Title: Can you dye elastic?
Post by: Lady Renee Buchanan on December 18, 2010, 09:41:56 PM
My friend had a great idea for her bodice, and asked me if I knew the answer.  Of course, I don't, but I told her I knew where to ask.

Here is the question.  The bodice laces in the front, back, and both sides.  She'd like to use about 1/4 inch elastic to lace the sides.  She doesn't need tight holding power, she wants to be comfortable with some give when she turns, sits, especially towards the end of the day, plus there would be real laces in the front and back.

Rather than plain white lacing, which is what she has found, does that kind of elastic come in colors, or if not, can it be dyed using Rit Dye?  She'd rather find one of the colors in the bodice as opposed to going plain white.

With all of the sew-ers on this forum, I'm hoping someone will know where to get colored elastic or if it can be dyed.  Thanks for your help!

Etsy has some elastic in colors:

Another option would be to use an elastic cord--JoAnn, etc regular stock gold and silver elastic cord that might work.

EDITED to fix link

I used a black sharpie marker on some bra elastic and it covered pretty good.
