Title: Mead prices
Post by: groomporter on August 18, 2008, 08:24:49 AM
Yup prices are up, and the cups were smaller, but please don't blame Jim. MAF sets the retail price and supplies him with the cups.   :-[

Yeah, we heard that it wasn't Jim. Too bad they are pushing this. When it costs $12 bucks to sorta fill a mug its not going to help business.

I did hear Jim encouraging one of the new workers on Sunday to be sure to give customers a "full measure" by filling the cups right to the brim.

Seriously, EVERY customer I saw buying mead yesterday was complaining.  I feel bad for the mead wenches having to take the brunt of the complaints.  they should put up a sign saying "If you have any complaints, please contact Jim Peterson personally at..." with his cell phone number on it.   >:(

I tipped the servers for that reason. Its not their fault.

Yup.. Beer prices are up this year too... Not by much, (25 cents on domestic and 25 cents on import) but it did certainly effect the tips... Not that I work there for the money, but a little extra here and there is nice..  :)

Cups stayed the same size though...  ;D

Lot of it has to do with CKC too, they are behind most of it. The wine sells have been complaining that mead is selling more, bigger glasses, and cheaper. So of course they are forcing Jim to do it, and talking to him last year he hates doing it. Maybe Dorky can get it all straight sense she worked for CKC last year and now is working for Jim.

The good news is thou, they do have rubar mead at the one just past the Vil stage on your way down to the Hobbit hole on the left....

so basically, they are trying to even out the sales of the wine/beer  and the mead?  Its all alcohol, i guess i don't really understand what the difference is. I mean, mead is a big seller out there. Ya, I want to go out to fest to buy beer or wine, which I can get every day out side of fest. Mead? It's only at fest if you like that kind of mead. So, let's up the prices and make the galsses smaller-so that will make the sales of beer/wine more. Yea, i don't get it. Sorry, wasn't trying to be snarky, but really they have what? 2? 3? meads booths this year? I personally think greed. But that's just me. Just my 2 cents about it.

Word was a year, or so ago when Jim the mead guy was cut back to one booth it was because the big wine supplier was complaining about the competition from the mead.

It may not be their fault but it will have a HUGE impact in the amount of mead I buy.  I could not believe what I paid for a "shot glass" of mead.  It was good, very good, but not that good.  I love MNRF but high prices will temper my spending, just the basic laws of economics.

That, and my grey bearded face being carded everywhere.  Maybe they feel it's needed, and maybe it is, but it does annoy me.  If something annoys the customer eventually they tire of the annoyance and go elsewhere.

Well, the carding isn't just for age anymore. Bars are now supposed to be checking the backs of licenses for people with restrictions due to things like DUI's

Having worked SS, I know that every employee has been told very strictly to card everyone, no exceptions.

However I know what you mean.  If I am not working & can have a drink, I make an attempt to go buy from a booth where I am known.

I just went through TIPS training last month.  That is untrue...it is not our responsibility, they can drink- they just lose driving privledges after one drink.  If we refuse to serve them, we are open to lawsuits.  We check the backs of ID's as that is a good way to spot fakes.  There are ones for sale online that state on the back that it is not a real ID.

I suppose I should put my two cents in... hmmm...

Cup Size - They'd been trying to do that for about three years, but I made such a stink about it every time they tried that I think they just gave up.  We expected that they'd do it this year.  Unfortunately, the dunderheads in the supply area gave the main booth 7 oz cups on Saturday morning and the extremely green workers didn't catch the mistake until I poured a cup around 6:30.  Needless to say, we let it be known that this was NOT okay and they managed to fix it on Sunday.   I am trying to find a way to make it up to those of you that got the 7 oz glasses.

Price - I think Jim may have expected them to raise the price as well (after all, they've raised it every year since I started), but I was absolutely appalled that they raised the price AND dropped the cup size.  This is the first year in something like ten years that Jim raised the price per gallon for EKC.  So, perhaps it is our fault this year, but the ECK markup is astronomical.

Whiney Wine Reps - Yes, we were pulled from the regular wine booths because the wine distributors were upset that we were affecting their sales.  I have no idea how Peterson thinks that having three mead booths won't have the same effect.

