not dependent upon others being off, unlike Nim.
Merlin, c'mon now, you're slipping!
122!
Oh my goodness that soon?! :o Need to start figuring out plans.
Aye. Not long to go now.. I am excited already.

Not yet, Gauwyn. Perhaps you can do what we're going to do in the meantime and visit Sherwood Forest, just under 10 weeks away!

Would love to visit Sherwood, but being 14 hours away, only 1 trip is possible :(
Understandable... Sherwood's 8 hours for us, so we'll only go there once this year. Scarborough is 5 hours and much more manageable for us. Will we see you opening weekend of Scarby?
115 ... in case you're wondering...

Do ya dress up? Kilts?
Oh and.... COME ON Scarby !
I say it is a Irish music fair. This will be it 29th year and i have loved it every time i go. Yes a lot of men wear kilts and a small few were garb (I think it is only the selling it).
They have some were around 37 bands (Clandestine, The Rogues and many more).

For 12 years if you came through the front gate you had to see either his lordship or myself selling tickets.
NTIF is sponsored by the Southwest Celtic Music Association. The purpose is to foster an appreciation of all forms of Celtic music, as well as promote education about Celtic cultures. Quite a few people view it as the part of the faire season in Texas and dress accordingly, more kilts than you can count. There is music all day on several stages, vendor booths and cultural booths. Want to see a lot of Irish Wolfhounds and Scottish Deerhounds? NTIF is your place.
Go out and give it a try. It is a lot of fun.

The PP and I are debating if we want to get a FOF pass or just get the regular gate passes. With me being sick all weekend he is concerned that we won't get to go as much if I'm ill, and tired. I know we will be there opening weekend at least. And then memorial day weekend.
If you go more than 4 days each...FOF is cheaper than full gate price. So if you add one more weekend, you've at least made a good financial decision. Plus free water and gatorade (if you like it) and closer parking. If I recall properly all those years ago, not having to walk as far and lots of water are bonus points during pregnancy. Of course mine is 21 now and wants me to fill her flask, not make sure she has water! :)
Either way - FOF or not - can't wait to see you again and give you a Congrats in person! :)
I'll promise you that Nim and I would NOT have survived Memorial Day Weekend if it hadn't been for the FoF pavilions, and neither of us was pregnant. I'm with Lady Kett on this.
We were looking at minimum of 4 days at least, and with the parking and the fluids. We are leaning more towards it.
I can say that if the little one is very far along... the water and close parking will be close to a necessity.
Best decide soon, m'Lady because it's only
73 days, 18 hours, 28 minutes, 7 seconds, until Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 10:00:00 AM

Fighting the urge to go on down to the gate and get in line!! We are nearing that "only 60 days mark" rather rapidly. We did get or FOF passes, mainly because we will go down for at least 6 weekends. Also, it is great to have the free passes. Last year we took our kids and the grandkids got in free on opening weekend. Get's alot of folks in for little money. The FOF is worth it for us, although we did used to (up until 3 years ago) get just one plus one season pass (which must be absolutely the reason the s/pass was eliminated). Now we get the FOF and really try to take advantage of the benefits. I hope that things are just as wonderful at Faire this 2011 season. I know the economy is a killer, but here's to things getting better! *Perhaps tonight our President, in his State of the Union address, will announce a tax break for Ren Fest attendees* - one can always dream!
I wouldn't head down there just quite yet, Ryk, but it is tempting.
I thought that I was excited last year about faire. I think I'm going off the deep end... This year, besides Scarby, we're also doing Sherwood, hopefully CoRF for RenDezvous, and maybe OkRF in Muskogee. The Son would like for us to do the NYRF, since that's up by him. We'll see what the future will bring. Nim and I have even discussed buying a new vehicle to travel to faire in...is that screwed up or what?

Does anyone know anything about the Super 8 in Waxahachie? I'll be there opening weekend, and I need a place to stay.
I'm so excited! The only other time I've been to Scarby, we had to leave early because the weather was so bad (it was the day the Cowboys practice arena collapsed...)
I knew I'd remembered seeing something about the Super 8 out here... I looked back at some threads from April 2010... We've never stayed there, but it appears that it is a rather popular spot for the partying rennies. But since I haven't been there myself, better wait for confirmation!

