Title: Yay! Visiting Scarby for the first time!
Post by: BarbarianQueen on April 24, 2012, 12:44:27 AM
Finally able to make a trip to Scarby!  I've read all the posts here for years, looking forward to coming.
ONe question - as the name suggests, I usually go in Barbarian Garb to TRF.  I don't see many Barbarians, and especially Barbarian Queens :).
Is Viking/Barbarian garb OK for the festival? I realize that period/era Nazi's won't be happy :(, but I deal with those at TRF as well, so used to it :)
Cheers!

Welcome to our beloved Shire!
Usually Scarby is too hot for the fur-n-leather crowd. But you are certainly free to wear whatever you feel comfortable in.
This coming weekend looks to be warm; though not frying pan hot.
Do try to make the 8:30am tailgate party on row 12.  ;D

We've actually had some great barbarians at Scarby in the past. I certainly have no problem seeing them at faire.

I don't know that barbarians are completely anachronistic ... there are current-day barbarians in the news every day! :-\  They are nowhere near as nice as the barbarians that come to Scarby.

I've seen a faire-share of Harry Potter characters running around so a Barbarian Queen will be a better fit.

Isn't this weekend the SteamPunk invasion anyway?

Either way COME ON UP! The more the merrier!  ;D

Welcome and we look forward to seeing you. I'm sure you will have a great time and come over to the Green and Yellow Gypsy Wagon by the Crown Stage and say howdy, plus we do have Vicious Viking T-shirts.  ;D

Plan to be there on closing weekend!
How attended is the Faire on Memorial day?

VERY busy that day :-) We get a lot of military and former military that come in especially for the Veterans part of the parade that day.

I would guesstimate that Memorial Day is probably the most busy day of faire season... Not only is it the final day, so many are drawn in for a last chance at faire for the season, but as was stated before, many people drag their veterans who would not necessarily normally do faire to have them march in the parade, and be fawned over with thank you's all day. There will be plenty to do, and lots of people to meet! Looking forward to meeting you! And welcome to our little corner of paradise. ^_^

Thanks all!
Say... what's the rule for blades?  Are they allowed, if peace-tied?

I have several rather large, beautiful damascus daggers that I'm rather fond of :)
Would I be allowed to wear one if tied?  If so, can someone recommend an accepted peace-tying technique?
Thanks

Weapons ARE allowed but need to be peace tied and NEVER unsheathed.

That weekend will be packed...it's the funnest weekend ! !

Come to Row 12 at 8:00 for pre-canon tailgate...eats and drinks.

I would wear as little as possible (not being a perv) just saying.... if you cover up in fur... you will die.

It will most likely be high 90's that weekend.

Looking forward to meeting you! Peace-tied blades are fine, as Merlin said. And yes, fur will be quite toasty Memorial Day Weekend. But it does look like you have some air conditioning built into it! ;)

...as for peace tying technique, anything that ties the blade into the scabbard so that it cannot be easily drawn will work. I look forward to meeting you.

My only suggestion is to make sure that whatever you wear is family-friendly.  Scarborough focuses on being a family faire, so if you're not sure if it is too risque, then it probably is.  I'm not saying that everyone has to be covered from neck to knees, but the folks at the gate WILL send people back to the car with the request that they put on a few more clothes if necessary.  It doesn't happen often, but it DOES happen.  So have alternatives ready if you're really not sure about your normal costuming.

Just my thoughts. :)

There have been a few that I wish the fashion police had been on duty to save my eyes from a thorough eye-bleaching. Had the fashion police have been there, these people would have been charged with crimes against humanity.

I am rarely critical of what someone wants to wear, but there are some bodies that should not have much showing, mine included. It holds for both sexes.

THanks for the heads up.  Just curious - would you consider TRF a NON family-friendly faire?

TRF has its family friendly areas, but it also has some practices / customs that verge more on the "R" side of things.  Scarborough works very hard to keep things on the PG-13 end of the spectrum, with the few acts that go beyond that mostly located in the same pub so that it is easier to let parents know that they may want to consider the content before taking their children into that particular pub. :)

Thanks, and I agree.  There are events and shows that I don't go to or participate in, and even ones I won't let my boyfriend watch  ;D (can anyone say "Chainmail fashion show" .  I admire the Moxie of the gals who volunteer to do the modelling, and have been asked to join by friends who DO participate, but...NO WAY .

