After not being able to make RenDezvous at Scarborough last year, (stupid unemployment! >:( ) I've been hoping the stars would line up so I might take the Zardoz show on the road up there this year. I actually have been there before, but it was a brief visit over a decade ago, and I honestly don't really recall it very well, so bear with me...
So, a few stupid questions;
How far in time/milage is the faire from the Super 8, or Best Value Inn?
I see the gates open at 10 (?), does one need to get there a little early (8:30 - 9ish ?) to avoid the traffic, like at TRF?
I see there is a 'Club Membership' deal at the pubs, I know how that works. But do folks bring flasks in? Anyone ever have an issue with it? Are the beverage choices any good?
Is there a regular R/F meetup time/place at the faire?
Since I'm likely only going to have one day, what are some things unique to Scarby that I need to see?
But do folks bring flasks in?
I spoke with some of the vendors this past weekend. Because there is now a pub that has a full bar, not just beer, the TAF men are SERIOUSLY cracking down on people bringing in flasks into faire. I know people do bring in flasks, but just this year they are looking for them because the feds are cracking down.
I'll let other people respond with the happy information. ;D
As mentioned on one of the other Scarby threads, the ladies of Queen Anne's Lace are a (mostly) North-Texas local singing group. They have performed at TRF, Excalibur, and some other Faires, but Scarby is the place to see them.

You're less that 15 minutes away regardless of where you stay in Waxahachie. We normally stay in north part of Waxahachie off of US 287/77 and we get there in just a few minutes.

Traffic isn't nearly as heavy as TRF, as I remember, but there's lots of camaraderie if you come early. The play starts around 9:40 or 9:45

I haven't been since the full bar became fully operational. It was just beginning to draw bar flies on opening weekend. I never carried a flask in to start with, so I don't know the reaction. As for the Feds being involved, I couldn't imagine what their interest would be, as it's a state and local issue. And not being a Texan, I don't know how the staties and local constabulary react. HOWEVER: In Arkansas, bringing alcohol into a business that is licensed to sell can cost that business its license. They are responsible for alcohol consumed, whether they sell it or not. If they call you on it, it would be in everyone's best interest to comply, as much as we hate to. As most faires, this is a business. As most faires we like to GO to, this one permits alcohol to be consumed on site. If we want to
keep it that way, we have to follow the laws, as ridiculous as they may seem, or it could end up a dry faire.

There was one opening Saturday at 2pm at the Dirty Duck (south end of the faire), but I don't know if that held as the "regular." It would be good if that were the case. But, if you announce
when you'll be there, I'm sure those in attendance will be happy to announce where to meet them.

