Title: 2012 Rendezvous Carolina Renaissance Festival
Post by: Lady Mikayla of Phoenicia on April 09, 2012, 07:15:21 AM
It is Spring and the 2012 Faire Season is underway!  Plans are coming together for the annual Rendezvous gathering to be held at the Carolina Renaissance Festival on Halloween Weekend.

We have procurred a very generous area for our use both days from 3 - 4:30pm for group pictures, fun & games.  Of course Saturday we will have the traditional Musical Men!

Sunday we go to you the people, what would you like to see offered for Sunday fun?

I'm quite sure that Lady Kett, and my own lovely Nimue would agree that you are asking a dangerous question around me... I'll respond when I can think of something appropriate for a more genteel conclave...

PS: We are very much looking forward to RenDezvous!

A couple of years back, at Maryland, they did a type of scavenger hunt where we had to go around and do things like -- and I am making this up because I don't remember a specific example -- count the number of dragons on the sign at the Dragon's Pub. I enjoyed that because it made me go around the faire looking at things I may have missed otherwise.

I missed the Pub Crawl at the Colorado RenDezvous because my hearing is so bad, I didn't hear them talking about it at the mixer the night before...

The pub crawl at CORF was fun! It wasn't required to purchase a beverage at each one, but to seek all of them out and get signed off by one of the servers. It really did have us making the rounds of the grounds to find them all.

The scavenger hunt sounds fun too....same end result of getting around the faire grounds.

P'shaw, you're easy. You just need some JD! ;)

Scavenger hunt sounds fun. I totally missed that at Maryland! Might be fun to do some sort of scavenger hunt with the R/F Members. Like finding a bunch of different people from the forums there to find their favorite show, favorite shop, favorite cast member etc etc. No repeating persons in your list (so if I give you my favorite show, you can't use me for anything else). A mix of scouting out the Faire and mixing (and hanging out with each other.)

We're staying at the La Quinta Charlotte Airport North, only because we got a very good deal through their rewards program. I don't guess we'll see anyone else there ... it's a bit of a drive from Faire.

However, we are open to changing that depending on where others are staying.

I have a room reserved just in case, but was hoping to see what the "official" hotel/group rates were going to be. Currently at the Sleep Inn Lake Norman, I think?

The Pub Crawl is an adventure close my heart, especially as we serve Guinness in Fairhaven (CRF). Finding them is not that hard but the crawl will take you from within an arrow's flight of the front gate to the far end of the village. You will definitely see the sights. And not to worry, it case you prefer something to drink that sunshine may pass through, there are other adult beverages available.

The scavenger hunt is also possible, and I think Lady Kett's idea should be incorportaed into it somehow. Thankfully, we have time to put that one together.

Where is everyone staying? Ian Robb is correct, the airport vicinity is a wee bit of a drive, not impossible since it will be the weekend and we'll be coming early for tailgate and opening cannon. In the past and as recently as two weekends ago for the Loch Norman Highland Games we have used the Microtel in Cornelius, NC. Usually we get a decent price and they have fridges in the room as well. Close to the food, drink, and pubs. The local committee should have a price to announce shortly. If you search on line for it, please do not be worried about lousy reports from several years past. the management we work with is newer than those "reports" and Lady Mikayla will take a look to make sure everything is above board.

Lady Mikayla has been in contact with CRF management and now that May has arrived we should start posting updates and definite information. We realize that with prices being what they are and will be, the longer you have to plan and look for deals the better. If you have questions, please don't be shy (not that being shy is ever a problem for an R/F crowd) and ask away. Somebody will have an answer (hopefully yhr right one).

I may have to opt for one of the nearby Hampton Inns. If all goes as planned, we may be watching our travel budget a little more closely. I may have enough points for the entire stay by the end of this month.

Looking at the Hilton site, the Cornelius NC Hampton can be had for minimal HHonors points... 15 minutes from faire, and it would mean "free" lodging for the weekend, and still have plenty of points left for other trips.  It's a few minutes further away from the pub, but that's fine...   Anyone familiar with the area? Anyone else planning to stay there?

The area is fine as its typical just off the interstate mix of hotels, fast food, and some small shopping areas. In other words, its safe and if you can get it with points, all the better. Its nicely placed for you to get just about anywhere you wish at an easy drive.

Sounds good, Hiberian. Thanks! As soon as Nimue nails down her vacation time, we'll book that hotel.

Also, I was just doing some research on one of my ancestors, and was stunned to find out that the Edna Mae Blumenthal Performing Arts Center exists in downtown Charlotte! We had no idea that she (my great-aunt) had been so honoured!  My granddad also had a photography business downtown, which his widow sold many years ago, but still bears his name: Kuglers' Studio. It appears that it is only a few blocks from the center.