More Mead Booths -
Here's my side of the story:  Last year Evil KC was short on wine staff, so they frequently pulled the second worker from my booth to work at other booths.  You all know how busy the mead booth gets (so do they), so why they pulled MY worker instead of the other workers from not-so-busy booths I just don't know.  Anyway, one particularly busy day, Peterson was on grounds and saw the ginormous line (which I believe went past the guard camp) and freaked out that it would negatively affect the mead sales.  So, being their usual brilliant selves, EKC and Peterson decided that opening another mead booth to help alleviate the lines would be the best use of their resources.  Yeah... I don't know why it didn't occur to any of them to put TWO people back in the mead booth.

Here's the Mead side of the story:  Jim is pretty excited to have more mead booths because it means he can bring down more of the flavors.  He likes to experiment with new meads and there just isn't room for anything else at the main booth.  He's hoping that the other booths DO help alleviate the lines and that perhaps more people will try mead that wouldn't have tried to go to the main booth before.  As far as I've been able to gather from all of our discussions about the booth and the mead, he's not out at fest to make a huge profit.  He seems happy to cover overhead expenses and make enough to make it worth driving all the way from Stanchfield and back two to three times a week for the duration.

Mead Staff:  EKC seems to have corrected their staffing snafu and put a competent, if not quiet and a little shy, young man in charge of the booth.

Huh... I think I covered most of the debacle of this past weekend.  I apologize for not warning anyone about the price hike!  I found out Friday night...

Having some still stashed away in my wine celler (the room in the basement where the well used to be) I'm content to wait until the season ends and buy in bulk in Cambridge.  If it wasn't for the bulk sales, it'd be a different story, as The Mead is one of the few reasons I would miss MNRF.

I know you guys aren't complaining about us.  Perhaps a petition with some huge number of signatures asking for the prices to stay put for the next few years would catch their attention.  Probably not but a girl can hope, right? Unfortunately it would probably take a severe downturn in the mead sales to make Peterson take notice.  In the meantime, call and write letters expressing your displeasure.  Perhaps there is a way to covertly tell people where to send complaints... hmm... must do some brainstorming.

I love discussions about cup size.   ;D

Six bucks did not bother me near as much as the tiny glass.  Prices go up, it's the way of things.  Somehow all is right in the world now that I hear the cup size has gone back to the old size.  I shall pop open my last bottle of "The Mead" in celebration!

As far as making up for the 7 oz cups...seems to me you already did, you fixed it and I am happy enough with that.

Well....one of the R/Fers and fellow Arizonians that is coming with The Marquis and I this Labour Day to MNRF....just loves ...loves....I say she adores very, very sweet wine.
She will love the Mead Booth.....and she won't mind the price...because you get what you pay for. :)

I've personally recommended a split of mint and raspberry and of course the Egyptian...mmmm.

Just like when any other customer "calls" for a specific whisky (or vodka or gin or rum) they don't ask the price...they just want the specific.

Wait, you mean we should have had larger glasses than those tiny things?  So, are you saying the tiny glasses were a mistake then?
Title: Re: Mead prices
Post by: dorkyfaerie on August 18, 2008, 10:39:13 PM
Yes!  The tiny glasses were a big mistake.  It has been fixed and we are actually going to each booth to check the cups periodically throughout the day.

I knew it looked like it was a bitter smaller portion than last year. It barely passed half way in my mug and I know it used to fill at least 2/3 of the way. If it wasn't for the price I was going to get another one, just to even it out. But funds were limited.

Bottom line is that the mead is wonderful and we love to drink it.  Just like someone said, if it is what you want you will pay the price - sting though it may.  I was wondering why the cups were filled right to the rim but now I have my answer!  I wonder if decining bee populations have raised the price of honey hence affecting mead prices in some way also?

HI All, what is the price of mead these days? I don't honestly recall, and won't be out at fest til the 29th. Oh, and if someone can tell me where to buy mead (we're staying in burnsville, if that helps), it would be greatly appreciated. We only get a spiced mead up here in Canada, and I want to bring some home! (Or at least drink it all in the hotel ;) )

Chaucer's Mead is the most common commercial stuff available in local liquor stores.

Or here's the link to the maker of the mead at MNRF http://www.the-mead-booth.com/

Winehaven winery, north of the twin cities but not as far as Cambridge, sells some excellent wine.  Don't have the URL handy but google winehaven minnesota and it will pop right up.

It's a great alternative when you can't get to MNRF, runs about $10 per normal size wine bottle.

