Ok, so again, I'm new to all of this as most of you know... Since Merlin the Elder mentioned he will be at scarby on "Memorial Day Weekend" and my wish is to get to meet as many of you as possible, my wife Elizabeth and I and I are going to try to make it that weekend.
I have a couple of questions first though.
1. I'm pretty sure that "Memorial Day weekend" is also closing weekend. am I correct?
- As a former US Marine, Memorial day means a lot to me. I would love nothing more than to be able to spend this weekend amongst new friends!
2. What about Memorial day, since scarby is open, what's the deal with that? is it a special ticket? what is going on that day?
3. Who all is going to be there that weekend? Who all do I get to meet!??!
4. This "tail-gate" party on parking isle 12... I'm assuming it's during the AM before the faire begins. am I correct? also, in this case, what time should I plan on arriving for this?
We are both very excited to be able to make it out to the wonderful town of Scarborough once more time this year!

3. Well, Don Juan and I will be there Saturday and Monday.
4. 8:30am is usually a good time for the tailgate party. Most people are getting dressed at the same time, so you will need to walk up and talk to us. In my case, look for the Spanish flag. Several people will be flying various flags associated with Scotland.

On Sunday, prepare yourself for some exceedingly strange sights. If the girl that walks past you in a prom dress looks like she needs a shave, she probably does. Sunday is Day of Wrong. You may wish to carry a gallon or two of eye bleach.
We plan on being around all three days. How active we are will depend on the temperature. Our last closing weekend excursion from Arkansas was so hot, we hung out at the Friends of Faire pavilions most of the time, venturing out for 30-45 minutes at a time. I'm hoping it's less brutal this year.

It is usually my tradition to Drink two beers on memorial day. One in memory of the past fallen, and the other in thought of those who will fall in the future. Every beer after that is for me and those I served with... hahaha

As far as I know, one ticket, one day. A two-day pass will not get you in all three days. Sorry! But there are discounted tickets available at local area Tom Thumb stores.

A weekend pass (good only for Sat/Sun) is cheaper than 2 discounted day passes. I
think the weekend passes may only be bought on srfestival.com. The discounted day passes may be bought at DFW area Tom Thumb stores.

Last year we had over a hundred (I think it was 126) vet's march, walk, ride in the parade. There is also a private Vet's memorial service held after the parade in the corporate pinic area. If you have any questions about the Memorial day parade just look up any of the QOH or SRG officers or NCO's and we'll be happly to answer them.

Also, any good recommendations on shoes my wife should get? keep in mind she is with child, so if you have any recommendations on shoes for a pregnant woman to walk around in all day and not have her feet kill her, I would greatly appreciate it!

For her safety and comfort, she needs to have shoes that support her ankles, have hard enough soles to not hurt when walking on gravel, and "new" is probably not a good idea. Flip-flops or moccasins, absolutely not. The heat could be treacherous, most ESPECIALLY for a pregnant woman. Watch the weather forecasts, and plan accordingly.
Pickle juice is first aid when you're getting dehydrated, but the trick is DON'T get dehydrated. If it turns out to be really hot, drink plenty of water, and watch consumption of alcohol and/or caffeine. The Throckmortoness may not be consuming alcohol anyway, but somebody has to drive home...
If you kids do any hiking, I would think hiking shoes would be comfy for her.

yeah, I was definitely going to make sure to get some good insoles for her soon anyway... it's getting to that point! We try to make sure to walk every day to allow her body to adjust to her rapidly growing size... she's kind of a petite thing anyway, so I know her body is like "WTF!!!" I'm surprised she did as good as she did the second weekend of Scarby!

I'll probably play the drinking thing by ear. I didn't drink anything the last time we were there... mainly, because we didn't know what kind of prices to expect as it was our first time, so we didn't come very prepared. and Two, by the time the pub-sing started I had gorged myself on food and couldn't fit beer in my belly!

Looking forward to our second three day at Scarby. We hope to bring several family members, both from the metroplex as well as a couple from here in Colorado. MErlin is correct that last year was quite warm, although a decent wind made it okay. We bring extra costume pieces for daughter and her husband, my sister, and our son with his fiancee. I really enjoyed being in the parade - they provide an abundance of water/ice for you during the trek through the faire site. My family liked it as well, I know.

Trivia note of the day: Gatorade was developed as a sports drink when some of the Florida Gators decided that they didn't like the taste of pickle juice and so worked to create a chemically similar substance that had a flavour they liked better. :)
We now return you to your regularly scheduled faire (which I have to be up and getting ready for in about 3.5 hours but I'm fighting a bout of insomnia. Hrmph.).