Anyone form the Charlotte area know anything regarding these things? We're going to try to visit them when we come.

EDIT: I may have misread some material I found on the Blumenthal Center. I'll need to look further into that....

Alas, we will probably not be able to go. That whole "used up all your vacation during a leave of absence thing". Pout...Not 100% certain yet, but probably 99% no-go. <cry> Send pics!

We are not either - the young squire turns 13 the following Monday and it would not do him just if we were to be away the weekend.  Asked if he would accompany us and he does not want to miss any school (dang intellectuals :) )

Awww, sniff sniff y'all. We love y'all bunches and bunches too. And in both of our corporate americas, vacation doesn't accrue that way, Merlin. If you are just dying for details, PM me LOL. We are both out of vacation till 2013. And he's doing awesome! Family conference today at the rehab therapy place. Personally I hope they keep him unable to drive...it means I get to work part time <snicker> :)

Since I've not worked on a full time basis since my daughter was born 16 years ago, I can't say I understand a lot of the corporate hoopla regarding vacation days. Not that anyone wants to go without being paid, don't companies let you take unpaid vacation days? I hear people talk about not having vacation days all the time, but it seems to me that (if you can afford it), you could just take the days without pay.

Well, the one good thing is, all this reminded me put in a vacation request form. Shouldn't be any problem getting it approved, since I'm practically running the place myself over the summer ...

This meaning a lot of companies are now running all operations at half staff doing double duty work, which means they B&*%^ when anyone is off for ANY reason and vacation days just forces them to allow days off and they still do not like it at all. Unpaid days are not allowed. Last job I had, if you were sick and did not find your own replacement, you had to have a dr slip just for taking one day off for being sick. Of course they did not offer sick or vaca days at all anyway. Taking multiple days off in a row, you also had to make arrangements very far in advance or find your own person to cover your missed shifts.

(Yes, it's BS. But I'm pretty sure many are dealing with this issue )

I think I know what you're saying...each calendar year you get a block of vacation. We're both state employees, and vacation time accrues x-hours per month, depending on time served.  The truly important thing is a person...Sidekick. You're both constantly in our thoughts.  Maybe we'll come down for a visit just to be visiting y'all...

Wow, you are out of touch!  That would mean corporate America would have to be nice and care about you as a person. To them you're just a liability that makes them money and you should be grateful they keep you around :).

I think I need to apologize to all of you in corporate workplaces. I've been a bit flippant about the situation you are in. Sometimes, amid the silliness that is serving with a non-profit, I forget that I have something often sorely lacking in the workplace: an environment where I am a valued member of the team. May all of you find similar workplaces ...

Thankfully there are no big hills in Fairhaven, stick to the dirt pathways and you should be able to crawl back to the parking lot at the end of the day.

The pub crawl at Colorado was a wonderful way to get people to explore the entire faire grounds. The point was made that you did not need to purchase anything at the pub to get "credit" for going to the pub, thereby eliminating the concern for the under aged, prefer not to drink, and already drank too much, people.  ;)

Excellent point, MG. My wife and I usually walk around and try to see every shop -- at least, to see what it is and look if we're interested -- and find that an entertaining way to see the whole grounds when we are someplace new. But now that you say this, I'm thinking that while she does not drink and I will usually have at most one drink in a day, the pub crawl sounds like an excellent way to get around and be with the people we came to Rendezvous to see.

I believe we could also incorporate more than pubs into the crawl, perhaps like a shop or gallery crawl. While the very last spot at the far end of faire is a pub that also sells brats (it would have to be on the list so we get to the end) there is nothing that says we can't include different shops with various types of items along the way. Sorta like a cornicupia crawl. Could make it more interesting for everyone.

Saturday am will be tailgaiting and photo op before Faire in the VIP parking lot 8:30am!  Gates open at 10am.  Another photo op and musical men 3pm to the left of the joust area, behind wax hands.

Saturday night dinner will be at the Acropolis also in Cornelius about 6pm, after Faire!

Sunday 3pm photo op and treasure hunt finds.

As for hotel accomodations... the Microtel in Cornelius may be able to accomodate a room block for us however they will not know till early September.  Therefore at this time I recommend hotels in Davidson, Cornelius & Huntersville to be the closest in locale.  Charlotte will be a bit of a haul.

Are there any artisans willing to donate a hand crafted item(s) for our winner(s)?  :)

Delete this if it's the wrong place, but Ambard and I will be there for the Renn-dezvous! I just have to tell (many) someone(s)!

