Title: What would YOU name a cat?
Post by: Mairte on August 18, 2011, 10:58:09 AM
Looks like we will be adding a cat to our household. (As in ONE...UNO...SINGLE.... ::) )
My choices for names are: Balerion the Black Dread, Meraxes and Vagar (After dragons in the George RR Martin Song of Ice and Fire series). Or as a fourth choice, Oberon.
My last cat was Moonshadow. Before that a pair, Sin and Bane. And before THAT, Balthazar. ;D
My daughter says "Oh great. Another cat with a name I wont be able to remember or very likely fail to pronounce correctly".  ::)
This from the girl who likes names such as Fluffy, Sparkles...well, you get the picture. We are at opposite ends of the spectrum. Sigh.

Maceo!! Then they could have their very own Jane's Addiction song!  ;)  ;D

My cat's name is Maceo
He's a little man in a cats body
He yawns just like I do
He's convinced I won't eat him
I think he thinks that I'm his dad
Because I saved him from the pound
Well we went down
Down to the pound and that's where we saw Maceo
Cat catcher said to me
"pick one out"
Maceo said
"let me out"
He sleeps right where I do and we wrestle in the morning!
He come to you if you don't bother him
He just likes to do his own thing
My cat's name is Maceo
He's a little man in a cat's body

- Kettle Whistle, Jane's Addiction

Otherwise I like Oberon.. :)

My cat's name is Girlz (as in Mama's Girlz, Baby Girlz, etc..) but never gets called anything besides Little One, Baby, Doodle Bug, or Kitty.. ha!

My cat is a 15 yr old Russian Blue... we fondly refer to as "Chucky", which is short for Charles Manson.  ;D

*If anyone has a RB, you know why the name*  ;)

I've got a Russian Blue too, my daughter named him Bonehead. Because we were getting another bonehead cat instead of a dog. lol Turns out to be a great cat, but daughter and he have always had a love hate relationship. One of my favorites was Bella Donna.

We weren't very creative with cat names. Our first cat was Kitty, and she was followed by Son of Kitty.

LOL, love it!  ;D  I have always had dogs around with cats interspersed here and there. My dogs are cat friendly. I just have to point at something, in this case, the CAT and say "Mom's! Dont touch!!". They wont even sneak a look. :D
Russian Blues....no experience there. Mostly have had black cats and a couple of Siamese.
Going with a black cat again. :)

LOL, we already have a bird named Bob. :)But I agree, I love the name!
I think I am a bit shot down in my search, I was so certain I was going to look for a male black or siamese cat and someone offered me a pair of five month old black females. I have even LESS of an idea what to name a female cat.  :-\
Oh well, may still find exactly what I am looking for. Going to take my time. It's like a family member.
I like somewhat medieval or fantasy names...
The last female cat I had my daughter named (she was five at the time). The cat's name was Alice Lady Bluegown.  ;D

I currently have: Bow (a shelter cat who, when she was young, was so bow-legged that her legs looked like parentheses), Mollie (who was already named when I got her), and Trinity (who was also named when I got him, but his name comes from the fact that he carries three mutation genes- hairless, though he is not; dwarf, which he is; and curled ears, which he has).

I am really of the opinion that it's better to choose the animal, then choose his/her name, based on the personality, etc.

I'm with Raevyn, our animals don't have names for the first few days (or week) until something comes to us.  My current cat's name is Wednesday (as in Addams - we used to have a flying squirrel named Pugsley too).  We've had Shay Leigh, which came from a character in an R.A Salvatore book.  We also had Nibbler, who eventually morphed into Sir Nibbler, the evil basterd cat.

yeah ours usually get named either via looks or something they did or do.
squirelly kept freaking out and jumping out of the box we figured she was a little loco how little did we know.
ty fooled me i thought he was a loving little thing(which he is) i just didn't know he stalked anything that moved no matter how little or big it was he was mad when i brought s80 home i had to tell him be nice she's ours i knew when he finally accepted her because he hid under a shrub and pretend attacked her. now he adores her and runs up to her

