Title: So, when's everyone going?
Post by: maelstrom0370 on July 01, 2008, 09:49:58 AM
I know Layfair's great with her 'gatherings' and whatnot, but I was just curious as to when people plan on going?
We'll definitely be there Opening Weekend, doing the whole Faire experience (day at the Faire, Kings Feast, Dragon Smoker) and camping at Holly Rec.  I'm not sure I can call it camping though, we're borrowing my parents 35' monstrosity of a motorhome for the weekend. (I know, I know, I know...gas prices being what they are and all...but what the hell!  It's fun the splurge once in awhile)
Aside from that, it's a crapshoot.  We try and make at least one other weekend throughout the season, but I work for a resort and summer isn't the best time for me to get time off.  People having the NERVE to get married during MY Faire season!!
So, that's us....what about you?

I should be there ever Saturday - usually in the morning.  One or two Sundays as well.

The 21st is an invasion of friends, do definately then.

I'll be there whenever I can sneak away.  ;D

No definite schedule like 'every saturday' or anything, but I plan to be there for at least a little while most days.

I'm most likely a shoe in for Opening Day -- barring floods or fire (or lots of black smoke and a visit from the fire department) or other natural disasters, that is.

I'll be there opening weekend, scottish weekend and closing weekend for certain.  I plan to camp those weekends so I'll be there both days.  The rest of the season will be hit or miss.  Just depends on money, and kids activities.  I am pretty sure I will not be there Labor Day weekend.  Right now that looks like the only and last time I'll be able to see my husband before he leaves for Iraq.  Soo I'll be in TX.  Darn it why couldn't there be a faire down there that weekend.  hehehe

Yeah for Faire Season!!!!

The Duke of Cardiff and I are planning to be there for Opening Day (he's already asked for that day off work, so there shouldn't be any problems...*crosses all crossables*).  We're hoping to go a few more times as well, but the "whens" will be up to his work schedule.

We'll be there every weekend, Labor Day is the most important, many of our fellow Outlanders will be attending then.

If the 16th of August is the Saturday of that weekend, then that's it for me.  Working for a living stinks.

Trying to get together another trip the 19th to the 21st of September.

Sir Gawain and myself will be making our annual pilgrimage to Hollygrove again this labour day w/e just booked the hotel  <waving to all wenches and miscreants about!!!>  can't wait to see you all again :-*

Flidais give that hubby a big hug from us...we'll miss seeing you both this year remember you can come up and visit sometime with Lady Ann. Ivor will be in our prayers and thoughts as ever.

looking forward to the usual raucous antics with the wenches (goes without saying)

Ladyfair and LadyAnn , Sealion and hey Margaret will look for you and Katie Bookwench you and your sister keep yer knickers on (nudge, nudge, wink wink)   ;)hope to see you all

Quiet one see you there!!

but one question...was looking at the website and i don't see ERnesto on the bill????  is djhilia phrelengo performing this year.....Lady ann your usually in the know any word ....that is my favourite place in all the world at the Dragon's breath pub sipping a smithwicks and swaying to the music...i'll be one disappointed wench if he's not there <le sigh>

counting the days.....

It's a good thing Mary Jane can do two things at once, or she'd never have gotten so much sewing done this off season-- she's got several new pieces (ahem) to wear out this year. I don't think any of them are knickers though. Hers never seem to wear out.

Prolly cause she never wears them at all. (nudge, wink, snort)

But enough about Mary Jane's knickers....please. (says Katie, holding her spork aloft)

We're VERY excited to welcome you and Sir Gawain back to Hollygrove.

and I for one am also VERY dissapointed that Ivor will miss all the fun-- Flidias, give him a smooch on the noggin and my best wishes as you pack him off on his way-- and remind him there are a LOT of wenches (besides his gorgeous wife) who want him to keep his lovely bum out of harms way. We'd all like to see it in one piece when he gets back. (um.... well, you know what I mean.  ;D )

Yes... mayhem is afoot for this year. THAT, I think does indeed go without saying. I think we're gonna have a good time now and again.

Every weekend, I'm cast. There will be other flower sellers, but if you ask someone where the singing flower seller is, you should be directed to me. I will also be outside the opening gate, doing my thing.

Cassandra and Katie thank you both for your well wishes to Ivor.  That rail in the Guinness sure is going to look lonely this year.  But he should be back for next season and we'll just have to make up for him being gone this one.  wooohooooo!!!

I'm bummed I will be missing you and Gawain this Labor Day, Cassandra.  As well as all the other RF-ers that visit our shire that weekend.  But it will be sooooo good to see Ivor again.

