Within 24 hours of the original post of possibly coming up with a new full-color magazine to compete with Renaissance Magazine. . . . I've had no less than 13 folks willing to be "reporters" to various festivals and faires. . . and about $4,000 in advertising promises (using the same scale I use for Pyrates Way advertisers).
With that kind of backing . . . I think the decision is made for me.
Get ready to hear more about Faire Magazine (www.fairemagazine.com) and how much we'll have to offer vendors, entertainers, festival admins/owners, historians, re-enactors. . . playtrons. . .and paytrons.
From Garb Nazis to Ren Faire folk and from Mundanes to Muggles. . . . we hope to offer it all.
Please stand by for support instructions!
Great to hear. I look foward to the magazine.
standing by, ready to purchase. :)
I would LOVE to submit art and or a mag cover. To see samples of my magazine covers...http://www.freewebs.com/the_french_court/magazine1.htm
This sounds like a great idea. And I would love seeing more coverage other festivals other than just the large ones. I attend at least three in the Midwest. We're planning on attending more in the future as new ones are growing up around us),and would be happy to take photos for the magazine.
Put me down for a subscription! If it's anything like The Pyrates Way, it'll be the bomb!
The more publications about Faire or the Renaissance the better...
A suggestion: Perhaps a "reporter" and "photographer" (I put these in quotations, because I don't necessarily mean a professional person who does this as a living) from each state where faires occur. Maybe a couple if it's a big state and/or there are many faires.
They could cover the various faires in the state and write and take photographs. That way, not just the huge venues would be covered, and people could learn about smaller faires that they may not have known about.
I also like the idea of articles on the different performers. It's nice to learn about someone you have seen at the faire, and also to find out about people you haven't seen, and now you would look forward to attending a faire you might not have considered, if that person or group will be there.
I know it would be hard to feature different vendors. There are so many, and you don't want to upset your advertisers. But it would be fun to see the work of vendors that are small mom/pop operations that would never have the money to advertise in a magazine. We recently went to a Renaissance Festival in Dubuque, Iowa. There was the most incredible potter there. She is a mom and started as a hobby several years ago. She does a few craft shows and this was her first faire. Her work is outstandingly beautiful. She could never, ever afford to advertise anywhere. But to feature someone like her, in whatever craft, shows the average person someone who is doing what they love in their lives.
Good luck!
Looks interesting, I'll definitely check it out. Good luck!
looks good to me ;)
As much as I love Pyrate's Way, I've been disappointed in myself for the simple fact I haven't really been able to contribute much of anything at this point. A general faire mag, however, I feel that I would be able to fill countless pages with contributions. Consider me right there at the front of the line, ready to help out with anything and everything that I can throw at you! I have a good start on the year, too... ;D
As I said before, I might be persuaded to be a roving photojournalist/writer for faires that I've either worked or attended.
I think what you have got going is a great thing, Black Fox. Count me in as a subscriber and "lend-a-hand" type if ya need it. Huzzah!! to you for taking on this magazine as well as TPW!
You definately have my respect,
Emerald
I've updated the site with more than just a photo of the cover mock up.
Why should you subscribe now when the first issue is not on the streets till the first of the year?
I'm having 1.5" round pins that have a push-pin back, embossed metal and best of all. . . FREE to the first 500 subscribers. You can see the pin when you click the link from the subscription page.
As for content and other thoughts posted here. . . I'll get back to you. I have to get this groundwork organizational/admin stuff put together before I can get to content, photos, etc. . . but we're definitely going forward with the idea and my distributor for Pyrates Way is VERY interested in the project.
I'll keep you updated as we go. After subscribing, the most important thing folks can do is tell all the potential advertisers about the new magazine and have them contact me for ad rates. . . that page is next to be finished on the site.
Thank you all for making this happen!

Thank you all for making this happen!
Thank you, Black Fox, for taking this challenge upon yourself.
You are a credit to us all.
The Response is CRAZY!
Thus. . .we're moving the magazine publication up from Spring of next year to AUTUMN OF THIS YEAR! Our street date is the first week of October 2008.
I need two ren festival articles of which I'll give the details of what we're looking for in content. However the magazine, like The Pyrates Way, will be very heavy in photography, so we're looking for beautiful photos of the festival itself, participants, interaction, etc. If there's a certain area that makes a certain faire stand out from another, we want info and pics on that. There will be several other articles we'll need which will be spelled out on the pages at www.fairemagazine.com
I really want this magazine to be similar to Pyrates Way in one other way. . . . I want it to be created by "rennies" for "rennies." I'd love to have everyone I can involved!
Okay ... my subscription is in ...
As for Lady Guinness and I, we are here to serve ... if you have a pub section I think I might be able to help you out ... as for all the other faire stuff - talk to Lady Guinness ;D
BTW ... where is my pin?
Just subscribed and can't wait for the first issue. ;D
Photographer....hmm, where would I find one of those? ;D
OK you folks with both writing and photography skills. . . . I need two Renaissance Faire/Festival reviews for the first issue. I'd like to highlight one large faire and one smaller. If you already have the images and writing finished as the faire in question just finished or will prior to the first of August. . . then please let me know immediately.
As for the rest of the magazine, we've gotten a handle on articles that will be ongoing in every issue and the features for the first issue. The "this issue" page has been updated and more information on each article can be found in the "article index" section.
Let me know what you think at first glance!
If it helps, there is a huge group of us invading GLMF this weekend ... I am sure we can put some stuff together for you should you need it. Just let me know. I will also have my camera with me - as will the other 56 R/F.com folks.