I have an exotic black Persian who's name is Cuda... she's a retired show cat that was headed to a shelter when my wife stepped in and said "oh no... she won't live another two weeks if you do that... i know just the right crazy cat guy..."  My wife now calls her "Demon Cat" and "Satan's Kitty"  :D

I'm assuming Cuda is part of her full name... and yes, crazy cat guy = Moi

Yeah, I dont actually NAME the cat/pet until it's in the household but I DO try out lots of names before the event!  :)
Once a cat is here, I am pretty decisive about the name and it is usually one I liked before he/she got here....
When we had Alice, we also had Isabella and Jeyne.
Thanks for all of the advice, I dont think I could get tired of hearing other peoples stories! :)

I had a dear friend who was fantastic at naming pets (she was a children's songwriter - go figure)  The strays she found under a bush in the 80's George and Barbara.  The sisters she rescued from a retiring seamstress -  Polly and Esther.

However, some of my all time fav's was Chaos and Lord Plushbottom for the hyper and and lazy pair.

Good luck

Since our cat is a stray we got at ren fest, we named him Ren Cat McGroundscore (RC for short). He has many nicknames though- Mr. Mooooostache, Mr. Whiskerface, Sheddy McShedderson, Kittenface, Fattyfattyfatfat and whatever else he is called at that particular moment.

I like to give animals long and ridiculous names and then call them by a shorter version of it. When I named my sister-in-laws iguana for her, he was Baron Von Viscious-pants Eqsuire the Third....called Baron.

I haven't had a cat in about 6 years, but I have had quite a few growing up. The last one I had was a flame point Himilayan/Persian male named Precious (I bet he hated that name, but he was so precious when I first found him behind one of the apartment that I lived in at one time, so the name stuck). As far as cat names go, this one takes the cake in my opinion. Some friends of mine had an all black cat (and a big fellow at that) who they named Cthulu.

Our latest addition to the critter family was a feral kitten that our other cat brought home. She was tiny, and we named her Itty Bitty Kitty and call her Bitty for short. She's gotten where we can touch her now, but she's still skittish. Oddly enough, she doesn't seem to be afraid of our Malamute. Good thing he wouldn't hurt her!

My kitty is a rescue that we got pre-named. His name is Psyche, but we call him Psycho because as a kitten he was SO hyper that he used to climb the screen on the door to the balcony on our 20th floor apartment, literally climbed a few of the walls in the apartment and had a habit of leaping at you out of no-where. We got a floor to ceiling climbing tree to save the walls in the apartment. After we moved into our house he started climbing the trees and has spent a number of nights in the tree since our 40 ft ladder wasn't tall enough to "rescue" him. His 10 years old and has mellowed a little, but still has his psycho moments.

You don't name a cat,it names it's self. At least Rohan did. She wouldn't come to anything untill one day the wife and I were talking about Return of the King and I said "Riders of Rohan!" and we heard these four little paws thumbing on the floor. She came to me feet, sat and looked up at me as if to say, "You called?"
Title: Re: What would YOU name a cat?

LOL, my cat Moonshadow's nickname was "Fat Thing". One of us would come into the house and call "Fat Thing, Fat Thing, where aaaarrrre youuuuu??" and he would come running.
Oooo. I like the name Cthulu for a black cat. ;D
Still looking. Cripes. When we werent wanting a cat, everybody and their brother had one they wanted to give up. Now? Nada. ::)
Except for those two females and after talking to my daughter again, we are certain we want a male cat....

All three of my cats were named by my niece: Gir, Zim and Nemo. They get called lots of other things, though, especially when they're swinging from the drapes or playing spider cat on the window screens.

If I had known there would be three, I would have insisted on Larry, Curly and Moe.

A friend of mine had two littermates named Mischief and Magic. Personally, I've always wanted to name a cat Piewacket. Not original, I realize, but few people I know would "get it", anyhow. ;)

I "get" Piewacket!  ;D  Good name.
I just went on animal control's site to look at the adoptables. My daughter saw one that looked just like our old cat (we had him 17 years)...I just inquired about him but we will just have to see. There was also a Himalayan. Contemplating. :) Do I WANT two cats? Not sure.