I spoke with Ernesto last week and he said that as far as he knew he would be playing at MIRF this year and that he was told it was an oversight that he was left off the website.  Hopefully all will be well and him and Liz will be there again this year, that was a favorite spot of mine as well.

Are we there yet???

Let's see... I WANT to get there Labour Day weekend, but seeing as that's the first weekend back at school... probably not, so I'm looking at Opening day now or that Sunday.  Definately a weekend in September when I kidnap my flatmates and we invade MiRF.  Apparently they go every year and I didn't see them!  Sneaky buggers...lol...

My lovely wife and I will be there at least 1 day of each weekend.  You can usually spot me in my attire above, or my Green/Purple Pirate outfit.  I also have a blue Noble's robe I wear with a Green shirt and black tights with lace up boots (for you calf loving ladies out there).  I'm also looking into a Kilt outfit, as I have been told I have the legs for it!  We usually hang out at the Guiness Pub, so come join us for a pint!  You can never have too many rennie friends, HUZZAH!

Athena you'll love MiRF. It is alot of fun. I used to live in Michigan and went to it when it was still fairly new and then again two years ago. It has really grown since the early days.
Now I live in Iowa and my fiance and I are coming back for the Sept. 6th & 7th weekend. Next year will be for our wedding there.

I'll probably attend all days of the labor day weekend and maybe the first weekend. For the most part it seems I'll be dressed in pirate garb this year since Pirate Theme Weeken falls on this year's Labor Day Weekend. I don't know really it depends on the tempuratures for those days any more I just can't handle the heat like I used to.

Our graceous and beautiful Queen loves a man in tights and in kilts and... and... oh wait... doesn't she love ALL MEN???  *lol*

Oh Your Magesty, I do have a message for you from a very sweet little lady that you made an honorary member of your court last year.  A beautiful young blonde from the Frankenmuth area. She sends you hugs and well wishes and said that she is hoping to be apart of your court again this year.  She was made a member of the MMRF court and told the partners that she hopes to be as "regal" as you are.  After hearing that, they hired her on the spot.  *LOL*  They also hired a young man that had pictures of himself dancing with you!!!  It seemed that everyone was using the Queen as a reference.  *LOL*  But Jennifer asked me to give you a special hello from her and she is looking forward to seeing you this year!!

Tell me about it, Margaret. I'm in a sewing storm and have been for weeks. I have two dresses, but I've decided I need three and to make my blackwork look reasonable, so I can sit and blackwork and chat, once my roses are sold and I intend to sell all the ones marked for me, out. I'm a rose pusher. Snort.

I'm not allowed in, near, or by th Guiness Pub, till after the faire closes for the day, so all the pub folks, please come find me. I'm the only rose seller on cast and I sing in Italian and speak with an accent. I'm not really missable. Even on a busy day. Arrive at the beginning and look for the worst dancer in the cast. That's me.

I have several hats, a dress that is cut, but not sewn, some blackwork on a camicia and I'm playing with a farthingale made with tubing, cause it sounded like fun!! I'm almost done now.

Two dresses, five camicia's (I spill), three pillbox hats and one kids garb done. Two more kids and sleeves for the hubby and I'm golden. Then there are the Italian lessons, the singing work and the bits to put together. DEAR GOD GIVE ME A KID-FREE WEEK!!!!!

Four of em and they've all decided there are too many, "bitey bugs" to play outside.

I'm definitely going Opening Day for the archery competition with my friend Elizabeth, the one who first took me to faire, bless her. After that, I have to go at least twice more because I promised my friend Kelly that I would convert her, and I need to expose my cousin in hopes that it will do her some good. (Renaissance Therapy---it cleanses the soul). My goal for this year is to meet as many people as possible because I didn't really have the chance to socialize before, and to buy a tankard! Does anybody know how much one of those might cost me??

There are wooden ones, metal ones and leather mugs or tankards ranging anywhere from $30 on up, a nice one around $55. Look around first then choose what meets your fancy and budget.

Thanks for the approximation. Due to religious concerns I can't buy a leather one, and metal just looks cooler than wood, so I'm going to end up on the upper part of the price range. Oh well, it's worth it. (And yet I wouldn't spend that much on a pair of shoes...gotta love faire-logic!)

I have a metal tankard, and it sucks all the cold out of your beverage in nothing flat.  I would suggest a wood one, due to the above fact and that they are lighter and easier to carry when not in use.