I try to overcome any off-putting or suspicious impressions by exercising a super-firendly, sunny personality!  I am always amazed at the number of little kids that run up and start talking to us, and parents who want to get their kids photos with us.   I LOVE kids!  And, I find it really amusing that anyone would want their photo with me/us.

There was a couple that used to do Scarby. Her outfits showed skin, but I never thought it to be too much.  I always enjoyed seeing them.

I also have a question. I didn't know Will, the pickle man, as I've not done pickles at faire.  I took this shot many years ago. Is this he?

Meh!  I've been to Florida and there's a helluva lot less covered up on the beaches, and every Ren faire I've ever seen shows beaucoup boobage. Your own avatar supports that observation.  I don't find anything distasteful about a nicely assembled person showing some skin. Keep the naughty bits covered, and I'd have no problem taking a 6-year-old to faire.  At the beach, you wouldn't even need to cover those.  It's the human body...we've all got one!

The final decision is in the hands of the faire management, and is going to be based on what kind of audience they are willing to cater to.

And I consider a tushy to be a "naughty bit".

Personal opinion.  Not trying to say anyone else's is wrong or right.  I don't believe thongs are appropriate on the beach either.  Just saying that I am glad I know what is/is not permissible at certain faire so I know which ones to visit/avoid.  Many people boycott/avoid MDRF (my home faire) because of the no weapons policy.  I don't have a problem with it.  Just a cultural difference  :)

I've seen BarbarianQueen @ TRF, though never met her - hopefully we can meet up when you visit! I think you will be fine, hon. I believe your garb is quite tastefully put together. Some skin, yes, but the important parts are covered. And you have the body to pull it off. I however, could not pull that off! :)

If in doubt, perhaps a light cloak/cape. (emphasis on LIGHT!) I'm actually running down to the office of Scarby tomorrow, I can take a pic and ask if you are really concerned!

I have also seen BarbarianQueen at TRF and don't see were it would be a problem,  certain a lot less of a problem than the "gentleman" in the mini-skirt last weekend or the guy in the pink hot pants with yellow shirt last year.

no offense Serenity but unless MDRF is searching all the patrons to verify that no is carrying a pocket knift and stops anyone wearing a leatherman mult-tool from going inside why should I be stopped from wearing a Sgian Dubh or dirk? ???

I'm always surprised by what people think of as weapons.  I've had people ask me why I have no weapons when I'm using a 5 foot 1 inch thick walnut walking staff,  I've tried explaning that my staff is a better weapon than 90% of the swords most people carry at faire but people just don't see cains and staffs as "weapons" even while they are some of the most dangerious weapons in the world.

Ah, well.  Looks the same to me—boobs and bums—they're just pointed in a different direction.

Sir Richard, as I entered the Colorado Faire last season, they were checking weapons...I asked them if they needed to peace-tie my staff... you've seen it. They looked at me like I was nuts.  In fact I am, but they didn't know it.

I always get in trouble when I open my mouth...so why should this time be any different?

There's obviously a difference between skanky whore and beautiful attire. Where is the line? Hard to say.... who am I to say?
Well...I have an opinion and we all know that opinions are like bottoms... everyone has one.

Many of the ladies look very elegant even though 99% of their boobs are showing in those push ups. I swear... I don't know how I've gone to faire for as many times as I have and never a nipple one has popped out. But it still looks like royalty...very elegant and beautiful... not skanky or distasteful. Now...if someone wears a "barbarian" top which isn't much more than a couple of fox faces on their boobs...but covers over 50% of the boob.... some consider that to be offensive. (for the record...i don't)

Let me back up for a second...I'm nae trying to change anyone's mind or opinion...simply offering mine because i'm off work...until Tuesday..YAY... I've done all me chores and I have time.

I've very.... liberal? Is that the term? My basics have always been... If you don't like pot, don't smoke it. If you don't like alcohol.. don't drink it. If you don't want a gay marriage...don't get one. Just don't infringe on my rights or interfere with my day. (I don't smoke pot and I'm not gay but couldn't care less who does or is)
If someone is wearing something obviously offensive...I move on. I understand about the children... I do.

ALSO... none of this is directed at this barbarian lady.... just chatting here. However...about her bum.... it's covered by chain mail. There are belly dancers and playtrons who wear chain mail bras where only the nipple is covered by fabric... and I don't find those in the least bit offensive or trashy.

