Title: Rennies are different because...
Post by: Lady Aldyth on June 27, 2008, 03:54:58 PM
IT HAS COME TO MY ATTENTION THAT TRUE RENNIES (THOSE THAT EITHER ARE ON CAST OR THAT COULD BE MISTAKEN FOR BEING ON CAST AT ONE FAIRE AT LEAST) HAVE BETTER ANATOMY THAN MUNDANES THAT HAVE YET TO BE BITTEN BY THE FAIRE BUG. BESIDES THE FACT THAT ALMOST ANY GIRL LOOKS BETTER IN A WELL FITTED CORSET (I DO SPECIFY WELL-FITTED... AS NOT MUCH LOOKS WORSE THAN A WOMAN A BADLY FITTED CORSET OR BODICE!), WE ALSO SPORT:
o   A STOMACH OF STEEL – THERE IS NOT MUCH A RENNIE CAN EAT THAT WILL MAKE THEM ILL! EXTRA POINTS IF YOU PLAY SOMEONE IN THE PEASANT CLASS. DOUBLE EXTRA POINTS IF YOU EAT DIRT EITHER ON PURPOSE OR ACCIDENTALLY AS PART OF AN ACT TO AMUSE PATRONS.
o   BUNS OF STEEL – BIG OR SMALL, IT IS A GOOD BET IT IS MUSCULAR FROM TRAIPSING ABOUT ALL DAY. EXTRA POINTS IF YOU PUT IN TIME AT MDRF OR SIMILAR FAIRES WITH HILLS GALORE AND A SET OF STEPS FOR GOOD MEASURE!
o   RAPIER WIT – I WONDER WHAT THE INCIDENCE IS OF RENNIES GETTING ALZHEIMER'S? AS NEW RESEARCH SHOWS THAT USING THE MIND STAVES IT OFF, THIS MIGHT BE WORTH STUDYING.
o   HEALTHIER SKIN – WE KNOW TO USE SUNBLOCK, EXFOLIATE OFTEN TO GET OFF FAIRE DUST THAT HAS MIXED WITH SWEAT TO BECOME FAIRE GRUNGE, MASSAGE EITHER OURSELVES OR EACH OTHER OFTEN TO STIMULATE CIRCULATION, AND USE SOAPS AND LOTIONS WITH LESS FRAGRANCES IN THEM SO THAT BEES DO NOT MISTAKE US.
o   BETTER LUNGS – EVEN THE SMOKERS AMONG US ARE LIMITED TO HOW OFTEN THEY CAN SNEAK AWAY DURRING THE DAY TO ASSUAGE A NIC FIT. EXTRA POINTS FOR THOSE HILLS AGAIN!
o   A KEEN KNOWLEDGE OF THE URINARY TRACT. IF THIS ONE DOES NOT APPLY TO YOU... BLESS YOUR MANAGEMENT TEAM FOR BEING WISE ENOUGH TO HAVE FAIRE IN THE EARLY SPRING OR THE FALL, OR EVEN WINTER IF YOU ARE SOUTH OR WEST ENOUGH!  THE REST OF US COULD WRITE BOOKS ON INTAKE VS. OUTPUT AND THE VARYING SHADES OF PISS THAT COULD BE USED AS BOOSTER SEATS!
o   HEARTS OF GOLD - NO EXPLANATIONS NEEDED!

(PARDON THE ALL-CAPS. I AM AT WORK AND MY SYSTEM IS RATHER FUSSY. I FORGETTED TO SWITCH UNTIL I WAS HALFWAY THROUGH THIS.)

HOW ELSE ARE RENNIES DIFFERENT?

Well, not trying to sound superior, but rennies are generally better educated, and more knowledgable about most things.

we are accepting of others for who they, I have found that ren folk don`t  judge you they just want to talk and get to know you. We are for the most part friendly to each other, and help when  helping when it is needed. I think we have a bond  of friendship not easily broken. ;D

Many of us - those in the SCA, as well as those who are not - never really have to worry about gun control being an issue...we have a broad array of other weapons available, and we know how to use them!  ;D

We've got bigger packages!

Well, we have to, to fit all the clothes and weaponry we pick up at Faires.

More creative in bed. Trust me, a rennie really knows how to roleplay.

Not too many other people would invite people they never met to stay at their house, only "knowing" them through posting on the forum.

Yet we have invited people to stay with us, meeting them for the first time as they pulled up in our driveway.  And we have been on the receiving end of gracious hospitality ourselves, also meeting our hosts/hostesses as we rang the doorbell. And have made great friends.

People we work with and other friends don't get it.  They are incredulous that anyone would let strangers into their homes.

But you can with Rennies because they aren't strangers!  They are different -- and wonderful!

