Title: Must see at Scarby?
Post by: Meagan on March 12, 2011, 08:14:22 AM
I plan on making a weekend trip to Scarby this year. I think I'm going to be out with the kidlets one day but come solo on the other. I didn't make it out to Scarby at all last year, and the three years prior to that I only saw three shows the entire time and don't remember doing much but being uncomfortably pregnant. In essence, I haven't been involved in faire for four years. My question is, what shows should I be sure to see? I already have a short list of what I want to do, but I would appreciate help adding to it.

Joust - I have never made a joust at Scarby, which is a travesty.
Daniel Duke of Danger
Cast shows - I've never been able to attend, but have always wanted to. Specifically I'd like to watch the country/court dances, HMC and possibly Scottish Court.

Any other suggestions?

When we went to Scarby last year for the RenDezvous, we enjoyed Michael O'Quinn, Rambling Sailors, and Cast in Bronze.  We also liked the pub sing at the end of the day (the one's with the musicians, not the cast).

Some acts are only going to be there for part of the run.
Just a few of my recommendations;
Arsene
Doktor Kaboom
Don Juan & Miguel
Michael O'Quinn
Donnal Hinely
Ramblin' Sailors
Sarah Mullen

-I really enjoyed Wine and Alchemy, a world music band.
-Don Juan and Miguel...always entertaining.
-Sara Mullen, a pleasure to listen to
-After years of seeing Sholo immobile at Scarborough, either at the gate or at the bridge,, we caught his act for the first time at Sherwood this year. Who-a-thunk? See him! I think he does his show at the White Horse.  Check your local listings for times in his area... ;)
-Twig just always makes me smile...

I'm going to try to shop less this year and see more shows! One jeweler I have to see, though, to see if he has any new dragon rings. I always end up spending time and money in his shop!

I hate to admit it, but I don't think we've ever lasted until the pub sing!  I hope we can pace ourselves and talk our friends into holding on that long.

Well you are going to get a list with every act out there :P
I will tell you what i didn't like  just to be different :
Stewart & Arnold - it is a father and son knife throwing show ( a lot of  people like  it i was bored)
Motley Players III - Whose line doth it be anyway? Comedy improv and water balloons! (i think this one is for the kids. again boring)

Look  i  know a lot of people on this forum will like these i am just saying i didn't.

Now i do love most of the other ones, but i think my fav is
Ebeneezer Crumbee - The Irate Pyrate (LOVE IT. he improv stores and it is amazing. I go to he show 2 or 3 times a trip)

Fire Whip!

I believe Doktor Kaboom will only be there the last weekend (Mem. Day weekend). Hey Nunnie Nunnie was only there for one weekend last year and their time and place were hard to find. Hopefully they're there for the run this time. Scarb's website on shows hasn't been updated yet.   :(

You know, it says 2010, but I don't think it is... If you look at it, it has Sloanwolfe, Arsene on the Crown Stage, Adam Crack on the Revelers Stage, and several other things that weren't from last year... Perhaps they updated the shows but forgot to update the year?

If that is the 2011 schedule, I do not see Hey Nunnie Nunnie.

I've heard that Hey Nunnie Nunnie will not be at Scarby! We will miss them.

Our faves are - Don Juan and Miguel, Adam Crack - fire whip show, Iris and Rose (for the weekend you are there without the kiddos), Cast in Bronze, The German Twins....and well, my list could go on. Do make the Joust, the new troupe is doing a really good job. And I'm sure Sloan Wolfe will put on an incredible show. Then there's the Bellydancers, Thomas the Pyro Guy, and on and on and on....we just love being there. PS - don't miss the parade of course!~

2009- Thomas was opposit Don Juan and Migel
2010- He was opposite The Duke of Danger
2011- He is not performing as Adam is now opposite of the Duke of Danger.  His slot was taken by Sloan Wolf.

LSS, no Pyro Guy this year  >:(

Kinda strange SloanWolfe the bagpipe band is over in Holly field while Wine and Alchemy is over in pecan grove

Last year they were opposite the belly dancers so it does make some sense.  Similar tastes in entertainment on the same stage. /shrug
Besides when the Rogues played on that stage it was beyond packed. I would imagine they would want to give Sloan Wolf room to have dancers and echo across the field.

Your most likely right just seem strange that the pecan grove is known as the place the scots hang out and the bagpipe band is at the other end.   Going be seeing more kilts over in holly field.

I became friends with the ladies of Queen Anne's Lace (http://www.qalace.com/), having met them a year or two before they officially formed the group, when they were singing as members of the Scarborough Madrigals.  So, since I still enjoy hearing them (and see them when they make it to TRF), I would recommend that you catch one of their shows at Scarby.

Take Care,
David Baldock

Although not an act, I would recommend getting something to eat at the bakery place - I have only been a few times, so I don't know the name, but is dead right when you come in the gate and has a decent line of people.  Just don't get to the front and ponder - everyone gets kind of growley :) - I followed a suggestion from last year, bought this reddish cake thing (with a flower on top) slipped down to the hot sauce booth for some raspberry hot sauce - excellent!!

I have to second that motion. LOL. I think the entire cast goes there for breakfast also.
I love their sausage kolaches, but I have to restrain myself from overindulging.

You should also give the fish and chips booth a look over. Last year they had grilled salmon, which you just don't see every day at a faire.

The Tomatoe Basial goat cheese from the bakery is a great breakfast treat.