For shoes I recommend some Sketchers Mary Jane looking shoes. IMO they are passibly accurate (dark color & rounded toe) & they are pretty supportive.
For garb for her I'd go with lightweight & stretchy.

My whole clan (The McNuggats, including Richard McNugget himself) will be in attendance on Memorial Day. We are dragging my (might as well be) brother from another mother with us- as he has JUST returned from his last deployment to Afghanistan and we thought it'd be nice for people to fawn over him in appreciation all day. He lost several friends during this tour and came home with a heavy heart. What better way to bring up his spirits than faire?

I would hazard that Houston (TRF) in October is hotter than Waxahatchie in May. Last year during the drought/heatwave, we had temps in the upper 90's for opening weekend, and several weeks after.
Right now, its only a high of 88 in Houston (with high humidity). I would think that Waxahatchie would be both cooler and drier.
Any input on this??

Last weekend Scarborough had temperatures in the mid 90's with humidity ranging between 65% and 80%. By Memorial Day weekend, we should be hitting between 90 and 100 degrees most days, and it is pretty much tradition that it will rain on Memorial Day weekend at some point, making the humidity range from 75% to 100% :)
The last Memorial Day weekend we did, two years ago, it was 103, and last year, I heard reports of 100+ temps, but can't confirm that.
While it's true that Houston weather generally sucks...like year around...Scarby can sometimes be brutal, but also has its share of surprises. Accuweather is currently predicting below average temperatures for the the days, and I hope that is the case, but I'm not holding my breath.
Last few years Memorial has been a sauna. Merlin I hope the weather guessers get this one right lol.
IMO, closing weekend of Scarby and opening of TRF really are two different animals. We are not yet used to the heat at closing of Scarby, but when October comes around and it's time for TRF, we are more acclimated it seems and handle it better. I try to go with what I call 'garb lite' on Memorial, otherwise I am miserable and that is no fun.
Stay hydrated, see the pickle man for pickle juice when you need too. That will help a lot. I tend to lose my appetite when I get hot so I have to force myself to eat, because if I don't and I am enjoying adult beverages....well...MacKee will have me thrown over his shoulder taking me to the truck lol! :D
I save my lightest garb for Memorial weekend. Even if the temp is 94-97 that is still pickling hot. I have heard that 90 is the predicted temperature....but this is Texas.
There is only the one pickle stand so i hope the supply of pickle juice holds out.

The PP, Fuzzlet, and I will be there on Saturday. As some one who was prenant during last year's memorial day weekend it can be brutal. I will say for her to invest in a bodice chiller, good supportive shoes. For get period if it is to protect your back and feet. DRINK WATER!! I'll say that again DRINK WATER! Find shaddy spots to take breaks, and make friends with the 'ice man'. If you even think you are getting too hot, head to the first aid booth. They will have water and ice. Because I was concious of how hot it was I had a nice weekend last year (I was 5.5 months along then) Your better half can have fun but mind the heat.

Yes, we will have to be ever mindful of the heat... I would hate for my wife and young Jocelyn to overheat!
She will actually be nearly 30 weeks along for that weekend!
We got her some Mary Jane shoes, and some wonderfully light weight linen pants to wear... I'm pretty sure she likes the pants more than me right now!
Also, please remember that if she DOES start to get overheated, First Aid also has the Cold Room, which is a room with air conditioning. It is not for just anyone to pop into because it is a little warm out, it is to help with dangerously overheated folks, but it IS there. And really, the Boys in Orange would much rather that she come up there and ask to sit in it for a couple of minutes BEFORE she reaches the point where they have to come and get her. :)
Also, for everyone's information, if there IS a problem with anyone in your group (or another group), simply grab the nearest cast member and they can get help to you right away. There are radios at all of the food booths, and those folks can call for First Aid or Safety Services.
Again, please remember that when you call for help, you are pulling those resources from other parts of the park, so use the information with discretion, but if help IS needed then please get it! :)

We were going to go two days this weekend, but just can't get away for 2 days. We will be at Faire all day Sunday, from opening gate to closing gate. One more time..........until next year.

some people will be tail-gating in the parking lot, Row 12, as early as 0800 (some even earlier). I'm going to
try to make it by 0845.

Our intention was to close the season within the gates. The heat finally got to us.
I write this before the final cannon even fires, and I may have stated it elsewhere, but this was the best season of Scarborough for us yet! We're already planning next year. We'll see you opening day!
While it needs to be confirmed...it would appear to be about 312 days, 10 hours and 52 minutes until morning tailgate for opening weekend 2013! :)

It was certainly true for us as well, Doña. I haven't laughed that much in ages! If they could only temperature control the place, then we could go on and on.
