Title: Teen Rennies
Post by: Saoirse_Anam on July 21, 2008, 12:58:37 PM
I think we deserve our own thread! When you think about meeting people at faire, you go to the Guiness. It's not so easy for those of us under 21, so we have to come up with new ways to meet. So, tell us about you and your faire in a post!

Emily, how kind of you to put my thoughts into action. We make an amazing team. I'm not sure if MiRF is ready for us this year. We are not as tame as we used to be. Bodice shops, jewerly men, making wild escapes out side doors.... good times.

Allright I suppose this applies to me. I'm Cailey and I'm currently working for my second season at CoRF and adore every second. I auditioned when I was 15 and got on cast at 16 working as a magicians assistant in the Arsene of Paris show! Good grief I've gotten so sucked into the whole thing that now I'm only 17 (that's right not even legal!) and I feel more at home at the faire than i do most places! Plus I have met so many awesome friends through faire, so what if tey are all at least 6 years older than me! I love my "job" which consists of 4 shows a day with Arsene and another assistant in which I do such magical things as get cut up in a box, the parade in which i spot fot a firebreather, a tiny bit of front gate in the morning, and hanging out with/helping my super cool friends. I'm so thankfull that I got the spot with arsene because if not I'd probably be working at the front gate or a food place... YUCK! But i get the feeling that I'll be around faires quite a bit in my life but I don't mind because hey... it's fun!

That is awesome. I thought about working there but between marching band and other events I just don't have the time. This being my senior year and all I have a lot of work to do for college and future career stuff. Nothing compares to going to faires though. If I could do that for a living then I would be the happiest person alive. No joke. Nothing is more fun then wenching yourself up and causing mischief up and down the lanes of Hollygrove. What makes it better is knowing the jailor. Saoirse and I had my brother taken to jail for being a bad man servant and he had to sing to us while impersonating Elvis. It was a blast. Such fond memories are made at the faire I don't know how people survive without going.

all of my faires are very far away to be able to work there :(
But I do agree it is very difficult to meet friends without hanging around the pubs... which I especially can't because I'm nearly always with my bf and he's quite allergic to ciggarette smoke... :( so I almost never see anyone I know for some reason :( :( :*(

So instead I play with little kids when I'm in my fairy stuff.. :)

I'm sort of a teen, though only for another month. HUZZAH for turning 20. But then again, I'll still be under 21.

*sigh*

My home faire is 2.5 hours away from me. I actually know there are 2 that are closer, but I've not had the chance to visit those yet. And it is my home faire only because it's the only one I've been too. I went once. Last year. That was my first faire. AMAZING. Loved every moment and my friends and I are already planning the coming trip.

My only real regret is having not gone to faire before last year. *sigh* Oh well! I've got plenty of faires to come! HUZZAH

Its nice to see some kids around my age finally...been waiting for ya'll to show up! :D

Well...I can feel you on all my friends being 6 years older if not more at faire, Kathleen. Until about four months ago, the closest friend I had at faire was almost ten years older than I. My best friend out at faire though is two years older than I am but I dunno, I love having friends of ranging ages and especially being the baby of my Clan. Always makes for a good time and plenty of big brothers and faire uncles to protect me all the time!

Underage people are allowed to be around the pubs at Scarby so it's never affected me much but in a couple months, at TRF, I know I won't be able to go inside the Prince of Wales, but meh. It's alright, the people that I want to see or want to see me will come and hang out with me. :D I think you meet plenty of people without even going to the pubs...

Background on me, eh...I've been going to faire for a bout a year now, Scarby was my first in May of 07'. Instantly hooked, went to Colorado RF in Larkspur once last summer, then made a trip down to Plantersville for TRF once last fall. Did the full run of Scarby this past year and have plans in the making to hit Middlefaire and a small fantasy faire called Serendipity before TRF starts up in October. In the Spring, I'll be working for a booth at Scarborough so it's really fun and exciting! :D

That's actually something I don't worry about. A whole bunch of my friends at school love faire and we go together. Some of my friends work at the faire and we call em up to tell them, hey this is when we're coming and then they spend the day picking on us in character. It's fun

You were lucky to find friends from school that would go to faire with you. I went to faire by myself with my best friend before I was dressing in garb once, but then after that, I went to faire by myself.  I found the forum though and the rest if history. ^_^;

I felt so loved and i still do! horay for ren fest friends!