The Super 8 is ok. It's not a 5 star hotel so as long as your expectations aren't too high, you should be ok. We stayed there last year over Rendezvous, even tho we are local, just so we wouldn't have to drive home afterwards.
I used that bad weather day to shop, thus staying mostly under cover! :) I remember a friend of mine called my cell to make sure we were ok, and having consumed a few adult beverages, I told her I was just wonderful and shopping at Scarborough! ;D

We've stayed there a couple of times and are likely going to stay opening and second weekend at least. A lot of Rennies stay there. It's clean and convenient. We are staying Friday night and Saturday night opening and Saturday night second weekend. We'll look for you there....
We always stay at the 8...never had any problems.

isn't there some type of 'new' math to make this shorter?
Yeah, but I haven't been cleared to use it. Lady Kett seems to be pretty good at it. I think by her reckoning, it's almost time to head to the parking lot...just as soon as we return from Sherwood Forest.
Whee did someone say Rennie Math time?
Let's see what we can come up with to make that 66 days much shorter!
- Superbowl weekend, since the Steelers are in it, that's 4 days for us [-4]
- I may have to work tomorrow but I have no plans of going to the office, so hopefully another [-1]
- We leave 2/11 for FlaRF on 2/12 and 2/13 [-3]
- I could count Mon, Tues and Wed following since we will be on vacation still in Deerfield Beach and surely THAT doesn't count, right? [-3]
- Still on vacation that following Thurs and a meeting I may have had to go to has been cancelled, so surely it doesn't count [-1]
- We leave for Sherwood on Fri 2/18, and Faire on 2/19 and 2/10 [-3]
- We have the North Texas Irish Festival on 3/4, 3/5 and 3/6. Scarby has a booth there. [-3]
- St. Patrick's Day should be full of partying, not counting [-1]
That's all I can think of right now!!!! That takes 19 days off your 66, leaving only 47 days! WHEEEE!

There are certain things you acquire which should sit on a shelf and be admired. Scotch is not one of them. It's meant to be lovingly imbibed! Or so Sidekick tells me, I can't stand the stuff personally.

Yes, it is all the way up to 24 here in Iowa - time to go tan at the beach :)
It's warmer in Florida!!! 21 degrees in Dallas when we took off. 77 degrees in Florida when we landed. I'm not going home unless it's warm, dang it!

Yes! RenDezvous is one of our trips! We'd try to make more, but we have to take time out to work and pay for all this fun...and a new van to get us there...

I can't believe it's less than 7 weeks away now, I just hope my shoulder is well enough to play my drum as hard as I'd like to ;)
I can't wait for Scarby to get here. Sherwood only made me even more excited!
My crew, The Hellshade, we're planning on taking the shire by storm alongside the Valkyrie's Furi and the Impaler.
We're ready...are you? ;)

I can smell the turkey legs and cinnamon nuts, feel the gentle breezes through the pecan trees and hear the soothing music drifting across the village! Count it down!!!!!!!!!!!
Something I wish Scarby had...Bass Ale. I sure enjoyed having that at Sherwood Forest (hint, hint!). When I can't have my Jack Daniel's, I do like me some fish beer (as opposed to Fish Cheer, which some of you will remember).
I'm excited! Again!
Dad.... Bass Ale sucks. I'll buy you a real beer at Cat and Fiddle... I promise.

I was wondering that myself, Gauwyn. I haven't seen much of anything in the way of imports at Scarby...can't think of one at the moment. For the prices charged at the taps, they could serve a better brew. It's my only real complaint about Scarborough.

The Cat and Fiddle does have some good brews - but nothing out of the ordinary if I remember.
Holy cow..... trust me... Cat and Fiddle has a wonderful dark beverage... you'll love it.
Unless you are Bud Light kind of guy...then you'll hate it.
Bud Light sucks and shouldn't even be called beer.
There is no such thing as a light beer. If it's light (or lite), it's not beer.
I do not care as much for lagers in general, as I prefer a full-bodied brew, hence my preference for ales and stouts. I've yet to meet a craft beer in this part of the country that really blows my socks off, but I'm always willing to sample. I thought I had sampled the darkest thing that the Cat & Fiddle was serving, but I could be wrong, young Merlin. I hope you can steer me to a good Scarby brew, son! Buy your dear old dad a brewski, eh? ;)

