Sadly to say , I was not able to attend the opening year of this splendid fair. This year it is planned, I will make it out on opening weekend. Just looking to see who will be attending at the same time. It will be great to see old faces and greet new ones!!
We should be there for opening Saturday, it's on the calender.
My husband and I are trying really hard to make arrangements in order for us to make it to opening day. Fingers crossed! :)
We plan on being their openning weekend but like all plans they are tentative.
In terms of physical size, is this best visited as a two-day event? I realize that it is a young faire, but I hear such wonderful things about it! Regardless, if we come down, we will likely do FoF just for support, even though any camping would be done in a king at the nearest Holiday or Hampton Inn. It certainly sounds inviting!
Merlin and others, when you are ready to go to the darkside, come camp in the General/open campgrounds.
Some things you have never experienced before:
After we have pushed out the patrons at the end of each day and the fireworks in the parking lot done, we shift things around to let the Participants (mainly shopkeepers) out. Once this is completed, we open the gate between the Patrons campgrounds and the Faire area, so that folks can attend the party at the Pub or joining us at the fire at the Seven Sister stone circle. Name another Faire that does this.
Also, we will now have flush toilets and showers (with, (gasp) hot water).
Mike Pullen
SWFF Campgrounds Manager
I'm trying my best to be there. What better way to spend my birthday is Opening Weekend.
Merlin,
We went opening weekend last year and 2 days was barely enough. I can only imagine that this year (and future years) will reinforce that.
We are hotel campers too - stayed in Bastrop. Reasonably local, but our hotel choice will hopefully be upgraded this year. I hope you and your fair lady can make it this year so we can see you again before Scarby!
Well Pat , then your ticket is on me . Happy Birthday at Faire
We will definitely be there opening weekend and most others as well.
I will be there to greet everyone every weekend- unless my evil twin shows up instead! LOL.
I know this family is planning on being there!
I'm gonna try my best to make it as much as possibly. Shooting for opening weekend + some.
After seeing the spread in this month's Renaissance Magazine-I wish I could go.
Have fun!
I'm trying my best to arrange things so we can attend opening weekend, at least, and if I can start selling more of my crafts between now and then we might just be able to make it... There's a certain ceremony my renlet and I would love to attend that weekend, as well! Scally ADORES MM, and is thrilled that he is so very happy these days!
Merlin, I haven't gotten to attend this wonderful new Faire yet, either, but all of the folks I know who have been have had only wonderful things to say about it, the enchanting setting, the talented cast and all the people who have volunteered their hard work and sweat equity to make it the Magical place it is, and we are determined to add it to our yearly schedule of "not to be missed" Faires! If we were closer we would be volunteering to work as street entertainers, as well, just for the pleasure of joining in!
Lady R... when we do finally make it, we'll be camping with our clan, P.R., even though we unfortunately haven't been able to make it down for any of the work days. From the pics, it looks like everyone has a great time working and playing while getting the place ready for the season, and I'm soooo looking forward to seeing all the cool little (and not so little) things I've been watching take shape over the last year and more... :D I'm particularly looking forward to dancing with the Seven Sisters...
Merlin, I am not sure how best to describe it but I will try.
Though you could probably see everything you wanted with plenty of time in one day, this faire is suited for two. I am only familiar with TRF and Sherwood, so my experience is not extensive, but to me Sherwood is just a much more laid back faire. At TRF, it always feels like you're having to rush to make your shows and I always feel pulled about. This is not to say I don't love TRF, it just feels different at Sherwood. I feel more inclined to sit a spell, hang out, chat, unwind. I guess it is just a more relaxing faire.
Thanks for all the good info, everyone ... we're taking it under advisement. ;)
We're a tentative yes for opening weekend, depending on schedules (Tiff's school and my clinicals, since I am finishing my paramedic cert), but we're not sure whether we will be camping (if we do, it will be next to Meggers :P ) or staying with friends in the area.
I'm getting a definite "maybe" from my (much) better half...she says she can camp, I say "as long as there is a Jacuzzi." Well? Is there? ;D
Ironically enough, it just might be possible (http://www.activeforever.com/p-25305-mspa-bubble-spa-camaro-portable-hot-tub-b130.aspx?CMPID=Froogle_mspa-bubble-spa-camaro-portable-hot-tub-b130) :D
Okay...I'd thought I'd seen everything. NOW I have!
Over here we have learned to scrounge and find the oddest things :D One of our Ugandans is so bloody good at it, we jokingly asked him "okay, get us a camel... in a helicopter." His response- "Give me two days" :D
Needless to say, finding things like portable jacuzzis is kid-stuff ;)
I am most definitely looking forward to being in Sherwood Forest on first, last and all weekends in between.
Polly PoPo
::)
We will be attending, HH6 (the better half) all ready stated we will day trip.