It also will take on heat from hot beverages, making a chalice or a cup very hard to handle without hotpads. (ooch!)   :-[

I have a large metal (that pewter-like stuff I can't recall the name of at the moment) mug that - thank goodness- has a handle, or hot coffee in the morning would be an impossibility.

I spoke with Ernesto last week and he said that as far as he knew he would be playing at MIRF this year and that he was told it was an oversight that he was left off the website.  Hopefully all will be well and him and Liz will be there again this year, that was a favorite spot of mine as well.

I even got word from Liz that Johnny Red, former Guitarist of the Gutterpups, will be playing with Ernesto and Liz.

Merry Measure is returning for all but the final weekend.  This will be my second year at MIRF and I'm looking forward to having even more fun than I had last year, when I got my first ever wenching! ;D

Not sure when as of yet, but my lovely Lady Kathryn will be with us for at least one weekend as well.

That pewter-like stuff you speak of Katie is called Armitale or Statesmetal. I have a tankard made of the stuff and it holds nearly 3 cans or bottles of beer, I say nearly because you can only get half of the 3rd beer in the tankard. I found I like metal because it doesn't break easily, but wood is good too. I found though yes, the metal can take cold from the drink, it also can retain the cold in your drink, once chilled down long enough with ice or a lager beer like Budweiser or Miller. Then fill will choice beers or ales even soda as the day wears on.

This info is for Saoirse_Anam:

Reincarnated Trees has some very nice wood mugs. I bought a wine goblet, and shot cup from his  shop last year, and I'm very happy with them.

There are two other wooden mug/cup, and bowl shops  sort of located from the southwest corner of the castle and jail.

Most of the shops that sell metal cups are of the higher end pewter and most with very intricate designs, but if you have the cash you might as well splurge and get yourself a real nice, one I would but a fancy goblet or mug just wouldn't go well with my garb.

Visit the Michrenfest site and they should have a listing of all their merchants and I'm sure your friend Elizabeth will be able to point you in the right direction. Hope some of these suggestions help in your quest to find the cup. Hee Hee

Looks like I'll only be able to make one day this year.  Time's just running out and I'll have to be at school during Labour Day (they don't give us that day off!  How dare they?  Do they not know that MiRF is going on?  lol), but I WILL  be there sometime in Sept.  With a few of me friends in tow.

Indeed, Madge Estes is there, safe and sound as Promised.  Yes, an 18 hour drive is quite an endeavour, but Madge Estes is, at the VERY least, worth Every second and Every Inch of that journey.  Music, Caffeine, and conversation (as well as a modicum of adventure) helped along the way.

Things I learned:

1. Not all SUV's are created equal.
2. Flexibility is key in any trip. ;)
3. The Northbound signs over the Ohio River were not exactly designed for tall people.
4. Fog Alert lights being off does not mean one shold not be on the alert for fog.
5. The smoky mountains really Are.
6. The Window Defogger does not defog the Outside of the windshield.  The Windshield wipers do.
7. Fog in Kentucky has the same blinding effect as Rain in Florida and Snow in Central New York.
8. After an 18 hour drive, any place can be comfortable enough to sleep.
9. Tighten down the Oil Cap before leaving, just to make sure. ;)

I'll see you all on Final Weekend unless matters prompt my return sooner.

Stay right except to pass until you get to the MI border. Then, all bets are off.

Huzzah! Welcome back to the shire your highness. Sounds like you had quite a voyage. Take a well deserved break till next week if possible.

As an aside comment to evryone on here about our queen, she is most regal. But, she is also very human and kind, I seen her last year down one of the lanes with some children talking with her and I happened to be walking by on my way to the next show of the Washing Well Wenches. Being dressed in all black garb the kids quieted and gave me a mean look. And warned the queen that I was coming to get her. Which at that moment she turned and I shook my head no, but looking at her I was struck with a lump in my throat and I doffed my hat and bowed saying good day my Queen. Then I looked up with a smile and nod, and Madge said good day and asked how I was enjoying my day and I told her I was having a good time and I must be off. Then the children had  giggled and she explained I was just another rogue having a good time and I wouldn't hurt her or them. Cause some of them kids looked quite frightened. I think this happened a few years ago, but I still remember it because even though,  we know her as Queen Elizabeth the most powerful woman in Renaissance Europe whom with a word could have you beheaded or tortured for anythin she sees unfit. She is still a wonderful kind human being. And a great performer.

It absolutely shows that you love your job Madge Estes.  There is no queen at any faire that compares to you!!!  You have a grace and presence that could only be rivaled by true royalty.  At the feast on 2 occasions, you have shown favor to my calves as we men bow in your presence (much to the shagrin of my wife) and I was infinitely flattered both times.  We love you like family at MiRF!