PERFECT! Greg, I'll email you with the particulars of what I'm looking for.. . .
CoRF is going on right now. I'll be there with my good camera closing weekend and have been there twice already. I'd be interested
I only have one question for ya Black Fox. With this new venture in addition to TPW, when on earth are you going to be able to make time for faire fun? We'd better still see lots of you! Then again, if you're doing something you love, then I guess it isn't so much like work.

Excellent Well! Keep checking the website for more information on the "contribute" page. It'll contain the laundry list of what information we want to share from the faire (oh cool, a rhyme). . .and photo ideas.
Thank you SO much!

Unlike TPW, where I run around taking the photographs and writing about 80% of the magazine. . . with FM I hope to just kinda' manage and layout the rag. . depending on the talents of rennies who'd just like to see their work in print and their faire on the front page!
I'll always make time for faire. . .and now it's a write-off!
It's going to take a bit of cash up front to get this whole thing in the works, so all of ye traders and sellers of renaissance wares. . . buy an ad or 3!!
Seriously, anyone who knows of a crafter who would benefit from a full color ad, please send them my way. The sooner we get the advertisers in place the sooner the magazine gets out there. If we can get the advertisers in place by the end of July, we can edit the magazine and get it to press by mid-August which means a September delivery on the magazines instead of October!
I'll sweeten the deal even further. Get someone to advertise with Faire Magazine and make sure they mention you by your R/F moniker and when the advertiser pays the bill. . .I'll give you 10% via Paypal!
You're all working for me now! LOL. . . let's make this magazine the hottest thing in the Renaissance community! . . .after all it is all about YOU!
Count me in -I used paypal, this is so exciting. Can't wait for the first copy. :D
The CONTRIBUTE page is up with all the information of what we're looking for, especially in faire/festival reviews, in both text and photo formats. The magazine is wide open for this material at present. . .so get it in to me as soon as possible!
oh, and keep nagging potential advertisers!
Great . I've read the contribute page. Now I need to find a faire.

Sir:
I have forwarded your post to the director of the Gulf Coast Renn faire. This faire is held twice a year. In the spring in Pensacola and in the fall in Mobile. He will have whatever photos you would need. He can be reached at Gcrenfaire@aol.com
Just put in for my subscription, can't wait to see it!

I hope it meets all your expectations and more!
Faire Magazine. . .written for YOU!!
Right here on RenaissanceFestival.com, there's been some flack going around that Renaissance Magazine isn't what it used to be. . . . especially when one out of every six issues is designated for weddings.
So I got that itchy artsy/publishing feeling again. Then a few R/F folks pushed me. Then a few more, who enjoy what I've done in the pirate community with The Pyrates Way magazine and would enjoy a similar magazine for "Rennies."
Hmmmmmmmmm I wondered if a full color magazine with amazing features about different faires including prices, types of food and drink, and detailed info on where to stay in the area, what to expect, etc. . . be a good idea? What if it included a part just for serious re-enactors. . . and a vendor's area. . .and a garb-making area. . . and a feature on some interesting faire artists that you might not know about? If it all came in a nice package every quarter for less than $6 an issue. . .would you people be interested?
So now there's a choice for your magazine dollar. You can chose a black-and-white magazine produced on conventional paper and includes a lot of articles which boost their advertisers but leave readers wanting more faire-oriented material (which was the magazine's original promise). . . or would you rather have a thick magazine of grand photography that brings far-away festivals into your home to share with kin and counsel?
Personally, I think there's room for both. This idea might piss off both my CPA and my wife, who counts on me to at least bring <i>something</i> home in funds for this idea. . . . but 'tis true. I'll subscribe to both magazines, so I can get all the information. That's the truth of it. . . I can provide a lot in our magazine and they can provide other material.
So here's the deal. . . check us out at: www.Faire Magazine.com and see if you like the idea. It's a magazine about Renaissance Faires. . .not just the Renaissance. It's a way to give those involved in Renaissance Festivals, whether owner, entertainer, actor, vendor, playtron or paytron. . . a voice. Our goal is to share these festivals and faires with those who might never (*insert cost of gas here) get the chance to visit.
Subscribers are important but Advertisers pay the bills. If you have a business that's been less-than-profitable this season due to the down-attendance/gas/travel costs. . then this is a way to reach those that would love to see what you have to offer.
C'mon and join us. . . it's all about faire . . . so it's all about us.
(xposted everywhere)
The elements of the first issue have been morphing, changing and added to . . . but if you've not subscribed yet, now's your chance to join the "First 500" club!
www.fairemagazine.com
Just submitted my subscription. Looking forward to the first issue.
I just sent payment for a subscription to this new Magazine. I also subscribe to RENAISSANCE as well.
There are quite a few of us Period Costumers who garb for ourselves and others here on the forums who would be happy to help with articles on Garbing, Fabrics, etc., perhaps be advertisers, and so on. Maybe even have a Photo section for Faire Photos sent in by subscribers.
Now 2 magazines devoted to Faire and the era. Huzzah!!!
Looks great! Just put in my subscription too.
Oh do I have some new surprises for the very first issue . . . some of RenFaire history! Also, as of last night, we're halfway to the First 500 Subscribers mark, and with it, the free "First 500" pin (which is at the manufacturer).

Sir Black Fox:
Since your first issue has been completed There would be no way to get this in, but did you contact the owner of Gulf Coast Faires or did he contact you about using one of the Gulf Coast Faires in your magazine. I hit it from both ends in the hope that the two of you would connect. Also just submitted my subscription. Lastly if Steve(Gulf Coast owner) does not contact you, I have a photo that might be of interest to you, but I need to know a couple of things. the photo was taken at my request by a patron at the Pensacola faire back in March. He sent it to my email address as a Jpeg. If I send it to you, do you and/or I need to get his permission to print it.