It's looking good for us so far. Bastrop has a Hampton Inn, which is our preference for gathering freebee nights. It also has a Holiday Inn, which is our alternate. If Nim gets the time off, we'll go ahead and book for opening weekend! YAY!
Heard good things about this faire so we will be coming.
At TRF this weekend my daughter and I met some folks who just happen to have a two week time-share at a resort right down the road from Sherwood, and we've talked them into shooting for opening weekend, so we may have the option of either camping or staying in luxury... :P heheh I'm sure that, unless it's actually freezing out, we'll still choose camping, although a soak in the hot tub might help to work out the days' kinks! :D
We are tentatively on for opening weekend. I need to figure out where the best place to stay is, request time off, etc. Since we will only be able to make one trip, I would like to attend Sat. & Sun.
I'm surprised there is no countdown thread. ;)
Start a count down thread? Glad you are coming!
I am still recovering from TRF.LOL!
The Holiday Inn in Elgin is supposed to be nice and only 20 minutes from faire.
Me & mine plan to be there opening weekend, even if we have to day trip it.
If my schedule doesn't change and the Good Lord willing my family will in attendance for the full run of the faire. Its helps having a dedicated camping spot just outside the gate (o:
going to make a valiant effort to be there for opening weekend.. so you can pretty much count on me to be there
looking forward to seeing all the new friends and the ones i haven;t met yet
And for all those contemplating camping, we will have flush toilets and showers with hot water for patrons up near the pub.
We have over 120 scheduled performances a day...with the addition this year of a mud show, ded bob, and full contact joust.
One of the big reasons that we want to go opening weekend is that NTIF almost guarantees cold, wet weather for the first weekend in March with the same for St Pat's weekend. Historically late February has better weather than most of March. Cold I can handle, freezing rain not so much.

Can't argue with that. Though our St. Pats here in Houston is typically warm and sunny. Of course, I've cursed us now by pointing it out (o:
The New flushie toilets near the pub are in and Wow! I used them last Saturday!
I am doing the weather spells for Sherwood! I hope the weather is as nice as TRF was this past season! I will try my best!
So the flush toilets are for the camp ground? or inside the faire?
This will be the first year the pirate and I will be going so I don't have a point of reference.

If they're near the Pub, I suspect that they will be used during the day by Faire-goers, and then a gate or door will be opened to allow access to them from the campground at night.
Thats exactly how it was opening season with the privy trailer
BTW - As long as I'm not On-Call at work here in Houston, I'm currently planning to be there opening weekend, and a few more times during the 2011 season.
Won't be camping, since I'll be staying with friends in McDade.
Take Care,
David Baldock
We will definitely be out there camping opening weekend. The other camping weekends for us just depends on the Lovely Lady Trinn's schedule at work.
*Rum at Sherwood takes on a magical flavoring to be sure...*
Planning to be unless the weather turns off bad... Will most likely camp with Bonnie! That way I am the night driver for us!

I'm humbled, Lady Kett, that you would make that decision because we're coming! The only thing that would screw it up is if there is ice/snow, but as of today, we are booked in Bastrop! Looking forward to this trip BIG time!

Will the boat deck be there??? key piece of land mark for navigation purposes
Absolutely - And if all goes well - you'll have to cross the deck to enter the camp
Hmmm, I think I will be there for opening weekend, plus the week before all the way through closing, plus the jousting weekend. I think I am considered a captive audience. The transition from being a Playtron to a Faire staff has been an eye opening event. Two years ago, I never realized what it took to put together such an event where our energies went to ensuring that the paying folks got what they paid for.
I'm glad that I joined forces with a management staff who knew what the Faire folks wanted and needed, plus was appeasing to the general public.
We are approaching year two. We are looking at year five and beyond. Sherwood Forest Faire is fastly becoming the answer to the needs of the Rennaissance Faire community in the area.

Well Said Mike - I whole heartedly agree on your last point. And my family is happy to have been a small part of its first chapter.
We will be in a hotel. I like my controlled climate sleeping. :)
Reservations made! We'll be at Ye Olde Super 8, Bastrop. See y'all in 68 days!
I booked at the Super 8 a well. Look forward to seeing everyone soon.