I also don't care if Darth Vader shows up..... Once inside the walls... I am Merlin Gunn, Clan Chief of Gunn Caithness. All reality stays in the parking lot...I have many GREAT friends inside those walls.... those are the people I choose to converse with...have lunch with... share a nip from the flask with. I enjoy faire and unless you interfere directly with my day.... ie.. try to get me to participate in lane antics that are offensive or obnoxious... I don't care what you do or what you wear.

If I've offended anyone...I shouldn't have because I only gave my opinion and we all know how valuable THAT is.

ROW 12 ... 8:30 ... Saturday... I have 2 bottles of champagne for mimosas ! ! ! !

Bahaha... Dad... they KNEW you were nuts when we first walked in the gate at Colorado...that's why they didn't respond to you.

Seriously though...Sir Richard is right... a staff in the hands of a person who knows how to use it is way more of a weapon than a battle axe is in the hands of a 17 year old who has only used one on the X-Box.

That's my boy!  Well-spoken, son.  I have infinitely more respect for someone garbed for the occasion, such as BarbarianQueen, than some muggle with their arse hanging out of their ripped jeans. I've seen both at faire. One has gone to great lengths for a persona, the other is just too damned cheap to buy a new pair of jeans.  That may be the trashy whore you speak of, young Merlin.

Sholo nearly squeezed your mother Nimue's nips out of her blouse during his act a couple seasons back! It very well might have caused a stir!

I have an 8 year old who comes to faire with me as a "Guardian of the Fairies".  I would not be concerned with him seeing BarbarianQueen in that outfit.  He knows what a butt looks like and he knows what cleavage looks like.  I think for me, in regards to kids, it's more about the behavior and the words that are spoken.  When we went to Scarby a few weekends ago, I was far more upset by him hearing an inappropriate joke about fairies, that was told in front of him by someone who wasn't thinking, than I was by anything anyone was wearing.

I think if you're revealing a bit of skin, within reason, and acting in a respectable manner when there are kiddos around, there really isn't an issue.  :)

off topic but Merlin I always get a big laugh when the police stop the teenages at cons and checks their wall hanger toy swords while I go by with my oak cain.  Sorry guys but 20 years of martial arts training makes my cain a thousand times more dangerious than those swords and you can't see past your blind spot to know that.

I think the line is blured by the character played, and the personality of the individual... if the BarbarianQueen was going up and sitting on people's laps, and groping people, and flashing people due to easy access that would be skanky...  but if she is walking around minding her own business playing with children, engaging in conversations, etc, etc... it's a character and is beautiful!  I personally feel that it is the person that makes the garb... the garb doesn't make the person

Make your presence known to me Memorial Day weekend, Otwell.  I've some peripheral experience with the Marines. My high school was the second high school in the country to be commissioned with a JROTC unit. I was in the first class to go all the way through the 3-year program. Our drill instructor was a retired drill instructor instructor from Parris Island. He was an extraordinary man, and we got along extremely well. You couldn't tell by looking at me now, but I was the commander of our precision rifle drill team my senior year.

Actually, thank heavens for the Amish Communities, as they somehow manage to spiritually balance out the Jersey Shore, just a few miles away.  Otherwise, I think NJ would be in danger of breaking off and sliding into the ocean. - This is great and so true!  Something has to balance out THAT mess!

Pennsylvania actually recognizes this, and has anticipated this event in selecting their state Motto - " Pennsylvania - America starts HERE"  (as opposed to with it's more Easterly sister state, NJ.  I remember New Jerseyans being pretty insulted when they published this). - Interesting fact.  Learn something new every day

Anyway... all in fun!  I really do appreciate your input, Serenity, but couldn't resist posting back   Absolutely!  That's half the fun of it.  I'm glad you didn't take offense to my opinion.  You do have a lovely figure!

Actually, it's good to be reminded that people have differing views on attire, and what's appropriate. Yes, that is all I was trying to say.  Not start a fight or anything.  I guess I was born in the wrong century.  People are always saying I'm "wrong" for being a bit prudish, but it's MY opinion!  Sheesh!  Thank you, Barbarian Queen for recognizing this.

When I read your post, I couldn't help but be reminded of the moment in the Danish fable "The Emperor's New Clothes", when, after everybody had commented favorably on the Emperor's "new" (but nonexistant) clothing, the little boy ran up and said,
"But...he's NAKED!!" LMAO!  Yes!!  That is the response I was going for.  I was trying to be funny, not mean ;D

You should hear our history, customs and manners instructors talk about the going on in the French court and the Italians were even worst.   And of couse people of that century not only shared bath in the local bath house families not only shared the same bedroom they shared the same bed somethings three and four generations.  The closer people live to nature and each other the less taboos they have on nudity.  But I understand what you mean I grew up in western PA and my family is totally scandalized that I wear a kilt.  Of course my family is scandalized by just about everything I do which is why I'm so glad to live in Texas.