I have 58 days to wait! Darn this bike ride stuff!
I'm loving this countdown, because countdown minus three days is when I move out of FL, and start my trek back to CA! Can't wait to meet everyone at Scarby on the way! :)
I take it you'll be coming through on opening weekend? Hope to see you... I'll be the scary looking one. My wife said that I scared the fiddler from Circa Paleo at Sherwood a couple weeks ago. Believe it or not, there was a time when I was devilishly handsome...well, okay...just devilish. :)
Yep, opening weekend. And since I'll be staying locally, and not coming in that morning from out of town, I hope to make tailgate too (you guys do have tailgate, right?)
I think "Do you have tailgate?" is an understatement for this group. :) The PP and I are determined to get to tailgate this year come heck or high water.
I am certainly ready and should be in the parking lot by 8 AM. ;D
I don't know I will be able to get my group out there quite that early...it will likely be closer to 9, but I'll try.
Before 9AM the parking attendants are either not there, or completely ignore you. In which case, morning tailgate is where you see the cars.
After 9AM the parking attendents start waving their flags and you have to decipher where "Friend of Faire" parking is - which is where the tailgate is, vs where the attendants send you to park. The 2 are not that far apart, don't panic.
I could look up the row info, it's not that difficult, but I'm still thawing out at the moment. Look for a Scottish flag and lots of people getting dressed in the parking rows, and that's pretty much where morning tailgate is. Even if they aren't R/F'ers they're a pretty friendly lot if you stop by and say hi.
PS Dona is almost always the first car in the row so if you're really shy, you can aim for the first car and we'll either find you with Dona or she'll point you towards the rest of the R/Fers in the row!
If you want a cell # to help find us, let me know I will PM you. We normally get there about 8:30AM.

I was hoping the weather to be somewhat mild, but AccuWeather is predicting some uncomfortable temps. But it's still far enough away that the weather birds can be wrong, and close enough that I'm jumping about like an insane wizard, which is a much more accurate assessment than the weather.
Based on my history involving weather for, well, ANYTHING. Look at the climatology for the area (weather channel, weather underground, etc). Whatever the average temperature is, add 6 degrees to it and you should be right on the money. (This will only apply the 1st weekend, when I'll be there, after that anything goes). When possible I go to faires when its forecast to be in the 60's, thereby forcing it to go into the low 70's and everybody is happy with the warmer temps. ::)

That's true. We had frost up in Ardmore this morning. Whatever the weather, 'twill be a great day!
Is the wind a big problem on faire site? I know at CORF when they say it's windy they really mean it, because we have so few trees and it's all dirt...
The preview day Sunday was really windy and dusty, so hopefully the rain will wet the ground enough to settle the dust but not too much mud. But there are enuogh grassy places that if is the wind gusts up, the dust isn't too bad.
3 days, 21 hours, 2 mins, 30 secs unitl 10am 4-9-11
When you are pushing 50-60mph gusts of wind, yes there is going to be dust. There is alot of grass around, but on the gravel paths there is some dust.
I have found that weather can change fast this time of year. Grandma use to say it was the spirts of winter and Summer fighting over who get's the upper hand. ;D

It's Texas. The weather changes just to show you it can.
But usally wind is not a big issue except in the parking lot. Inside the fair the grounds are down in a bowl like depression, so the wind is mostly blocked out.

Hah, sounds a whole lot like Colorado.
Although being from central Arkansas I don't get to Scarby but 2-3 times a year, but this past weekend was the windiest that I've run into there. But there was some really serious wind this past weekend.

It may not be uphill in all directions, but there's damn sure Texans in all directions... don't know which is worse...
Jeez, I hope these people know I'm kidding them!

Every time I visit a flat faire I have a moment where I have to go "why are my calves not burning? Oh...oh yeah."
Hey, Merlin the Elder,
Just keep visiting us Texans at Sherwood, Scarby and maybe TRF, keep having a great time here. Who knows, someday you might join us for good. ;D
Me, I got a bumper sticker that says "I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as soon as I could."

