I was wondering what kind of "things" (for lack of a better word) can a pirate wear that gives hints as to his/her rank or the job they do aboard their ship? For example . . . I know a couple of ships surgeons who wear cast metal scissors on their belts. What would other members of the crew wear?

the ship's carpenter had a red knit cap that he would always wear. It wasn't just a plain red knit cap though, it was "fuzzy" I guess is the best way to describe it.
My character's a navigator, so I just bought a compass to wear... *shrug*

How about a whistle for your Bosun. A few old maps for your Pilot/ Navagatior. Keys for your Quartermaster/ First Mate (for the treasure chest or armory). Rope for your Sailmaster.