Our oldest was originally called Laylah, but that quickly changed to simply Meow. She is also on occasion refered to as 'Bucky's girlfriend'. The youngest was a feral that moved into our outside cat enclosure (neighbor issues) and we didn't want to name her as it would mean we would keep her. That was almost a year ago, and now the poor thing is going to spend its life as Kitten.
We've also got Bertrude (usually goes as Butt Rude), Monkey and Smudge. Smudge was the smallest of the litter and all black, so he was just a 'little smudge'.
You could always go for something Arthurian, like Mordred.
Title: Re: What would YOU name a cat?
Post by: Mairte on August 18, 2011, 06:18:35 PM
I LIKE Mordred. ;D  My childhood cat was Arthur.  :)
My daughter came up with some names too. Constantine, Alexandre and Nightmare.
She also said if it was a female, Alesana.
How come I get the feeling more and more it is going to be two cats?  ::)

Balerion is actually my favorite, I think...(and dont forget THE BLACK DREAD part of course!)
Yeah. I could just see my daughter getting her nose out of joint if I suggested the cat could sleep in my bed.  :D
I have some leads right now but as of tonight, no cats yet.
Oh well, it will happen when it's MEANT to. :)

I currently have Lucy (aka Your Highness, among other things), Kismet and Xena.  My prior cats were Alex, George and Pandora.  Last  year I fostered several cats, and had to think up many names.  I ended up with Gandalf (yes, he was solid gray), Houdini (he kept escaping from the enclosure, Gremlin (it suited him more than you can imagine), and Xena (who I kept).  In my continuous search for cat names, I found this great website: http://www.godchecker.com/.  It lists all names (and general characteristics) of gods and goddesses in all sorts of mythologies and religions.  Anyway, give it a little while.  Some cats end up letting you know their name.  Pandora did.  She couldn't leave well enough alone.

Well, currently I have a russian blue named Pearl (came to me that way) and 2 long haired black cats: KitKat (named by my 4 yo brother) and Reaper (as in Grim - ex hubby was a mortician).

If you get two, they could be Rigor and Mortis  ;D

Previous cats have been a brother/sister pair named Prince Darien and Sailor Jupiter (yes, little bit of a Sailor Moon dork)

one of my dear friends has 2 house cats: Duchess and Sir Vivor (he was a stray that wandered up, all beat to hell and back, and when he survived whatever had kicked his weed puller, and then started to thrive under their care, he was a survivor. There is also a pair of ferals, Panther (who may be what Sir Vivor fought with) and Smudge, neither of whom will let her near them, but they gladly eat the food she puts out for them, and have managed to avoid the traps she's set to be able to have them neutered (Panther) & spayed (Smudge) so she could keep them around to control the rodent population (she lives out in the country. Awhile back, Smudge started bringing her litter of kittens around, and my friend named them Smidgen (f), Mischief, Mayhem, and Binx (all 3 boys).  Eventually, Smidgen became an indoor kitty and has been spayed. The boys are still in/out, and Binx, sadly apparently met a nefarious fate, as he's been gone for several months.  There is now a new litter of babies from P&S, named Chaos (he looks just like Mischief & Mayhem), Baby Blue, and Sterling. The new babies won't even stay on the porch to eat if anyone is outside, but they no longer run when they see her inside.

Our first cat we had as kids was named Bumper.... she used to bump into things when she was a kitten. Then there was a tabby named Frisko. I had a black and white tuxedo cat that I named Bingo (not sure why but I did). My sister brought her cat, Slick, with her when she moved up from Florida. He ended up being my son's cat when she moved out. We had a little Russian Blue that we named Miss T Blue (Blue for short). My mom has a white cat that had a black spot on her head when she was a kitten. I told them to name it Spot but the name KiKi stuck (the black spot disappeared when she got out of kitten age).

