Title: Ren Beer list
Post by: DonaCatalina on August 14, 2008, 08:34:06 AM
I looked for this thread but it must not have been revived yet.

A) What is the beer you prefer at your local Faire?

B) Is there a local beer you'd like to see at your Faire?

Locally it would nice to see "Robert the Bruce" available. It's brewed here in our state at "Three Floyds Brewing Company". Its a dark brown Scottish ale, and a pretty darn good one at that.

As for a beer I prefer anytime, at any event...

Since I actually believe that life is too short to drink terrible beer....I prefer Guinness or Beamish to all others.......I have been known to drink the local stout at faire, but usually have a Guinness availeble someplace close by

So by virtue of the previous statement, I would like to see Guinness or Beamish at faire and if they don't have either of them, they should get them.

MDRF - Beamish (I miss the little green guy {B&T})
GLMF - Smithwicks
CRF - Guinness
Sterling - Smithwicks (tough to find though) & Guinness
PARF - Swashbuckler Gold
NCRF - Whatever they have  ;D
VARF - Beachbum (but there was Smithwicks in the parking lot)
ORF ... never stayed sober enough to remember ...
Pittsburgh ... same
MNRF ... same

I don't believe I have ever drank a beer at Fest.  It is a rare occasion for me to do so.  I tend to stay with the Mead or Hard Cider.

If I were to...Most likely a Guiness.

If I'm not drinking a home brew or a St. Arnold's from the cooler in the back of the carriage, at Scarby it'll be Guinness and at TRF usually Young's Double Chocolate Stout.  There are quite a few interesting beers available at TRF, so if it's not the Young's, I'll be trying something equally exotic.

Bare Knuckle Stout...

I really hate to say it, but I believe that it is better than Guinness...
...Prob because it is quite similar to a "Local" microbrew I am fond of.

At Scarby it is Shiner Bock
But at Trf they have

Chimay

We prefer Guinness but sadly the person who took over our faire changed our brew to a "light" beer. Yuck!

At TFR, I drink..... what don't I drink, ummmmmm let me think.
After my 5th Young's Double chocolate stout, I have a McEwan or two, toped off with an Oat meal stout and for desert I have Peach Limbic. That holds me over till I get back to camp to do some real drinking.

That peach lambic is tasty, isn't it? The framboise isn't bad either. I would like to see Charles offer the Kriek too, though, the tartness would be very refreshing on a hot day.

Oh, how I love the peach limbic, it's like...... drinking a peach soda pop. But at 18 dollars a bottle at TRF, I stop at one. ::)

No kidding. Even at $6 a pop at Spec's or World Market/Cost Plus, I limit myself to an occasional treat!

Ah, my favorite beer... wish it were at faire...

My beloved Stella Artois.

I first made her acquaintance many years ago in Stratford Upon Avon just prior to a lovely outing of punting on the Thames with a brand new friend that soon after became my husband.  It was a very unassuming meeting.  She being the only one of her kind available on a quiet Sunday afternoon at, of all the unlikely places, Pizza Hut.  I did not allow this lowly beginning to put me off her many excellent qualities.  At that precise moment it was her easy availability that caught my eye.  Not wanting her to think me ungrateful to her for being there when I needed her, I continued to find her whenever possible over many, many years.  She became a trusted friend, although often time elusive in the area I lived.  As time passed I was able to find her more often.  It seemed that she has become friendly with many more people.  That's OK.  We had been friends a very long time and I knew she'd never leave me even if I did entertain others along side her.  She was no attention hound and didn't mind the company.

Preparing for the weekend I decided to go to my local Class V store.  It had been awhile since I spent time in her company and I feared she would feel neglected without my attentions.  Being still rather new to this area I worried that she was sitting on the shelf lonely and desperate, throwing herself at any passing hand just for the comfort of a firm grip about her neck.