Barbarian Queen! We saw you at the Cat & Fiddle Saturday, and I would have come up and introduced us to you and your companion had we not been in the middle of a wine-tasting. I tried to catch your eye to acknowledge you without interrupting the tasting...I think your S.O. noticed.

Your garb seemed fine to my wife Nimue and me. Hopefully, if you're back Sunday and/or Monday, we can meet. Hope you enjoyed your first day at Scarby!

Barbarian Queen - I saw you at The Cat and the Fiddle as well!  Also wanted to come say hi, but I too had my hands tied due to the wine tasting... Maybe today if you are still around!

What time is breakfast, DC?

Had another lovely day today, but wore out a little sooner. We'll be there for tailgate on Monday, but we have to figure out how to hold out for the whole day...because of the heat.  Because of the distance issue, we don't get to spend as much time as we would like at Scarby. But this year we were there for opening day, opening cannon, and if we can hold out, we'd like to be there for closing day, closing cannon.

This has been a most glorious and memorable season for Nimue and me. We got to share our renewal with a lot of folks here, we got to share in Lady Kett and Sidekick's renewal, we made new friendships, and renewed old. We got to see Fireflicker this weekend! Fireflicker is the up-and-coming star of the faire circuit, in my humble opinion.

Oscar speech: I'd like to thank all who made this season special, Coy, Danielle, Richard, Shannon, Jana, Shadow, Lys, Doug (I think I've run out of the names I actually know), and all of the rest of the cast and crew of Scarborough.

I'd like to offer an extra special thanks to Bob & Melissa, Tammy and Jon, Sheila & Brett, Lance & Pam, Wes & Caroline...you don't realize the difference you have made in our enjoyment of faire...you're what makes it worth our while.

7:30 as usual.
But 4 dozen mini pigs will probably last until nearly 9:00am.

For us, it is many of the people, like you Merlin, that we have come to know and love that add another dimension to our enjoyment of faire. The people who don't get to experience faire through this dynamic don't realize what they're missing. Sharing love and laughter becomes almost like food or air. Once you've truly discovered it, you never want to give it up.

So I will add a special thanks to Merlin, Nimue, Lady Kett, Sidekick, Sqirl, Blushing, Archer, Sheila, Caroline, Pam, Isabelle, Matt, Matthew, Lys, Bill, Novie, Jeremy, Chris, Patrick, Robert, Jason, Susan, Richard, Janna, Frank, Bishop, Erin, Jessica, Allen, Ron, Jarie, Scott, Guillermo, Art, Ted, Holly, Peter and so many others that I can't recall your names this early in the morning. But you know who you all are. Bless you all for being yourselves.

That must have been right after we saw you at the Cat & Fiddle!

I wouldn't presume to know what prompted the ejection, whether it was management as a preemptive strike, or if they had received complaints from patrons. I think it was Lys that voiced a concern that there could be some issues based on her past experiences around the faire.  I saw a number of other outfits this weekend that I thought considerably more evocative than yours. No clue as to whether or not any issue was made of them.  There have been photos posted on this board that have been removed due to complaints by more conservative members, that I didn't think showed any more than I see at any given show at faire. Such is life, I suppose.

Sad to say, you have to chalk it up to the fact that this country has not yet accepted the human body as a normal part of life...yeah, go figure. In general, the country is extraordinarily conservative on that issue. Remember the "wardrobe malfunction" that caused all the stink a few years ago?  It caused nearly as much of a stir as 9/11.  We all have different opinions about things. It doesn't make one or the other right or wrong, necessarily, only different.

Management is charged with protecting the assets of the faire, and it may not always be fair, right, or even what they want to do. I'm so sorry your excitement for coming for the first time was taken away.

Well, sorry we didn't get to meet, Barbarian Queen. Ugh about Saturday! We will try to finally meet you at TRF this fall. I thought you looked lovely and I wish I had your figure!

Mean people suck. Karma will get them eventually. At least that's my motto in life.

Merlin, you are correct on all counts. Scarborough is a private business and property, and I bear them no grudge for running it as they see fit. The General manager said it perfectly, standing outside the park amidst a crowd of folk coming and going at the entrance -
"the church-going folk of our faire don't want to see you in it"

Message received.