I will be eagerly anticipating Saturday morning as this week has been nothing less of eventful.
Gretchen or Almare on the boards (not very active, but anyone that has seen me run around faire would recognize her, she's my roommate and best friend) is fine but I had to take her to the ER this morning, poor chica had a kidney stone.
I will be so ready for Saturday...after a full nights rest, at least. ;D
Finally got my cloak Scotchguarded last night, just in case of rain. I just need to get my shopping list revised, pack mundanes for when at the camper...I think that's it.
Facebook is now showing the event for "Scarbrorough Renaissance Festival" in my events section, which means it is now offically almost here!!

It's already sold out >:(
Oh, no! I'm so sorry!!! I guess it's either so many hours or so many tickets, whichever comes first... :-\
Hey guys - I think we've hit the point of counting down hours, not days!! So...
43 hours, 56 minutes, 35 seconds!!
I leave here in 14 hours...
Not that you are counting the hours Merlin ;D
Like `ell I'm not! I can't bloody sit still.
I feel like a race horse before a race. The gate opens on Saturday and I'm getting excited for that gate to open! I can't wait to see people again!
Gaaaahhhh!!! I WISH we could get down there this weekend!!! I actually bought discount tickets today (because the deal was just too good to pass up... ::) )... without any CLUE as to how I will pay for gas, and fully prepared to spend two nights sleeping in the van... but I'm still working on it!
I know you'll all have an awesome time...
This is going to be a great weekend I am sad Jacob will not be able to make it out with us this weekend he has to work but we already have the passes so why not :) lol
I just finished a shirt for Dorian not really a good one but it won't be to hot :)
I'm hoping I can get my traveling companions to do the pre-cannon tailgate. I am bringing some refreshments again, including some non-alcoholic in case you get thirsty, Lady Stitch!
Did anyone happen to get two extra discount tickets, by any chance?
I have so much to do to get ready.... why I am sitting on my behind, goofing off!! :o
Okay... I've got my chores done, other than carrying the stuff down to the van. Nimue's getting the rest of the stuff organized and packed.
In 12 hours, we'll extract Homer, the Odyssey, from his protective shell, drop by and pick up Ladies Victoria and Elaine, make a stop at the local International House of Prayer Pancakes, then head to the Lone Star State for a weekend in the shire of Scarborough.
If predictions of high temperatures hold true, I may dress less than regally wizardy, but such is life in the big shire.
By the time we get into our quarters tomorrow, many of you will be en route yourselves. Travel safely so that we can enjoy your company this weekend.
Merlin be safe on your trip south. We look forward to seeing you Sat.
Many thanks, Your Grace. Drop by Homer, the Odyssey, for some libation pre-cannon!
Tried on what I'm gonna wear, even ran downstairs and showed both of my roommates to see what they thought (yep, I'm a dork but dress up is a necessary pre-faire ritual!) Color wise, its lookin' like red won, with the red lipstick to go with. :-*
We're so close! We're almost to the 24 hour mark...
I am so excited to see everyone at morning tailgate!!

It is 1½ hours until we start our journey.
OMG! IT"S ALMOST HERE!!!! Elo - I wore half of my garb to work today to show my students (sans bodice and all the bits that go on my belt). I remembered last night of a belt pouch I wanted to make, so now I'm frantically trying to finish that - brought with me to work on during lunch and conference :) So much to pack!! Backpack of mundanes, toiletries, garb and accessories, my basket, and a tub to fit it all in....
I can't wait!!! 26 hours, 18 mins!!
I don't know if it was faire excitement or what, but I woke up this morning at 5:30 AM when I normally don't fall out of bed until an hour later. I actually got up and added more trim to my dress, repaired my bloomers, AND got 90% done on my new purse to match my dress. All that is left on that is getting a new basket, a new bow for my hat, AND hemming the dress.
The PP decided 2 days ago he wanted the feathers removed from his coat and new trim added. Ideally I know he wants it for tomorrow, but we shall see.
The tub has been pulled out from the closet, and everything is being readied for the launch pad. The PP is making plans to make sure we are there by 8:30 AM tomorrow so we can be at the tailgate.
Tomorrow...,. Tomorrow.... Heee ::bounce bounce:: ;D ;D
Leaving now...
Drive safe, everyone!
Jumped the gun earlier, now we are leaving...hoping to avoid Ft. Worth traffic on this little magic carpet ride. Can they go ahead and let us in tonight????!!!
