Title: Happily Unemployed?
Post by: Lady Mikayla of Phoenicia on August 26, 2008, 03:29:31 PM
I've been out of regular, full-time work for nearly a year now and as many around me with jobs get new and better jobs or at least job offers...I decided to drown my sorrows in happiness.

So for those of us on state or federal contracts, i.e. unemployment... what makes you happy about being unemployed?

I'll start with getting to spend more time with my boys, friends and pyrates.   ;D

Well i'm not unemploed right now, but my contract ends Oct 15th at the place I currently work and it does not look like I will get renewed as tey have budget cuts and will be laying people off.

So what makes me happy... Only thing I can think of, Sleeping In and not having to drive to work and getting to excersize more. Other wise i'm miserable because I have child support to keep up on and to many bills to pay. Lets face it Unemployment sucks.

I have been happily unemployed all summer, due to surgery.  It gave me time to work on my "minimize and organize" project throughout the house.  Got rid of lots!  Also had the opportunity to catch up on some movies I had missed, spend time with my sweetheart, and - believe it or not - I actually got to read two books!  (Mind you, I have not had time to read much of anything other than text books for the last two years!)

Another week or two and I'll have to go back to my job, but I've definitely enjoyed the time off.

I have been "unemployed" for nigh on 19 years now...and I truly love it.. I get to make my own hours, I indulge in what I want, when I want. I am truly blessed to be able to be home with my children...Huzzah! LF

Once upon a time I worked construction.... for about  5 years in fact. Most often I would work shutdown jobs that would last anywhere from a couple of weeks to 6 months. For all that time I would work anything from 12 hour shifts 7 days a week on up to 1 hour shifts. I always looked forward to the end of the job so that I could spend time relaxing at home with my boy. Depending on the job I worked, I could coast on savings and unemployment for a up to a few months before having to get back out working.
The benefit was of course getting to see my boy doing stuff that most dad's had to miss. The drawback was having to deal with my (now ex)wife on my case to get back out and find a new job. Never mind that she never had a job for the first 8 years we were married. (ok, stopping the venting there lol)

Now as a teacher, I have the option of summers off but have only taken that a few times. Two of those summers I "worked" at boy scout camp with my son and loved it. Nowadays, I cant sit around and do nothing for that long. I would rather work summer school than sit and watch the paint dry at home. The Lovely Lady Trinn has informed me that retirement is not an option because I would drive her insane because I get bored way to easily lol

*only so many times you can rearrange your rum collection...*

I like to work.  One time I broke my leg pretty badly and was out of the office for three weeks.  I thought I would go mad with the boredom and daytime television.  My boss even brought me work from the office to keep me sane (of course, no one else there was able to do it).  Finally I was able to return in a wheelchair.  Nope, much more than a week of not working and I start to get ansy.  Two weeks and I am bonkers.
