Finally found a way to get my 14 year old son to shovel the driveway:  I wouldn't take him over to the house of a friend who happens to be a girl unless he shoveled...yeah!

I would love the snow if my dear spouse didn't have to work today (he drove to Crosby and back.....last I heard he was in Clearwater, but that was at 1:40....I'll be happy when he's home).

Otherwise, I love the snow!  If it is going to be cold, it might as well be pretty!

Now:

Yes, the haze is SNOW.  And that's not a field beyond the trees and brush, it's a little frozen lake.

I just got back from a run to the liquor store. It's good to live on a snow emergency route at least when you have off-street parking. Most of the people on our block park on the street so they'll have to do the "dance of the snow plows" since Minneapolis has just announced a snow emergency.

Ok, I can really enjoy the snow now, Kurt walked in the door 15 minutes ago (yeah overtime!-and only 5 hours later than usual) and the house smells like cookies.

I was going to fire up the snow blower before it got dark, but it started snowing heavier, so I decided just to wait until morning.

I love the snow. There just has to be snow in Minnesota over the holidays or there something wrong with the world in my opinion.

I like sitting inside (with an adult beverage) and watching the snow fall outside. Kinda peaceful and tranquil for me.

As for the snow blowing. I was gone one weekend last year when we had a big storm and had to explain to Gin over the phone how to use our snow blower. She figured it out and said she really liked doing it. So this afternoon she decided that she wanted to blow our driveway out.

More power to you honey!!!....

I disagree to all positive points to snow

1) I hate wet pant cuffs
2) I hate snow in my shoes
3) I cannot tolerate the cold
4) I drive a Kia
5) I don't do snow sports (see #3)
6) I drive A KIIIIIAAAAA (it needed repeating)
7) I work in a biz casual environment.  Dress shoes + Snow = unhappy Nessa

Snow I like...

The bitter cold I can do without!!!...

Snow blowing when it's -9 with a -30 windchill is no fun. My lovely wife would have no part of that this morning! She said it was my turn since she did it yesterday...LoL

Somehow I have the feeling that it will always be my turn when it's this cold out.

Our 7 year old battery in our Intrepid picked this morning to crap out too. Had to take that and get a new battery put in this morning. Replacing a battery in an Intrepid is no easy thing to do either since it's under the wheel well and you got to take crap off to get the old one out and the new one in. I had them install it. I wasn't going to mess with that.

I agree, Storm , it's not the snow that's hard to take, it's the subzero!

Snow is beautiful!  The trees in our backyard looked so pretty (before the wind blew all the snow off).

Snow means skiing!!!  We love skiing!!!

Snow means wood burning stoves and fireplaces.  Love the smell!

Snow means staying home with my hubby, baking cookies, watching movies curled up on the couch.

Ah...  I really do like snow.

the snow i don't mind...it's definitely the subzero that I hate. Snow is pretty and nice it's the ice i can do without as well.

Totally agree with you on the ice. We were out and about today, going to the grocery store, finishing up shopping, etc and we saw so many accidents, the highways looked fine, but were quite slick.  There was an 8 car pile up on westbound 394 just west of the 100/394 interchange.

Yes...Snow is great...

I can remember when I was in grade school (uhm.....back in the 70's) how much I enjoyed waking up in the morning and seeing a blanket of snow covering everything. It was always a surprise back then since weather forecasting wasn't the greatest in those days and you could go to bed at night and wake up to a foot of snow the next morning with pretty much no warning from the weathermen (then again....not much has changed since then has it! The weathermen still have a hard time getting things right!...LoL). I remember listening to the radio intently waiting to hear that school was canceled. When that word came, all us kids on the block would head outside to play all day. We'd build snow men and snow forts, have snow ball fights, go sledding down the hill a block away, or head to the ice rink in the park just down the block for a little skating. We had a grand time in the snow.

Ah yes....the good old days...

Winter in Minnesota can be a wonderful thing....if you let it......