Yeah, I was like, "I'm not coming alone, come with me." And they went "To faire? SURE!" It was great and some of my newer friends I found out work at faire and I'm just so amused by it all. HUZZAH.

And Kathleen, a 30 year old hitting on you? Creepy...

While I myself am WELL beyond being a "Teen Rennie", I do have 2 of them I call my tax deductions.. I mean my demons.. I mean my children.

My daughter, is only 12, but she looks as if she were 18.  I have recently told her that her new Faire name is going to be "Felony", that way when the creepy 30 year old comes up and asks "What's your name", she can honestly tell him "Felony".  As it stands right now, if you ask her "What's the answer of the day"?  She will respond with "I'm 12".

Oh, but you see, the funniest part will be HOW she says "Felony".  She has a sweet sing-song voice she uses when she wants to get her way.  I am going to tell her that she needs to use that voice when saying it and kind of draw it out.. sort of like "FELLLLOOOONNNNEEEE"  if you can imagine that ;)

BRILLIANT!  I have a feeling our daughter (now eight) will be a lot like that in a few years  :o

Although I'm about 18 years past being a teen, I still feel like one every once in a while.  To quote Bryan Adams, "Those were the best days of our lives!"

I'm 19. Someone told me I looked 12. >.< I do have a round face, like my dad. It kinda sucks right now, I want to look at least my age.

I have been interested in ren faires for a while. Only just recently have I actually gotten the opportunity to go to one. The first was a pirate ren faire with my friend. Second was while we were on vacation, Central Coast Ren Faire. I think I liked the one where I was wandering around alone better than the one with my friend.

I have a problem with shyness (bleargh), and i think if I am with another person, I kind of put on blinders. If I am alone, I look around more, and not just pay attention to what the person with me is doing.

I wish there were more faires in my area. There is one in SF, but I would have to take BART, then Muni, and there is no way I would go NOT in costume, so I would be doing that in skirts/bodice/blouse. It's a bit too much.

I prefer smaller crowds while I'm with friends that way we all get some attention instead of just a few of us and I'm shy to so wandering alone is a tab bit intimidating to me. Even though I am only 17 I do get the "I thought you were older!" line all the time from people. Sometimes it's flattering, other times its creepy but I'm not the type of girl who lets people believe I'm older than I actually am. I'm young and proud of it too! Huzzah!

Well My name is Hannah and my home fair is Minnesota. I'm 17 (but not for long!) I turn 18 at the fair this year and am excited to celebrate my adult-hood with buying a dagger or something of that nature. I enjoy sharing my nerd-ness with friends and have actually convinced them all to come with me this year.

I am a huge garber and have managed to garb my whole family along with a few friends. I hope to work at the fair in college so who knows what fair adventures are coming up. See you all at fair.

I looked much older until I got my braces...and now, it's like- oh, wow, there's the twelve year old.
*glares*
I'm 18! :P

I get the whole, "I thought you were older..." too Lady Elizabeth and hahaha, yeah, it depends on who I get it from.

Yeah I'll be 18 in December. I miss out on so many things by having a late birthday. I can't vote this year, I have to wait a whole entire year to buy a new sword on my own and there are no faires at the time of my birthday. Oh the torture. I'll survive though as long as I have holly grove to keep me occupied for the next 2 months.

OMG this site is amazing i had NO idea that such a wonderful place existed.  :D I am native to Hollygrove and extremely excited to have discovered others from my faire. Its a wonder how we have never run into each other. Ive been going since i was wee child, although i suppose i stick out since i dont have a garb and it would appear Lady Elizabeth has a full set. For the record i am exremely jealous.

