Title: Opening Weekend Recap
Post by: eloquentXI on April 09, 2011, 06:47:12 PM
Even though I ended up leaving at 2 today and I won't be returning tomorrow, I just have to say that I am so glad to come home.

It was so wonderful to see everyone today and I apologize to those I didnt or didn't see for very long, it's always such a blur. Even hydrated, I don't do well in the heat.

The cast has raised the bar even further and it was such a wonderful feeling to see so many people.

The new Crown Stage is BEAUTIFUL!

Cheers to a great start and hope to see everyone soon!

It was certainly HOT HOT HOT today... but loads of fun. we finally wore ourselves out and left shortly after 6. Going to try to pace better tomorrow, and hopefully, it won't be so miserable. The chorus is singing "fat chance" in the background.

We drove up shortly past 8:30 for tailgate and there was already LOTS of people there. I've never seen that many so early.

It was a great day for me that lasted well past cannon. Lots of hugs and meeting old friends. Picked up a new doublet and it is great! Heat was the only downside.

I didn't get to see much of the cast or any shows. Plenty of time for that.

It was a great opening day, the heat nothwithstanding. A lot of changes, some we knew about and some surprised us totally.
Did you know that the Rose & Crown now has a full bar?
We spent so much time talking to people that we hadn't seen lately that we barely covered 1/2 of the faire. Next week will be slower paced since we'll be brining guests.
Maybe we''' make it across the creek.

Aside from a  particular hawker taking some "goth" jokes a little to far and upsetting my wife, had a wonderful time Saturday, left a few hundred dollars poorer, but loved it.

Let me guess, a particular pretzel seller?

I'm super sorry that he upset your wife, you're not the first that he's severely pissed off.

Goth or not, we're all Rennies. I hope to see ya'll out there again sometime soon.

Lol, it wasnt actually him this time, but I know who you are talking about. We are used to dealing with that one yearly.  I am usually in my "regular" dress for scarby, the heat kills Vikings.  ;D

Had a great time yesterday.  DS is starting to hit that surly teen stage so I don't know how much longer he'll be willing to be seen with us at Faire. Saw my favorites (glassblower & bellydancers) & just enjoyed walking around, soaking up the atmosphere.

Thanks to everyone who made my weekend absolutely lovely (minus the needing a new car battery thing). Yes, it was hot, but I loved meeting new people, and seeing all the shows (I think Scarby has more shows than any other faire I've been to). And thanks especially to Wolfhawker, who served as my dance partner for almost the whole court dance today! I have to say, I think all the dancing was one of my favorite parts.

I will try to figure out how to put up all the pictures I took for everyone to see, but that might take a while. Off to Oklahoma in the morning!

It was a pleasure to meet you, Lady Rebecca, and we bid you safe travels for the remainder of your trip.

I was pleased that I was able to again fend of the threatened rain. I have never been rained upon at Scarby ... but going by last Memorial Day weekend, and this opening weekend, I have damn sure been heated upon! Yoiks!  Today was actually measurably better than yesterday thankfully.

We did have a marvelous time, as did our traveling companions. Our first time seeing Arsene, and highly recommend his show to all! We didn't see all the shows we wanted to, and Nimue wants to make another trip down.  If the price of oats continues to rise, we'll be lucky to be able to afford the trip to the mountains for RenDezvous! But we may indeed try to squeeze in another trip to Scarby this season. (Have the governor turn the damned thermostat down!)

It was indeed a marvelous Opening Weekend!  Very nice to see you again, Merlin the Elder (several times throughout the day!)  I want to bid you & your companions, Lady Rebecca and all those who are traveling home tomorrow a safe journey  :)

Sorry I didn't get to meet you, Lady Rebecca, but I believe I got a pic of you at the Chess Match yesterday.

It was also most agreeable to see the "younger" Merlin today...I got a couple of nice pics  8)

...I think the latest opening statement is...

Okay, so I'm sitting here checking the weather for the trip back. I heard some storming earlier, but I had been expecting that. Nim looks out of the window and says, "Merlin," she always calls me that, "Are those news trucks out front?"

I look out and reply, "Aye, m'Lady."  I notice safety tape across the drive. "Hmmm," I said to myself, "There is evil afoot! I'll go to the end of the hall and check through yon window." There was "stuff" everywhere!