Sounds like you guys got what we received last weekend - like 30-40 cm of snow and then Antarctic temperatures.  All the schools in town shut down last Monday - was a nice little teacher holiday for me and my friends!  This past weekend the southern part of Ontario (Toronto) was pummeled with the snow (read: people that get little snow and have no idea how to drive in it = tragedy).  Snow I don't mind, its the shoveling and cold that I hate - oh yeah and paying to get my driveway plowed too!
Happy holidays everyone - may they be blessed however you celebrate them!

I will say, this is definitely the most snow I have seen since I moved to Minnesota 4 years ago.
And living in a small town makes a world of difference.  Here when they first plow, all the snow on the "major roads" goes into the middle of the street and becomes a divider.  Then they bring in dump trucks, load up all the snow and haul it out of town.  That was an interesting sight the first time I saw it a few weeks ago.
This weekend was fun since we are so close to Iowa, and they were having blizzard conditions.  I got to cancel church for last Sunday since we were going to have 20-30 mph winds, subzero temps, and a new 6-10 inches of snow from Saturday night into Sunday.
And now we have 3-5 inches coming tomorrow, and the 4-6 on Wednesday, snow showers on Thursday, and more on Friday.  The pile behind my house is already as tall as I am, and I waded through waist deep snow trying to get to church Saturday night to change the message on the answering machine.
Its a lot of snow.
Makes me wish I had something like a snow mobile, but I will just reside in my freezing office writing sermons that I never get to preach instead...

Hey as long as my kids parents get here by 5 it's all good.  I let them all slide on late fees last Tuesday because it was the first time any one had been late fince last Febuary.  One dad left his work at 3 and made it here a little before 6.

Steve and I went to visit his folks in Fargo this weekend and we expected terrible horrible roads.  We planned for an extra long drive home Sunday.  Tured out we had dry roads all the way there and all the way home.

Yup just plain idiots out there. Some lady almost hit and totaled my car. Thank goodness to my keen loke fast ninja like reflexes and a snow bank to save me. She drove out of an apartment complex driveway without stopping. I hit my brakes, swerved and skidded to the oposite side of the road where the snow bank stopped me from hitting the steep ditch. She just stayed there in the middle of the road until i got out of the snow bank and then drove off faster than i could get her plate. No damge to my car that i can see.

Don't know who the original author is for this, so don't know who to credit. I am sure many of you have seen this. It has a tendency to show up in e-mails this time of year...

Aug 12: Moved to our new home in Minnesota. It is so beautiful here. The landscape is so majestic. Can hardly wait to see it with snow. I love it here.

Oct 14: Minnesota is the most beautiful place on earth. The leaves are turned all the colors and shades of red and orange. Went for a ride through the beautiful country and saw some deer. They are so graceful, certainly they are the most wonderful animal on earth. This must be paradise. I love it here.

Nov 11: Deer season will start soon. I can't imagine anyone wanting to kill such a gorgeous creature. Hope it will snow soon. I love it here.

Dec 2: It snowed last night. Woke up to find everything blanketed with white. It looked like a postcard. We went outside and cleaned the snow off the steps and shoveled the driveway. We had a snowball fight (I won), and when the snow plow came by, we had to shovel again. What a beautiful place. I love Minnesota.

Dec 12: More snow last night. I love it. The snow plow did his trick again to the driveway. I love it here!

Dec 19: More snow last night. Couldn't get out of the driveway to get to work. I am exhausted from shoveling. Damn snow plow.

Dec 22: More of that white chit fell last night. I've got blisters on my hands from shoveling. I think the snow plow hides around the curve and waits until I'm done shoveling the driveway. weed kicker!

Dec 25: Merry @*!!@#@! Christmas! More friggin snow. If I ever get my hands on that son-of-a-belch who drives that snow plow, I swear I'll kill the bastard. Don't know why they don't use more salt on the roads to melt the ice.

