Title: Scooters and Motorcycles
Post by: LadyStitch on June 18, 2008, 01:48:18 PM
Back in April when gas was just starting to ramp up the rogue and I bought 2 50 cc Honda scoots.  They max out speed wise at 38-40 mph.  We only take them on roads with a 40 MPH or less speed limit.

We went back a month later after we got our motorcycle licences to try out some of the 250/600/800 cc motorcycles.  Our dealer told us that they can't keep the 500/125/250cc scooters in stock.  Actually Honda has sold out of most of the 08 stock.  And it is not becoming difficult to find new 250 cc motor cycles.

For the moment we are happy with our little scoots but once the bug gets you can't help wanting a nicer bike.

With gas prices as they are motorcycles, and scooters are becoming  more and more popular (my scooter gets 100mpg, and my friends new bike gets 55mpg).

1)Do any of you ride?
2)  Like myself, are any of you seeing more and more scooters/motorcycles on the road?

What your thoughts on the subject?

I ride!!!  I have 3 motorcycles...all Hondas.  I've seen TONS of bikes and scooters on the highway since the weather turned nice.

I have a 400cc, 550cc, and a 750cc.  LOVE MY BIKES!!!!

I've been riding since I was 10. (Yes they had motorcyles back then. I even have a picture of me on a panhead at the age of 4.) After riding mostly British for the last 30 years I broke down and got a Suzuki Savage (650cc 4 stroke single). The lack of wrenching is wonderful.
Yes, in Houston at least there has been a massive increase in bikes on the road.

We ride...
I've had Hondas (including a GoldWing), Harley, Suzuki, Yamaha.
My current ride is a Royal Star Tour Deluxe

Wife rides a Suzuki S40 Boulevard (like Zaubon's)

I see a lot more small CC bikes everywhere!
Heck, my brother just bought a BMW K1000, and his son bought a Kaw Ninja... to save on gas... plus have some fun.

2. Its seasonal in the desert. Fry like bacon this month, drown in the moonsoon rains next month, then smooth sailin' through the winter till next spring.

Thoughts?
I bloody wish the big mfg's would ferget the horsepower wars and build bikes that real people can use and feel comfortable on.

I agree with you zaubon, the metrics are pretty maintenance free, although I do still want a harley. I bought my first street bike this year and am loving it ,although the wheels have to stay on the ground it's still fun. I use to have dirt bikes in my youth so it's kind of a return for me. The gas savings seemed a good argument for it.

We have a 1963 Honda Scrambler and a 2007 Harley low-rider.
And what is left of a 1983 Harley Lowrider.

Because of what is left of the '83 is the reason I refuse to ride any longer.
He lucked out and I like my face where it is.

Don't even get me started on the 2007...you don't buy a bike and then don't tell your wife for two weeks.

But that's a whole 'nuther story..... >:(

I don't need a gas powered scooter, mine is electric. (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y287/RumbaRue/pirateme-vi.gif)

It gets that much mileage, even with the Warp Drive at the back?  ;D
That orange glow is a Warp Drive, isn't it?  ;)

Nope the orange is just a reflector. Wish it was a rocket launcher.
I mean that would be really cool to just blow some of the bigger bikes that snicker at me.
Something James Bondish.
I putt at 30-40 mph put for around town a really don't need much.

The girls at work have named mine the Red Baron..

Ohhhh....I'm SO excited to see others that love the Savage!!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D :o

This is mine...I've had her about a year and a half!! 96 Suzuki Savage 650cc. I've changed her a bit since this pic...she's got a full back fender and 10 inch mini apes, and a few other minor changes.

It's causing a little confusion in Minnesota because scooters/mopeds under 50cc can be locked to bicycle racks and I believe do not require a motorcycle drivers license, but they cannot be used in bike lanes since they have motors.

Also, something  that does not go over 30 mph is classified as a "moped" rather than a motorcycle, so when a friend bought scooters for he and his wife they got them licensed as mopeds, and then had his tweaked so it would actually top out around 35 mph