I generally watch them for a bit before naming them and see what name pops into my head and then I try it out on them to see if they respond to it.

well, I guess  we don't put much thought into the pet names;

I got my wife a kitten years ago, and since we had a Harley, and the cat purred so damn loud,
  we named it Harley.

Our 2nd cat, I found in a parking lot under my old Dodge Diplomat, so it's named Dodge.

My wife found Cat #3 on the street after a UofH game, so it's named Shasta after the Cougar mascot.

My daughter's is a calico and mine will be either a black/white like a holstein cow or a tortoiseshell.
They will both be females.

Eeep. :o Best laid plans to go awry.
I was in town and got a call from my youngest daughter.
She said:
"I have a cat" and I said "You are joking!"...
She proceeded to tell me that someone almost hit a kitten in the school parking lot. They asked around but so far did not find who it belonged to though it is probably a stray.
Anywho. It is on the porch right now eating a can of tuna. She was starved!
So we will see how this goes. I guess we didnt find a cat, it found US. ::)

some of them find you we had a cat named Rascal that we think someone tossed out we heard him crying in the brush needless to say him and my cat were buds from then on.  mom had no intentions of getting squirrelly infact she wanted the little white male that i presumed was her litter mate mom would pick him up he would hope back into the cage squirrelly wouldn't stay in so mom took her. our boxer butch cassidy he curled up in my dads lap and wouldnt leave Luu Luu wouldn't stop playing with my parents when the puppy they wanted would have nothing to do with them. as for s80 she acted shy and quiet for the first day or two after that zoom zoom

Alesana ( my daughter picked the name as SHE brought the cat home  ::) ) is doing well.
More info about the kitten surfaced. Apparently a stray cat had kittens behind the school, five of them. This was the only one that hadnt starved to death or been hit by a car. :-\
I thought she might be feral because though she is friendly most of the time, especially when she knows you have FOOD, she is very fiesty. Whoa to any bugs on the porch, lol!  :D I dont see any flies, spiders, crickets etc..I am thinking she probably ate a lot of insects and whatever the mother cat brought in.
As said, most of the time she is a sweetheart and then can take it into her head to hiss and go after a hand or a foot! And is serious about it! ;D
On another note, I will be getting MY kitten on Saturday. We were going to wait for that other litter that was ready in six weeks but decided we want one of an age with this kitten so hopefully they get along better. The woman is trying to convince us to take the last two....sigh...
They are both black, males, one shorthaired and one longhaired. IF I decide on both, it will be Balerion (the Black Dread) and Meraxes. Then NO MORE CATS! ::)Three is plenty.
My daughter says she wont remember those names so will just call them "Bo" and "Mo". :D

Well the buggers can be sweet when they feel like it. And don't worry about mine, the postal service frowns on boxing cats and sending them priority.

Got the two black kittens! ;D  They tag team on my daughters evil little kitten.
Alesana only wants things on HER terms. If you pet her before she comes to YOU, its wrong. If you pick her up instead of her climbing into your lap, its wrong. If the boys (Balarion and Meraxes) eat before her, its wrong. If they get attention, that would never do. Well, you get the picture.
We kind of think she might have some Bengal in her because of the ears and her spots.
My guys have good tempers and are real laid back. Balarion is the smaller, fuzzy, more playful one and Meraxes is the larger, smoother haired, more mellow one.
If you would have told me a year ago I would like these kittens as much as I do, I wouldnt have believed it.
I forgot how peaceful it is to sit and read, relax with a cat in your lap. Or to watch "cat TV" when they are playing. :D

Just a short update. The kittens are doing well. My favorite is Balarion, a definite purring machine! ;D

Meraxes barely purrs at all, or at least very softly. It does make me smile too. :) At night they are on the front enclosed porch for the time being as they are learning about the litter box, though I have let them sleep with me some too, mostly when I have to be up doing homework (online college) and can keep an eye on them.
When they are on the porch, they are all waiting at the door in the morning for me and my daughter. LOL, like "we want IN already!!" :D