Dec 27: More white chit last night. Been inside for 3 days except for shoveling out the driveway after that snow plow goes through every time. Can't go anywhere, car's stuck in a mountain of white chit. The weatherman says to expect another 10" of the stuff again tonight. Do you know how many shovels full of snow 10" is?

Dec 28: The friggin weatherman was wrong. We got 43" of that white chit this time. At this rate it won't melt before next summer. The snow plow got stuck up the road and that bastard came to the door and asked to borrow my shovel. After I told him I had broken six shovels already shoveling all the chit he pushed into the driveway, I broke the last one over his head.

Jan 4: Finally out of the house today. Went to the store to get food and on the way back a damned deer ran in front of the car and I hit it. Did about $3,000 damage to the car. Those friggin beasts should be killed. Wish the hunters had killed ALL of them last November.

May 3: Took the car to the garage in town. Would you believe the thing is rusting out from that lousy salt they put all over the road.

May 10: Moved to Arizona. I can't imagine why anyone in their right mind would want to live in that God-forsaken state of Minnesota.

I disagree to all positive points to snow

1) I hate wet pant cuffs get tall boots
2) I hate snow in my shoes  Again...boots
3) I cannot tolerate the cold  Just need a couple more subzero days for your blood to thicken in order to tolerate cold  ;)
4) I drive a Kia The Kia should be your "summer" car...need 4WD
5) I don't do snow sports (see #3) What's wrong with you?!? You live in Minneesoooota...
6) I drive A KIIIIIAAAAA (it needed repeating)  Again I can't stress the 4WD thing
7) I work in a biz casual environment.  Dress shoes + Snow = unhappy Nessa  Wear the tall boots you bought for #1...bring dress shoes in bag.

Snow is wonderful!!  It is pretty and fluffy and makes my dog squirrely - it is a joy to watch her romp in it.  It can make for stressful driving and cursing of idiots who forgot their winter driving skills but...all par for the course when you live such a place as here.  I love Minnesota and all of it's season changes.  Winter (obviously) happens to be my fave (and not just cuz all all my seasonal allergens are obliterated).  I am not fond of subzero days but don't mind them so much if there is actually snow on the ground.  However, I keep reminding myself we need the subzero days to freeze the lakes so we can zoom across them on sleds.  :)  Now, just a few more inches and the trails will be perfect!

I'm actually kind of excited.  Tomorrow is my last day of watching other peoples' kids for the year.  I hope it stays above like 5 at least so I can take the kids sledding a few times over the break.  Their idea of outside time in winter is helping to shovel the drive or stomping around the back yard.  It would be fun to see what they think of getting go fast down a long hill.  Little twerps put on their stuff and came outside to demonstrate their version of help this AM at 6:30 am with me.

Reading this makes me sooooo glad we're in Arizona now. We did get a little snow. But it's already melted away. If I want to see it, I can look at it on top of the mountains that are around us. No more dealing with it, than I have too. Thank you dad-in-law. Glad to hear your okay though Sleepy, and no damage to your vehicle. Some people should have a summer only drivers license. And even then, only on odd or even days, so you'll know what days to avoid the idiots.

Toarmod and Synnovea are good people, smart people, I trust them.  Perhaps I was a bit harsh in my response to their love of snow and snowmobiles.  I looked out the window last night and watched the soft flakes dance on the white blanket covering the ground with the carress of a lovers touch.  I thought "maybe this snowmobile thing is ok after all".  So I got the Solstice out of storage, rolled down the windows, dropped the rag-top and shut off the heat.  Bundled up like a spaceman I tore down the streets at full throttle sliding and spinning on the ice.  I turned onto the 94 ramp and hit the freeway, got up to 85 in no time...yep, I was right, winter pretty much sucks...

Ya know I saw a solution for that last winter.  Someone was selling mittens they had fixed on line last year on that ETSY sight.  They baught socks and they baught mittens.  Then chopped the feet of the socks and sewed the long anckle part of the sock to the mitten cuff.  And wala,  mittens that supposedly don't get snow up the cuff.
