Title: History, Customs and Manners 2011
Post by: SirRichardBear on March 18, 2011, 08:40:12 PM
With three weeks to go thought it might be time to start getting ideas togeather for the one of my high points of Scarborough.   I don't know of another faire that has anything like the History, Customs and Manners lectures at Scarborough.

My wife wants to hear their take on laundry. It seem to be a SCAism that nobles only wore their clothes once or twice because they had no way to clean them.

Sadly enough, I have actually heard this horse-pocky repeated in the SCA and treated like fact.   It's one of the main reasons I rarely play anymore.
Noble clothing then (as now) was ruinously expensive. It is well documented that Elizabeth I employed a tribe of laundresses to wash her linens, while her court gowns were cared for and maintained by her ladies; dried mud and dirt was brushed off, and stains were sponged out while sweat smells were aired.   Nothing was thrown out unless it was worn out. There are numerous well documented accounts of the queens' gowns being stripped of jewels and gifted to lesser court members, when they were considered out of fashion, slightly worn, or excess to Her Majesty's needs.  I imagine your wife will hear something along those lines.

I'm not sure anyone from HCM is on the boards any more, to be honest.  Brittney has retired from SAPA to pursue her interest in Highland Games.  (And she's rockin' it, too!  Last I knew she was tenth in the country or so in the Women's Division!).

Hey all. I just joined the forum so the HCM staff can be in touch you this year. I took the year off from directing HCM, and Matthew stepped up to take over those duties for the cast.  However, the show will go on as it has these last few years and I will be heading it up, so please feel free to ask for topics to be covered. We will continue our format of requested topics on Sundays.

I'll put laundry at the top of the list. :)

Any info that would be entertaining about the New World circa 1533? Columbus arrived in 1492 so we know Spain was up to their eyebrows in the New World. I'm only a half-arsed history buff but it seems I don't have any info on England and the New World until Elizabeth I arrives and Sir Walter Raleigh creates Virigina.

DID England do any exploration under Henry VIII?

If not, please go to your next regularly scheduled HCM topic! :)

John Cabot, a Venetian, went to the New World for England in 1497 and discovered Newfoundland.

In 1527, his son, Sebastian Cabot (not THAT Sebastian Cabot) sailed for Molucca, but never found it.

I look forward to all these lectures.
I have another suggestion. Head coverings.

I have read in several sources that Eleanor of Castile scandalized the French Court when she became Queen because she refused to wear a hood or a veil and her ladies did likewise. She wore her hair braided or in a caul with a man's flat cap.

What head coverings would have been considered proper for men and women of Henry VIII's Court.

Mostly written or ways to communicate information (not how to address different people).

I apologize for the delay--life happened, like it does.

The head covering suggestion (which amused me because good gracious cover the head, but please feel free to expose your breasts or fornicate in the halls while at the French Court) and the information exchange suggestion have been passed on.

This weekend:

Saturday: Religion!
Sunday: Food and Drink! Yes, really. It was supposed to be last week, but we got sidetracked with laundry.

If you google either Cabot, you'll find a lot of info on their various trips to, from and north of the New World.  Both of them brought back natives as oddities to show the Kings (Henry VII & VIII).  Overall, England relied heavily upon paying the French and Spanish explorers to do the initial work.

Here are a few links to start you off...

I agree with His Grace of Suffolk that hunting might need a lecture all to itself. I know certain birds or prey were restricted by class and by sex. And hunting for peasants was very different than hunting was for the nobility.
But pastimes and games his last weekend did cover a lot of ground.

A whole class on hunting? That's a fantastic idea! I believe we've got an open slot during Memorial Weekend, so I'll pass that on.

This coming weekend:
Saturday   May 21st    Life at sea
Sunday     May 22nd   Resources of industry - Farming, mining, and goods of export

Thanks for all of your participation thus far. Two weekends to go!