So I say to Nim, "I'm going to go check on our carriage, Homer, the Odyssey." ... and when I got downstairs, I noticed that the top of the hotel was resting comfortably at the bottom of the hotel.  If by the time I get home to offload pictures you haven't already seen this on the news, I'll post a couple...

I'll describe the room fiasco when I'm not packing to leave... Ta ta for now!

As I posted elsewhere, the only big dissappointment was that I didn't get to meet many folks thanks to being either in the wrong place at the right time or being in the right place at the wrong time.
One of my great joys of faire is meeting new people so that was definitely quite sad.
Outside of that, I had a fantastic time. Lots of shows, shopping, and drinking at the pubs.
My favorite moment was on Saturday. We were at the Cat & Fiddle and decided to go out back and sit under the big tent. The big tent wasn't there so we just kind of stood there for a few wondering where we were going to enjoy our drinks. I decided I still wanted to sit at the picnic table but the burning orb of death was to bright. So, i grabbed one and drug it into the shade of a tree. The looks from the mundanes sitting in the heat as they realized the tables could move was priceless. We repeated this move later in the day on the front side of the pub and made several new friends who suddenly wanted to share our table.

*The rum don't like the sun on those 90+ days*

We were just downstairs for breakfast when a newscaster stopped and spoke to us. I apologize for my earlier levity as the damage was not just an isolated thing. Apparently, we were hit by some very strong straight line winds, or a tornado last night!!  Damage in Waxahachie (according to her) is fairly widespread.

ARE THERE ANY SCARBY STAFF THAT CAN TELL US IF YOU ARE OK???

Johnson County (Waxahachie is Ellis County) was fairly hard hit.  I hope every one is okay.

Opening Saturday was great. It's great to be back "Home" and not drive 4-5hrs to have fun. We particularly enjoyed the parade. Seemed like everyone was in it and it lasted a lot longer then we expected. Thank gawd they had the misting bridge going and everyone seemed to know of the mister that's more like a hose.  ;D

I too would like to know how the park faired in last night storms. Most vendors I know pack up and leave and were well on there way before the storms hit. Hopefully it was only structures harmed and not any staff.

This is the first time I managed to get the PP out of the house in time to make it to tail gate.  We had alot of fun just hanging out.   Since the PP is part of an improve troupe I think he really liked the opening play that hey did.  I was surprised that it didn't take long to get inside for us with the FOF pass. The morning was really nice.  I really enjoyed how the new crown stage looks it's beautiful and the accoustics are great.
The only downer was the heat.  The pour PP spent the morning walking around in his 'couch' of pirate coat.  It got ditched, along with his cravat right after the parade.  It was also at that time that he stated I'm making him a linen long doublet with NOT SLEEVES.   ;D (Funny enough when he stopped into Joanns on Sunday to get me a new zipper he found the last of a bolt of the same pink linen as his pants.  He bought all of it.  ;D  ) Guess what I'm doing this week?
I actually faired better than I thought I would.  The only real problem I ran into was that after being on my feet most of the day, they tend to swell :(  Thank goodness my mocacins can be looseded.  Another reason I love them.  I'm still plotting one more new 'cooler' outfit.  Though I have to say the cigar tube full of ice was the best thing for both him and I. I was just amazed how quickly it was melting.  Oh and I have to say the FOF pass paid for it's self this weekend with how many gallons of gatorade  the two of us drank that day.  Oy!
We ran into quite a few people  on saturday, saddly not all of them introduced themselves.  They knew who we were because of the PP's pink coat but they never said their names.   It was nice getting hugs from so many people yesterday, and for once feeling like a bit more like myself.  And it didn't hurt that for once I dressed and felt like royalty. :)

I was just reading the storm reports from last night on the Storm Prediction Center's website, and when I saw that Waxahachie had had a possible tornado, came to this forum immediately to find out if Scarby and those in it were okay.  Glad to hear there was only some minor damage and everyone was all right!

Lady Morna

P.S. We plan on being there during part of Closing Weekend, and we're trying to make a trip down there near the end of April as well.