Also, we can donate two Faire-themed t-shirts for winners of the scavenger hunt if you like. My husband designed them with his hands (and his brain, which has 20 years of commercial art design experience) and I printed them with my hands in our sign shop, so they are handcrafted.

I will have group ticket information up shortly. Those who buy early and in quantities will be able to save about $2.50 per day. Not a lot but hey its about half a pint. Look for a new thread in a wee bit.

Title: Re: 2012 Rendezvous Carolina Renaissance Festival

keeps it at the top of the listing for that section - for those that don't do the "show unread posts since last visit" makes it easier to find and reply to.

Maybe you have already told us and I missed it, but do you have a Friends of Faire group or something similar that we can join for the weekend? Ours provides a place to store your things, free water/lemonade, "private" bathrooms, etc.

What's the general feel for flasks out at CRF? Not planning on trying to pack my loki with me, but thought about picking up something locally to put in it for fun. Will I get accosted by security and asked to pour it out? Or do they turn blind eyes to discrete usage? Thanks!

Discrete usage is definitely done.  However, being a smaller faire, it is a bit more of a challenge to find discrete.

Key word is DISCRETE. Security (grey polos, olive bdu trousers, caps and ever-present "I am Security" sunglasses) has been hanging out a lot at the corner pub, near the joust. This is near where we will gather for Musical Men, etc. But as long as you keep it on the down-low, you should be ok.

Great photos, Pinn!

Lord & Lady Spicer: You're looking resplendent, as always, in my very favorite outfits.

Merlin: You and Nim are looking good.  (One would never know what a dyslexic, fickle Wizard you are by your portrait!)

Ms. Trish:  Sigh!  (Is the brunette young lady shown with you in the 5th photo your "chaperone"?)

Would that the Duchess and I could have been there to meet the rest of you!!

Now that it's all said and done, it would have been nice to have a few more of you at RenDezvous. We would have gotten a chance to get to know Norfolk and his Lady a bit better...Gauwyn and his Lady are always a pleasure, and it would have been nice to actually meet some of the other folks I banter with on the forum.

I don't know if the administrators who chose the site ever are on the forum anymore—I haven't seen signs of their participation in a long time—but, I would suggest altering the method of selection of RenDezvous. I've only been to two so far, but they are definitely getting smaller. While that makes for a more intimate gathering, it seems to defeat the purpose of having an R/F gathering at all.

We would have attended except for the fact we still have a child in school (and it was his 13th birthday). Summer months are a bit better for those with children.

The Duchess and I truly wanted to attend Rendezvous this year, especially since our cast roles in Colorado prohibited us from participating in most of the Rendezvous activities two years ago.  Alas, logistical problems and a family medical issue -- The Duchess' 88 year-old father is in failing health -- prevented us from making the trip.  We appreciate all of you who have told us that we were missed, but I assure you we missed you far more than you missed us.  Consequently, we're waiting with great anticipation to learn where Rendezvous 2013 will be held -- assuming, of course, that the Aztecs are proved wrong.

I'm planning on going regardless of the Aztecs. They aren't invited anyway.

My thoughts are with the Duchess, your Dukeness. Sadly, I've experienced this part of the life cycle with both my parents now. One must consider the blessing of having had their company for so long. Having that many good memories eases the transition.

I'm sorry I could not attend this year as originally planned.  After losing my job at the end of January, and still unemployed to this day, it just wasn't feasible.  Perhaps the next!

As far as the selection process, so far there has been no one "perfect" way to do it.  I can guarantee that not everyone will be happy with the fair that is chosen, regardless of location.  The idea is to move it around so people in different areas of the country have the opportunity to attend.  If we were going for overall attendance, it would just be in Texas every year, and that somewhat defeats the point.  I'd like to think all members should have the chance to attend at least one, and the current selection process is the best way of ensuring that.  I myself have only had the opportunity to attend one Rendezvous.  Am I sad that I haven't been able to attend more?  Sure, who wouldn't be.  But I'm also pleased at the number of people who have been able to have the same opportunity at least once.

The selection process for 2013 with begin soon!

heheh... Yeah, probably!  I might offer a thought for consideration. If the bidding faires select a date BEFORE final selection, that might also help with the selection to get the numbers up. Since it fell on AHE weekend, nobody from Texas was willing to give up TRF's big weekend. I guess we were about as close to Texans as there were.

Having it at various faires is important, most assuredly, but so is having participants. Glad to see you're still around...

DB has it right, someone is always unhappy with the choice or the process, no matter what.  After many discussions of the best way, the way that it's been done has been decided upon as the most fair...And believe me, we've heard just about every possible way to do this over the years.

Glad you and Nyte made it to TN, btw, DB! :)