You guys are totally right by the way. Its not fair that we are punished merely because we are underage and denied the social interaction with the other Rennies that we deserve.  I hope to make it out to opening day if possible, i may be detained because i have to help my boyfriend move his things into his apartment. Hes going away to college and im heartbroken, i know by experience that long distance relationships fail.  >:(

Do any of you know where i can find some well made garb??

I know what you mean. I've had my fair share of failures when it comes to long distance relationships. I'm glad to see more people my age who attend MiRF. I am also going opening day. Maybe we'll run into each other. As for garb my first set was a gift and my second set is new this year. I can't wait to wear them both. It's amazing to have options.

Well made garb?
It all depends on how much money you're willing to spend. You will get well made, but for a price. You're bound to find something in your price range/what quality you're looking for.In my opinion, these are some of the best on the market right now for bodices. As always though, I recommend waiting to get a bodice until you can go to your home faire and get properly fitted in person. I bought my first corset online prior to going to faire without a fitting and it was a mistake, because although it was wonderfully made, it did not fit me correctly (too big, which is never good in a bodice) and I had to sell it-

The website is down, the last I checked but should be up soon- www.moresca.com

I recommend www.oddbodkin.com  for garb, they are owned by a good friend of mine, and very high quality manufacturing.  They actually make all the items they sell, (no mass production from someone else and resold thorugh them), and they are rennies themselves.

Just an FYI for you, especially the father. My daughter is 9, and I have a bad feeling she's going to look older than she is in a few years too, so I know where you're coming from. Everyone thinks under 18 is illegal, but in the majority of states that's not the case. Kathleen, in certain circumstances, you were legal at 15 in the state of Colorado.

but thats ones a sliding scale isn't it? under 18 is only legal if the other person isn't over 21?

aside from that, just because your under 18 or 21 is no reason to feel left out of anything at the faire aside of the pub.  I'm still in my early 20's and before hitting 21, I was always hanging out with the adult crowds, yet still young enough for it to not be creepy to hang out with the younger crowd too.

ha! legal at 15.... my dad will love that! even if i am technically legal i still don't want 40 year old drunk men hitting on me! it's ok though because i have found that being the youngest of all the people i work with has made me like a little sister to most, and if any one bothers me there are many people around to put a stop to it! i found that out my first season when this guy who knew i was 16, hit on me for like 5 weekends, blech! luckily after a few words from my friends he never even looked at me again! i feel so loved!!!!!!

ps: sorry for the lack of capitalization... i have henna drying on my left wrist so i'm one handing it! ;D

Well, the age of consent in Texas is 17, however I as a parent can still press charges should I choose to do so.  Fortunately there are plenty of "aunts and uncles" out there at TRF I know she is being watched over by people that will do what needs to be done to protect her.

Oh how lucky getting to work at faire! I'm seventeen also and have only been to faire once which was last spring at AZRF with my good rennie friend Kurt who's been in a guild and not gone since he got married and had his first baby (he now has two chillen's). The only thing keeping me from doing that is that on Saturday my family and I keep the Sabbath (not Jewish, I keep the Holy Days and seventh day Sabbath) from Fri. night to Sat. night and then I couldn't be there every weekend because I have not my own mode of transport. *sigh*
This year I am going to be getting a part-time occupation and will purchase my first bodice and perform my first persona (which will develop, no doubt, throughout the day, mwahaa) of Cordelia the Irish daughter of a pirate! ^_^ I'm pretty enthused and my family humors me, thus I thrive. Mayhap I'll get my little sister a costume and get my brothers to wear some sword-worthy weapon. :-)

Cheers my fellow teenagers! ~ Codi

Oh, my step-sister (it's weird to say that, we've gotten so close) is 13 and the most beautiful thing with a very athletic figure and the gift/curse to have matured very early. (Suffice it to say, I'm glad to be five years older, for I myself was a late bloomer and now I feel like we're on even par.) Anyway, I'll be bringing her to Faire this season at AZRF and I just hope that whatever garb we get her, or if she wears any, will NOT be a bodice like mine or anything of the like; else myself, her two older brothers, and her father will be after the unlucky lad who looks at her. Ha... but really.