And if any of our friends from MN happen to be down our way, stop in for a glass of mead!!

I had always heard of Guinness and Cider as a Black & Gold, (aka, Black Apple) which is Half Guinness Stout and half hard cider.

...and a Black Velvet (aka, Black and Red) is made from stout beer (often Guinness) and white, sparkling wine, traditionally champagne, and a Red Velvet is Half Guinness, Half Raspberry Cider Jack...

...I've never heard of a Black Velveteen, that's new to me.

I know that there are about 50 different "Beer Cocktails" that can be created using various beers and wines...

My son brought one of those small personal kegs of Heineken to Bristol on the Sunday he came with us.  It was in the trunk of the car.  When he went out in the parking lot to get a drink, while he was refilling his mug, Security came and took the keg away from him, out of the trunk.  On his way out of the faire, he had to return to Security to retrieve it.  So no more booze at Bristol, not even in the trunk. But if you come to NW Illinois, the door is open.   ;D

I've never heard of this, neither has my "Personal Bartender" (my son) so, if you can think of a name, you can name it as far as I'm concerned...

I was thinking a "Drunken Pharaoh", but that is just a suggestion...

Similar to the song "Drunken Sailor".

"What would you do with a Drunken Pharaoh..."

How about an "Irish Mummy"?

Wouldn't an Irish 'Mummy' have a wee bit of milk/Irish cream as well?

Since the main ingredient in the Eqyptian mead is Hibiscus, how about a "High Irish"?

Or after you've had a few, it will slur into a Hirish.

Lady Renee, I'm from MN, and I'll be at Bristol the rest of the season, hint hint

Too bad we can't bring our own onto site, however I do have a hotel room off exit 344

Dayna, companion of Nixie, aka The Mighty War Rat of Bristol

===========================================================================

===========================================================================
So sorry to hear about the confiscation, note the "too bad we can't bring our own onto site" in my prior posting.  He probably would have been just fine if he'd left it there and not been drinking out of it, then security wouldn't have even known it was there.

I am done.  I will not be back out this year and may not come back at all.   I am not willing to come home from fest and cry myself to sleep anymore over the way MAF is treating Jim and the mead family.  MAF went too far.  I have much more to say, but I don't want to get thrown into John's Inn.

Please be good to Jim and the people who work in the mead booths.  Please go up to the meadery and buy bulk mead and let them know you would support them outside of fest.

Thanks for being so good to me for so many years!!  I'll see you at a pub night or another festival!

Take care hun!  I'm sure we'll see you around outside of fest here and there.  I heard what happened from Margaret.  I will definately continue to purchase Mead from Jim and always love doing it the way that makes him the most money.

Hi Dorkyfaerie,
I am sad that my partner and I only had a glass of mead. We wanted more, but he was getting heatstroke so we thought it best to have more ice/water instead. It is gloriously good though, and one of the main reasons (besides garb-watching!) why we attend fest, so the $6 price wasn't an issue. I do know that several people left the Mead Booth around 10am on sunday because there was a problem with the taps and they were being grumpy, but as it was fixed in under 20 min I felt they were being a bit unfair. Mechanical problems happen, and they said something at the other mead booth had broke too so you guys were running around all day trying to make sure we could get mead.   We would love to visit the meadery and will have to try to see if we can find it next year....its unfortunately a fair ways out of the way back to Canada (and they aren't open during fest, correct?) and sadly Im pretty sure I can't afford the taxes&duty on a keg of mead (though I'd love to have one...)

Sorry to hear dorkyfaerie.
I hope the time comes where you can go out there and have fun again.
You shouldn't have to go home upset from working, especially at fest.

You always hate to here things like this.  How does management expect to run a business when they they chase off the vendors.  As far as anyone is concerned, the Mead is Jim's to do with as he pleases, whether it's for profit or not.

Dorkyfaerie, I hope you change your mind about swearing off fest for good.  I'll have some loki waiting for you when you come back.

Remember dorkyfaerie, there's always a home for you here. We'll hope that your angst against moronic management will one day pass. Just give it time, and you'll feel comfortable by doing your thing, and they'll do theirs. But never the two shall meet.

As someone who just got back after closing Bristol, would someone mind posting what actually happened?  I know from reading that the price went up and the cup size went down, but IIRC the cup size was a mistake which was rectified.  What's MAF done now?  >:(