No - But the camp ground is - And rest assured we WILL be celebrating the Night Before Opening in the grounds.
I plan on being there opening weekend, camping, partying, and fire breathing, friday night If all goes to plan!!
We will be attending opening weekend as well as the following weekends. Probably will camp out 1st weekend just for fun. Can't wait!!!
I hope the weather is good. I was glad for the extension of weekends but mid February can be hit or miss on the temperature. We'll be there either way but temperature will determine whether we camp on that first weekend.
We have a ton of happy memories from last year and are counting the days until Act 2!
So, who is ending up indoor camping in Bastrop for opening weekend? (Arthur Itis makes it difficult for us to outdoor camp anymore...)
Will be there for both opening and spring break weekends!
Can some one tell me what time does the gate open on Friday, so I can time my drive over?

My trailer is onsite behind my Son's booth (#113 close to the Greenwood Stage), so my setup time is about zilch. I may come out after work on Thursday or definitely Friday morning and open the campgrounds gate as soon as the paid ticketbooth attendant is available.

I'm not sure if Giggles will be out there that weekend. I'm not even sure who I'll be coming out as. That place is very conducive for fairies so maybe Dewdrop, but then I may create a whole new fairy. Then again, JIngles is always fun.

And here's to hoping I don't need my long johns!
Funny you should mention that, Doña C. It occurred to me that my tootsies might get a bit chilled in my sandals. It could get interesting...

I was only able to make Opening Day last season but it was great fun.
My crew and I are working out the issues but we're trying to make it down on Friday night.
We'll only be out for Saturday due to schedules but we're still gonna try.
At least you'll make it for Monte's handfasting - and that is a good thing :)
I'll be there from Friday to early Sunday morning. I must depart for the magical chariot race that day from a Floridian hamlet named Daytona.
I'm not sure which day, but either Saturday or Sunday Don Juan will be in disguise.
The hubby and I will be out open day and into the evening but we won't be camping. I may make it out closing Saturday as well but that's still up in the air.
Mehopes I will make it; Lollie and the gang will be going but my sweetie's Birthday is that weekend...so I don't know if I can talk him into going to Sherwood for his Bday. If we can't make it out there Saturday, mayhaps I'll day trip Sunday for a quick hello! I REALLLY hope we can make it, though, as I really wanted to be there for Monte's handfasting! :(
*crosses fingers* Hopefully the man will have his Bday festivities on Friday so I can get out there Saturday! :)
You just need to show him who's boss, Juju ;)
I'll be there opening weekend. All day both days.
I am looking at the possibility of coming down on the weekend of March 26 and 27 since Owen is also to be there that weekend. I also have that weekend free. It all depends on plane fare and where the nearest place to stay is as well as renting a car. Have to see about the finances since I will start performing myself for the year shortly after this. I would really like to go especially since a few people last year also told me about it while I was at the Ohio faire. By the way, where would I fly in to?
Lord Clisto
Austin, TX would be the closest lad. There are places in Giddings and Bastrop as well as in Austin to stay. Check the website I think they have some listed there as well.
Thanks, I saw the lodging and if I get there it would be close to the faire since the airport looks to be over 100 miles from the site. Long drive. I have to see how the funds come out. Right now its looing up there for everything , but we will see.

this may be a dumb question, but is there a daily parade at Sherwood? If so, perhaps we could set up a meet and greet at the pub afterwards on Saturday, since that is what is done at TRF.
Comments? Suggestions?
There are plenty of good meeting places but I don't have a schedule handy to see whats available at what times. The best areas would be the pub, the seven sisters, the falcon stage or under the trees at the southwest side of the faire near the games.
Crossing fingers for warm weather. Or at least above 50 ;D
Yes Tink, there is a daily parade at Sherwood.

According to AccuWeather, it's supposed to reach the 70s both days.
Actually they are calling for 70 all next week at Sherwood.
keep your fingers crossed.

Yeah...but, I hope that "other thing" goes away...
Alright, after looking at a map of the village, I am suggesting that we have a meet and greet at the Seven Sisters on opening Saturday directly after the parade. Does that jive with everyone?
we are in after the parade seven sisters,
see you near the stones

Did my wife really use the word "jive" in a sentence.... ?
"mm...mm..hand jive...hand jive...and do that crazy hand jive..."
Don't fret, lad. I think over the years, jive and jibe got confused and frequently interchanged. YOU GOTTA PROBLEM WITH THAT?!? ;D
Hopefully by the time the parade ends, Nim and I will have an idea where in the bloody hell Seven Sisters is. After all, we have a 3:30 appointment there... Seven Sisters it is, and we'll all get stones...