Both days were really fairly good for us. The heat of course was unpleasant, but staying hydrated and keeping to the shade helped. The new Crown Stage was something, and Adam Crack had stepped up his show even more - the fave of our newbies who came along. Was able to meet a few of you, and saw some of you from a distance. Admittedly there were some folks I saw that I THOUGHT were in our forums, but wasn't sure. Even introduced myself to someone who had no idea about our group on rf..com. Will likely get a new member or two from that meeting. We spent too much money on some great stuff, had a turkey leg and cinnamon nuts among other foods (hit the bakery hard both days). Only complaint - and I am just making a minor remark....We love Iris and Rose and always get a kick out of there shows, and did on the one we attended on Saturday. But, we had a couple of folks around us who sang along so loudly that especially our guests couldn't make out what Iris and Rose were singing or saying (these folks even knew the jokes by heart). I could even tell that others around us were a bit aggravated. And the "accompanying singers" seemed so proud that they knew the songs. I know most of the songs and jokes too, but it's just not as enjoyable when folks around you are muddling up the show so that you can't understand it. I know we like to be a part of the show and feel like we have a part in the Faire, but we had talked up the show so much that our guests thought we might have exaggerated a bit. It's sort of like someone sitting behind you and talking the dialogue of a movie all the way through the movie, I'm happy they know the words and feel a kinship with it, but just sing to yourselves maybe unless I & R asks you too, and if no one agrees on this, that's fine...just a mild suggestion. We are all generally type-A personalities at the faire and like to be the life of the party, but you gotta back off sometime and let the entertainers entertain. Now, besides that tiny little thing...it was a wonderful weekend at Faire!

I was reading fast and I thought you wrote that you took a shower with Al-Nimer.... I gotta lay off the Jack D!

We made it safely home, in case anyone is interested...

I promised a photo of the hotel. Nimue and I were on the 3rd floor center. Homer, the Odyssey, was maybe 10 yards from the wreckage there, and he escaped unscathed. I'm glad to hear that the damage in the shire was not extensive.

The newscaster I spoke with, if she is going to cover weather events, she needs to understand some basic terms. Concerned about Scarby, I asked her what the storm track was, and she had no clue what I was asking. I then counted on getting the good information here. As I said before, I'm glad everyone is safe.

Wow. And here I was complaining about having no power at the Super 8 this morning.

To add to your picture, I found this video online:

It's the 2nd video.

But honestly, I had no clue until I saw your post that anything more than a bad thunderstorm had happened. I woke up around 2:30am because of a loud crack of thunder, and noticed the power had gone out. And was quite peeved when it was still out in the morning, and I had no lights or a/c. But I didn't see any actual damage around the Super 8 at all. I'm glad you and your party and Homer are all alright, Merlin! Did you hear anything strange during the storm?

Nim thought she heard something, but I've been known to sleep through some pretty loud stuff. When I was young...about 10 y.o. maybe?... a B-47 bomber crashed in my neighborhood in Little Rock.  I slept right through it, while it knocked one of my brothers out of bed.

Thanks for the links. The Super 8 had roof damage on the North end and water got into some of the West facing 1st floor rooms. Not even 1/2 a mile down 35 going North a business was just about destroyed and large chunck of it were strewn across both sides of 35. I have no confirmation but it looked like a tornado took a short jog across 35.
Glad to here everyone is OK.

I had the same thing happen to me at the Queen Anne's Lace Tart show. I Love Queen Anne and have a few of there CDs but I have never seen there tart show. The guy sitting behind me however had seen the show many time. He know ALL the songs and punch lines. I could not enjoy the show with this guy singing (vary badly) as loud as he could and ruining all the jokes. I am surprised he did get up and ask for tips.

Her Imperial Highness, the Archduchess Sabine, and His Royal Majesty, King Henry VIII, were peeking out of their trailer-castle window watching the entire Fury-of-the-Heavens.
My wife, Susan, and I stay on-site from Friday night to Monday morning.
Gosh, what a show!

Meanwhile, a certain fearsome Spaniard* was huddled in the middle of the RV* with an almost equally freaked out dog. Not gonna lie; I was seriously terrified.

*Esperanza de la Noche, which is to say me, who is brave in the face of everything except spiders and tornado warnings
