Old school ones that is...
I'm interested in trying to make my own sourdough bread... And So i read a few websites about making sourdough bread... and went to the grocery store today and bought a small loaf pan and flour (we had everything else) but when i was checking the recipe's I found it said that bleached flour isn't recommended for the starter.. and that's what I bought... Will it just not work at all with bleached flour?
Disclaimer: I've had chronic bad luck with sourdough bread even before moving to Colorado where baking anything tends to turn into a science lesson.
There's no harm in trying, but the things that make bleached flour bleached could have a negative effect on the cultures you're trying to grow for the starter. (That's also why most recipes say to avoid tap water, since the chemicals use to purify many tap water systems will also have the cultures.)
Good point Blushing! I think I will have to get some water from my friend out in the country who is on well water the next time I make cheese as well. I currently follow the directions for mozzerella and use distilled water. I bet it would turn out even better with non-chemically treated water.
double check if you use bottled water.. a lot of that is just bottled from a tap (specifically CA Walmart brand is tap water from Nevada) I just did a whole report on it
Even feeding my culture every 8 hours it's still not doubling.. it's just rising a teeny tiny bit..