I certainly was asked to pose for a lot of photos with said folks! From little tykes who wanted to see my mask, to kids who wanted to see my Damascus dagger, to ladies who wanted to know, "is that real fur?!", to grinning old men who asked, " Can I touch your fur?!" (umm, no!).
They all seemed happy to meet us and to talk and we were happy to meet them.

Yes, we were there!

To be honest, after the debacle on Saturday, I was all for packing it in an heading to the beach for the rest of the holiday. However, my D/H reminded me that we had paid for the four nights of our hotel in advance (non-refundable), and the General manager who asked us to leave the park was not of a mindset to refund the second day of our weekend pass.
Cooler heads prevailed, and after sleeping on it we decided to try again.  I'm glad we did, as we still enjoyed ourselves, and met and interacted with many more nice folks.

Odd thing, though.  On our arrival at opening Sunday, we were asked by no less than four fair employees in the first 15 minutes if they could take our photo. I couldn't help but think that this was some sort of tactic on behalf of the management, though to what purpose I can't imagine.

Confused?

Mean people suck.

Was it too much boobage or too much booty showing?
I didn't think there was too much of either.

Barbarian Queen, mayhaps it was the pub owners who requested you be escorted out as their customers were too intoxicated by your beauty to have need of their wares. There! Much nicer scenario than the churchgoer thing. :)

In seriousness, this happened at my homefaire a few years back. A chainmaille wearing friend who took pains to be sure nothing was indecent was still asked to leave. I never did hear a reasonable why. I believe it was because they had a rule of how much skin could be exposed and she was on the other side of the line. Like you, she never acted in any way other than a lady.  I guess when you have a business or have constructed some group, you have to set guidelines and adhere to them lest the next person try to stretch the rules a bit further. Some people make a habit of rule stretching just to see if they can.

Not saying this is your case. Anyway. I'm glad you had the chance to visit Scarby. Glad you gave it another chance. It's a good faire. :)

Sorry that happened to you BQ. Thank you for not blaming all church goers. I get really annoyed when the fact that I go to church is used to instantly form a (normally incorrect) opinion on what I think about things.  I'm not perfect but I try to remember this quote from Ghandi 'I like your Christ but I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ'. I did not see your garb but my DH did & he said you looked lovely. I told him if they kicked you out they should also kick out the woman I saw in Danes on Monday. She had on a tank top that was exposing over 1/2 of her boobs, including a good chunk of side-boob.
I hope you will return & not judge our fair by a couple of sticks in the mud.

BQ:  This is one time when I am sorry to have been right.  I saw your outfit on Monday and ALMOST came up and introduced myself and then got pulled away by someone for something.  By the time I looked back around you were gone.

I liked what I saw on Monday, it's a lovely outfit (Though I can't imagine how you weren't ROASTING! I can deal with wearing a couch, but not fur in that heat! *grin*)

I'm glad that you came back and didn't just abandon the faire altogether.

I'm not sure about faire employees asking to take your photo, though, unless they were booth folks? Or the clown photographers?  Or maybe the medics?  They sometimes have their camera there.  Cast members don't carry cameras and would never use something like that in the lanes.  And I don't think it was some sort of tactic by management.  They don't work that way at Southwest Festivals.

Anyway, again, I'm sorry to have had my suspicions met in this case, and I hope that you continue to come back and enjoy the festival in the future.  It really is a pretty darned good place, and I am sorry that your first impression was not as joyful as it could have been.

Honestly, I never saw ANY patrons giving me the "evil eye". In fact, just the opposite - we were quite often surrounded by happy, friendly people, many who wanted photos.

Maybe it was vendors, afraid that I might scare away future customers??

I am friends with quite a few of the vendors at TRF, especially the leather and armor folks (of which there are many more of at TRF) and pub owners/workers. In fact, I tend to bring folks around when we hang out at a vendors or pub.

I'm SOOOO very glad you came back...Scarborough is such a wonderful place. I have made so many very good friends there, and the political and religious gamut runs from "hell-to-breakfast," as the old saying goes. We tend to still like each other, God/Zeus/Buddha/Gaia knows why...

Our regret is only that we didn't get a chance to meet. I caught the eye of your DH (nothing inferred...mutual acknowledgment is all  ;)), but never caught your eye. Meh...old wizards don't attract beautiful barbarians too much...

Please don't let the turbulence of Saturday cloud your opinion of us. Scarby is a magical place, but it may have a little different way of looking a certain things. I hope to see you again, and to meet you!