To my shock and horror she was not in her usual spot with her friends Tilburg, Henry, and Smithwicks.  I called to her, but alas, she did not answer.  Had she grown so weary in waiting?  Had she fallen in with bitter types?  Had she taken up with some sweet thing!?!   Sigh.  There was not even a calling card left on the shelf to show that she had once graced its ledge.  I paused in a moment of silence and wished her well, wherever she had gone.

Down trodden and dismayed, I shuffled westward within the store in hopes of finding a new friend amongst the riffraff of Bud, Mich, and Blue.  There were many familiar faces as well as a few interlopers pushing their way onto the shelves.  I'd seen their type before.  Seasonal.  Hmph.  Vagrants!  Settling in to tease for a short while then pushing off to warmer climes leaving you wanting.  I'd have none of that.  I was saddened at the loss of my friend but I'd not take up with a transient on the rebound!

Halfheartedly scanning the shelves I thought I glimpsed a familiar color scheme down a few rows.  No, it couldn't be Stella.  This is not where she belonged.  I ignored the imposter and kept hunting.   Up and down the shelves I searched, finding not an enticing label in the lot.  Closer and closer I drew to those brilliantly coordinated colors.  Could it be...?

Huzzah and rejoice!  There she was!  My dearest and oldest of malted friends, Stella!  Moved to a new and somewhat less diverse neighborhood than before, but still in decent company.  It seems that in my absence she had befriended the masses; charmed them, as it were, with her delightful tingle and refreshing crispness, and had to be moved to larger accommodations to fulfill the growing desire of her liquid wonderment.  So brazen and popular had she become that she was now flaunting herself around by the dozen!  This was not like my old friend at all.

Part of me dances with tears of joy at her acceptance by so many.  Finally they see what I have always appreciated and enjoyed.   Huzzah again and welcome to the light!

However, another part of me thinks:  You two timing belch.

MG

Originally I posted this in stories but garnered very little reading.  *sigh*  I thought it was funny.

At GLMF it's usually Newcastle or Swithwicks for me.

I wish they served  beer from the Great Lakes Brewing Company, especially the Elliot Ness Lager or the Burning River Pale Ale. It would be great to promote a local brewery! I really like going to a faire and seeing what they have to offer in terms of local brews, really gives me a taste of the region.

It is all a matter of taste.  Some like blondes, some like brunettes.  Personally, it took me three bottles to learn to like Guiness.  And I did it mostly to impress a little brunette, but that is another story.  Learned to like clam chowder the same evening....

The local Faire (http://www.fourkingdoms.com) that I'm headed to next month is sponsored by Blue Cat Brew Pub (http://www.bluecatbrewpub.com/beer98.htm), a local microbrewery, and one of my "home bars".  This is both a good thing and a bad thing. I typically drink their Wigged Pig Wheat (http://www.bluecatbrewpub.com/Wigged%20Pig%20Wheat.htm) or Off the Rail Pale Ale (http://www.bluecatbrewpub.com/Off%20the%20Rail%20Pale_ale.htm), and sometimes the in-season stout or the Big Bad Dog English Ale (http://www.bluecatbrewpub.com/big_bad_dog_old_english_ale.htm). Right now, my favorite is their Tuck's Tenacious Trippel (http://www.bluecatbrewpub.com/Tucks.htm) - clocking in at 9% abv.

GLMF-Smithwicks
ORF-Stella Artois
VARF-Beachbum
MDRF- Sam Adams Octoberfest (Smithwicks in the Lot)
PARF-Skullsplitter

Pittsburgh used to have good beer, Harp, Guinness...until last year when Coors (ack) became a sponsor.  But we will have Harp and Smithwicks in the Parking lot.

I'm game for just about any beer as long as it's not a mass produced domestic and it's NOT IN A CAN!

A few favs are Stella, Guinness, Harps, Boddingtons...to name a few. I go positively weak in the knees for a good Black and Tan though!

