OK folks... there has been much discussion but no decision on which weekend to have the renvasion of Scarby. I thought it would be good to open a thread to (politely) debate which weekend will be our main renvasion.

My own thoughts lean towards either opening or closing weekend.
Opening is a favorite because it is generally nice and cool and everyone likes to go then anyways.
Closing weekend because its a three day weekend.

Those also happen to be the weekends I am fairly certain the Lovely Lady Trinn and I will be out there. Any others will be pretty tricky for us.

Once we have talked about it for a bit, I'll start a poll on this thread... didn't want to start out with that until people have had a chance to have their respective says on the matter.

I'm in. I'm actually thinking of opening a booth anyway....

any day is a good day.  i myself am more partial to opening weekend.  i march with the Queens own Highlanders and closing weekend we are usually very busy with the memorial day stuff and so on.

As wonderful as cooler weather sounds, it just makes more sense to go on a 3 day weekend for someone like me who has to make a 4 1/2 hour drive. I won't have any vacation days to use, either, so I would arrive at bed time Friday and be exhausted driving home Sunday!  :(  We should "convince" the faire owners to give us onsite camping. With showers and flushies.

I like the three day weekend as well, but after watching the ambulance parade closing weekend last year, I lean more toward earlier in the season. Since there is no camping I'm not burning a bunch of vacation for Scarby either

I like openning myself for the reason of it being when everyone is really stoked and past ready to be at faire.  BUT... Idk what weekend we do it cause I Ally and I will plan to be there openning and closing if possible, and we will be there renvasion weekend for sure. 

we are getting season passes this year, since we live about 5 minutes from Scarby... i normally work sundays but i'm gonna try to switch with a co-worker for the season (keeping my fingers crossed)

hey MacLaren... what kind of booth?... i checked it out and they are costly $900 minimum i think... more if you rent someones booth, plus you have to have your wares juried

heheh Um I'm not in the group but I'm shooting for Opening weekend.  Vampy will need a fair break by then and well I haven't been to Scarby since my Husband left me in 2004 lol.  Its time to go back.  *giggles*

I will definitely do my best to make it, no matter what the weekend... but it will probably only be for one day, since there's no camping, and I live a few hours away. Although, that gives me a few months to figure out where the after party will be, eh?

I agree with opening weekend.  I have no idea how often I'll be able to make it this year, but I know I'll do opening and closing.

I agree with Zaubon about closing weekend - it bordered on miserable last year.  We even left early both Saturday and Sunday and had to force ourselves to get through the worst of Monday afternoon.  Earlier in the season would be preferable.

Like Macintyre, Lawrence is in the Queen's Own Highlanders, and I'm in the Royal Guard, so we're pretty busy with the Memorial Day events as well.

When is Scarby?  I wanna go  :o  I might need to start scheduling and planning now.  Just tell me when and where so I can cross my fingers, wish and pray that I can make it  ;D

I vote for opening weekend also. Don't know how much more I could go since my room mate moved out and money is going to be tight for me unless I get a new roomie.

I'll be there - doesn't matter what weekend. I live in the Metroplex, and Scarby is only about an hour away. I get a season pass and my daughter and I come out quite a bit.

It looks like the general consensus is leaning mostly towards opening weekend for the main renvasion. Cooler weather seems to be prevailing over longer weekend lol
Come on folks... get to posting so we can get to planning. Some of us have to put in our weekends off this month to plan for next year.

I'll go ahead and commit to opening weekend! Less waiting!!!

I will start planning and saving on my end.  Hopefully I will beable to make it this year.  So I guess I just have to wait and see what will happen.  Crossing my fingers extra tight now.

I am considering going opening weekend.  I prefer cold over warm and that seems like my best chance of cooler weather.  I'll likely make it for the Saturday, Sunday would be iffy.

I too would prefer opening weekend, because it is cooler.

Saw a post that had a typo for the dates for Scarby this year. Scarby is from April 4th to May 25, not April 24. Scarby is open on Saturdays and Sundays and Memorial Day Monday and is open from 10-7.

NOOOOO!!!  That is opening weekend of our faire here, and I'm working the whole weekend!!!

good gods man, lay off the rum, you scared me! I thought, after reading your response, there was only a month of faire this year!  Scarby starts on the 4th (not 24th) of April, and continues through the 25th of may.

Bacardi and I are shooting for closing weekend...  The 3 day weekend works out better for us...  :-*

Crap. No opening weekend for me...My first weekend can't be until April 25th.

You forgot a weekend, Teach. And a very special weekend too (even though I think Opening Weekend is the best for a McLotofUs invasion)

May 16th and May 17th.

I'll be lucky enough to celebrate my birthday on the day of at faire this coming season.

I'd love to see whoever does come out to faire, whether it be opening or closing or whenever.  ;D

I voted for closing weekend, but I need to check when the Drunken Gnomes will be doing our invasion.

Since this will be my first year for Scarby, I plan on staying at the motel that the Gnomes reserve a block of rooms. That way I can scout out the drive over to the campgrounds at the lake before I bring the travel trailer up for future runs.

It would be nice to know the themes...

Don't remember Scarby doing "themes" like TRF does but I haven't been since 2003.

Oh well... not sure when, but not the first weekend, I guess.

They really only have like a few official themed weekends, like Pirate Invasion and...I think that might be it actually. Not the same as TRF.

Usually the themed weekends run something like this:

Family - up to 3 kids free with every adult paid admission
ASL - interpreters for the hearing impaired at most performances
Highland Games Weekend - official highland games competition and Scots weekend
Wine and Ale Festival - yeah, self explanatory
Romance - vow renewals and so on
Pirates - again, self-explanatory
Memorial Day weekend - veterans are honored in many ways (vets from ANY service and ANY country)

They vary from year to year, but that's the usual pattern.  2009 special events aren't up yet, though.

We'll be there Closing Weekend (no kids).  One other, with kids, AFTER Easter (for some reason the Church frowns on pastors missing Palm Sunday and Easter).  Thus, my vote of invasion would be -- anything AFTER Easter...

I just made my reservations at the Super 8 motel.

Everyone probably won't recognize me, as the long hair and beard are gone (won't start growing back until May for TRF).

I've purchased a FoF pass, just because I can and it has some nice perks.

I have no idea how long it will take me to drive up from Pearland Friday morning, since I haven't travelled that path, but expect it's about 5 hours from here.

Hope to see all my Faire friends there opening weekend.