I am constantly amazed by the friendliness of Rennies.  I can be somewhat shy when you first meet me & I'm a bit hypersensitive to bothering people or taking too much of their time.  This was my first year to really talk to people at Faires & I was constantly amazed at how much they wanted to talk to me (& in one case, share alcohol!).
So, yep, Faire folk are very friendly & I am getting use to it.

I believe rennies lean a little more to the left and have a tendancy to be more open minded .

Rennies will hold your hair when you've had too much, and support you when your blood sugar is too low. They'll carry you to the car when you're wasted, and hold your feathers while you dance in the pouring rain. They'll drink all your liquor, but get ya back the next day. And if you're not careful, Rennies will become your best friends, and even FAIREmily when you're not looking...

While  Rennies enjoy such modern toys such as cell phones, ipods, etc., we can imagine living a simple life without them.  Viking horns work quite well in a a small town when you want to get the kid home.  Can he hear me now?

S'truth too.  I discovered last weekend at WIRF that faire isn't the merchants and the shows, it's the people.  I was having a crappy time until I ran into a couple I knew from Bristol and the rest of the day was absolutely wonderful.  Instead of heading out around 1, I ended up staying until 7:30 and hanging out with Moonie.  That's the thing about rennies, no matter where you are, you can almost always run into someone you know, or who knows someone you know, and it's instant family reunion (except these are people you actually like).  ;)

You know rennies are different because when you know you could call anyone whose apart of your ren-mily at two in the morning because something is seriously wrong- they won't ask why you need them, they're already throwing on a pair of shoes and grabbing their keys, saying- "I'll be there in a couple hours."

You guys don't even know how much you all mean to me. Ok, I'm getting all teary just thinking about it. I never enjoyed faire as much as when I started meeting my future FAIREmily. These are people that come to my house in the middle of the night to keep me company when I'm upset. They celebrate with me when my kids have a birthday. They drive cross-country with me so that we can go be with friends that we've never even met. They hold me up and strengthen my spirit when I feel as if I have no more to give. I owe what I have now in my life to my fellow Rennies. Thank you all so much.

And Elle, it would take me a little longer, but you always know that your sister has your back, at any hour.

Dayna,
Glad you didn't leave early and stayed.  It was good to see you and Nixie this Saturday.
(Poor little thing, it was so cold when the wind kicked up)

I love rennies because we are all so different, but can all get a long.  Perhaps we need a Rennie to run for President?

YES! A rennie for President! Now that would work..and they could have their official meetings and greetings at a renfaire! how awesome would that be.

In all the time I have been going to faire, whichever one, with all the drinking going on and the many different types of people attending, I have yet to see one disturbance! or argument, or fight...

Rennies are different b/c we are all gwons upsies and still like to play dress up!

B/c we think we think about our faire persona as our true selves. LF

When you step into a fantasy, it does have a tendancy to release the inhibitions, and people do seem to be more themselves. Of course, everyone else is a part of your fantasy, too, so it works. I can't think of a better way to get to know people.

Lords and Ladies I am your Jester, Theodore Hief.  Today we are here at the "Troll & Ogre Slop Trench", a "fine" feasting establishment in Outer Laconshire, England.

Theodore Hief:  Greetings, doth thou taste anything different with thine meal?

Mukalog:  MMMM YUMMMY

Theodore Hief:  What would thou sayeth if told that thine "Mundane Meat" was switched with our specially prepared "Rennie Roast"!?!?

Mukalog:  MMMM, RENNIE ROAST TASTETH YUMMY.  RENNIE ROAST BETTER THAN MUNDANE MEAT

Groth:  RENNIE ROAST TASTY

Oooglor:  RENNIE ROAST BEST,  BUT YOU LOOK GOOD TOO...MMM

...we believe in magic. And not just the fairy dust and pixie wings type. The real magic. The kind that restores hope and energy. The kind that suspends all forms of reality and makes people believe again.
The kind that forms a bond between us all and allows us to simply be.

At the risk of sounding elitist (hey, we can brag and boast, right?) as a group...

I believe Rennies are better because they understand concepts and embrace values that most mundanes have no comprehension of.  Honour, valour, respect, dignity, grace and romance... indeed, chivalry... are all alive and kicking in the hearts of Rennies everywhere.

Sure, like in every group, there are bad apples within our ranks, but they are typically easily spotted for they have a hard time fitting in.  It's hard for one who has no respect to fake it and we are a community built on respect.  True, we don't judge... but we do have expectations of one another... and of ourselves.  We hold ourselves to higher standards and treat one another with greater deference.

The best I've heard it said is "there's probably more chivalry at one renaissance faire than there was in the entire renaissance"
well... rennies are the reason for that

... but they are typically easily spotted for they have a hard time fitting in.