Since I'm likely only going to have one day, what are some things unique to Scarby that I need to see?
I highly recommend our royalty, and our cast in general. Arguably, the only totally unique thing about
any faire is the cast. I happen to feel that our Henry VIII
looks so much like the portraits that I've seen, that he could be Henry Tudor reincarnated. He and his good Queen Anne and the Scots' Queen Margaret are more fun than you can normally legally have with your clothes on. They are, in my most humble opinion as a wizard, totally awesome, and the cast that supports them is equally wonderful. It must be completely obvious how much I hate Scarborough... ;)
First thing. I normally stay at the Suber 8 on 35 and bus 287. 5 minutes from Scarby. Exit the backside of the American Best which will you dump you out on bus 287 hang a right and then take a right under the overpass then follow the ramp onto 35 south and onto Scarby.
Second. A FULL BAR AT SCARBY!?!?!?!?. THis is the first that I have heard of it. Where is it or is it a Faire legend?
Nay, it is no legend! It has been opened in the Rose and Crown. I do not know if that will be expanded (another logical place would be the Cat and Fiddle), but I have seen it with me own eyes! A sight to behold! I saw—dare I say—JACK DANIELS on the shelf! I was so excited, I could not stand without embarrassment!
That being said, with the price that some of the brews have come to, I don't know that I can afford a shot of JD in the R&C!
Ditto all the stuff on flasks. They need to be a little more well hidden than you might be used to. You may get asked about them if they are visible. I was asked upon exiting after the parade on opening day and just said, "no, nothing in it", but the second day we went outside to meet our Prodigal Daughter and buy her a ticket and there were a few policemen outside. Since we had to go to the truck with PD (Prodigal Daughter, NOT the Police Dept!) I have left the flasks in the truck since then and plan on the same for future weekends. Not worth any potential hassle to me.
Second the motion on QAL, especially the Tart Show @ 5pm. Adam Crack (Fire Whip) is great. And yes, our cast is awesome! Scottish Court around 3 or 3:30 (sorry, can't remember!), near the Maypole is quite entertaining most weekends.
And Zardoz, kilt wearers are generally welcome to march with the Scots - meet up at the Scots Cottage around Noon (in to the left from the front gate).
Hope to see you!
I walked in with my customary rum filled boda bag and was never questioned in the slightest. Even topped off a couple of sodas at the bars and no one batted as eye.
*technically it should have water in it... but it never has before so why start now?*
You scoundrel! heh-heh! The flask, the silver exterior gleaming brightly in the sun, tends to draw the eye much more than the boda bag. Blessed that the constabulary are less attuned to the carrying on of the patronage!
I walked in with my tankard full beer, just like year...and my 10oz flask full of Vodka (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3443/3835004740_402b397c0c_o.gif)
Hey, I had no trouble getting in! It was getting OUT! Obviously I need to drink more... :-\
I really have to get to work... I thought I was a drinker... :D

You're hanging out with the right people :D
Thanks for the good info ! I hope to see everyone there!
possibly on the 30th...
Yep, good advice here Zardoz. Lets see...a 5th of Jack before opening cannon...how to smuggle a flask in, etc....nice! :D ;D

Word to the wise...
I heard from a vendor that TABC is cracking hard this year because of the bar, to the tune of a $500 fine for filled flasks. I don't know if the checks were going in or coming out.
Maybe one of our 'official eagles' could chime in about the 'newly enforced' situation?
Stalk well...
OK, The stars and my ducks have lined up, I'll be there on Saturday April 30th.
I'll be driving up Friday night, and staying at the America's Best Value, taking off again Sunday morning
I'll get to the faire by 9 am, and won't worry about bringing a flask!
I'll likely be on my own, and often require adult supervision, so hopefully some of the 'locals' will show me around their faire!
See ya' there! ;D
I'm sure Lady Kett and her Sidekick would be considered adult supervision. :-*
Unfortunately I can't be trusted.
Lady Kett and her Sidekick would be considered adult supervision by whom, Doña?!? Don't get the poor lad in trouble on his first visit to Scarborough! Be sure to keep an escape path in view at all times, Zardoz. ;)
Enjoy your visit to Scarby. Lady Kett and Sidekick make great faire companions, as do the Doña and Don.
Shucks, I was going to ask if Zardoz would share his adult supervision, LOL!
If I was able to come down, we'd all be in trouble.

Its the "Village Armory" on the map, not the Scots Cottage.
(They flew the George for St. George's Day this past weekend)
Thank you, Your Majesty! I should probably pay more attention to the map, eh? :-[ ;)
Yes on the map its the Village Armory however all the best dress people still call it the Scots Cottage mostly because it really annoys the English ;)

Yes, it's where the Scots go for a free handout! ;)
We are Scots what did you expect! ;D
"We are Scots what did you expect! ;D .... YOUR MAJESTY"
(You looking to lose your head, Angle?)
Thanks, Merlin, but the "handout" I speak of is the pikes for the Parade.
Anyone who WANTS to carry one of those is allright in my book!
Oh the pikes aren't so bad in many ways they are easier than carrying sword and certainly easier than the old pikes. Also easier that that long train we carried a few season ago your Majesty just happly we didn't have the wind we've had the last three weekends that weekend or we might have had a flying Majesty.
Maybe if this old wizard wore a tartan robe they would allow me to march with them! :D