You will not find a most caring, down to earth, loving, sincere, honest, honorable, (and the word that DW uses to describe Her Majesty the most) REAL Queen ANYWHERE!!!!  She has a regal ora about her wether she is in or out of character.  She is a most formidable and magnanimous lady.  I will never ever forget the first time that I met her.  My knees were knocking!!!!!   If all the Queens that I have had the privledge of meeting, she tops them all!!!!!

I'm too busy making up poems about men and their need for codpieces the size of London to notice His Grace's calves. I get as far as that impossibly ginormous ego boost and it's too funny. When The Lord Mayor made a speech to Fairfax, playing the queen, calling him a most beautious rose, I think I had water shoot out my nose. Hysterical.

I hope as a member of the actual company that runs the faire he is not in here. I really don't want to get, "that look" from him on Saturday. I'm nervous enough, but thinking of him in one of the queen's dresses, OMG too funny!! Especially with all that hair. We could put it up with bows and pearls. I really do need to stop this. Well you musn't forget the frilly knickers, sorry bloomers, the make up and jewellery. He's got to look the part. :D

OMG! (snort) FRILLY KNICKERS! The thought of Fairfax in Frilly Knickers makes me laugh!

Actually, the man in the Widow Gown wasn't Fairfax, it was Tailman. Just to keep the record straight. Tailman is a bit taller, and his hair is curly -- and he wears leather...and a tail. Hence, the moniker 'Tailman.'

As a Peer of the Realm, our Dear Alexander wouldn't be caught doing such things during faire. But what he does in the Privacy of his own Estates.... that's another matter.  :D

I have way more money than I care to admit into my 4 costumes, and I'm thinking of adding a Kilt ensemble to the list.

So, I will be attending the Saturday of Labor Day weekend with my, wife, our daughter, our friend, and her son, ungarbed. I plan on going garbed with just myself and a friend of mine on a day yet to be planned.

Well, we all have spent more then we intended, but like any hobbie some things are just a little more expensive then others.

BTW ~  You and the Mrs. look marvelous!

Festive greetings, all.

I don't know anybody, but if you see me (tall, thin guy, white cap, red shirt, little backpack, maybe a couple of cameras), please say hi. I will probably reply in a civilized manner.

I'll be there today after 3:30 pm (working this morning), look for a guy with a shaved head in black tights, a green shirt and blue Nobles robe at the Guiness Pub.  If I see you, I'll be sure to make your acquaintance!

LadyAnn.....Thanks for the compliment, I cannot wait until the 24th to see that beautiful smile of yours in person once again.  Barb was disappointed to find out that you wouldn't be there opening weekend!

31 days and counting down.  As much as I would like it to be sooner, such would also cause a shorter faire.

Till then, I remain yours ever,

Captain Morgan Dunne

This Sunday, August 24th will be the first trip to Hollygrove for me this year.  Will be there with camera in hand.  I'll be garbed as I am in the avatar, though with a bow in hand instead of the staff and quiver of arrows across my back.  (Should be a challenge lugging a camera around this year with the bow and quiver.)

Agreement with all regarding the Queen.  She is a beautiful and elegant lady, so full of talent, wit and charm.  I would love to say something reasonably intelligent to her if permitted, by can't seem to even manage to get out "Your Grace" properly when she is around. Tossed her up a rose at the end of last year's festival and I should of been arrested by Her royal guards for such a clumsy and awkward display.

Looking forward to another outstanding year admiring all you fine Ladies & Lords who are full of so much talent and show!

(Photos from last year and some previous years. This year's will be coming after Sunday.)

I was blessed and lucky to meet several wonderful folk from the list, always when I was running off to be somewhere. Which meant no meaningful conversation, but I sure did enjoy meeting some of you. I'm easier to catch between ten forty five and noon. At noon I can be found between the beer and wine dealers to the right as you enter the festival, or strolling around the front gate showing couples how to hold hands and such. Please seek me out. I love meeting people.

Max and Kate, I will really try, but I keep getting caught up in being me and teaching couples how to hold hands properly and making references to how shocked I am by all the ankles I see. Snort. I am having so much fun. This is like a dream.

I will be there this Saturday the 13th. I will make the meet and greet for sure this time.
I'll be there alone, for the morning at least. I promised a friend I'd volunteer for her and her animal rescue group that will be there but she won't be there until 2pm and my other half will be working so he can't come.
I'm looking very forward to meeting some of you!  ;D