Isn't that one of the definitions of a proto-rennie?  The wonderful thing about rennies is that none of us fit in, and yet somehow, that makes us all fit in.  So if you can't fit in Here, you're Really S O L

I was dropped off a second floor porch when I was 2 does that count?

As a kid I was always making and shooting longbow.  Mostly out of bailing stringe and scarp wood around the barn.  Great to still be about to carry a bow around.

One thing that I've noticed that's seriously lacking in this list is mention of the skills of the Rennie. We are, at the heart of things, survivalists. In the event of a zombie we could all move to the mountains, set up our own primitive village, and survive just fine. How many mundanes can claim to have any of the skills needed to survive without a grocery store or fire arm? And then, how many mundanes could actually emotionally survive the loss of their technology?

I think rennies are different because we're not afraid to step outside our comfort zone and try something different. There's so much more to the world than most people ever even consider allowing themselves to experience. I know so many folks whose whole life is work, home, tv. Nothing wrong with any of that, but geesh, don't they even wonder what else is there?

Poor deer.... I'd be out hunting the rascally watermelon... and probably not surviving too well.

Rennies are different because they are like instant family. Theres no awkward "first meeting" with rennies.
True! We come with built in ice-breakers.
  Love your garb!
Let me guess what character you are!
Which way to the Pub young man (or lady)?

I have PLENTY of firearms but am just as comfortable with bow, tomahawk, sword & knife.  I actually await the day when technology crashes... I'd love to see an IT geek gut & skin a deer and tan it's hide.  :D
Careful there, Fraser, or one of us IT geeks is going to tan your hide!  ;)

They can TRY... i need a new pair of boots.  If you knew my military record, you might want to stay out of the woods...  There's only one critter more at home in the dark woods and they haven't proved the Wooley Booger is real YET.   ;)

*I know he is.  I don't need proof.*

Hell, you probably bunked with him in basic.

Oh, he's out there... you just have to know where to look.  Wooley Booger, Fouke Monster, Wildman of the Woods, Swamp Ape, Sasquatch... all the same... and real, all the same.  Want to take a trip out to the Big Thicket?

*Rennies are different because they go looking for Bigfoot to drink a beer with him*

Well, with that being the case, he has yet to be properly educated. No one of any taste or breeding can fail to appreciate a fine 15 year "isla!" Meaning distilled on the Isle of Skye or the Isle of Mann, etc. Isla's are a class all their own... Yummy! If I have a dram at 7am, does that indicate a problem?  ???

Creative. Some of the most kindest folks I have ever met. I too will open my doors to a Rennie because that common bond of Faire. True we overlook many things that Mundanes seem to "jump" at. Ex.. I stopped in the local big grocery chain {in Garb] to pick up a fresh cold pineapple to present to Her Majesty at the Va. Faire one day lasy year. The looks I could feel.

It never mattered. I greeted all with a smile.

Rennies don't judge and don't cast stones. Friendly, open, warm, accepting and always cool. Know how to loosen up and not take themsleves too seriously. Know how to kick back and have a good time.

Rennies accept you for who you are, not what they want you to be. I think that is what helps me get through Thanksgiving dinner with my family is knowing that two days later I will be having Thanksgiving dinner with people that I want to be around. As my good lady Ariyana has said to me "there are two types of families, the one you were born with and the one that you make yourself". And that is also why I attend the Castleteers gatherings when the weather is bitterly cold, as the people there more than make up for the weather.

never thought of doing turkey day like that - get through it with family and then have a thanksgiving i really want with friends, etc. not a bad idea, really. wife and i have been thinking of how to deal with the annual drama/hell that is thanksgiving.

and you're right - rennies accept you for whatever you are. i never garb anymore. and i hang out with fellow rennies at the festivals/faires, and have a great time in my jeans and polo. and while watching an act, i have very varied interests - i'll have a cell phone out to check the chiefs score. and although me personally i think it's taboo to have phones out talking on them during acts, texting, and the like. so i feel like im breaking my own rule to keep it set to the game updates and glance at it here and there to see the chiefs score on sundays. no one judges me for that. no one says anything.

i love being around my fellow rennies, it's great.

Rennies accept and celebrate in a very special way than mundanes do....

Except for my absolute best best friend and my Mom, no one else understands the depth of my long distance relationship with another Rennie.  Everyone that Ian and I have shared our relationship with on this board has given us such wonderful support and well wishes.  Being Rennies is what we started our friendship with and, over the years, have discovered so much more that we have in common.  We have such a connection with each other that eing separated by 1500 miles and two countries means little when we can connect by phone and computer and through this board.