Guinness for the "breakfast" drinks....'tis Good for You, is it not?   ;)

Then, at Sterling, it's on to either a Magic Hat # 9, a Smithwick's {my Aunt suggested it, one of her favorites},or a Bass one can be found...and Apricot Wheat for dessert  ;D

At BARF, it's Bass Ale...

...with not a few drinks of Mead {at ANY Faire }along the way, for refreshment   :D

My husband says "Never trust a beer you can see through" - so he loves his Beamish and Guiness.   Me - there is a drink at the MDRF that's called a Beestinger - it's half honey meade and half hard cider.  So good.

The BeeSting is a drink that many of us at MDRF enjoy A Hardcore Cider and a Mead make a wonderful blend.

My personal tastes at our faire tend to stick to cider. I'm a Guiness drinker at heart and although we don't have that we have many alternatives. We only have 6 or 8 beers on tap but one pub has several malt liquor alternatives and two pubs have dozens of bottled options.

At TRF I start out with a healthy breakfast of oatmeal....Sam Smiths Oatmeal Stout that is, truely a great way to begin your day, and start meeting with friends at teh PoW pub before the parade. After that hearty start, I tend to lighten up, have a mead or somethign and as the sun gets higher and hotted a Blue Moon (or several) is rather refreshing. By the time we hit the Sea Devil though, its time for the real deal - Stone's Arrogant Bastard Ale. I love that beer, the bottle says it's not for everyone, but that just leaves more for me.

Homebrewing: the best social networking ploy EVER.

Just mentioning it, in any setting, and suddenly I'm mr. popular. If I'd only known about this back in high school, I could have avoided some of those awkward years....oh wait, right....not that I drank in high school..........*giggle*

But yes, I'm a wee worried about the mead...and there is a bunch of it (since it turns out it came out too dry for the wife's liking, more for the rest of us). Bottling it is a bit more bothersome. I was trying to use the ceramic bottles with the clamping tops, but I failed to drink 5 gallons worth. Some might end up in plain old beer bottles.

Brown Ale is bottled, brewing wheat and stout this weekend, should be ready for opening of TRF or or our second visit 2 weeks later.

At Scarby I'll try and taste some of Var's and Sir Lawrence's homebrew (yummmm), and then switch to Widmer Hefeweizen.  (I'm a beer snob and not a fan of A-B beers, but they do have Guinness.  Unfortunately, Widmer has also gone to the "dark side" with A-B as part owners.)

For TRF, it's getting the Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale on tap at the Sea Devil.  PoW and the King's Feast usually serve some really good brews (Young's Double Chocolate Stout), but I have a tradition of always having at least one Monty Python's Holy Grail Ale per weekend.  Especially since it's tempered over burning witches... ;D

If I'm really lucky, TRF may have New Belgium's 1554 on tap somewhere.  Alas, their distributor doesn't follow through, and the really good beers are wiped out before the season is over.

The best places to find the really good beers at TRF are the PoW, Sea Devil, and that "new" place sorta behind Lady McArthur's.  If they could only bring in the really good stuff from Avery and Dogfish Brewing Companies...

After having a sip out of a certain Pirate Captain's mug after Closing Gate at Scarborough this past weekend, he informed me that, since we no longer carry Guinness (Shock, Horror, Fear) we now have a Scarborough Dark!

Has anyone here tried it yet?!?

I foiund the Belhaven Stout (which I quite liked), but at which pub does one find this Scarborough Dark?  As a fan of porters and stouts, I must try it on my next visit.  (Oh - Pirate Captain!  Would it be at the Cat and Fiddle then?)

I like Boddingtons now and again. Newcastle, there's a nice beer. Guiness is good for an occasional change. Chimay, yellow preferably. And I even have what is probably the last 4 bottles of Youngs Oatmeal Stout in all of Houston, in my cupboard right now.

But nothing will ever take the place of my favorite; Bass. Now that's a fine beer.

I believe that all of these are available at the Sea Devil Tavern at TRF. What else could you want?

I don't see much beer in the parking lot anymore besides Guinness or Bud light.
Are there fewer microbreweries around?