Sounds good to me...that is probably a landmark everyone will recognize, or be able to find. Are you going to post a thread about it?
If you pop over to the Sherwood Forest Faire site (sherwoodforestfaire.com), under "Seek Ye Our Village", there is a map that shows the 7 Sisters in the upper right of the map. Although the map is from 2010, the Sisters do not move. They are standing stones embedded in the earth.
Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

I wanna GOOOO!!! :'( :'( :'(
To find the Seven Sisters From the Main Gate:
Turn Left immediately upon entering the main gate. Walk a short distance down the road. The Stone Circle will be on your right.
To find the Seven Sisters from the Camp ground Entrance:
Travel down the road between the Conquistador and the Elven Hill stage. Follow the road down to the Chapel and hang a left. Follow the main road toward the main gate then hang a right at the blacksmiths shoppe. Walk a short distance down the road. The Stone Circle will be on your right.
KP you nailed it on the head,
if you miss the sisters following merlins words you might have been" stoned "
already
I will try to wrangle me and mine to be at the Meet and Greet but no guarentees. Pirates run on their own time! ;)
Super excited, can't wait to see everyone!
Looks like I won't be able to go this year. Plane fare is too high yet. I really want to get to this faire some time. Thanks to all who were great in offering accomodations. I really appreciate it

I have heard so many great things about this faire and now that its only a few days away,
I feel so excited I now have this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kke9kaV9sMU) stuck in my head.
I'm in! Uncle Sam said yes, see y'all this weekend.

Woo-Hoo! I wish I had something I could loan you, but all my 14th century stuff is gone with the schwinn.
Will be heading out Thursday morning. Should be getting to Elgin about 14 hours (924 miles) or so later.
Safe travels everyone.

I'll be there, but it's business, so no armor this time.

If Google travel time estimates are accurate, and I don't drink too much coffee causing numerous pit-stops, we should be pulling into Bastrop between 2-3:00 pm tomorrow in Homer, the Odyssey. I'm so excited, I feel like a Pointer Sister.
LOL For just a moment I read that as Pointer Setter... and had visions of you as a hood ornament in the classic "hunting" pose... :D :D :D
I've been hearing from some of the Girltorage, and it looks like I'll have 5 or 6 of the girls in tow Saturday,
Also, my father has expressed a sudden interest in faire, (I think it started at some point during the Circa Paleo show at the Mucky Duck he attended with me ;) ) so I might have him along too.

where's the
like button?
Looks like we will be there Friday sometime in the evening. We have a 'convoy' of F-250's pulling travel trailers leaving my house in Magnolia around 6pm. Myself, Bonny Pearl, Sir Richard (Advent), Lady Ashleigh and Lord Deveany will be heading to that way as soon as we are all finished with the mundane work day, or week for that matter ;D
Sir Oliver and the Dolphin will be departing before Richard and I, and should be parked on the Sherwood grounds sometime Friday afternoon...stop by and say hello if you get a chance :D
We shall make our way to the campgrounds once we are set up...but feel free to stop by and visit and raise a glass...Huzzah :)

We will definitely try to get over there. At some point friday night we'll be going into town for dinner.
Odds are we will be over at your camp Sat. for Martin's thing. Maybe you can give me a tour. I would like to see how the grounds look. I have not seen them since pre opening. McLot and/or Onondaga have been talking about camping.

Was it during the during the second set, when Jenny & Kelly came out in their
Elf Costumes, and then were joined on-stage by the 3 or 4
Belly Dancers? ;) ;D

Love to give y'all a tour, though they've made some changes since last season and I haven't seen them all yet. So some of it will be new to me too (o:

Trip slightly shorter than Google's estimate, but have arrived safe and sound. Are checked in and I'm going to take a nice shower after that 9-hour drive, and sip a light toddy.
I am here and have already been mistaken for Merlin. Humpf! I am much better looking. Must have been the beard.
There can be only one...Merlin the Elder, that is... Where are you?
Glad you made it safely! Take lots of photos, please!!! Oh, and wish DonaC and the Don a very Happy Anniversary from us, please!
I've made it to Houston, we'll be day tripping tomorrow, and will be there bright and early! Any morning happenings occurring before opening?
290 HWY cafe breakfast 0700,
and the parking lot by 0830
the party is on at 0845
We made it to Giddings! Yay!
the good news: we're going to make it to Sherwood
the bad news: we missed Opening weekend due to work, and this coming weekend is spoken for, too, so it'll be weekend after next at the earliest. Need to get a date upon which everyone is gathering :)

We won't be there next weekend either due to Martin's "legal" wedding. But we will back for week 3.
